Buick News: Rumorpile: General Motors Close To A Decision On Opel Cascada For Buick

Earlier this year, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said that if the Opel Adam and Cascada convertible were sold in the U.S., that it "would help Buick in this market and in China in terms of demographics." Since then, rumors and speculation have been flying on whether either one of these models would appear in the U.S.

This week, we reported that Opel Adam is under consideration for the U.S. But it will likely not come until the next-generation model is launched if it is given the green light.

Now, we have an update on the Opel Cascada.

Insiders told Edmunds this week that the Opel Cascada becoming a Buick model "could happen soon." The Cascada is expected to have an easier time getting over the U.S. than Adam since it is loosely based on the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal. No word yet on a possible date.

this would be a nice addition for Buick as a niche car. It makes more sense than trying to develop a new large coupe convertible.

Adam, and Astra/Verano 3 door hatch at a minimum should also be here. The 5 door hatch and wagon Astras would be nice niche models too.

With the Anthem coming, I would not bring over the Insignia wagon.

There's a huge market about to be up for grabs for a car like this- The Eos and C70 are being shown the door soon (next year?) and the status of the Lexus IS, Infiniti, and Chrysler 200 models aren't exactly certain either.

Other than BMW/Audi/Mercedes, what does that leave you with?

I do hope the y do it, and while they're at it, they should bring the Astra 3 door over as Buick.

This is needed for a mid level convertible and will sell well for the first 3-5 years and then tapper off once the convertible demand is met.

Adam is a no brainer as that is also needed in a mid luxury level that people want especially if they offer an awd version of it.

The Cascada is expected to have an easier time getting over the U.S. than Adam since it is loosely based on the Opel Insignia/Buick Regal. No word yet on a possible date.

Even Caddillac is changing its image from the fuddy duddy and its working. Buick could use a shot in the arm by getting a sexy looking car to a different target audience. The "Cascada" is certainly NOT your dad's Buick.

Buick needs to market the Turbo Verano a lot more. It is a fantastic little luxury compact

News comes today the the Chrysler 200 convertible is not going to be replaced. Even more reason to get this thing over here ASAP.

Glad to hear the update about the Cascada. I mean if it's going to benefit their market, then they shouldn't have hesistated to bring it over.

Buick needs to market the Turbo Verano a lot more. It is a fantastic little luxury compact

the used manual turbo Verano the dealer in my worktown had left that lot surprisingly quick. I don't know if it actually got sold or auctioned back. But it does in some way make me think there was a demand for it.

Thanks dfelt, I actually couldn't remember which used the line (since I think they were both considered "fuddy duddy") so I am sure you got my point. There is no question some brands get an "old people" label and I think Caddy is an example of how to get on board with a younger buying demographic. I started liking the Caddillacs more but maybe its the years and I am now old people.

The other posters show that a Turbo, a sleeker design and keeping up with personal technology is reaching more of an audience.

The air pollution in China is among the world in the world. However, like most people that live in Shanghai or Beijing, they just ignore it.

The fact is convertibles aren't all that common there yet and Chinese buyers will more than likely snatch up something that isn't all that common. It's all about having the nicest and newest things if you're part of the burgeoning middle class.

      Los Angeles - Lexus unveiled the 2021 Lexus LC 500 Convertible at the LA Auto Show today, ending speculation over whether the model was actually coming or not. 
      Typically when manufacturers make a convertible version of an existing car, significant weight penalties crop up as structural bracing is added to preserve rigidity. Lexus was able to move supports, and bracing to produce a convertible with only minimal weight gain while maintaining structural integrity. The LC Convertible’s suspension is tuned specifically to complement the subtle changes in weight between the two platforms, as a reduction of un-sprung weight in the front suspension improves the overall stroke. In the rear, engineers were able to further enhance structural rigidity by reshaping and relocating the rear suspension brace tower. Weight was reduced in the rear of the vehicle by utilizing a lightweight die-cast aluminum suspension brace, while a performance dampener is employed to enhance ride comfort.
      Power of the LC 500 Convertible is the same as the coupe, with a 5.0-liter V8 rated for 471 horsepower, 398 lb.-ft of torque paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. To make the engine’s throaty voice heard while the top is down, the engine’s intake pulses are naturally carried through a diaphragm into a sound pipe that carries the sounds, not the air itself, into the cabin to enhance the V8’s rumble, all done without any electronic enhancement. 
      The top is a 4 layer design and the mechanism includes a tonneau cover for when the soft top is stored. The top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 31 mph, while an animation on the display shows the tops progress through the motions. The cloth colors are offered in black or beige. Exterior paint options on the convertible include Ultra White, Smoky Granite Mica, Liquid Platinum, Atomic Silver, Obsidian, Caviar, Infrared, Cadmium Orange, Flare Yellow, and Nightfall Mica. Depending upon the exterior color chosen, three interior colors are available: Black, Circuit Red and Toasted Caramel.
      The car being shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show is a limited edition model with a run of 100 units. It comes in Structural Blue with a white interior and blue top. 
      The LC Convertible's HVAC system is designed to maintain temperature year round even with the top down. Neck heaters are included in the seats while the dash outlets are designed to direct heated or cooled air to the driver's hands.  For 2021 the LC Convertible gets Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and Apple Car Play standard along with a 10.3-inch multimedia screen.

      China is by far Buick's most important market. More than three quarters of all Buicks sold are sold in China.  To that end, it should be no surprise that China gets updated models before the U.S. and also get variants that never will see our shores. Even models that are dead in the US, like the Lacrosse and Verano, continue on selling well in China.
      The Buick Enclave is one example.  In the U.S. it is a full-size model, but in China it is downsized to a mid-size model approximately the size of the current GMC Acadia. Buick just debuted the new Enclave in China and while it is unlikely we'll see it over here, the U.S. model could get many of the same updates when it bows for 2021.
      Outside we see a revised front fascia with a new grill. The running lights have the familiar boomerang shape while the headlamps have moved lower into the bumper area.  A new grille insert is there with a wider horizontal slat that gives the Enclave more visual width.

      The inside is where the real story is at. Greatly updated, the infotainment system is seamlessly integrated into the dash and a new set of buttons takes the place of the Precision Control shifter. The console is the floating type with storage underneath. (Click image to enlarge)
      The Chinese Enclave is powered by GM's 2.0-liter turbocharged LSY engine making around 230 horsepower and coupled to a 9-speed automatic transmission.
