Here's our first official glimpse at the face of the next-generation Honda Civic. This sketch is intended to give the world an idea of what we can expect from the Civic show car Honda will display at the Detroit Auto Show in January. From the looks of things, the compact coupe will take the look of the current Civic and throw in some additional attitude. Along with some aggressively swept headlamps reminiscent of the European Civic Type R, the sketch also shows off a fascia with more menacing proportions. A large air inlet down low and slit fog lights help pull the car from the throws of anonymity.

Of course, it's always difficult to tell what will survive the transition between design sketch and reality. We don't expect to see those huge wheels nor the wildly flared hips make their way to production. Speaking of production, Honda has a long history of rolling out concepts that are nearly identical to the real deal, so keep your eyes on Detroit for what could be the first look at the next Civic.

New Honda Civic Concept to be Unwrapped at Detroit Show, Previews Production Model

What you see pictured above is an official rendering of the Honda Civic Concept, which will be revealed in the flesh at the upcoming 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in January 2011. According to the Japanese automaker, the concept is more of a pre-production study that will preview the actual, ninth-generation 2012 Civic, which will go on-sale in North America in spring next year.

The illustration depicts a coupe model with possible styling influences from the European market Civic hatchback (front) and the North American Accord Coupe (profile). Honda did not release any specific details on the car, but we suspect that we'll learn more within the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned.

First Look: 2012 Honda Civic Concept

All-new model set for January debut at Detroit Auto Show.

by Paul A. Eisenstein on Dec.13, 2010

Honda has confessed to an open secret: a much-awaited new version of the popular Civic model will make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show, next month, and this official rendering offers a hint of what’s to come.

The image of the ninth-generation Civic, one of two foundational vehicles for Honda, will appear in the line-up for the 2012 model-year, and not a moment too soon. The compact passenger car segment is facing more competition than it has seen in years, with a variety of new offerings from the U.S. and South Korea aiming to topple the established order.

Though they remain the segment’s best-sellers, the current, gen-eight Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla are more vulnerable than they have been in years, industry analysts warn, but the launch of an all-new Civic should help Honda hold onto its segment – at least if it hits the mark. Toyota has taken significant heat for the current Corolla, which suffered from both cost-cutting and differences of opinion between the company’s U.S. and Japanese managers.

Sleekly aerodynamic, the sketch released by Honda appears to show the design of the 2012 Civic Coupe. That’s traditionally been the maker’s sportiest entry in the compact segment. Whether Honda will take a similarly aggressive approach with the 2012 Civic Sedan remains to be seen.

Over the years, as Honda has steadily expanded its line-up, key models like Civic and Accord have had to share showroom space with new alternatives, from the Odyssey minivan to the CR-Z hybrid. Nonetheless, the importance of the Civic can’t be understated. Honda has sold nearly 234,000 Civics – in their various forms – for the first 11 months of 2010. That makes it the 11th best-selling model on the American market, according to AutoData Corp., which tracks vehicle sales statistics.
