Topping VW, Mercedes-Benz offers 'Tweet Race' car giveaway

10:31 AM

Volkswagen started its "flash sale" yesterday of three new Jettas for $5,995 each, but if you miss out, you can try for a free Mercedes-Benz: The fellow German maker is running a "Tweet Race" to Dallas for two free 2012 C250 coupes, plus Super Bowl tickets.

We posted the details here of the VW charity sale. The second of three goes off at noon ET today. It's on discount luxury site Gilt.com, so you still have a shot.

Mercedes is offering a chance on two of its not-yet-unveiled new C250 coupes with Super Bowl tickets in a Twitter-meets-The Amazing Race-meets-Cannonball Run road rally. The catch: To get into the race, you need to already be a social media addict. You enter via M-B's Facebook page and the eight competitors (four driver-navigator teams) will be chosen based on their Twitter Klout scores (if you have to ask, you don't have one) and their social media visibility (ditto).

The four teams will start from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, or Tampa and head for Dallas in Mercedes vehicles. Along the way they'll have to compete in yet-unknown challenges (sounds like Amazing Race "road blocks") for points.

Oh, and they also have to tweet -- "gallons of tweets" says M-B (whatever that means) that will "fuel" their overall score.

The team that gets to Dallas -- site of the Super Bowl XLV -- on time with a combination of the most tweets and most points will each win one of the new C-Class coupes. They then get to go to the February game -- but have to wait till the retail launch in October to get their new coupes.

More info on the Mercedes-Benz Tweet Race is here.
