Industry News: Geely Introduces Lynk & Co, Coming to the U.S. In 2018

Recommended Posts

Chinese automaker Geely has introduced a new global brand, Lynk & Co., and their first model, an SUV developed alongside with Volvo in Berlin tonight. Geely's hopes for this new brand is to "disrupt the automobile industry and redesign the process of buying, owning and using a car".

The SUV called the 01 looks like a Porsche Cayenne up front and possibly Volvo along the side. Power will come from a hybrid system comprised of a 1.5L three-cylinder engine and electric motor. Other engines options will be announced at a later time. Transmissions include a manual and dual-clutch automatic. The 01 uses Volvo's CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform - something we'll be seeing in the near future with Volvo's upcoming 40-Series.

But the big story with Lynk & Co isn't the 01, it is everything around it. First, Lynk & Co will sell their vehicles either online or at select store locations. A small number of trims will be offered for each to model to help keep costs down. Prices will be fixed in all markets and buyers will have their new vehicle delivered to their home. If servicing needs to take place, Lynk & Co will pick up the vehicle.

Second, Lynk owners can make money by sharing their vehicle. A share button in the infotainment system allows an owner to grant a shared key to others to drive the vehicle. Third, Lynk is giving developers an open application programming interface to develop in-car applications. Lynk says the likes of Microsoft, Ericsson, and Alibaba are helping out with building the infrastructure needed for this.

Geely plans on launching Lynk & Co next year in China, with Europe and the U.S. following in 2018. There will be more models down the line (02, 03, etc) such as a sedan.

i'm very excited to see how the sales model pans out, as well as the 'sharing' functionality. i'd love to see cars be further redefined into a more communal, 'shareable' commodity.

the powertrain sounds interesting, especially with a manual option. less interesting is the design which seems a mishmash of KIA, SAAB and Nissan Juke, but it's not offensive either.

Sorry but if that is what is being brought here, then it should come with a fifth of bourbon for being so hideous looking. It is a hodge dodge of everything that the Chinese like to rip off.

I haven't read that Chinese auto mfg's have to set up joint ventures here in NA. You know, like the laws stipulate foreign auto companies must do in China.

When Beijing allowed foreign carmakers to set up shop in China in early 1980s, it wanted to make sure they didn’t kill off the nascent domestic industry. Foreign companies were required to enter into joint ventures with local manufacturers and to share technology with them. Each foreign carmaker is allowed to partner with up to two local groups in joint ventures.

I will give them $25 for it.  And no way am I sharing a car with anyone.  People have nasty, dirty, criminal habits and I want no part of that.  The idea of a "communal car" is a huge turn-off.

1) Car is but ugly. :puke:

2) Hate the idea of communal car sharing, most people that do that are nasty dirty and I would never use a car2go or zip as they are just a mess inside. The people clearly car less since it is not really their car. Even with a co-sharing where the other person pays money to share a car, most will see it as a disposable auto. NASTY NASTY NASTY

3) Apps system, great another way for hackers to take over your auto, mess it up or worse, big brother watches you and decides they need to take out someone so they cause you to crash. No Thanks

4) Agree with Ocnblu, worth $25 buck of them paying me to drive this so called auto.

Monday saw a major bombshell report come out stating that multiple Chinese automakers were considering buying Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. In fact, a well-known automaker put out a bid earlier this month, which was subsequently turned down. Today, one of the Chinese automakers rumored to buy FCA said they did place an offer on the table.
According to Reuters, Geely Automobile’s executive director Gui Shengyue rebutted claims that his company was the one to place the bid.
"We don't have such plan at the moment," said Shengyue.
He would go on to say that "a foreign acquisition would be complicated," but did not elaborate. Sources tell the news service some of the complications would deal with the current political climate in the U.S. and regulations.
Geely and FCA held initial talks late last year according to a source, without going into detail what the talks dealt with. The source goes on to say that Geely is no longer interested in FCA, noting that the company had purchased a significant stake into Malaysian automaker Proton a few months ago.
That possibly leaves three automakers that we know of in the running - Dongfeng, Great Wall, and Guangzhou.

