Karma News: Fisker's New Owner Says Karma Production Incoming, Once We Fix 250 'Bugs'

Fisker, the automaker that doesn't seem to die is back in the news. This past week, the Wanxiang Group, Fisker's new owner, went on tour of the U.S. to met with officials and politicians in several states about plans. At one of the stops, Chairman Lu Guanqiu and President of the U.S. unit, Pin Ni spoke to reporters. Ni explained that company is planning on starting production of the Karma in the near future. But before then, the company needs to fix 250 “bugs” in the Karma and have a 'reliable supply of high-quality components'.

"At Fisker, the biggest issue is to solve the problems. There are about 250 bugs in this we need to de-bug. I often say that Wanxiang can afford to make cars, but Wanxiang cannot afford to make bad cars,” Ni told reporters. “Our goal is to fix all the issues and get the car back on the road, but this car has to be a good cart. It cannot be a car with problems … We want to make this car in the United States. This too is determined. But in terms of a detailed plan, we are still evaluating.”

But Wanxiang has bigger ambitions for Fisker. Chairman Lu Guanqiu said the company is working on a new Fisker model that will be launched in 2017. Guanqiu didn't go into specifics about the new model or where it will be built.

Interesting, If they truly fix their bugs and polish the car to be near perfect, they might just get some sales and if they add other auto options say a hybrid like the awesome VOLT, they could get even more.

Every car is going to have bugs.  The Karma was a fantastic design outside, but felt kit-kar like inside.  I suppose they are focusing on the Karma because most of the work to get it on the road is done, however, I think they need to get the Atlantic out ASAP as that is a vehicle more people will be able to afford.

      Today Henrik Fisker announced the name for Fisker's upcoming EV SUV. Called the Ocean, it has been shown in a number of concept studies over the past year.
      The concept wears a solar roof to help with charging and retractable door handles. Looking mildly like a Range Rover Evoque, the vehicle is being produced with many recycled materials. Fisker claims this will make the SUV one of the most sustainable vehicle available. 
      The starting price is claimed to be around $40,000 and have a range of over 300 miles through its 80 kWh enhanced lithium-ion batteries. Rear-motor, rear drive and dual-motor all wheel drive will be available.  The SUV should hit the market in late 2021, about a year after Tesla's Model Y goes on sales.  Fisker is offering a Tesla-like online-only sales model with "nationwide concierge service". 
      Henrik also announced that there will be some big news on November 27th, the day before Thanksgiving, when online reservation become available.  The production ready prototype will be revealed in January 2020.
      Fisker has been late in delivering on its promises before, so if you're waiting for one of these, you may be waiting a little longer than planned.

      Jaguar Land Rover has announced a temporary halt in production in November as the threat of disruption from a No-Deal Brexit looms.  BMW and Toyota have already announced plans for temporary work stoppages at their UK factories. All four of JLR's UK factories are affected. 
      Although No-Deal Brexit is still not a certainty. Manufacturers like JLR have to plan for the worst.  JLR uses 20 million parts a day and needs to have those parts available at just the right time. 
      Toyota will be stopping production of the Corolla Hatchback and Avensis on November 1st. BMW is planning on stopping Mini production in early November, but Rolls-Royce and BMW engine plants are expected to continue production.

      Jaguar Land Rover has announced a temporary halt in production in November as the threat of disruption from a No-Deal Brexit looms.  BMW and Toyota have already announced plans for temporary work stoppages at their UK factories. All four of JLR's UK factories are affected. 
      Although No-Deal Brexit is still not a certainty. Manufacturers like JLR have to plan for the worst.  JLR uses 20 million parts a day and needs to have those parts available at just the right time.

      We reported back in April that the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma would be consolidated to a single modular platform for their respective next generations. Now Toyota is making a $391 million dollar investment into its San Antonio production line to help smooth the way.  The investment is not expected to create any new permanent jobs. 
      The new platform, internally called F1, will first appear in the next generation Tundra expected in 2021 and eventually spread to all of Toyota's pickups worldwide.  Tacoma will move to the F1 platform in 2023 or 2024. The new platform will be capable of electrification. One of the engines rumored for the Tundra is a Twin-Turbo V6 Hybrid with 450 hp and 500 lb.-ft of torque
      The Tundra is the oldest full-size pickup on the market today, first debuting in 2007 with the last major update done in 2014.

      Well, after over 13 years with Direct Energy and surviving multiple rounds of layoffs, my 9 lives with the company appear to be up, the latest round of layoffs got me. I will be finishing out the year and then be on the hunt for a new position in January. If anyone knows of project manager positions that are open in the Pittsburgh area, please let me know.
