Automotive News -- December 21, 2010 - 4:14 pm ET

Toyota has named Robert Young, 44, to head its North American purchasing operation, effective Jan. 3.

The post has been filled temporarily by Atsushi Kume since July 1, when Chris Nielsen, former vice president of purchasing for Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America Inc., was transferred to run Toyota's San Antonio truck plant.

Previously, Young was general manager of vehicle parts and materials purchasing, according to Toyota. In that job, he was responsible for overseeing the purchase of electrical, body, steel and structural commodities for Toyota in North America.

Young joined Toyota in 1995 and moved through several purchasing positions. In 2000, he was promoted to manager of construction, machinery and equipment, according to Toyota.

Young's appointment was one of several senior management changes announced by Toyota last week. Among them:

• Yoji Suzuki, 56, was named president of Toyota's West Virginia plant;

• Mike Price, 53, was named vice president of administration at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky.

• Bob O'Leary, 56, was appointed vice president of manufacturing and Susan Elkington, 39, was named vice president of administration, both at Toyota's Princeton, Ind. truck plant;

• Tim Platt, 44, was named vice president of information systems at Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America in Erlanger, Ky.

All of the appointments will go into effect in January.
