Ford News: 2018 Ford Mustang Loses V6, Gains 10-Speed Automatic

Recommended Posts

Ford has revealed the updated 2018 Mustang which appears to amp up the competition between it and the Chevrolet Camaro.

The exterior comes with a new front fascia with a larger grille, reshaped headlights, and lowered hoodline. Around back are a revised design for the taillights and quad-exhausts for the GT. The interior boasts higher quality materials and the option of a 12.3-inch digital cluster that can be customized to provide performance data.

The big changes though lie under the skin. For starters, the base 3.7L V6 has been dropped. The 2.3L EcoBoost will now take its place as the base engine. Ford says the 2.3 will see a bump in torque, though the blue oval isn't saying how much. The 5.0L V8 gets a higher compression ratio and port fuel injection to join alongside the direct injection. Again, Ford is keeping quiet on power figures. Both engines can be equipped with a brand new 10-speed automatic transmission that was jointly developed with GM. V8 models equipped with the six-speed manual get a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel that is said to provide smoother gear changes.

Ford has also messed around with the Mustang's chassis. The suspension boasts revised shocks and stabilizer bars; stiffer setup for the rear, and new sway bars. Opt for the Performance Package and you'll get the option of MagneRide.

Ford says the 2018 Mustang will arrive at dealers this fall. Expect to hear pricing before then.

NEW FORD MUSTANG OFFERS SLEEKER DESIGN, MORE ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY AND IMPROVED PERFORMANCE

  • Sleeker design: New Mustang features a more athletic look, with new front and rear-end design that deliver a leaner and meaner look and refined aerodynamics
  • More advanced technology: New Mustang technologies include a 12-inch all-digital instrument cluster that you can customize your way, MyMode with memory function that remembers your driving preferences for the next time you drive, and new driver-assist features such as Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection for increased confidence behind the wheel
  • Improved Performance: Powerful engine upgrades, plus an all-new available 10-speed automatic transmission give Mustang even more performance, while available MagneRide™ suspension offers optimum handling; optional active valve exhaust affords complete auditory control – let the engine roar, or not

LOS ANGELES, Calif., Jan. 17, 2017 – Today, Ford partnered with its ambassador of Service, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, to introduce the new Mustang – the world’s best-selling sports coupe and the company’s most advanced Mustang ever.

A host of improvements including new technology and design changes give owners ways to customize Mustang to their preferences, even better performance from more powerful engines and new MagneRide™ suspension technology. Customers have more ways than ever to personalize Mustang to make it their own, with three new paint colors, 12 distinct wheel choices and a customizable digital instrument cluster.

“The new Mustang is our best ever, based on more than 50 years as one of the iconic sports car in America and now, the world,” said Joe Hinrichs, president of The Americas. “Tapping Mustang’s enormous fan base, we’re bringing the new Mustang straight to the people – and introducing the new car across multiple social media channels, reaching millions.”

Ford tapped Johnson to reveal the new Mustang to the world by giving one of the first models available to a deserving member of the military. A video of the debut was launched on Johnson’s social channels, including Youtube, Instagram and Facebook, where Mustang holds the title for the most-popular car with more than 8.4 million ‘likes.’

Technology for greater personalization
Mustang makes available Ford’s first 12-inch all-digital LCD screen in the dashboard. This all-new customizable instrument cluster can be easily personalized, offering three separate views. Customers can personalize the displays for normal, sport and track mode. All-new Mustang MyMode with memory function allows customers to save their favorite drive settings, including suspension and steering preferences.

The new Mustang is so customizable that even its engine note can be adjusted. Delivering an audible experience like never before, an all-new active valve exhaust system is optional on Mustang GT, with a fully variable soundtrack to match the entire acceleration range.

For the first time, Mustang benefits from a vast array of Ford driver-assist technology. Customers can feel more confident than ever behind the wheel with new features like Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and Driver Alert System.

Ford SYNC® Connect with FordPass™ is available on Mustang for the first time. When using the FordPass® app for smartphones, drivers can start, lock, unlock and locate their car for ultimate convenience.

Ultimate performance
Performance is at the core of Mustang DNA, offering drivers a unique thrill of acceleration and cornering for the ultimate fun-to-drive experience. On all models, new shock absorbers make for better ride control, a new cross-axis joint in the rear suspension leads to increased lateral stiffness, and innovative stabilizer bars bring sharper response and handling.

