Industry News: Hertz Makes Deals with Lyft and Uber

Yesterday, Hertz has announced that it reached partnership deals with both Uber and Lyft to provide vehicles to drivers. The deal will see Hertz proving drivers of the ride-sharing startups of vehicles that have been rotated out of their fleet. Drivers will get special rates on these vehicles. Hertz spokesman Bill Masterson says the rate for midsize vehicles will be $180 per week, including mileage and insurance.

 

Why is Hertz making deals with Lyft and Uber? You only need to go back earlier this year when the company said ride-sharing services was limiting growth. Hertz thinks that if you work with and not against, you might have a shot of succeeding.

 

“We consider this agreement to be largely complementary to our car-rental business, and it enables us to leverage our fleet and distribution infrastructure to participate in the dramatic growth in the ride sharing, or e-hailing, segment,” Hertz CEO John Tague said in a statement.

 

It should be noted that Hertz and Lyft have worked together before on a pilot program in Las Vegas and Denver, where drivers were offered a similar deal.

Hertz Global Holdings Reaches U.S. Supply Agreement with Lyft for Rental Cars

 

ESTERO, Fla., June 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: HTZ) has reached an agreement with Lyft to supply its U.S. drivers with cars under specified rental agreements, expanding upon two pilot markets where Hertz and Lyft have partnered together since November 2015. Built on the model used in pilots in Las Vegas and Denver, the agreement provides set rental rates for drivers, who will be serviced from dedicated off-airport Hertz locations that give on-site support. The cars can be used for both Lyft business and personal driving.

 

In addition to Las Vegas and Denver, Hertz will begin renting cars to Lyft drivers in Los Angeles and San Francisco with more markets expected to follow as part of the national agreement.

 

"This agreement builds on the work we've been doing with Lyft for the past eight months," said John Tague, president and chief executive officer of Hertz Global Holdings. "Based on that experience, Hertz and Lyft were ready to take the next step, which resulted in this U.S. supply agreement.

Hmmmm so they're basically providing Uber and Lyft with discounted and used vehicles. Or is it still a rental for the Uber/Lyft drivers? If that's the case, why would they spend 180/week = 774/month (180*4.3) on a rental when they could buy for way less than that? 

 

If they're selling them their used vehicles, it makes sense to me. If it's a form of rental program, I don't understand it.

I totally agree with you, this is a confusing announcement. Rental makes no sense unless the driver cannot get qualified for a purchase and rental is the only way to go.

Ive got many questions that seems that NOBODY wants to ask or answer...

 

1. Uber drivers...do they actually own their cars?

Because the way I read into things is that most Uber drivers dont even own the cars they drive....

So who is stuck doing the maintenance on them?

The rental agencies?

And when a whole bloody fleet of rental cars get too old, who gets stuck with the bill of replacing these cars?

Because if more and more Lyft and Uber drivers are more and more enticed to rent rather than use their own cars, without any government body being able to enforce usage of good working order vehicles to taxi people around because as we all know....Lyft and Uber is NOT a taxi service....

 

Yeah yeah...I know....we dont want Big Brother telling us when and how to maintain our vehicles...but I as a passenger in a Uber car, because renting will be expensive  as it seems nobody wants to repair and the renter renting the traditional way will fit the bill.....have a right NOT having the wheels fall off or the brakes failing while I use their service and as a USER of the road in MY OWN car ALSO has that right NOT TO BE KILLED by a Uber car failing due to NO SERVICE being made to the Uber car by slamming into me....

 

2. I wonder if all these idiot Uber drivers, the ones that actually use their own cars, ever calculate the REAL costs of wear and tear maintenance, because if they did, I dont think they would be Uber drivers...

 

3. Which begs the question?

Why is Uber allowed to circumvent the laws in place in which they are allowed to say they are NOT a taxi service...

 

All what this does is just pass the buck around for faulty maintenance done on vehicles meant to carry passengers as a business...that is why a Taxi license exists in the first place....it may be a tax grab to some eyes....but there are laws protecting the buying customer with the other drivers sharing the road....

