Oldsmobile Revived: 88 Concept

Recommended Posts

There is no such thing as a 4 door coupe, I'm sorry. I hate that terminology, but back to the Toronado, I'd like to either see a take on the first gen model or last gen. I always liked the final Trofeo models.

Part of the challenge associated with rebooting Olds, design wise, is trying to avoid having the cars reassemble Pontiacs. Especially if you'd like to incorporate a split grille design. My next concept may not feature a split grille. I will do some research on grilles Olds used in the past that do not feature a split design.

Some non-split grille designs:

I'm glad to hear it's still serving you well, Mr. Croc.

Eh, Princess Aurora has been more like Prostitute Aurora lately--giving me quite a shakedown! Still, though, she's absolutely beautiful and when behaving, she drives like a champ!!

Like them all they just want a bit of personal time from you every so often. :P

Do you guys think the Toronado has to be FWD?

Yes. Jay Leno making his Toronado RWD is as perverse as doing the reverse to a Corvette. It is a bit of a defining feature.

If you're having trouble with the proportions, keep in mind that only the final generation Toronado had a transverse engine. The differential in my Toronado is mostly forward of the oil pan and the engine sits between that and the firewall. Same goes for that first pictured Toronado above. Most of the forward length ahead of the wheels is just flare.

This picture shows how much they could have cut off the front if they wanted to be austere and yet not change the mechanicals.

agreed wholeheartedly. There's no such thing as a 4-door coupe, just a sedan with $h!ty rear headroom.

but hey, we all gotta suffer for style I guess.

The original Toronado's standard front-wheel drive was revolutionary in its day. Now that front-wheel drive is pretty much the norm for passenger cars, I think a new Toro would require something a little more forward thinking and advanced when it comes to what wheels are doing the driving.

Could someone give a quick overview of what was different with the Toro FWD compared to others especially since Drew says only Audi uses this today?

North-south engine placement instead of the more common transverse. The last American cars to use such an arrangement were the Chrysler LH models, IIRC.

wow, that is very cool to know, I have really looked closly under the Audi hood and did not know this about the Toro.

Question, was the north-south placement better for AWD over the more common transverse AWD of current CUV's?
