SUZUKI FORCED TO CLOSE CHINESE OFFICE AFTER SLOW SALES

Although automakers like General Motors and Audi have recently made it seem easy to break into the emerging Chinese auto market, Suzuki was unable to tap into the market with similar levels of success and has now announced the closure of a local office.

In March of this year Suzuki relocated its office after a 15-year stay in Beijing, to Shanghai in order to strengthen ties with joint venture partner, Changan Auto, according to Gasgoo. But after the partnership was rejected, Suzuki China has decided to close its newly relocated office.

Another cause behind the closure is a lack of sales for the brand as a whole that has managed just over half of its annual projections, moving just 260,000 of the 500,000 projected units. One glaring failure is that of the flagship Kizashi sedan, which was projected to sell as many as 10,000 units annually, but so far in 2010 has managed to move a paltry 50 cars.

The man responsible for the grossly overstated projections was Hiroshi Tarumoto, who has now been replaced by Yamamoto Katurou as the president and general manager of Suzuki China.

Japan and China are not BFF's i wonder if this is just a bit of a reason for this too.

I would bet it has more to do with Suzuki not knowing how to sell cars. In amazed they're still in the states, nobody knows they exist and their cars aren't appreciably better than less expensive Korean offerings.