MagneRide damper technology is a new option with the Mustang Performance Package to optimize ride and handling in all situations.

The proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine continues to offer outstanding performance advantages versus the outgoing 3.7-liter V6. Using Ford’s transient overboost technology uniquely calibrated for Mustang, torque is increased for wide-open throttle acceleration.

Ford’s legendary 5.0-liter V8 engine has been thoroughly reworked. It is more powerful and revs higher than any Mustang GT before. This power increase was achieved with the first application for Mustang of Ford’s new dual-fuel, high-pressure direct injection and low-pressure port fuel injection on a V8 engine – delivering robust low-end torque, high-rpm power, and improved fuel efficiency.

The manual transmission for both engine options has been upgraded for optimal torque. For the V8, the manual transmission has been totally redesigned to include a twin-disc clutch and dual-mass flywheel to increase torque capability and deliver more efficient clutch modulation.

A new 10-speed automatic transmission, available with both EcoBoost and V8 engines, is the best automatic Mustang has ever offered. With a wide-ratio span and optimized gear spacing, this all-new gearbox helps deliver higher average power for acceleration – improving responsiveness and performance.

Compared to the previous six-speed, the new 10-speed transmission has quicker shift times, better low-speed tip-in response and significantly reduced friction losses. The all-new electronic control system includes unique tunes for different drive modes and features real-time adaptive shift scheduling to ensure the right gear at the right time. Steering wheel-mounted shift paddles allow drivers maximum manual control.

Energy in the design
Overall, the car’s exterior design is now more athletic, with a lower, remodeled hood and grille that deliver a leaner look and refined aerodynamics, upper and lower front grilles, and a new position for hood vents. For the first time the entire Mustang line will feature all-LED front lights including signature lighting, low-beams, turn signals, efficient projector high-beams and available fog lamps.

The rear of the car gets revised LED taillamps for a more technical look, plus a new bumper, fascia and available performance spoiler. Dual-tip exhaust is standard for EcoBoost® Mustang, while V8-powered Mustang GT gets a standard quad-tip exhaust.

With a dozen available alloy wheel designs and fresh exterior color choices – including all-new signature Orange Fury – enthusiasts can order a Mustang with the look they’re after.

Improved touch points and visual cues with a more premium look and feel characterize the new cockpit. The center console adds a new hand-stitched wrap with contrast stitching and padded knee bolsters while door handles, rings and bezels are finished in aluminum. Restyled seating surfaces feature new patterns and color choices, the instrument panel sports an updated Mustang badge and there’s a new key fob design. A heated steering wheel is optional.

Ford’s most advanced Mustang ever goes on sale in North America this fall.

Looks weird.. like its nose is droopy. Sometimes I have to ask why manufacturers eff with decent designs. Like the Rear end of both the Challenger and previous gen Camaro 5.. they should have just left them alone. The Camaro, for instance, had its quad tail-lights replaced in 2014. And while the front got better.. the rear looked weak. This looks to be the same. There was nothing wrong with it in the first place. Why did they change?

The powertrain updates are interesting, but what interests me most is the manual transmission changes.  I was always just "eh" about the Mustang with the manual. It drove fine, but wasn't up to current standards. I found the shifter to be a bit clumsy and not the nice action like in the BR-Z or Miata... or even the Fusion.  So the updates described here sound very compelling and I'll be interested in trying it out.

Agreed...they seem to be trying something different here...

Nor surprised about the V6 though...

Nice interior upgrades and it's no surprise that the V6 is getting dropped but those headlights look like they were snatched off of a Dodge Dart and I can't see it any other way. The 10 speed was expected but a nice upgrade as well.

Good call on the Dart headlights, I was first thinking the front fenders and lights had a bit of a Mazda look, but the headlights are very Dart like.

Makes sense to drop the V6, it is a dated engine, the 3.5 ecoboost could replace the 5.0 V8 and the car would be faster.

I was going to say it was like Mazda but the Dart predates Mazda (6 or Miata) in this case.

The gray side view looks better than the yellow front 3/4 photos I saw elsewhere today.   Not sure if the styling changes are an improvement, though..

RE: NOT MEANT TO BE A HARSH JOKE, JUST SOME BANTER.

