Ford News: Spying: 2018 Ford Fiesta Grows Up

The first spy shots of the next-generation Ford Fiesta have made their way onto the internet. The most apparent thing that the photos reveal is that the Fiesta will grow in size. According to Automotive News, the redesign will fix one of the major complaints of the current Fiesta - a cramped interior. It looks like certain elements of current Fiesta, such as the wide grille, will be retained.

 

Sources tell Automotive News that the next Fiesta (along with the 2018 Focus) will drop the Powershift dual-clutch transmission that has proven to be problematic. Expect three and four-cylinder engines to be on offer.

 

The 2018 Ford Fiesta is expected to arrive sometime in the middle of 2017.

I agree with FordCosworth, it has grown some, put on some bulk by the look of it.

 

Gotta wonder how the depressed sales of autos across the board will affect this car.

I don't think it's going to be on D6, so it's going to be a stretch and widen job.

 

Basic profile reminds me of a Hyundai Accent hatch, though this appears to be taller.

 

The grille has been widened but lowered in vertical height. 

 

Some of these compact hatchs are started to look so similar, and I think this Fiesta is going to lose some of the design highlights of the current generation.

For those who sadly cannot drive stick, the demise of the current automatic cannot come soon enough.  I'll be interested in seeing more of this, as I liked my '11 Fiesta for the few short munts I had it.

      If you need a distraction on this Monday, may we point you in the direction of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler Owner's Manual and User's Guide. JL Wrangler Forums discovered both books on a public FCA Canada website and has provided PDFs of both for your perusal. 
      Is there any new information that can be gleaned? Yes.
      There will be a power-retractable hardtop. However, the top is not removable. A 4WD Auto mode that will shift power between the front and rear axles when needed. UConnect system featuring pages for off-road settings Max towing capacity of 2,000 pounds for 2-door models, 3,500 pounds for 4-door models.  The manual mentions both the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and 3.6L V6, but doesn't mention power output. Thanks to an earlier leak, we know the 3.6 will produce 285 horsepower.

      Last week, Ford CEO Jim Hackett unveiled his plans for the company. One key part of his plan is moving $7 billion from the development of cars to trucks. What does this entail? Car and Driver have done a bit of digging and has brought forth some answers.
      Jim Farley, Ford’s president of global markets tells the magazine the company will focus on its regional strengths for future products. For the U.S., this means developing “authentic, off-road capable” vehicles according to him. That includes the upcoming EcoSport crossover, Ranger pickup, and Bronco SUV.
      Ford is planning to focus on utility vehicles in other markets as well as they have found success with “styled, on-road performance" crossovers. Europe will begin seeing models that are “urban-utility products.” For Asia (in particular China), Ford will focus on the "C-plus" larger midsize segment and three-row SUVs.
      As for cars, Farley said Ford will be repositioning products in certain markets to "lower-volume, higher-revenue sub-segments." For example, the Fiesta and Focus will become more upmarket.

      We've seen spy shots of the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette in the snow and at GM's proving grounds. Now, we have a set of spy shots of a mid-engine Corvette at a McDonalds' drive-thru.
      The pictures were captured by a Motor Trend reader in Cadillac, Michigan (northwest of Detroit). The test mule was undergoing some public road testing and it appears there was a current Corvette and what appears to be a Porsche 911. Despite the heavy amount of camouflage, you can make out some Corvette cues such as similar front-end styling as the current model and hood cutout. The double-bubble roof is present as is a set of new wheels that are presumed to be production ones.
      We'll find out what Chevrolet has in store sometime next year.
