FIAT INKS DEAL WITH UNIONS TO PRODUCE PANDA IN ITALY

By Drew Johnson

Fiat has reached a deal with its unions that will see the company’s Panda small car built in Italy. The news comes just weeks after Fiat reached an agreement with the union that staff’s its Mirafiori, Italy plant.

Per the terms of the deal, Fiat will hire 5,600 new workers to staff Pomigliano, Italy factory next month. The deal also includes a $920 million factory investment from Fiat.

“This shows that there are two types of labor unions, one that carries out strikes and another that negotiates agreements,” Roberto Di Maulo, head of the Fismic union, said in the statement.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne previously indicated that the company would shift production from Poland to the automaker’s home country. Fiat was able to make the move after the Fismic, Fim, Uilm, Uglm and Associazione Quadri unions agreed to the new deal, which included a six-day work week.
