      Diesel is quite popular in Europe partly due to subsidies provided by governments - in this case, a lower tax rate on diesel fuel than gasoline. The thinking at the time was diesel engines burn their fuel more efficiently than gas engines, thus they contribute less to global warming. But as the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal would reveal, diesel vehicles aren't that much cleaner, producing more nitrogen oxide emissions than their gas counterparts. Now, one CEO from a German automaker is saying that maybe it is time to end the subsidies.
      “We should question the logic and purpose of diesel subsidies. The money can be invested more sensibly to promote more environmentally friendly technologies,” said Volkswagen CEO Matthias Müller to German paper Handelsblatt.
      This is quite the surprise as Volkswagen along with other German automakers said diesel still had a future due to new pollution reduction technologies. Also, Volkswagen did very well with the sales of diesel models. But with the dark cloud of the diesel emission scandal, Müller likely sees the writing on the wall and wants to get out ahead.
      Müller went on to say that he was in favor of banning older diesel vehicles from city centers. But he said that newer diesel vehicles should be exempt from the bans as they meet "stricter standards on nitrogen oxide emissions".

      Audi of America marks November sales increase as the new Q5, new-to-the U.S. A5 Sportback and Q7 lead consumer demand
      Q7 sales rose 26 percent; Q5 increased sales by 31 percent Sales of the new A5 Sportback totaled 1,130 SUV sales increased 23 percent HERNDON, Virginia, December 1, 2017 – Audi of America reported a November sales increase of 12 percent to 19,195 deliveries, as the Q7, new Q5 and the new-to-the U.S. A5 Sportback, lead consumer demand.
      November was the 83rd straight record sales month for Audi of America. The previous November record was set last year with 17,118 deliveries. Audi has now sold 199,534 vehicles in the U.S. this year. Year-to-date, Audi sales have increased 6.7 percent.
      "Positive consumer response to the Q7, new Q5 and new-to-the U.S. A5 Sportback shows that Audi's award-winning engineering and technology can succeed in a highly competitive market," said Cian O'Brien, chief operating officer, Audi of America. "Encouraged by robust consumer demand and our annual Season of Audi Sales event, we're positioned for a strong finish to 2017."
      Consumer demand for the new Q5 and Q7 helped drive November's sales increase.  Deliveries of the Q5 were up 31 percent to 5,467. The Q7 deliveries increased to 3,292, and have now increased 23 percent year-to-date. SUV sales for Audi increased 23 percent to 10,351.
      The addition of the A5 Sportback to the A5 Cabriolet and Coupe lineup has brought total sales to 2,243 over last November. Sales of the A5 Cabriolet and Coupe more than doubled to 1,113.

      Audi of America sets October sales record driven by consumer demand for the Q7 and new Q5
      Q7 sales rose 23 percent; Q5 increased sales by 44 percent Sales of the new A5 Sportback totaled 1,042 SUV sales increased 28 percent HERNDON, Virginia, November 1, 2017 – Audi of America reported an October sales increase of 9.6 percent to 19,425 deliveries, as the Q7, new Q5, and the new-to-the U.S. A5 Sportback, drove consumer demand.
      October was the 82nd straight record sales month for Audi of America. The previous October record was set last year with 17,721 deliveries. Audi has now sold 180,339 vehicles in the U.S. this year. Year-to-date, Audi sales have increased 6.1 percent.
      Deliveries of the Q7 were up 23 percent to 3,438. The Q5 deliveries rose to 5,416, and 15 percent year-to-date. Sales of the Q3 rose 4 percent to 2,021. SUV sales for Audi increased 28 percent to 10,875.
      Deliveries of the A5 Cabriolet, Coupe, and Sportback increased to 2,143 over last October, boosted by the addition of the A5 Sportback. Sales of the A5 Cabriolet and Coupe nearly doubled to 1,101.
      “Our results show that in a tight market, consumers respond to design, quality and technology,” said Cian O’Brien, chief operating office, Audi of America. “These results give us confidence for the remainder of the fourth quarter and heading into 2018.”

      Despite announcing and getting ready to launch their SkyActivX compression ignition engines, along with an electric vehicle, Mazda will still be working on diesel engines for the coming future.
      “There is a benefit to keep developing the diesel engine. Because when we put the engine on a big vehicle, the big vehicle needs big torque as well and if you look at the diesel engine it can produce the large torque, so we still believe the diesel engine has advantages,” said Ichiro Hirose, Mazda's managing executive officer of powertrain and vehicle development to CarAdvice.
      “There is actually huge room for further improvement in diesel engines. [Such as] refining of the combustion, of course, the efficiency will be better, also emission will be reduced as well. As far as the diesel engine is concerned there are still many things we can do in terms of evenly mix the air-fuel and burn. Many things we can do.”
      A recent patent filed by Mazda shows a twin-turbo diesel engine that also features a supercharger, most likely to help minimize turbo lag.
