Alfa Romeo Delayed Giulia To Make Sure It Was 'Perfect' :Comments

Recommended Posts

We could count on both hands the number of stories we have written about the Alfa Romeo Giulia being delayed for one reason or another. But according to FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne, the reason for all of those various delays is to make sure it would be a true rival to models such as the BMW 3-Series.

"The project was technically immature. We will start only when we are on par with the Germans, otherwise it is not worth the effort," Marchionne told Automotive News.

We're not sure how much of this comment we can take as seriously considering the Giulia was supposed to originally come out in 2013. Let us look at the list of delays,

Alfa Romeo says that orders for the Giulia will open in April. The U.S. will see Giulia arrive this fall with the high-performance Quadrifoglio, followed by a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder towards the end of the year. We'll believe it when we see it.

:roflmao: Another Vaporware excuse while he continues to steal millions from the American name plate and pockets the cash in various ways and wastes it on pie in the sky dreams of bringing back dead name plates.

It's actually a hallmark of failed companies according to many of my textbooks - using cash cow divisions to fund the growth of other unprofitable divisions and mergers and acquisitions.

Let's just hope that this company isn't that kind of statistic in the future.

However, it's pretty clear that BMW has set the bar really low, if Cadillac can beat them, so can Alfa.

Though they really will have a tough time selling over the others - their pricing strategy is even more unpalatable than the Germans, and it's because they want to be a low volume, niche player.

All these niche brands will finally be undone when FCA US gets to use that same platform.

Though I am hesitant at that idea, because it would mean that the 300 and Charger would be really downsized back to a midsize RWD car size. But it might be the only way to get 5+ mpg combined gains in FE.

My guess is this will be a failed car sales wise.  However, it did run the Nurburgring in 7:39, that is a staggering time for a 4 door sedan.

a sort of pointless car from the USA perspective.  And who can guess how reliable it will be.

Well, they just have to beat BMW in performance, and also be given pity points for lack of back seat space because it's Italian, but of course when it's ripped to shreds by a Cadillac then the same excuse won't hold.

And the images of the Interior, while nice, looks nothing exciting over a Mercedes C300.

And then the XE has also beaten the 3 Series in comparison.

The Quadrifoglio looks pretty knarly. But again, is anyone buying an M or AMG going to go to them? Not really. Even V now has a pedigree and a following. Ditto for RS Quattro...

It has to make its own white space - aka mainstream performance luxury with Italian flavour. And it seems like a pretty long-term commitment, given they wanted 500,000 sales by 2020...or never, because it might just fail, spectacularly at that.

Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. In a statement issued to Bloomberg, GAC said “the escalation of China-U.S. trade frictions” and distribution “uncertainties” had made them decide to put their plans on hold. It's unclear how long this postponement will last, but it will likely be some months - maybe years.

FCA US Reports April 2019 Sales; Quarterly Reporting of Sales to Start in Q3

Jeep® Grand Cherokee and Jeep Compass post new April sales records Ram pickup notches best April ever as sales rise 25 percent Overall Ram brand sales reach new high     FCA US to report sales quarterly starting Oct. 1 May 1, 2019 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - FCA US LLC notched four U.S. sales records for April, highlighting consumer demand for the company’s brands despite continued softness within the industry.

FCA sold 172,900 vehicles in the month compared to 184,149 vehicles for the same period a year earlier. Retail sales accounted for 129,382 vehicles and fleet accounted for 25 percent of total sales. On a year-to-date basis, fleet accounted for 27 percent of total sales.

The Jeep® Compass and Jeep Grand Cherokee both reported April records as sales rose 10 percent and 23 percent, respectively. This was the second consecutive month Grand Cherokee set a record monthly high.

The Ram brand achieved its fourth consecutive month of record sales for the year, as April sales rose 25 percent to 53,811 vehicles. Ram pickup sales also had their second consecutive month of record sales with 49,106 vehicles sold.

"April marks the start of the spring selling season and we anticipate strong consumer spending as we move through May,” U.S Head of Sales Reid Bigland said. "The industry may be shaking off the first-quarter sluggishness, but shoppers are coming into showrooms and buying. We sold more than 300 Jeep Gladiators, which are now starting to arrive in showrooms across the country, and we expect our Gladiator count to continue to rise, reflecting both ongoing demand and the fulfillment of the 4,190 orders taken in early April for the 2020 Gladiator Launch Edition."

See the attached table for the breakdown of brand and nameplate sales.

FCA is paying Tesla hundreds of millions of dollar to pool their vehicles with Tesla to avoid EU fines over emissions. Tesla put out an invitation to other automakers to use its fleet to lower their emissions totals and FCA took them up on it.  Neither company released financial specifics of the deal, but it is estimated by the Financial Times to be worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
Similar to California which allows manufactures with a surplus of ZEV credits to sell them to manufacturers who need them, the EU Commission allows manufacturers to pool together their fleets to avoid paying fines. Tesla makes significant money selling these credits in the US, earning $103.4m in 2018 and $279.7m in 2017. Once set up, the pool in Europe is good for several years.
Vehicles in 2018 are allowed an average CO2 emission of 120.5g per kilometer. That figure will drop to 95g per kilometer next year.  FCA's average for 2018 was 123g per kilometer, one of the largest off the mark of the 13 major manufacturers. FCA is seen to have fallen to near the back of the pack when in comes to reigning in CO2 emissions.
FCA was forecast to be facing fines exceeding €2 billion ($2.25 billion) without pooling with Tesla.
