Back from a short hiatus, the Honda Ridgeline made its debut at the Detroit Auto Show this afternoon.

 

Compared to the last Ridgeline, the new model looks more truck-ish. The front end boasts a more butch version of the Pilot's grille and larger headlights. The side profile is very Pilot aside from the top half of the rear cut off.

 

The bed is slightly larger than the previous Ridgeline with measurements of five feet wide and five feet, four inches long. Yes, the in-bed trunk is still here complete with drain plug. Also, the tailgate can fold down or swing out.

 

Power comes from a 3.5L V6 and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Oddly, Honda didn't give out any power figures for the V6. But if this is the same engine as the Pilot, so it would not be surprising if the Ridgeline comes with 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive with Honda's i-VTM4™ torque vectoring AWD technology is optional.

 

Honda will begin sales of the Ridgeline sometime in the first half of 2016.

The Ridgeline's standard, lockable In-Bed Trunk provides secure storage space with no compromise to bed utility and now features a fully flat floor while still including a drain plug for easier cleaning and evacuation of water from the trunk. The dual action tailgate is hinged both at the bottom and along its left side, opening down or to the side, which enables easier loading and unloading of heavy and bulky items without having to reach over the open tailgate. AWD Truck is interesting, I do not think anyone else has ever offered a truck with AWD. Plenty of 4x4 but not AWD.

 

Pathetic is the V6 engine. So much wasted horsepower with pathetic Torque.

 

Over all not impressed with the looks or the rest of the truck for that matter.

 

Continuation of Dull Bland Styling.

 

WTF, Blah Truck and they get CAR OF THE YEAR?

 

HONDA has failed on all fronts and the stupid press continues to think they are gods walking on water.

 

I do not see this selling much at all except for an initial bump to the existing Ridgeline customers who want the same blah trucks.

It's an interesting scenario. One one hand, it appears much more like a 'proper' pick up, whereas the prior version was a bit more unique. Question stands; is that going to be more attractive for honda buyers, or less? IE; now that it feels more 'trucky', will it suffer in comparison to so many established small trucks?

 

There's no actual cues I can put my finger on, but it has a strong early 2000's look to it.

much better looking, (except the rear doors look out of proportion) ....should appeal to Honda bangers.....interior does not look trucky at all,

 

this thing does have a following, looks like a good update for those that liked the last one.

I just don't understand why anyone would buy of these. The GM twins, and hell, even the Tacoma, offer such good road manners, you'd have to be dumb to throw away their off-road ability and ruggedness for what will undoubtedly be vehicle that costs the same but is vastly inferior in so many ways.

 

I think Honda should have just left the Ridgeline name to history. Use the money to give as a new S2K.

I 100% agree here.   Can't speak on the 16 Tacoma, but the Colorado Z71 I drove was just fantastic.  Best road manners in a pickup, smooth ride, gtsy engine, and still all the truck capabilities.  At best this will be a very light selling niche vehicle.

I completely agree. The only thing I could think of is maybe in FWD form it gets pretty dang good mpg, for what it is. 

 

But yes, the other two,heck even the Nissan, all do the small truck thing so much better.

Agreed, super nice, especially when you have a load on (imagine if you will... MULCH), you have a flat tire, and realize the spare is accessed through a trapdoor located in the BED FLOOR.  Or how about when you're towing and you realize the tongue weight of the trailer is actually taking weight OFF the primary drive (AND STEERING) wheels?

 

FWD is simply stupid for anything purporting to be a "real" working truck.  And a Dodge Rampage/Plymouth Scamp at least had the decency to put the spare under the bed... not INSIDE it.

 

frogger, this is not meant to insult you, I just had to post my views on this useless contraption called Ridgeline.

Oh; it's FWD?? If I had bothered to think about it, that would be obvious, but who bothers to ponder the specs of a Honda truck?
This is the Dodge Rampage / VW Rabbit pickup experiment all over again, isn't it?

 

The '4x8 with tailgate down' thing is kind of a non-issue- you lay 4x8 stuff on the top edge of the closed tailgate; you don't drive with the gate down, slipping your load on the road at the first intersection. I only gots a 6.5-ft bed, never stops me. But you can't sell it as a 'full size bed…. with the tailgate down' ; that's ridiculous.

