Sketch Competition #5 - GM City Car

Recommended Posts

Welcome to Sketch Competition #5!

Small cars have always been part of the American automotive landscape, though traditionally more crabgrass than St. Augustine; yeah, its green and it fills up your lawn, but it still looks cheap and it sucks. Apply the same school of thought to a Tercel or Civic or Escort.

But the recent years have shown that smaller cars can attain a certain level of appeal and while the MINI Cooper is the poster child for this new movement, evidence can been seen elsewhere. Even entrants like the Mazda3, Nissan Versa, and Dodge Caliber whose precedessors were anything but appealing are reborn with navigation, traction and stability control, and unique design and equipment features.

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to sketch what your ideal GM small car would be. Your sketch should include at minimum 2 (two) of the following:

-3/4 Front View

-3/4 Rear View

-Interior View

Remember, people will be voting based on the overall presentation of your entry, so the more views, the better, including ones not specifically listed above.

Aside from 800x600 size guidelines, remember this car will be small in exterior dimension (think no larger than Cobalt). Exactly how small is up to you. You're also encouraged to be very creative and to make mention of unique features you'd like to see on a car. Consider that odd ideas that wouldn't normally be accepted on a larger, mainstream car is completely normal is this segment. No restrictions on bodystyle, powerplant, number of wheels (if you're really crazy), height, or division.

Basically, think about how YOU would want a small car.

This is a segment GM hasn't successfully competed in so far, so let's show them what we can do!

The winner will recieve a GM-related prize!

Deadline is Tuesday, June 13th@ 11:59PM your local time.

Good luck! :CG_all:

im a little confused about the size of the vehicle, is it supposed to be civic/ corolla sized, aveo/yaris sized or can it even be a smart car competitor?

Any of the above. The choice is yours.

A coupla prelim sketches, 2 concepts a true small car & a small street racer...

...as I said both are preliminary quick sketches to try out the concepts on you.

Sorry I removed those first ones, but they sucked anyway...here is the redo of the preliminary for my Citicar service modular vehicle (SMV)...if ya saw the first street racer you will understand how I got to this one. This is more Tractor like, and could be run with JUST the front half and varoius rearends could be attached to it so it could be a Taxicab or a Delivery Van or a One person citicar, as it comes with an expandable and detachable chassis, so it can be configured for a variety of purposes. I really like this one & am going to work it up to a full presentation.

LOL...ya can't blame a guy for try'in !

OK ...NO street racer.

Still ya gotta admit it was "out there" on the multilple wheels sugestion, huh ?

I am redoing the second design as a adjustable chassis car from a single seater to a 3seat or cargo area design ?? similar ideas more citylike tho...OK.

Here ya go, on the first one..."Citicar Commuter", OK it's got a little street racer in it too...more for the commute, but small enough to park in the city ;

Entry# 1 Pontiac PC - "personal commuter"

I like how you did the rear. I am just not to sure about the name. It doesnt seem like a Pontiac but more like a Buick but great idea. I have a Pontiac hatch coming when I have the rear and interior finished. I will submit them all at once. It is basically a little sports hatch that has a Solstice inspired front.

if you cant read any of that... heres a list of features:

the decklid raises up to the roofline on a motor with glass windows at its side to create a hatchback for more cargo room when needed

-if even more room is needed, the rear glass can be retracted and the rear seats will fold down... creating a covered pickup bed sort of thing

- when this happens a camera hidden in the arrowhead will become the rear view mirror, the display for this will actually be right in the mirror itself

When the hatch is up, and the rear glass retracted, the rear seats can move further backwards and recline lower, allowing the passenger seat to do the same, this can accomodate long trips in hours of traffic

there is a retractable tray in the dash board in front of the passenger, this allows for either work to be done during travel or a meal to be eaten, side walls on the tray and recessions help prevent spills

- the rear seats have a similar tray but it is in the center spine next to the DVD player, the trays pull up and fold over the passenger's lap

The DVD system can be displyed on the Nav screen, but only when the car is parked

the two buttons on the passenger side of the radio are to raise the hatchback and retract the rear glass, this cannot be done while the car is in motion
