Mini News: MINI Decides To Cut Back On Their Lineup

For awhile, we've been reporting on MINI's plans to expand their lineup to possibly ten models. But now, the company is reversing that decision. Bloomberg reports that MINI's parent company, BMW has decided that MINI has too many models and is cutting it down from eight to five models.

Peter Schwarzenbauer, MINI's brand chief says the automaker will focus on “superhero” vehicles such as the three-door hardtop.

“Like a superhero, each of these cars has its own personality and unique capabilities. It is important to find the right balance between growth on the one hand and profitability on the other,” said Schwarzenbauer.

Schwarzenbauer goes onto say that this new focus means that three to four of the current models will remain in the lineup, though he doesn't say which models will be cut. Likely models to be cut include the MINI Coupe and Roadster.

Even with these cuts, MINI isn't giving up on introducing new models. Schwarzenbauer says that the automaker is planning to introduce an electric vehicle “soon” once it appears that zero-emission driving becomes a must in urban areas.

What is it with German brands and their desire to call each and every body-style or engine-option variation a model?

 

Back in the day, you bought an Oldsmobile Cutlass, but that wasn't the end of the story. You could have bought a 2-door coupe, 2-door hard top, 4-door sedan, 4-door hard top, convertible, wagon, or a 442... or you bought an Eighty-Eight, again with just about all of those available variations.   Up to 14 different options, but in the end, just two models. 

 

Mini has 8 "models" but they are all just variations on two cars... at it's base, Mini has the Mini Cooper which is the basis for 6 "models" and the Countryman which is the basis for 2 "models" 

 

BMW is just as bad.  Audi is worse.

8 to 5...  I assume they will cut the 2 seater models--roadster and coupe--and maybe the Paceman (I've only seen one of these).

So they're miniaturizing the lineup, while making the cars bigger.  Makes so much sense.

They should make cuts. They need the original, the Clubman, convertible and the Countryman because it is more like a crossover. That is about it. They should worry more about reliability or offering a high mpg diesel rather than body styles.

Paceman and the new 5 door shouldn't be there in their current form. Period. The Roadster is something I like, and really doesn't take away frm tyhe MINI brand IMHO... Coupe is butt ugly.

 

I think instead of the 5-door they should have planned for Clubman (similar to current model) and Clubman L (5-door as poer the concept) versions of the estate. And they should have brought back a MINI Moke but based on the Clubman 4x4 instead of spending money on the Paceman development.

This might also be because more and more people are favoring SUV's and so they have to compete with the market.

I have always said that there is two types of people on this world: those who like Mini and those who don't. 

In my opinion, Mini should never disappear, but I think BMW regrets buying it, because it probably doesn't sell as they thought and  personally think that the BMW ruined the history of this car buy buying it. I hope that this decison of cutting back on their models will be a step forward even though it might not seem that way.

MINI has been incredibly successful and a cash machine in BMW's world. What other brand could sell EUR 40K cars that small? Cutting the MINI model range has to do with not whoring out the brand; they have the FWD BMWs with that 2-Series naming confusion for that purpose :D

I think that the only thing BMW regrets is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to expand the Mini brand into the mainstream family car market. I'm sure BMW would love to be able to compete with the Fusion, Mondeo, and Focus.

I think that the only thing BMW regrets is that it is difficult, if not impossible, to expand the Mini brand into the mainstream family car market. I'm sure BMW would love to be able to compete with the Fusion, Mondeo, and Focus.

 

 

Yes, I think this is the real reason why BMW bought Mini, but I think they already knew that it wasn't a safe bet at all. Your "theory" seems interesting, but I don't see why BMW wants to compete with those models by owning another brand. I mean, their sales are pretty stable and I think they should have produced some 1-series-like models, just to try competing with the cars you mention.

      Nissan has expanded its probe into former chairman Carlos Ghosn with the investigation into various European subsidiaries that may bring more criminal charges.
      Automotive News has learned from sources that the focus of the investigation will be around the Renault-Nissan BV based in the Netherlands. This was set up by the two automakers back in 2002 to be a strategic management company that oversees the alliance. But one source says that Nissan is planning to look into "as many as a dozen other Nissan-affiliated subsidiaries set up in the Netherlands," for possible financial misconduct. Japanese prosecutors are looking into some of the companies with the help of Nissan.

      This move may signal that the scandal may have reached outward of Japan and bring investigations right to Renault's doorstep. Automotive News also notes this could "further complicate" the delicate relations between the two.
      That neatly transitions us to a report from Reuters where a source reveals that Renault has told Nissan not to contact its directors ahead of a December 13th meeting of their board. The source says "such contact was outside the agreed channels for communication of the sensitive findings."
      As we reported back on Friday, Nissan offered Renault "a presentation that summarized the evidence" to help assuage some suspicious held by the French automaker. Renault declined, asking Nissan for the "presence of lawyers and the full report on the allegations." This reportedly came earlier this week as officials from Nissan met with Renault's legal team in France.
      The meeting tomorrow will see the members of the board discuss the findings of Nissan's investigation and debate the future of Carlos Ghosn.
      Spokespeople for Nissan and Renault declined to comment.

The brand which expected annual sales to total 100,000 vehicles by 2017, peaked at about 66,500 models in 2013 according to Automotive News. Sales through the first ten months of the years have totaled 37,359. This isn't good news for the 127 standalone Mini dealers in the U.S. as it makes it tough for owners to justify the investment. In 2016, 45 percent of Mini dealers reported being unprofitable. A year later, that number rose to 54 percent.
      "As a dealer and a manufacturer you have a vision of where the brand is going, and you have to prepare for it. In this case, the vision now isn't what it was when some of these stores were built," explained Jason Willis, a member of the Mini National Dealer Council and general manager of fixed operations at Willis Auto Campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
      Mini's parent company, BMW is considering various options to help improve profitability. One of the options on the table is allowing dealers to integrate Mini into their BMW stores. To make sure the brands stand apart, Mini is looking into having a separate showroom with dedicated employees for sales and service.
      "We've given a lot of flexibility for the dealers to present ideas. This is to help make sure that, until our next wave of product, and the market becomes more favorable, our dealers each remain a strong and going concern," said Thomas Felbermair, vice president of Mini Region Americas.
      But there comes an issue with this idea. Mini has 31 dealers that don't have a BMW dealership that they can integrate into. A spokesman for Mini said they "are looking at additional forms of support for stores that remain fully exclusive," but didn't expand into how they plan on doing that.

      When Ford introduced the GT, they made it very clear it would be a limited run affair. 500 models would be built over the course of two years. Then the company expanded the amount to 1,000 vehicles that would be built over four years. Now, Ford has expanded the pool of GTs again.
      An additional 350 GTs will be built, bringing the grand total to 1,350. This also means a longer production run. Previously, Ford was going to wrap up production in 2020, but has pushed it back to 2022. If you were one of the many people who applied for a GT and didn't get one, Ford will be opening the application process one more time beginning on November 8th and have it running for 30 days. Prospective owners will find out if they got the approval early next year.
      “By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers,” said Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance director.
      Somehow, we doubt many Ford GT owners will have the same view.

      Ford is re-opening the application window to customers hoping to join the exclusive group of Ford GT owners starting Nov. 8 for select global markets. Prospective owners will be able to submit their applications for 30 days at FordGT.com.
      Successful applicants will work with the Ford GT Concierge Service for a personalized purchase experience of cars produced in the 2020 to 2022 calendar years.
      Production of the Ford GT – powered by a twin-turbocharged, 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine and featuring a carbon fiber architecture, active aerodynamics and 216 mph top speed – began in December 2016.
