Hyundai News:Hyundai Hops Aboard the EV Train

Recommended Posts

Hyundai had a put a lot of confidence into hydrogen being the future power source for vehicles. But much like Toyota, the Korean automaker is realizing that electrics are the way of the future and they might want to jump on the bandwagon soon.

Today at a press conference in Seoul, Hyundai announced that it would be placing electric vehicles front and center with plans to launch several long-range EVs in the coming years. This includes an electric version of the Kona early next year and an electric sedan for Genesis in 2021 that is expected to have a range of 310 miles. Hyundai also confirmed a report by Reuters saying the company is working on a dedicated EV platform.

"We're strengthening our eco-friendly car strategy, centering on electric vehicles," said Hyundai Executive Vice President Lee Kwang-guk.

Hyundai isn't fully giving up on hydrogen. The automaker showed a concept version of its new fuel cell SUV that will replace the Tucson Hydrogen. Hyundai says the model can go 360 miles on one tank of hydrogen. It will launch in Korea next year, with the U.S. and Europe following sometime after.

Very interesting, but I feel the Hydrogen thing is just too little too late. EV will surpass Hydrogen. About time they got going on the EV bandwagon.

EV's for all.  This band wagon will start to fill up fast, the technology is just coming to where it is affordable and scaleable.

Well, I'm trying to talk Albert into a plug-in for his next vehicle, but so few of them come in AWD. Those that do have pathetic EV only ranges and are extremely expensive. I think we're at a tipping point for Plug-In and we're going to see a whole bunch of them hit the market or be announced in the next 18 months.   It was the Pacifica Plug-In that convinced me of the virtues of the technology. The amount of pull the Pacifica has under hard acceleration is joyfully inappropriate for a mini-van.   The fact that it can get 84 MPGe is the cherry on top..... it actually has me considering one, but Albert won't allow it.

*sigh* No wagons, no minivan, no manual transmission, no coupes as daily drivers, no RWD..... it might be time for a new boyfriend.

Herick Fisker is back again after his original company succumbed to bankruptcy in 2014.  Now as Fisker, Inc., the latest vehicle he is showing is an electric crossover concept.  While we have a picture, the technical details are light.
The EV will be priced near $40,000 and have a 300 mile range.  Powered by an 80 kWh enhanced lithium-ion battery, there will be rear-motor rear wheel drive and optional dual motor all wheel drive available.
Fisker is planning on the not-yet-named SUV in late 2021, just about a year after the Tesla Model Y is due to hit the market.  Fisker is planning on a Telsa-Like online only sales model with "nationwide concierge service".

Last week, Hyundai released images of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata sedan, but was scant with the technical details.  Today, Hyundai revealed that the 2020 Sonata will ride on a new Third-Generation platform designed to enhance safety, efficiency, and driving performance. The platform underpinning the 2020 Sonata will eventually find its way into other products.
On the safety front, the platform uses super high tensile steel, hot stamping, and a multi-load path structure.  The Multi-load path helps in a collision by increasing the amount of energy absorbed by the structure and reduces intrusions into the passenger cabin.  In a small frontal overlap crash, the tires are designed to move outward to prevent spinning and possible secondary collisions.
To make the Sonata more efficient, the platform directs the flow of air to optimize cooling and heat dissipation.
Stability and performance is enhanced by lowering the position of the engine and transmission to lower the overall center of gravity.  Dramatically increased lateral stiffness helps with handling agility.  Noise reduction is improved via reinforced sound-absorbing systems.
Additionally, Hyundai has teamed up with Bose to create a specially tuned premium sound system with 12 channels. The system will use Bose Centerpoint technology to take a stereo signal and convert it to multiple channels.
Powertrain information still has not been released.
The formal U.S. unveiling of the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is expected at the New York Auto Show next month.
