Ford News: Spying: Plug-In Hybrid Arrives for the Ford F-150

Earlier this month, Ford CEO Mark Fields dropped some big bombshells concerning the company. One of those was a hybrid version of the F-150 for 2020. A spy photographer has given us our first look at what Ford has in mind for this.

The F-150 mule caught in pictures only has the front covered up. But it appears the truck is a plug-hybrid. This conclusion is due to flaps that aren't hidden so well. One of these likely has the door hiding the socket to plug in the truck. The photographer who took the photos reports the mule had a slightly narrow front track and sounded like it had a four-cylinder under the hood. Motor1 isn't sure about this considering Mark Fields said the model "will offer powerful towing and payload capacity and operate as a mobile generator.” Achieving this with a four-cylinder could be tough unless Ford is planning to have a big battery pack and electric motors to do it. Over at Trucks.com, they think the F-150 plug-in hybrid could use the 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder found in the Mustang as it delivers 310 horsepower and 320 pound-feet of torque - giving it the necessary power to pull off Field's claim.

Not sure how well this will do.

It has to be a big difference in MPG to get many buyers to move from normal ICE engines.

Also most of these people are not tree huggers. Selling them a Plug in truck is like selling a Chain Saw to an environmentalist. One has to remember most truck buyers are not worried about MPG and will miss rolling coal.

Ford I suspect may try to push these in their fleet sales if they can price it right as a cost savings vehicle. It also will give them a large test fleet. I can see city governments doing this.

I agree with Hyperv6, I see this as a truck for the Gov agencies and not much of a sell to the public. If they had a mid size or true compact EV truck, that would go over big for the Cities and City dwellers.

I just don't see much in the public till they are cheaper or hold some advantage worth paying more for. 

Truck people are not tech creatures. 

Now Auto Zone may replace the Sonic with a small Plug in Colorado standard cab base model.

My thinking is you can already have a 300 mile EV truck and with a mini or mid size, true city folks that want a truck for runs to Home Depot and city gov will want this as a very clean quiet work vehicle / weekend project truck.

Think 2 person BOLT with a bed.

City people are not truck people.

They buy a Forester and borrow the father in laws truck from the suburbs. Or they pay delivery.

I see it daily.

Their best hope is fleets if they keep the price down.

Real truck people want it 

loud and dirty.

if you knew how many Corsa and Borlas I move just for trucks alone it is staggering. 

When they paint Mud Militia on the truck they are not worried about saving the planet.

True local large off road club.

Two person Bolt with a bed is such an ugly image, it'll never sell, despite how practical....or a mechanism for cost of operating savings.

      Many people were hoping that Ford would bring the new Raptor Ranger to the U.S. It would offer the off-road performance and capability of the larger F-150 Raptor, but in a smaller and (hopefully) more affordable package. But that isn't going to be happening. Hermann Salenbauch, the vehicle line director for Ford Performance told journalists yesterday that the company has no plans to bring the Ranger Raptor to the U.S.
      A key reason mentioned by Salenbauch is due to the high costs to make the Ranger Raptor legal to sell in the U.S. as the model is based on the global Ranger. We have to assume a key part would come from trying to either make the twin-turbo 2.0L diesel legal or finding a possible replacement.
      But Autoblog notes there is another reason not mentioned by Salenbauch, pricing. Considering the base price of the F-150 Raptor is $52,855, we would guess the Ranger Raptor would be a few thousand dollars less taking into account the various changes that would be needed. For a number of buyers, spending a few extra thousand dollars to get a bigger and badder truck isn't that big of a problem. Plus, Ford is making a nice amount of profit on each Raptor sold - especially considering that Raptors sit on dealer lots for an average of 20 days. Why introduce a competitor that would make less money?
      That isn't to say Ford isn't taking the Raptor Ranger off the table for the U.S. fully. Autoblog writes that "Salenbauch didn't say the Ranger Raptor would never come here, and he and other Ford executives said they're always listening to feedback and open to new models."

      Seems Ford and VW are talking about cooperation in building auto's that are the cornerstone of each company for each other to expand global sales. Seems Trucks / SUVs from Ford to VW and Cars from VW to Ford. Analysts say there is more than just building auto's for each other that a buy out of one by the other or a merge could take VW from #1 in the world to #1 plus alotta space from #2.
      Analysts are dumbfounded as to why Ford is not moving forward faster as they all see a big turn down coming in the auto industry. To quote the story:
      “Ford can screw around with management layer reductions in North America and partnership in the other three regions instead of being acquired, in a desperate attempt to remain independent, but concurrently, the next auto downturn is coming," said Gabrielsen, an Ann Arbor native who is based in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico. He travels frequently to Detroit, Chicago and Atlanta to meet with clients, primarily U.S.-based global companies. 
      "It is just a question of how soon. But, at the pace they are moving, the downturn will hit before they are done restructuring," he said. "A VW-Ford combination would be the undisputed largest automaker in the world, leaving the (now) near-tie with Toyota in the dust."

      Gabrielsen noted that in 2017:
      Ford had 13.9 percent of the market share versus 4.5 percent for VW in North America. VW had 10.6 percent of the market share versus 8.9 percent for Ford in South America VW had 10 percent of the market share versus 3.4 percent for Ford in Asia Pacific. VW had 17 percent of the market share versus 7.5 percent for Ford in Europe.

      When Ford introduced the GT, they made it very clear it would be a limited run affair. 500 models would be built over the course of two years. Then the company expanded the amount to 1,000 vehicles that would be built over four years. Now, Ford has expanded the pool of GTs again.
      An additional 350 GTs will be built, bringing the grand total to 1,350. This also means a longer production run. Previously, Ford was going to wrap up production in 2020, but has pushed it back to 2022. If you were one of the many people who applied for a GT and didn't get one, Ford will be opening the application process one more time beginning on November 8th and have it running for 30 days. Prospective owners will find out if they got the approval early next year.
      “By extending the Ford GT production run for a limited period, we’re able to maintain the exclusivity of the ultra-desirable supercar while offering the ownership experience to a greater number of customers,” said Hermann Salenbauch, Ford Performance director.
      Somehow, we doubt many Ford GT owners will have the same view.