I think it is good that it looks more like a pickup, the old Ridgeline looked awkward and not really a truck not really an SUV.   It should be a pretty strong competitor to the other mid-size pick ups, the Honda 3.5 V6 is smooth and reliable, it should have a car-like ride.  It isn't my sort of vehicle, but I think it will be more successful than the last Ridgeline.

I am no fan of this truck but I would pay attention to it.

 

This is the kind of vehicle that could start a new movment easy. The past model even with FWD and a crappy interior did well enought to continue here. This one is closer to where it needs to be.

 

There are many in rhe CUV maket that this truck appeals to and it does all they like with a litlte better MPG and they like it. It is more of a more useful UTE than than a truck and they are ok with it. This is not a VW pick up as this one will carrly larger items with more ease. It will carry the bulky items better than a CUV.

 

As for AWD GMC has offered it on the Denalu trucks as in full time AWD in the past and I think it is still offered but I would have to check.

 

To be honest this truck may do better for what it's not than what it is. This is the Anti truck and some like that.

​Also you have the blind Honda buying factor. I think Honda may do better than Nissan and Toyota would with a full size here.

​Now I would be affraid of the coming Hyundai truck. Styling alone will sell it as it is sharp looking I hate to say. Word is in the artical I read that it is a matter of when not if that it is built. That one if it has any real capacity it could make an impact on the future of trucks. It has that look GM played with in show trucks but just never had the nerve to pull off.

The Canyon is not AWD, it is 2WD or 4WD like most trucks. There is no difference in the Denali. 

 

The Denali trucks and full-size SUVs, and Escalade used to come with active full-time AWD, but they are now 2wd/4wd.

The full size GMC Denali truck is offered in 1/2 as a AWD that is not available on the Chevy. Or at least that was the way it was. I drove one a couple years ago and it had the bigger engine and AWD standard along with a Power sun roof. But for $70K it should have had that.

The Canyon at this point is just regular shift on the fly 4 wheel drive. At least that is all I have seen and I did not see AWD on the Denali Canyon.

The Full size Serra is what I was referring too. To be honest GMC should make AWD standard on all Denali models but it is what it is.

I think there is a hit to capability if they do AWD instead of 4x4.  There is also a hit on fuel economy when running AWD all the time, disconnect the drive from the front wheels and get a MPG boost.  People in southern states don't need 4x4 like us northerners do, so no point in forcing it on them at additional cost.

That is a mistake on MotorTrend's part.  It is not full time.

 

In this picture, look through the steering wheel on the lower left side.  That's the dial that lets you turn the truck to 2wd mode... thus, not "full-time".

So the Escalade and Denali full-size SUVs are not AWD anymore!

 

FAILURE!!!  Sorry call me a snob, call me what you will but AWD is what is expected on Luxury SUV's and not a 4WD system with a Low Range. 

 

I now have to go test drive the new Escalade as I love my 2006 Escalade ESV Platinum and I love the new body and was excited to finally upgrade as I did not like the 3rd generation Escalade at all. But Cadillac does not indicate if it is an all the time 4WD system so in essence like AWD or if you only drive in 2WD till you are on rain or snow or off road. So does anyone know if the 4WD mode is like AWD 4HI working all the time or is this a RWD Bias that you have to put into 4WD?

 

AWD is what set Cadillac apart from Chevy and most GMC except the Denali. 

 

AWD is and should be standard on the Cadillac Escalade. This makes me think some old Fart from the old days is screwing up Cadillac again or did the new Cadillac leader screw this up?

 

If the new SRX has AWD, why not Escalade?

Awesome, that's what I figured. It sounds really odd for a mid-size truck to be AWD to begin with.

Uhhh... Looks decent.. worse than the other 4 mid-sizers. FWD better return spectacular fuel economy. Buy a Tacoma or a Canyon Duramax.

What is really the difference between a full time 4wd and AWD?  My 99 Z71 has a multimode 4wd hat includes 2WD, high, low, and full-time.  And in the fulltime mode it will transfer power between axles for traction.  03-04 Dakotas also offered a fulltime 4wd system with full-time, 4 high, and 4 low.  I am pretty sure the Canyon is available with a fulltime 4wd system as well.  it is one of the things I liked in the Canyon vs the Colorado.  It would still have a 2WD setting btw. 

 

The only thing really special is the torque vectoring in the Honda system and one has to think what ood is that gonna be on a truck?

