Honda recalling Passport SUVs over suspension

Associated Press / Associated Press

Washington— Honda is recalling about 35,000 Passport sport utility vehicles to inspect brackets on the rear suspension that could detach and lead to a crash.

The recall announced today involves Passports from the 1998-2002 model years and is limited to 21 states and the District of Columbia where road salt is used during the winter.

Honda says the front bracket of the rear suspension lower trailing links could corrode and the bracket could break off from the frame. Honda spokesman Chris Naughton said the government received 33 complaints from owners but no injuries were reported.

The recall covers SUVs in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Naughton said the problem was not related to a similar recall involving Ford Windstar minivans. Ford has recalled more than 600,000 minivans in the U.S. and Canada this year over concerns the rear axle could break, affecting the vehicle's handling.

Honda said it expected to notify owners beginning Friday and encouraged owners to take their vehicles to an authorized dealer.

Owners can determine if their vehicle needs inspection by going to www.recalls.honda.com or calling (800) 999-1009 and selecting option 4.

1998-2002 Honda Passport Recalled For Suspension Rust

2000 Honda Passport LXEnlarge PhotoHonda has announced that it will recall nearly 36,000 Passport utility vehicles in the U.S. market, for a potentially serious safety issue due to rusting at brackets for the rear suspension.

If these brackets corrode to an extreme, it could lead to the lower-link bracket to separate from the frame, affecting vehicle handling, according to Honda, and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall is limited to so-called Salt Belt states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington D.C.

Honda is encouraging owners to take their Passport to the dealer as soon as they receive a notice by mail. Affected parts will be checked for rust and repaired or replaced if needed.

The recall campaign appears to be an expansion of one announced in September by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). That bulletin covers nearly 150,000 vehicles, though it includes related Isuzu Rodeo and Axiom models.

The Passport, which was essentially a rebadged Isuzu Rodeo and built in Indiana, wasn't the only fruit of those automakers' partnership. Honda also sold a version of the Isuzu Trooper, called the Acura SLX.

For more information, owners can call 800-999-1009 or go to www.recalls.honda.com.
