Today, Volkswagen announced that it would be building a five-passenger variant of the Atlas crossover. The “Five-Passenger Atlas,” as Volkswagen is calling it at the moment will be shown in concept form next week at the New York Auto Show. It is unclear whether the five-seat version will be shorter, but it appears to look slightly different than the standard Atlas. The new model will be built on Volkswagen's MQB platfrom and produced alongside the Atlas at the Chattanooga, TN plant.

VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCES A NEW FIVE-PASSENGER ATLAS SUV TO BE BUILT IN CHATTANOOGA

Chattanooga, Tenn. – Volkswagen of America, Inc., announced today that it will be building a new five-passenger SUV at its Chattanooga factory. Based off Volkswagen’s award-winning MQB platform, the new Volkswagen SUV will be a variant of the seven-passenger Atlas and, like its sibling, will be designed and engineered for the American market.

“The Atlas has built strong momentum for Volkswagen in the SUV segment, and we are excited to grow our SUV portfolio with this new, Chattanooga-assembled five-passenger SUV,” said Hinrich J. Woebcken, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “We are not only committed to this market, we are committed to our U.S. manufacturing home in Chattanooga, Tennessee.”

Woebcken made the announcement in Chattanooga today with Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.

“During my time as Governor, I’ve watched Volkswagen Chattanooga flourish from a single vehicle producer, starting with the Passat, into what it is today—a thriving U.S. manufacturing operation that can produce three models, and counting,” said Governor Haslam. “We value Volkswagen as a committed partner, whose investments in the state have not only created new jobs, but have helped us build a skilled Tennessee workforce. I look forward to watching as VW continues to grow in Tennessee.”

Volkswagen will invest approximately $340 million to bring the vehicle to market, in addition to approximately $900 million already invested to expand the plant for Atlas production. The five-passenger Atlas variant will mark the third Volkswagen model assembled at the Chattanooga factory. Volkswagen Chattanooga also manufactures the Passat, which went on sale in 2011, and the Atlas, which started sales in 2017.

A concept version of the five-passenger SUV will be officially unveiled at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Nice looking CUV, they have reduced the Coupe like top of the auto. I hope they keep this as the Coupe roofline is so overdone. I have to say I really like this look in the drawing. Now execute it 100%.

What is wrong with the low profile rims? Very different than you see on other auto's and of course I bet a pain in the ass to wash. I like a simple easy to clean rim, but this is nicely different. :smilewide:

Size is fine, but the style looks like they could cut grass....:lol:

I much prefer a 2-row CUV/SUV whatnot if the proposed third row is not genuinely accommodating.  But right now I am more interested in seeing Volkswagen's U.S. substitute for the T-Roc.  In green with a white roof, brown leatherette, a TDi and a stick with AWD.

 

But I like the 2019 Ford Edge too.

Good luck on that dream combo, VW seems to have moved away from TDi and manual. Sticks are pretty much dead as are diesels in anything other than a Pickup Truck or the few American CUVs.

There will be no more diesels in the US. So you can forget about that one. Expect our T-Roc substitue to be powered by the 1.4

Volkswagen turbodiesels await their fate near Pikes Peak International Raceway in Colorado Springs

400,000 TDIs sitting on 37 lots. Cream will go back to VW dealers for resale, rest to be unloaded on the wholesale market. A company got the contract to drive each one every 30 days around a track, wash and keep them maintained till they are dealt with.

      "It's a bridging technology," between internal-combustion and full-electric cars, said Matthew Renna, Volkswagen North America Region's vice president of e-mobility yesterday at the Chicago Auto Show.
      "It's very cost-prohibitive to have two different powertrains on one platform."
      Volkswagen has made no secret about their electric car ambitions, with plans to launch a full lineup within the next few years. While Europe will get a small hatchback based on I.D. Concept, the U.S. will get a production version of the Crozz concept. Volkswagen is also planning on selling their upcoming EVs in all 50 states, not only in those that require automakers to sell certain number of EVs.
      "The plan is to sell nationwide. The goal is a nationwide roll-out ASAP," said Renna.

But a new report from Autocar says the new chairman, Herbert Diess has canned the powertrain.
      No reason was given as to why this decision was reversed. Volkswagen is still planning to do mild-hybrid versions of the standard Golf that will utilize a 48-Volt electrical system.
      Autocar says the next-generation GTI will use an updated version of the turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder producing either 252 or 286 horsepower. The current model in the U.S. punches out 227 horsepower. A six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch will be the available transmissions.

      Subaru has announced that next week, it will be showing off the all-new 2020 Legacy at the Chicago Auto Show. To promote the announcement, the Japanese automaker has dropped a couple of teaser images.
      The exterior looks to be an evolution of the current shape, complete with the same headlights as on the 2018 Legacy. Previous spy photos hint at a larger grille and a lower roofline. We have a slightly better idea with the interior as it appears Subaru is going with a more premium look. There's also a large tablet screen that houses a number of functions for the driver and passenger. We can make out some physical controls for the volume and tune.
      We're expecting the 2020 Legacy to move to the modular platform that underpins the new Ascent, Forester, and Impreza.
