Calif. to give industry more time for diesel rules

Associated Press

Sacramento, Calif.— Businesses will have more time to comply with California's tough diesel emissions standards for trucks, buses and construction equipment under new, relaxed rules expected to be adopted by air quality officials.

The Air Resources Board was expected to vote today on amendments to its on-and-off-road diesel emissions standards, giving businesses more time to replace or upgrade aging equipment with filters, and exempting more vehicles from coverage under the rules.

The board said the rollback was meant to help industries struggling with the recession by giving them more time to comply and more ways to do so.

Among the changes to be adopted today , the new rules for cleaner construction equipment originally scheduled to begin in March 2010 for larger fleets will now start in 2014.

Clean air advocates say the rules mean more air pollution for Californians, especially for low income communities.
