BMW News: BMW Quietly Ended Production of 6-Series Coupe, Doesn't Tell Anyone

Usually, an automaker will announce they are ending production of a certain model. BMW didn't do that when it stopped production of the 6-Series coupe back in February.

Road & Track got confirmation about this change from a BMW spokesperson. No reason was given as to why production of the coupe ended, but it is a safe bet that low sales played a role in this decision.

This only adds fuel to the fire about reports that BMW is working on an 8-Series coupe. Our last report back in October said the company was planning to launch the 8-Series in late 2018 with the coupe. A convertible and V12 would follow sometime thereafter. Because of this, the 6-Series coupe and convertible would not be replaced.

More sales for the E-class coupe.  BMW might as well can the 8-series now, no one is going to buy that, even though I liked the 90s 850csi.

Wait... so BMW, hoping no one will notice, kills the buyerless 6-series... but is said to be working on a HIGHER PRICED replacement???

How come "journalists" never question the business case insanity of such a move, instead of implying with "fuel to the fire" that's there's a clamoring mass of buyers for such a car?

Well they still have the 6-series sedan, errr Grand Coupe, which has a higher base price than a 7-series I think, it used to, which made no sense.  Journalists are probably hoping for some sort of M860i with a 600 hp V12, but if Mercedes questions whether the S-class coupe will have enough buyers to survive, no way a BMW version will find enough.

BMW just said a week or two ago that they would not jump into the hyper car game because even though their engineers would love to, they don't have the resources or money to do it.  So makes you wonder why jump into an 8-series?  That ties up resources and money as well for a slow seller.   And at a time when the 3-series is losing sales fast, and the market wants SUVs.  Hell make an X8 crossover coupe, as stupid as that sounds it would outsell any $100k coupe they come up with.

The 12 people buying the 6-series 2 door are NOT going to magically morph to the 6-series 4-dr; the car is NOT that compelling and they chose a 2-dr for a reason largely centered around that fact. The 6 sedan is 'another sausage' in the chain. It a tailor made failure in the making.

Interestingly enough, the 4-series Grand Coupe outsells the 4-series 2 door.  So in reality the best selling 4-series is a sedan.   Which is why they might as well just make a 3-series sedan and 3-series coupe like the old days.

Because they introduced the 4-series to be a coupe and it turns out the sales all went to a sedan anyway.  What is the point of that?  And some hardcore BMW fan will say the 4-series Grand coupe has an inch wider track than a 3-series sedan so the handling is better but that is just rubbish.  Makes no sense to come up with a 4-series line if all you are going to do is sell 3-series sedans with new badges.

The new 8 will take the place of the 6 on the market. It will be more posh and upscale.

BMW is said to be working on a new 6 that will be more sporty to do battle with the Corvette, 911, and such.

BMW needs to address the torpedo'ing sales of the core models, not fiddlefart around with 2 new models that together won't sell 400 units between them.

I like that 6 series interior...the 6 series Gran Coupe is the best looking of the current 6 series, IMO...I like it's styling over the 5 series or 7 series..

When it comes to the falling sales of the 3/5/7 series, I agree.  As for the interior of the 6 series Gran Coupe, Buick has comparable or better interiors than that.

The 6-series interior is way too tight for a car that large. I get that it's supposed to be a grand tourer and not a 7-series sedan, but it's just too small inside.  The CLS is much better feeling in comparison.

      Back in June, Ford and Volkswagen signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a new alliance that would focus on commercial vehicles. Since then, the two companies have been in discussions about it and there have been various rumors flying about. Yesterday, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess added some more fuel to the fire.
      Speaking to reporters outside of the White House, Diess revealed that the German automaker is interested in using Ford's plants in the U.S. to build vehicles.
      "We might use Ford capacity here in the U.S. to build cars for us," said Diess.

      “We need additional capacity here in the United States, we need an additional car plant for VW and Audi combined.”
      The company is in "quite advanced negotiations in Tennessee" about a new plant in the state - Volkswagen operates one in Chattanooga for the Passat and Atlas. But Diess did say "there might be other options as well," most likely talking about using some of Ford's plants in the U.S.
      For now, this is an idea being floating out there. The two are continuing their talks about what this alliance will look like. Diess said more details would come out in January.

      Ford has been banking on China to help revive sales of Lincoln and made plans to start building models in late 2019. But the on-going trade war between the U.S. and China has caused the company to reconsider their plans.
      “What we want to do is accelerate that. We will look for opportunities, but it’s a big undertaking and I think it won’t be a significant change in our plans,” said Joy Falotico, head of Lincoln and Ford’s chief marketing officer to Bloomberg.
      Currently, Lincoln doesn't have any local production in China. Instead, the brand has been importing vehicles from the U.S. which has meant getting hit with a 40 percent tariff by the Chinese government. This has caused sales of Lincoln vehicles to slow to a crawl. Last year, Lincoln sales rose 66 percent in China. But in October, sales are up just 3 percent.
      Ford is trying to move the timing of Lincoln production to sometime before late 2019. According to Falotico, moving the timing slightly would be a big help. The first model that would be part of this plan is the recently introduced Aviator.
      Also under consideration is Lincoln plans to export some Chinese-built models to the U.S. Falotico said the brand would likely build the same models in both countries.

      Beginning next month, Toyota will slow down one of its three assembly lines at its Georgetown, Kentucky plant. Aside from building the Avalon and Lexus ES, Georgetown is home to the Camry - the best-selling car in the U.S. for the past 16 years.
      “The auto industry is cyclical, and our normal process is to proactively plan months in advance for volume adjustments,” said Rick Hesterberg, a Toyota spokesman to Bloomberg.
      Hesterberg declined to comment on how much production would be reduced by the slowdown. He did say that none of the 8,000 permanent workers or 1,500 temps will be laid off during this slowdown.
      Demand for the Camry has been slipping for the past few years as buyers are opting for SUVs and trucks. So far in 2018, Camry sales have 6.1 percent when compared to the same time last year.