 

Its funny....

People that have old cars are submitted to all kinds of examinations to ensure that their old beater is road worthy, authentic taxi cars too, yet Uber and Lyft cars....NADA....

 

And when a 2-3 year old Lyft/Uber car becomes too dilapidated and  Lyft/Uber change for another car and the process continues....who fits that bill?

Because there will be an over saturation  of cars at this point in time...over time....

So Lyft/Uber wont change cars?

So....a 6 year old Lyft/Uber car aint old by time, so the government wont be able to track the car to take it off the road, but by mileage....the thing will be a shytebox...so who will take care of that?

 

Long rant..I dont know if anybody understood it....I dont care really...

Alls I know is I HATE Uber and Lyft because they have fooled many with their circumventing....

 

NO! NO THEY DID NOT REINVENT HOW TO TAXI PEOPLE AROUND....THEY ARE CIRCUMVENTING THE LAWS!!!

 

WHAT...THE FANCY APPS IS WHAT THEY DID?

A MERE TELEPHONE CALL DOES THE SAME PHOKING THING!!!

ON THE SAME PHOKING DEVICE ONE USES THE APP, ONE COULD USE THE PHOKING PHONE!!!

AND TECHNICALLY,  IN PHONE MODE, ONE COULD SAY THEY ARE USING THE PHONE APP!!!

AND IF ONE OWNS A IPOD, ONE COULD ACTUALLY DOWNLOAD AN ACTUAL PHONE APP TOO!!!

      Volvo an Uber announced a deal where Uber will purchase 24,000 Volvo XC90 Plug-In Hybrid SUVs over 3 years to expand Uber's self-driving fleet. Uber has been testing self-driving vehicles in Pittsburgh since Autumn 2016 with human supervision in the driver seat.  Over 100 such vehicles are currently in operation in the city.
      The deal marks the largest single order of vehicles for Geely owned Volvo. While no financial details were disclosed, the minimum retail price for an XC90 T8 Hybrid is $64,950. Volvo expects the profit margin per vehicle to be on par with traditional sales through a dealership network.
      Uber chose the XC90 because much of the hardware to add autonomous capabilities is already built into the car.  Geely/Volvo engineers have been working closely with Uber to ensure that compatibility going forward.
      With a major shift in buying and driving habits coming in the future, Volvo is placing its chips on partnering with Uber to remain relevant in an industry ripe for disruption.

      There is a right way and a wrong way when it comes to testing autonomous vehicles on public roads. Uber has demonstrated the wrong way.
      Yesterday, the company launched eleven driverless Volvo XC90s in San Fransisco as part of a pilot program. But by late morning, two of the eleven vehicles were running amok. The San Fransisco Examiner got their hands on a dash cam video showing one of the XC90s running a red light at 10:37 A.M. Later that morning, a freelance producer and writer tweeted “Just passed a ‘self-driving’ Uber that lurched into the intersection on Van Ness [Avenue], on a red, nearly hitting my Lyft.”
      “It was close enough that both myself and the driver reacted and were like, ‘Shit. It stopped suddenly and stayed like that, as you see in the photo,” said Annie Gaus to the Examiner.
      Because of these incidents, the California Department of Motor Vehicles ordered Uber to halt the program.
      In a statement obtained by The Truth About Cars, Uber said the incident on video was due to human error and not the technology. 
      “This incident was due to human error. This is why we believe so much in making the roads safer by building self-driving Ubers. This vehicle was not part of the pilot and was not carrying customers. The driver involved has been suspended while we continue to investigate.”
      Not the most reassuring statement considering said vehicle looks like one from the pilot program. At the moment, Uber has drivers in the self-driving vehicles to control them in case of an issue.
      But there is a bigger problem at hand. Uber did not have the permit to legally have their autonomous vehicles on the road. A press release on Uber's Newsroom announcing the program said they didn't need one. Here are the paragraphs in question,
      "Finally, we understand that there is a debate over whether or not we need a testing permit to launch self-driving Ubers in San Francisco. We have looked at this issue carefully and we don’t believe we do. Before you think, “there they go again” let us take a moment to explain:
      First, we are not planning to operate any differently than in Pittsburgh, where our pilot has been running successfully for several months. Second, the rules apply to cars that can drive without someone controlling or monitoring them. For us, it’s still early days and our cars are not yet ready to drive without a person monitoring them."
      Unsurprisingly, the California DMV is not happy with Uber and threaten legal action if Uber did not halt the program and obtain the permit.
      “If Uber does not confirm immediately that it will stop its launch and seek a testing permit, the DMV will initiate legal action,” wrote DMV attorney Brian Soublet in a letter sent  Anthony Levandowski, who heads Uber’s autonomous car program.
      This isn't the first time Uber's autonomous program has found itself in hot water. Back in September, Quartz reported on the issues Uber was having with their autonomous program in Pittsburgh from a vehicle going the wrong way down a one-way street to a minor accident.