Last October, Chinese automaker Geely unveiled a new global brand called Lynk & Co. This brand stood out in a few ways,
Vehicles will be sold online Owners will be able to share their Lynk & Co vehicles to make some money An open application programming interface to develop in-car applications Recently announcing all of their vehicles would come with lifetime warranties The plan was for the brand to launch in China this year, with Europe and U.S. following in late 2018. But a new report from Automotive News says the launch for Europe and U.S. has been pushed back to 2019.
“We think we will start in Europe between the first quarter and the first half of 2019 and enter the U.S. some months later,” said Alain Visser, Lynk & Co's senior vice president of marketing and sales.
The reason for pushback comes down to Lynk & Co needing more time to establish a company-owned dealership network as it is taking slightly longer to find the locations. Visser said the company wants to build up a network of 500 dealers comprising of flagship and temporary pop-up stores. Despite having stores, vehicles will be sold online and delivered to the owner's house or office.
Visser said plans for the Chinese launch is still on schedule with the 01 crossover launching towards the end of the year.

It seemed this day would never come, but the Fisker Karma has risen from the ashes to become the Karma Revero. Thanks to Chinese supplier Wanxiang buying the assets of Fisker Automaker back in 2014, the company would be renamed to Karma Automotive and work would begin on the resurrection.
There aren't any real changes of note for the exterior aside from new badging and the 'Revero' name on the fenders. The interior does see a big change with a new infotainment system. The new system runs at 60 frames per second, can be updated over-the-air thanks to a dedicated 4G connection, and will feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support in the near future.
The powertrain is still a plug-in hybrid with a GM-sourced turbocharged four-cylinder producing 260 horsepower. At least the rest of it has seen some major changes. The battery capacity has been increased from 20.4 to 21.4 kWh that will give 50 miles of electric only range. The 3.3kW on-board charger has been swapped for a 6.6 kW to provide faster charges. The Revero also features the ability to use DC fast-charging at 40 kW. A solar roof on top can provide up to 1.5 miles of electric range per day - depending on weather conditions.
Pricing for the Revero begins at $130,000 (about $27,000 more than the Karma) and you can place an order right now.

Karma Automotive Unveils 2017 Revero Luxury Vehicle

COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 8,2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Karma Automotive officially unveiled the 2017 Revero luxury hybrid automobile to a select group of customers, media and retailers at a private event in Laguna Beach, CA.  Orders are now being accepted for the much-anticipated, and stylishly appointed Revero.  The list price of $130,000 was announced at the unveiling.
Originally hailed as one of the most beautiful vehicles ever conceived, these one-of-a-kind cars embody the sensibilities of a passionate, charismatic, California-based company.  The car is being built in an all new custom, low-volume production facility in Moreno Valley, California.
"The car unveiled tonight was designed with a specific customer in mind.  Karma customers are self-made, proud, risk-takers who love cars, and they can tell you about each one they have owned since childhood," said Jim Taylor, Karma Chief Revenue Officer.  "We are building each Revero with the workmanship and attention to detail required for a discerning customer looking for a car without compromises."
The Revero includes several features that set it apart.  A clean and elegant infotainment system has been designed from the ground up to be fast and intuitive, and will incorporate over-the-air updates as well as Apple CarPlay.  It will be the first car sold in the U.S. powered by electricity, gas and solar.  The solar roof not only charges the 12V battery, but also charges the HV battery adding to the electric range.  Individually hand-painted emblems grace the front and rear of every vehicle.  It is a small but symbolic statement about the company's desire to give each owner a unique vehicle.
The Revero is quick, going from 0-60 in 5.4 seconds in Sport mode.  Owners can plug in for a battery range up to 50 miles and the gas-powered generator extends the total range to approximately 300 miles.  Fast-Charging brings the HV battery to 80 percent state-of-charge in a remarkable 24 minutes.

A number of German automakers are recalling a number of diesel vehicles to tweak the engine management software to produce less nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Reuters reports that Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche, and Volkswagen have agreed to recall 630,000 diesel vehicles to tweak engine management software.

The software in question can turn off emission treatment systems to improve engine performance and increase the services interval. Is it legal? Yes, thanks to a legal loophole that allows automakers to throttle back emission treatment systems in certain situations to protect engines. This was discovered in various European emission tests.

In light of the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal, environmental groups and regulators aren't too pleased with automakers using this loophole. In fact, the German motor transport authority (KBA) has questioned whether this loophole could be fully justified.
