IIHS Crashes Lucerne

I'm wondering about that too. On the side note, the LaCrosse and Grand Prix both got Good on all. So improved styling means sacrificing safety?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You call the new Impala imporoved styling? Your post is dated April 2nd so I'll assume it's not as ridiculous as the April Fools Jokes I had to read earlier.

Perhaps it's because GM crashed the SS Impala, which has larger wheels (less tire deformation; more intrusion) and a larger engine. Remember the W-body wasn't originally engineered to accommodate a small-block V8.

No, seriously. It may look bland, but the older one just looks like an amalgam of plastic. The new one is a welcome change, at least to me.

C&G is about voicing opinions, right? :D

Ditto...

... the new interiors alone are HUGE improvements. The power boosts, the cleaner looks inside and out, the added features... MUCH more improved vehicle over its predecessor.

Please delete my last statement from your quote. I checked it and you're right. I forgot that the DTS and Buick only shared the same platform.

I just assumed that the W body and the G body were so similar that they were essentially the same platform.

Yea I misread the article.

The IIHS tested the Impala SS. I guess the extra mass upfront changed the rating from the previous generation V6.

The 2000-2005 received a good in the IIHS test.

Now this begs the question, why test the SS? Knowing that people buy based upon these ratings. Considering, the V6 probably gets a "good". And is the volume vehicle.

Or for God's sake GM should send the IIHS a V6 Impala for testing. Assuming the structure is a "Good" like the other Ws, that way there will be both ratings on the IIHS homepage.

Does the IIHS pick the car to test (a la Consumer Reports) or do they ask GM for a doner car and GM decides what to supply......(a la any other "buff" mag)....?

IIHS traditionally buys cars from the lots, but with this new change in relying on mfgr data, they probably have little say besides choosing what data out there to use.

Yes - Why the Impala SS was chosen is beyond me with the new system. But GM can always donate a base V6.