The difference is that the Dart died and the Mustang didn't. It's okay to steal from the dearly departed, right?

Some angles it works, some angles, ehhhh, and I already had those moments with the current Mustang head-on anyways. To me, this design is no better no worse. Plus the ass-end got better, and that's uhhh, you know, what do they call those things? Ah, yes, personal preference...

I find the most interesting/weird detail thing, is that the headlights seems to have eyelashes around the convex lens... hmmmm.

Okay, need some deets on this Suburban of yours.. in order to smoke a modern Camaro/Mustang it would have to be putting down..450ish RWHP?

Actually, I think I have warmed up to the design quite a bit more. Only because the one angle of the current Mustang that are not Ford Performance Variants...(I still think Ford should have called it Ford PerFORDmance, but I guess I have a stupid sense of humour) that I didn't quite like was the head-on look with your eyes level with the middle of the grille. It just seemed too retro and incoherent with the rest.....and this doesn't look retro, but it has the same vibes of being incoherent with some other parts.

I like the new available paint job, the wheels look on point, and DAMN GOOD, the kept Magnetic or is it Guard. Plus, ass-end looks better to me, so yeah, I'd say as a refresh....they didn't really make the design any better, but standard LED's sure is nice even on the base EB, but they didn't make it worse either overall to me atleast.

The V6, cyclone , dearly departed, the Mustang loses it for 2018, but why does Lincoln keep that motor still! Get it out and make the the luxury class capable 2.7 standard on every Lincoln. Dammit, now that's a motor that can take on the Germans and the premier Asian marques.

And I also think they should have put a 2.7 in here to, I just don't understand, I guess they don't want too much variants, but this same engine is shipped to Flat Rock anyways for the Fusion and the Conti....

This thing is going to look awful in person, I feel like.

Maybe.. maybe it will grown on us. My father saw it and was like "why did they make the Mustang look like the Focus in the front?"

Either way.. I truly hope these new 10 speeds coming from Ford and GM.. not to mention the 9 speeds actually yield some real fuel economy gains.. otherwise... what the was the damn point?

Try 505HP 551 lbs-ft of Torque. I pulled the 350, bore it out to a 402. Had it built by a guy in Renton WA that builds Nascar Race engines. :D

Taught my son how to do burnouts in the Suburban and now it is a tradition that as the wheels become ready for replacements, my son and I enjoy some quality Rubber Burning fun! :P

Love the Humor, have to disagree with you on the motor. I think to keep the Mustang and Camero alive, both Ford and GM are going to have to have some distinct motors for these auto's that are very different from the more common family auto (Fusion) or the Luxury auto (Conti).

More and more I think the auto companies need to have distinct differences. This includes you can use the core motor but it needs to be night and day different from other products.

Yes, I can understand the MPG desire, but if the tranny is silky smooth but maintains MPG or slight improvement, I am ok with that also. I really want the Tranny's to be silky smooth and solid. If you have 9 or 10 gears, they the auto should smoothly move like a Hot Knife through butter.

Great technology, an auto many love.

With that said, the picture of the Silver Mustang Convertible reminds me of someone having sat on the toilet and pinched a load.

Sorry FordsCosworth, but the picture does not do the car justice as it looks like it was squeezed out and pinched off at the front.

LOL I think it looks GREAT in that silver picture and I'm not a convertible fan. I think a lot of it is just the picture/editing that went into it. I mean I like the '18 Mustang but that pic looks freakin great to me.

Now if only they could break the news that it lost 100-200lbs.

Last week, Ford unveiled the Raptor Ranger. The bad news as we reported was the model wasn't going to come here, but a tweet from Ford's North America Product Communications manager gave some hope that possibly, a smaller Raptor could come.
More fuel has been added to this fire via some comments made by the chief engineer for Ford Performance, Jamal Hameedi. Speaking with Australian outlet Drive, Hameedi said the truck "would do really well in the states."
“I think it’s certainly like it’s a baby Raptor, it depends what you’re looking for. There are a lot of people that just want that size in a pickup truck and they don’t want anything larger,” said Hameedi.
Hameedi went on to say that the diesel engine found in the Ranger Raptor would likely be swapped for a gas engine.
“I think most American off-roaders would actually prefer a petrol gas engine, but a diesel is the absolute way to go for the rest of the world.”
We think a version of Ford's 2.3 EcoBoost could be the engine of choice for a U.S. variant.
But it will likely be a while before a final decision is made on the Ranger Raptor coming to the U.S.
“We haven’t said anything about availability in the US, our first priority is to get a Raptor available to everyone on the planet earth. So Americans already have an F-150 Raptor, we’ve got to spread Raptors to the rest of the planet,” said Hameedi.

