Ford News: Ford and Deutsche Post Team Up to Build EV Transits

Ford of Germany and StreetScooter GmbH a subsidiary of Deutsche Post, Germany's postal service, are teaming up to build 2500 electric powered Ford Transit delivery vans by the end of 2018.

StreetScooter and Ford begin production next month. Production starts with a standard Ford Transit chassis and then it is fitted with a battery-electric drive train and a cargo body based on Deutsche Post's and DHL Paket's (yet another Deutsche Post subsidiary) specifications.

StreetScooter already manufactures small EV vans and cycles for delivery service.

No word yet on range or charge times, however the new EV Vans are intended for urban use, suggesting a limited range and charge time.

In the US the standard Transit wheel is 16 inch, don't know what it is in Europe.    16s look small nowadays, considering subcompact CUVs like the Trax have them, and 18-20s are the norm on midsize SUVs.

:duck: EVs don't idle.  If you're not moving, the only electricity you're using is whatever is powering the stereo and dashboard (miniscule).

No idling, it would just shut off when not moving, right?

Ah, this is what happens when you work on a gas powered car all day....:P

 

But, good point-that is true. Granted, they might be running a bunch on stuff and charging their phones....but they would still be good for a while......

The article didn't mention battery size, but even half a Telsa battery would be more than enough to charge your phone battery for a month.

      The folks over at Hagerty found something interesting on the NHTSA website the other day, a VIN decoder ring that shows a second 2.3 liter 4-cylinder turbo with a horsepower rating of TBD.   Ford dropped the V6 in the base Mustang after 2018 deciding the Turbo-4 was enough, but crosstown rival Chevy kept their V6 going alongside their 275 horsepower 2.0T.  While Ford's 2.3T beats the Chevy Turbo in power, it comes up short against Chevy's V6.  With this finding, it looks like Ford is going try to rectify the deficit.
      Given that a similar 2.3T is good for 350 hp in the Focus RS, Ford should be able to easily surpass the 335 horsepower the Camaro V6 produces.  A statement from a Ford representative declined to give details but said that we would have exciting news about Mustang in Spring 2019.

      Detroit Auto Maker Rivian landed $700M in investment commitments lead by Amazon.  Rumors were swirling earlier this week that Amazon and GM were in talks to provide investment that valued the company between $1B and $2B.  GM is not part of this round of investing, but that does not mean GM is out of it just yet.
      Rivian plans to introduce the R1T pickup (shown above) in 2020 with the R1S SUV following later.   Four more vehicles are planned starting in 2025.  The vehicles are set to be produced at Rivian's plant in Normal, Ill., a former Mitsubishi facility.
      Amazon's interest in Rivian includes using Rivian's technology to support its own logistics and delivery services.  GM's interest comes from CEO Mary Barra's commitment to a Zero emissions future.  GM is studying the feasibility of an Electrified GMC Sierra  while crosstown rival Ford has plans for an EV F-150.

While not even on sale yet, Dieter Zetsche, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars says that the automaker will have difficulty meeting the demand in 2019 and unlikely even in 2020.  He told Die Welt "But we're doing everything we can to achieve maximum capacity".  Official production estimates for the model have not yet been released.
      The Mercedes Benz EQC will debut in the US in 2020.  Its two electric motors are rated for 402 horsepower and 564 lb-ft of torque.  The 80kWh battery pack is capable of taking the crossover approximately 228 miles or more.   Official range estimates have not yet been released.
      Production of the EQC will begin in Bremen soon, while China production will start later in 2019.
