Subaru News: Spying: Subaru WRX

A few weeks after Subaru showed off the WRX Concept at the New York Auto Show, spy photographers caught the first images of a heavily camouflaged WRX making its way onto the Nürburgring.

While the concept was very radical and dare I say sexy, the one in the spy shots looks to be toned down from the concept and appears to be derivative of the current model. Now it could be Subaru is still trying to figure out what the final design will look like. We'll be keeping a close eye on this.

I like it! But those EJ20 / EJ25 engine needs some serious updating though. For one, DI is a must in this day and age. Secondly, the exhaust routing for turbocharger is about the worst I have seen... the piping is long and contorted between the exhaust ports and the rear mounted turbo... that silly cat converter ahead of the turbine really hurts efficiency... and, the entire exhaust ensemble and heat shielding under the engine removes one of the prime advantages of the boxer -- that the center of gravity of the engine can be very close to the ground.

This is one engine where they can really use a reverse flow design where the turbo is above and between the cylinder banks. The manifold should be cast as a single unit as the turbine housing. The compressed charge can then exit the FRONT of the engine and loop down to the bottom where the intake manifold(s) is either through an air-to-water or air-to-air heat exchanger.

Given that the boxer is confined to big bores and short strokes by the need to be narrow enough to fit between the front wheel wheels, instead of trying to run generous boosts, they should play to the advantageous of that configuration -- push up compression, reduce boost and make use of the high revving character of an over square engine. With compression at about 10.8:1 and boosts at a very modest 11.8 psi, you end up with about 220 lb-ft @ 3600~7600 rpm and 318 bhp @ 7600 rpm. An EJ style short stroke boxer has no problems revving to 8000 rpm. This will be the most "un-turbo" like turbocharged engine. The power delivery is very much like a high revving 3.0 liter class engine like the BMW S54 (E46 M3). Fast revving, extremely low lag, great economy at cruise (due to high compression). In fact, it'll be a perfect engine to be shared with an uprated FT86.

      At first glance, you might be wondering why a spy photographer took photos of what appears to be a standard Bentley Continental GT. But then why would this particular Continental GT have two fuel doors, one on each fender? The one on the right is the for fuel. The one on the left is most likely a charging port - leading to many thinking this is a mule for a plug-in hybrid variant of the Continental GT.
      What is most likely under the skin is a reworked version of Porsche’s hybrid system which is comprised of a turbocharged V6 and an electric motor. Bentley will be using a variant for the upcoming Bentayga Hybrid, although power figures are being kept quiet.
      Considering the undisguised state of this mule, we're thinking Bentley could reveal a production version sometime next year.

      It has been some time since we last reported on spy shots of the mid-engine Corvette. Buy a new set of spy photos have come out this week and give us our best look at the next-generation model. 
      The particular vehicle seen in the photos was being tested on Nürburgring and wasn't wearing as much camouflage as previous photos - hinting that development work is finishing up. The front end reminds us of the La Ferrari with a pointed nose, along with a fair amount of coolers behind the bumper. Large side air scoops provide cooling for whatever engine - likely a V8 of some kind. Towards the back, the Corvette retains the fastback shape and what appears to be a separate engine cover - possibly glass.
      The heavily covered-up interior was also photographed. We can make out a screen of some sort, possibly navigation. There also appears to be a paddle behind the steering wheel, hinting the particular model is an automatic/dual-clutch transmission.
      We're expecting to see the mid-engine Corvette debut sometime next year.

      Ford isn't being too discrete with the upcoming Police Interceptor Utility as these new set of spy shots reveal. 
      It confirms some of the key details we reported on a couple months back such as the evolutionary design, rear-wheel drive proportions, and a tapered roofline. The picture also brings out some new details such as a new front end with a trapezoidal grille, slightly more squared rear end, and new taillights.
      We still don't know any concrete details on the hybrid system that will be used on the Police Interceptor Utility aside from it returning a combined figure of 24 mpg.
      Expect the Police Interceptor Utility and its sister model, the Explorer to debut sometime later this year.