      You're a Volkswagen 2.0L TDI owner who decided to take the buy-back offer. You have a sizeable check in your pocket and decide to go looking for a new car. The folks at Hyundai and Volvo are hoping you buy one of their vehicles and are offering special deals to try and rope you in.
      CarsDirect has learned about the offers the two automakers are putting forward to former Volkswagen owners. Hyundai's offer is the Hyundai Circle V-Plan - think Ford's X plan pricing for friends and family. This plan takes 3 percent off the MSRP, plus $1,250 V-Plan cash and current incentives. You'll need to break out the calculator to figure how much you'll save, but it appears to be significant.
      As for Volvo, they are offering 5 years of complimentary "Safe + Secure Coverage" - this includes 5  years or 50,000 miles of warranty coverage, free scheduled maintenance, free roadside assistance, and wear and tear coverage for various components. There is also a $750 credit along with a 7-Year/100,000 Mile warranty with free roadside assistance if you go for a Certified Pre-Owned model. On the face of it, the Volvo isn't as generous as the Hyundai one. But Volvo has existing conquest incentives for Volkswagen and Audi owners that switch over. Case in point, the 2016 V60 has $4,500 sitting on the hood.
      To qualify for either deal, you'll need to present the Class Settlement letter (Hyundai) or proof of ownership and insurance (Volvo).
      Don't be surprised if you begin seeing other automakers offer something similar to draw former Volkswagen 2.0L TDI owners in the near future.

      Fiat Chrysler Automobiles surprised everyone last month when they announced a partnership with Google concerning autonomous vehicles. It seems that FCA wants to do something similar with another company.
       
      Bloomberg has learned from sources that FCA is currently in talks with Uber Technologies to strike a similar partnership concerning autonomous vehicles. At the moment, the talks between the two companies are at the preliminary stage. Unsurprisingly, both FCA and Uber declined to comment.
       
      Another source tells Bloomberg that Uber is in talks with other automakers. Not a big surprise as Uber already has announced a partnership with Toyota concerning the ride-service section of the business.
       
      Why would FCA be talking with Uber? FCA doesn't have the money/resources to develop their own technology. By partnering with various technology, this allows FCA to catch up in terms of autonomous tech.

      Only a few months after General Motors and Lyft formed an alliance, the two are planning to test a fleet of self-driving Chevrolet Bolt electric taxis on public roads.
       
      Specific details about the testing are still be working out, but a Lyft executive said it will include customers in an undisclosed city. Customers will be able to opt in or out of the program when hailing a Lyft cab from the company's application. Riders will be able to contact an advisor from OnStar to ask questions or provide help if a problem arises.
       
      The self-driving tech will come from Cruise Automation Inc., a developer of autonomous driving tech that was acquired back in March.
       
      “We will want to vet the autonomous tech between Cruise, GM and ourselves and slowly introduce this into markets,” said Taggart Matthiesen, Lyft’s product director. That will “ensure that cities would have full understanding of what we are trying to do here.”
       
      There are still a number of regulation hurdles Lyft has to work out. In an effort to remove some of the hurdles, Lyft will still have drivers in the vehicles to intervene. But the end goal is to remove the driver. The testing is expected to begin within a year.