      When we last reported on the date change of the Detroit Auto Show, organizers had made the final decision on what month it would be held beginning in 2020 - either October or June. A new report from The Detroit News says June will be month that will be announced at a press conference on July 24th.
      Sources tell the paper that back in January that the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA), organizers of the show sat down and started discussions as to moving the show. Originally, DADA had October as the month as it would move the show from the harshness of winter and give some breathing room from the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
      But plans changed after The Detroit News interviewed General Motors' senior vice president of global communications, Tony Cervone. He said a move to June had the potential to create a "massive festival of automotive" for consumers. The hope is that this event would draw people into visiting the various venues and concerts in Detroit. Organizers released a teaser video late last month showing outdoor test tracks and vehicle displays.
      This brings us to a new twist. Ford is urging DADA to pull elements from the Goodwood Festival of Speed for this reimagined show. The Festival of Speed, being held this weekend, features a hill climb with a variety of racing and production cars, and a moving auto show that allows the press and would-be buyer to experience new vehicles. It should be noted that Ford has been a sponsor of the Festival of Speed for 23 years.

      Previous Page Next Page The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is no more for 2019, but that doesn't mean it hasn't influenced the lineup.
      Lets begin with the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Under its dual cowl hood is a revamped supercharged 6.2L V8 producing 797 horsepower and 707 pound-feet of torque. Power flows through an eight-speed automatic to the rear-wheels. Dodge claims the Redeye is the "most powerful production V8" and "quickest production muscle car," most likely because the Demon doesn't exist anymore. Here are the numbers,
      0-60 mph: 3.4 seconds Quarter-Mile: 10.8 seconds Top Speed: 203 mph This increase in power is due to Dodge upgrading 25 major components including a bigger supercharger, strengthened engine internals, high-capacity fuel injection system, second-fuel pump, and improved lubrication. The Demon also hands over the Torque Reserve system that builds up power before launching from a standing stop, and After-Run Chiller that cools down the supercharger when the engine is off.
      Down one rung is the regular Hellcat. Dodge has increased horsepower to 717, along with adding Launch Assist, Torque Reserve, Launch Control, and Line Lock. A dual-cowl hood is standard.
      Both Hellcat models will have the option of a widebody that features larger fender flares to make room for the wider tires.
      Dodge also announced the R/T Scat Pack Widebody that features the same wide fender flares as the Hellcat, rear spoiler, SRT tuned chassis, and adaptive dampers. The changes make a huge difference as the Scat Pack Widebody is about two seconds faster per lap than the standard Scat Pack. All Scat Pack models get Launch Assist, Launch Control, Line Lock, SRT Drive Modes, and SRT Performance Pages.
      Wrapping up the 2019 Challenger lineup is the R/T and GT rear-wheel drive. The previously-optional Super Track Pak is now standard for both models and includes a performance suspension, enhanced steering, a new front splitter and hood, 20-inch wheels, and bolstered cloth Houndstooth seats.

      Functional and intimidating exterior design
      The newly designed, fully functional dual-snorkel hood provides maximum air intake to the supercharged powerplant and pays homage to the distinctive design themes from some of the most famous mid-1960s and early-1970s Dodge muscle cars, like the 1970 Dart Swinger and 1971 Demon.

      Even the dual carbon or gunmetal stripe packages have been skillfully tailored to enhance the new dual-snorkel hood design.
       
      In addition to the new dual-snorkel hood, the exterior of Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye receives enhanced badging showing a sinister red jewel-like eye design on the Hellcat that jumps off the Midnight Grey Metallic finish fender badge. A new die-cast SRT emblem on the supercharger housing also features the new Redeye logo. 
       
      Available on Challenger SRT Hellcat and R/T Scat Pack models for 2019 is the Widebody Package first seen on the 2018 Challenger SRT Hellcat. Wider fender flares add 3.5 inches to the overall width of the vehicle resulting in a more muscular, planted stance. The new flares are expertly integrated into the body design with concealed attachments to amplify the Challenger SRT Hellcat’s width. The front side marker lights are styled to flow with the shape of the fender flares.
       
      An available new Satin Black spoiler on both SRT Hellcat and R/T Scat Pack models is both wider and longer, offering a more expressive look while meeting all SRT performance objectives.
       
      Standard on 2019 SRT Hellcat models are 20 x 9.5-inch SRT Low Gloss Black lightweight performance wheels while new 20 x 9.5-inch split five-spoke wheels with Brass Monkey finish are available.   
       