The redesigned Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator have been moving quite rapidly off dealer lots. In January, sales of the Expedition rose 59 percent while the Navigator saw a jaw-dropping 132 percent increase. But this is proving to be a problem for Ford as their dealers can't get enough of either model to satisfy consumer demand. A source told Automotive News that CEO Jim Hackett has banned Ford employees from ordering Expeditions and Navigators to help get more out into the world. The source said restricting employees from ordering a mainstream vehicle is very rare.
"We could have sold a lot more in January if we had them," said Mark LaNeve, Ford's vice president for U.S. marketing, sales and service during Ford's monthly sales call earlier this month.
Ford will be addressing this issue with a $25 million investment into their Kentucky Truck Plant today. The investment will allow the plant to produce 25 percent more Expedition and Navigator models.
"It's important for this plant to produce more vehicles. In this segment, people will pay for a great product. The dealer feedback has been even stronger than we've hoped for," said Joe Hinrichs, Ford's president of global markets.

FORD INCREASING PRODUCTION OF ALL-NEW LINCOLN NAVIGATOR, FORD EXPEDITION TO MEET GREATER-THAN-ANTICIPATED CUSTOMER DEMAND
Ford is increasing production of two entirely new SUVs – the Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition – to meet surging customer demand A new $25 million investment brings Ford’s total investment at Kentucky Truck Plant to $925 million and allows the company to increase manufacturing line speed; company has boosted production targets for full-size SUVs approximately 25 percent since fall This additional investment and advanced manufacturing upgrades all help the company improve its operational fitness. Upgrades include 400 new robots, enhanced data analytics to help the plant operate more efficiently and a new 3D printer that enables workers to make parts and tools more quickly and cheaper LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 12, 2018 – Ford is increasing production of two popular full-size SUVs to meet surging demand for both all-new models.
The company is using advanced manufacturing technologies and an upskilled workforce to increase line speed at its Kentucky Truck Plant to build even more Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, boosting production targets approximately 25 percent since last fall when the SUVs hit the market.
“The response from customers regarding our new full-size SUVs has been exceptional,” said Joe Hinrichs, president, Global Operations. “Using a combination of Ford’s advanced manufacturing and American hard work and ingenuity, we’ll deliver more high-quality Lincoln Navigators and Ford Expeditions to customers than originally planned.”
A new $25 million investment for additional manufacturing enhancements brings Ford’s total investment at Kentucky Truck Plant to $925 million and allows the company to increase manufacturing line speed.
This investment and advanced manufacturing upgrades are examples of the company’s quest to improve its operational fitness. Upgrades include 400 new robots, a new 3D printer that enables workers to make parts and tools more quickly and cheaper as well as enhanced data analytics to keep the assembly line moving as efficiently as possible.
      Surging customer demand
Lincoln dealers simply can’t keep the entirely new Navigator on dealer lots; the luxury SUVs are spending an average of just seven days at the dealership before they are sold.
Customers are trading in Land Rover and Mercedes vehicles in exchange for a Navigator, and nearly 85 percent of all Navigator buyers are choosing high-end Black Label and Reserve models.
Customer demand for the highly-equipped Black Label and Reserve series contributed to an average transaction price increase of more than $21,000 in January versus a year ago. Navigator retail sales were up triple digits in every region of the country last month. Navigator sales more than doubled last month, thanks to growth in key markets including Florida, Texas and California, a competitive conquest rate of 40 percent and new interest from younger consumers.
Expedition also is off to a strong start, with the top-of-the-line Platinum trim models representing 29 percent of sales – pushing transaction price increases up $7,800 in January. Expedition retail sales were up nearly 57 percent last month and vehicles are spending just seven days on dealer lots.
To ensure customers can get vehicles as quickly as possible, Kentucky Truck Plant assembly line workers are working overtime and voluntary weekend shifts.
