Ford News: Ford Focus, C-Max Not To Be Produced At Michigan Assembly After 2018

After 2018, the Ford Focus and C-Max will not be calling the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, MI home. Automotive News reports that Ford will end production of the two models at the plant in 2018 as a sign the company sees slow demand for small vehicles to continue in the future. The company didn't say what vehicles would take their place or where the Focus and C-Max will be built in the future.

 

"We currently are reviewing several possible options for the Focus and C-Max and will share details once our studies are complete,” said Kristina Adamski, Ford spokeswoman in an email.

 

The news comes on the heels of the layoffs at the plant where the third shift and 700 jobs were cut. This also comes a couple weeks before talks with the UAW begin.

 

“We actively are pursuing future vehicle alternatives to produce at Michigan Assembly and will discuss this issue with UAW leadership as part of the upcoming negotiations,” the company said in statement.

oh oh, what will produce in this country anymore?

 

regulations, whether it be on the cars, or the workplace in general, plus the high costs of maintaining employees again due to taxes and regs, and the need to keep up with frequent redesigns etc.  i bet there will be more of this in the near future

Funny, Volkswagen, Toyota, Subaru, Chrysler, Dodge, Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, et al seem to be able to product cars in large numbers here. methinks the real cause may be elsewhere.

Small cars equal small profit margins, at least normally. That being said, I believe that the Chevy Sonic is still being produced in Orion.

Ford CEO probably wants a bigger bonus so probably will move production to Mexico.  Another screwing of the working class american citizen

Rumor is that the either the Fusion will come back to the states (trade with Focus) or that "so called Ranger" will be built there.....

It would make sense to bring the fusion back here and send the focus out to Mexico if that is the case. Fusion and mid size demand doesn't fluctuate so badly with gas prices like compacts do.

People on other boards say the Fusion will stay in Mexico because of South American sales. I think the Focus will go the same plant that makes the Fiesta, and I have read that the Fiesta may go to Thailand. What will go to the Focus Michigan plant, if anything, is a mystery.

This really, really sucks. the Focus was a great compact when it came out in 2011, but Toyota and Honda and Chevy and even Hyundai threw a curve ball with their compacts "focused" on really just being competent appliances with style in spades. Obviously the new Cruze is the real deal on paper and in looks. Honda's getting their Civic back to business; and even Toyota has some neat tricks like LED lights and solid value. Doesn't really leave room for a Focus that is a half-size too small, and weighs more than it should. And a myriad array of options that would make sense for a Lincoln, not a Ford. And the ridiculousness of no HIDs or LEDs for illumination for top trims that aren't the ST seal the deal. I wouldn't even consider the Focus ST a Focus as much as it is just a Ford hot hatch. It just changes so much over the plebian lesser models.

 

The real killer had to be the DCT, though it's much improved, and I can bear witness to that as well.

 

C-Max was a stupid idea. They should have kept the Escape Hybrid.

I can tell you from scouring other web forums I believe the tough dual clutch tranny and the now somewhat dated engine are probably the two things that hold the focus back most in the market.  Lots of folks just do not like the DCT, well perhaps if it weren't flawed........  I think the myford touch and sync really hosed the car too.  Ford needs to brighten the interior, so much black plastic and black burlappy seats!

I think the cramped interior holds the Focus back as much as the engine and transmission. The Focus has one of the smallest interiors in its class.

      Ford has launched the configurator for the 2019 Ranger today and we got our first look at pricing. It will begin at $25,395 for the XL extended-cab model with 2WD - price includes $1,095 destination charge. Pricing for the rest of the lineup is as followed,

      The One Ford plan brought in by former CEO Alan Mulally helped the automaker weather through some very tough times. A key part of this plan was cutting back on the number of architectures used around the world - from 30 to nine. But Ford is planning to go further with reducing them.
      Last week, Ford's head of product development and purchasing, Hau Thai-Tang revealed the company will be reducing the number of platforms to just five.
      "This is not saying One Ford was wrong. This is building on the strategy of One Ford and evolving from it," said Thai-Tang at the 2018 J.P. Morgan Auto Conference in New York.
      The move to five platforms will help save costs: According to Thai-Tang, 70 percent of a vehicle's value can be managed through modular platforms. It will also improve the efficiency of Ford's suppliers.