      Customers opting for the Widebody Package will get available split-five spoke, 20 x 11-inch “Devil’s Rim” forged aluminum wheels, riding on sticky 305/35ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires for improved performance while accentuating the menacing look.
      Beating the heat
      Heat is the enemy of any high-performance powertrain, so Dodge//SRT engineers looked for more ways to keep the intake air as close to the optimum temperature as possible.
       
      One key to the engine’s imposing power output is air – and plenty of it. The new, low-restriction, dual snorkel hood is fully functional and sealed to the air box.
      When combined with the Air Catcher headlamp and an inlet near the wheel liner, these three sources give the SRT Hellcat Redeye’s high-output engine an 18 percent greater air-flow rate than last year’s SRT Hellcat engine (1,134 cubic feet per minute). At full power, this is the equivalent flow rate to 89 adults simultaneously emptying their lungs in 1 second.
       
      The revised air inlet path on the new dual snorkel hood results in an intake air temperature reduction of 4 degrees Fahrenheit.
       
      The innovative, award-winning SRT Power Chiller™, standard on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye only, diverts the air-conditioning refrigerant from the interior cabin to a chiller unit mounted by the low-temperature circuit coolant pump. Charge air coolant, after being cooled by ambient air passing through a low-temperature radiator at the front of the vehicle, flows through the chiller unit, where it is further cooled. The chilled coolant then flows to the heat exchangers in the supercharger.
       
      The SRT Power Chiller™ lowers the intake air temperature further on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, resulting in improved performance.
       
      The After-Run Chiller, also an industry first, minimizes any heat soak effects, allowing the engine to stay in optimum operating temperature. When the engine shuts down, the After-Run Chiller, now standard across the Challenger SRT Hellcat model lineup in 2019, keeps the engine’s cooling fan and low-temperature circuit coolant pump running to lower the supercharger/charge air cooler temperature. The driver can track the supercharger coolant temperature on the SRT Performance Pages in the 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen and know in real time when the supercharger is at the optimum temperature for another run.
      2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup: more horses, expanded technologies and more features  
      From 717 to 797 horsepower, Dodge is delivering the most powerful Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup ever.  Both a manual and automatic transmission are available to handle the immense horsepower and torque output.
       
      The Challenger SRT Hellcat receives a standard Tremec six-speed manual transmission, while the efficient TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission is available.
       
      The Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye’s supercharged high-output engine is paired to the TorqueFlite 8HP90 eight-speed automatic transmission. Internal changes to the transmission include an upgraded torque converter that delivers an 18 percent increase in torque multiplication when compared with the standard Challenger SRT Hellcat.
       
      All 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat models are loaded with standard performance features, including:

Launch Assist reduces loads in the driveline from wheel hop by up to 20 percent Torque Reserve — becomes active once the engine speed passes 950 rpm. The system closes the bypass valve, “prefilling” the intake with boost, manages fuel flow to cylinders and manages spark timing to balance engine rpm and torque Launch Control — holds the engine at optimal launch RPM and waits for the driver to release the brake. Launch Ccontrol then uses engine torque management to optimize wheel slip for maximum acceleration. All 2019 Challenger models with Launch Control receive an improved system that increases hold time from five to 10 seconds for optimal launch and consistent straight-line acceleration Line Lock — engages the front brakes to hold the Challenger stationary but leaves the rear wheels free for a burnout to heat up and clean the rear tires.       Refocusing the Hellcat on its performance roots, the 2019 Challenger SRT Hellcat lineup features standard Houndstooth cloth performance seats.

      The Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack continues to offer the most muscle for the dollar in the segment with 485 horsepower and a starting U.S. Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) less than $40,000. Power comes from the proven, naturally aspirated, 392-cubic-inch HEMI V-8 engine’s best-in-class 485 horsepower and 475 lb.-ft. of torque.
       
      New for 2019, all Challenger R/T Scat Pack models get a new look, courtesy of the 2018 Challenger SRT Hellcat. The power-bulge aluminum hood features a dedicated air intake flanked by dual-air extractors to ensure effective removal of heat and reduced air turbulence in the engine compartment. Standard illuminated Air Catcher headlamps feed additional air directly into the engine bay.

For the driver looking to get even more out of the Challenger R/T model, the new Performance Plus Package adds track ready 20 x 9.5-inch forged wheels riding on 275/40ZR20 Pirelli P-Zero tires, limited-slip differential and enhanced handling balance for improved cornering performance.
