Motorweek Retro Review: 1991 Pontiac Trans Am Convertible

Recommended Posts

Brings me back to my adolescent years.

I owned a red 1989 Firebird with the 2.8 liter V6 Automatic. T-Tops.

Bought it from a friend in the summer of 1993.

I was dreaming of owning these Firebird Trans Ams at the time when I bought mine from my friend:

1989 Turbo Trans Am.

And the regular GTA 5.7 liter V8. In red of course with those gold BBS mags and the gold logos and trims.

and of course the convertible

And in 1993, the 4rth gen arrived...and I wanted one. Formula V8 or Trans Am. Preferably the Trans Am

I was even thinking about making it into a notchback that Pontiac did sell in 1986 or 1987. Or was it 1985?

Another buddy of mine had  "connections" to which this connection had access to this notchback kit and he would perform the "conversion".

Notchback was 1988.  Loved the look, there was one in my town that I'd drool over. I was in my mid-teens in the early '90s and wanted a '91 or '92 Trans Am GTA in the dark green with tan leather. I even rode my bike to the local Pontiac dealer in spring '91 just in time to see a new '91 T/A GTA come off a carrier. A salesman offered me the '91 brochure of the Firebird lineup that opened up to a full color mini poster of the dark green GTA. I still have that brochure all these years later ;)

1988...I would have never remembered that.

The notchback was awesome.

Let us not forget the digital dash the Trans Ams had. I LOVED those too.
