1975-1982 Ford Granada - The Upscale Budget Car

Recommended Posts

Were these really considered upscale or was that just Ford PR Department wishful thinking?   I remember growing up these seemed so cheapo looking compared to E-body Chryslers and A-Body GMs.  That said, they seem way more solid than the GM A-Bodys.

I think that was just wishful thinking by marketing..the print ads compared them to Mercedes Benz.  These were competitors to the GM X-bodies of '75-79 (Nova, etc).  They were just old Maverick/Comets with new squared off bodies and interiors....Ford got a lot of use out of the old Falcon platform from the 60s.

The release of the Fox platform Fairmont/Zephyr in '78 made them obsolete, and then for '81-82 they were on the Fox platform (Mercury version was renamed Cougar), before being restyled and inexplicably named LTD and Marquis for '83, eventually to be replaced by the Taurus and Sable for '86.
