The designer behind the forward-looking 2007 Concept CS and the current BMW 7-Series, Karim Habib, is returning to BMW after leaving last year to work at Mercedes-Benz. He replaces the previous head of exterior design at BMW, Anders Warming.

Habib's first tenure at BMW saw him working closely with then-head of design Chris Bangle. Habib definitely has his own sense of design, however, and his return to BMW likely presages a further evolution of the brand's style.

BMW's official release refers to his time at Mercedes-Benz as "two intervening career years." Regardless of the intra-German competition, Habib appears to be excited to return to BMW.

"I’m really delighted about coming back to the BMW brand and being given the opportunity to help shape the future of BMW as part of an outstanding team," said Habib in the release. BMW Group design director Adrian van Hooydonk also put his stamp of approval on Habib's return, saying, "Karim Habib is an excellent designer who has already made a major contribution to the BMW design with the current BMW 7 Series. I look forward to resuming our collaboration."

As for what Habib's first project on his return to BMW may be, the rumored 3-Series Gran Turismo is due for arrival soon, and the front-wheel-drive MINI-based BMW is still on the drawing board as well. The rest of the range is largely fresh or mid-cycle. With concepts for the 6-Series Coupe and new Vision EfficientDynamics-inspired hybrid concept already penned, there's not likely much interpretation left to be done in those areas. We'll just have to wait and see--perhaps the 2011 Geneva Motor Show will yield some new fruit.

Karim Habib returns to BMW to head up exterior design

by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 15th 2010 at 10:19AM

This is Karim Habib. You may not recognize his name or his face, but you surely will know his work. The young designer is credited with designing the exteriors of both the current BMW 7 Series and the 2007 Concept CS that preceded it. And now he's back at BMW.

Habib, 40, spent ten years working for BMW, rising up through the ranks to work alongside the controversial but influential Chris Bangle. But he left BMW last year to work for arch rival Mercedes-Benz, a period which BMW simply calls "an absence of two years." Now that Munich's exterior design chief Anders Warming is leaving to take up the head design role at the Mini division, BMW has lured Habib back to Bavaria to take up the position.

We'll be watching to see Karim's hand in future BMW designs in the near future, but in the meantime, you can read the official announcement after the jump.

Return to BMW Design.

Munich. On 1 March 2011, Karim Habib will take on the post of Head of Exterior Design BMW Automobiles, replacing Anders Warming. The 40-year-old designer already spent the first 10 years of his career working for the BMW Group, during which time he was responsible for the current BMW 7 Series range and the BMW Concept CS. Habib now returns to the Group following an absence of two years.

On completing his studies in California, Karim Habib held various posts in interior and exterior design before being appointed Team Leader, Advanced Design for the BMW Group. Following two intervening career years, he now returns to head the Exterior Design BMW Automobiles department.

"I'm really delighted about coming back to the BMW brand and being given the opportunity to help shape the future of BMW as part of an outstanding team," says Habib.

"Karim Habib is an excellent designer who has already made a major contribution to the BMW design with the current BMW 7 Series. I look forward to resuming our collaboration," comments Adrian van Hooydonk, Director of BMW Group Design.
