New Renault Megan is torque of the town

Recommended Posts

IF you plan to take on the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra, Volkswagen Golf and Peugeot 308, you need plenty of engine choices and the third-generation Renault Megane doesn’t fall shy.

The French firm have added three fuel-efficient Stop & Start units.

There’s a 1.2-litre direct injection petrol, the TCE115, a Stop & Start version of the familiar 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel and the model we looked at – the 1.6 dCi 130 diesel.

One of the best diesels currently on sale, this one is a good choice if you plan to use it for towing, with a useful 320Nm of torque meaning a sub-10second rest to 60mph time on the way to 124mph.

This Megane moves the game on in terms of refinement but get underneath the car and you’ll realise that many of the underpinnings are similar to the second-generation model.

The front end now features the ubiquitous LED daytime running lights while the bumper gets a gloss black finish with chrome highlights and the selection of wheels has been entirely revised.

The cabin comes with updated interior trims, including a two-tone leather pack available in a choice of two finishes in the UK.

The GT-Line trims get specific boomerang-shaped LED lights, visible red upholstery stitching and a sports steering wheel incorporating thumb rests, plus Renault Sport-badged door sill guards and dashboard trim strip. The colour palette has been adjusted, too, with the addition of Azzurro Blue and Arctic White.

I have a silver 2012MY 1.5dCi GT Line wagon (or Sports Tourer as Renault calls it), the one with the boomerang shaped LEDs, and I'm very pleased with the car. The only thing I don't like is that the Bluetooth and USB connections have reset on their own one or twice...
