Rumorpile: Next Generation F-150 To Have An Aluminum Body

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford is considering using a aluminum body in the next generation F-150 pickup. The move would drop about 700 lbs, a 15% drop in weight from the current F-150.

The reason as to why Ford is exploring the aluminum pickup is due to upcoming CAFE regulations that by 2025, the U.S. vehicle fleet has to average 54.5 miles per gallon. Also, the regulations would ramp up fuel economy goals for vehicles of different sizes each year.

Analysts aren't too sure if Ford will go the aluminum body route, saying it wouldn't be too practical.

"Full-aluminum structured vehicles are much more expensive to insure because they are much more expensive to repair," he said, adding that most body shops cannot work on aluminum cars." said Jim Hall, analyst with 2953 Analytics LLP to the The Detroit News.

Analysts also point out aluminum isn't as durable as steel, which could pose a threat to the F-150 since part of its reputation is built on durability.

Analysts believe Ford will use more aluminum in the next generation F-150. Currently, Ford uses aluminum in the F-150's hood and the lower control arm on the SVT Raptor.

A source at Ford confirms this to The Detroit News, but also said a design hasn't been finalized.

Ford and Dodge have stepped up to the plate for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, producing the Mustang and Challenger race cars. Now, its Chevrolet's turn at the plate.

Today, the bowtie showed off the new 2013 Camaro NASCAR Nationwide Series racecar. The Camaro race car does closely resembles the actual production mode - though it's still a long way from identical. Underneath, the Camaro isn't that much different from the Ford, Dodge and Toyota.

“Chevrolet is proud to bring the Camaro to the NASCAR Nationwide Series in 2013. The Camaro Nationwide race car incorporates many of the distinctive styling elements of the production Camaro, including the unique power-bulge hood and deep recessed grille. In addition, the design incorporates the distinctive halo light rings and dual-port grille appearances, and the gold bowtie,” said Jim Campbell, vice president, Chevrolet Performance Vehicles and Motorsports.

The Camaro will make its debut at next year's Daytona race. For now, Chevrolet says the vehicle will be going through the wind tunnel and on-track testing to get it ready.

This week, Tesla announced that it's considering boosting production of its Model S sedan to 30,000 units in response to a waiting list that stretches for 10-11 months.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a conference call with analysts that the company is expecting to sell 5,000 Model S sedans by the end of 2012, with 20,000 sales expected next year. That could increase to 30,000 with the addition of a second shift. Currently, Tesla has 12,200 reservations for the Model S sedan.

"Our key objective for the rest of the year is to ramp production with a focus on quality and to rollout the Model S experience to a broader audience through customer deliveries, test drives and store openings," Tesla said in its second quarter 2012 shareholder letter.

For the past couple of weeks, Mazda has been teasing us with short Youtube videos showing off the new Mazda6 that will be shown at the Paris Motor Show in September.

But a Russian site called AutoWP has released a high-resolution image of the new 6 onto the web.

The new 6 looks to be a carbon copy of the Takeri concept, right down to the grill. This will be Mazda's second vehicle that will use the Kodo design language, the first being the CX-5 crossover.

Engines will include 2.0L Skyactiv inline four-cylinder engine and a 2.2L Skyactiv-D engine, both going through six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.

The new 6 will make its official debut at the Paris Motor Show in September.

Update: Earlier this morning, Mazda let loose some official pictures of the new 6 and announced the new 6 will premiere at the Moscow Auto Show next month. You might be scratching your head and wondering why Mazda picked Moscow as the place to launch the new 6. The reason is due to Russia emerging as a automotive market.

For the Russian market Mazda6, that will be a equipped with a SKYACTIV-G 2.0L gas engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda will still show the new 6 at the Paris Motor Show in September, likely announcing what each market will get when the 6 is launched.
