Ford News: Ford GT Production Falls Short Last Year, Works On Making Up the Difference

Ford's original plan for the GT was to build the model for two years, with 250 units being built each year. Then Ford extended the production run to four years and expanded the total number of vehicles built to 1,000. So how is Ford doing on their production targets for the GT? According to Motor Authority, they haven't gone as planned.

This information was first brought to light by a GT message board claiming Ford didn't reach their 250 unit goal for 2017. Motor Authority reached out to Ford and a spokesman confirmed that only 137 GTs were built last year. Why the delay?

"This is a hand-built supercar, which we are committed to deliver flawlessly. We built into our process an extended ramp-up due to several factors such as global homologation testing and supplier constraints," the spokesman said in a statement.

Multimatic, the company that is building the GT for Ford explained they "hadn't built cars on this scale before" and it them some time to meet its goal of building one car per work day. The company only reached this goal in the middle of last year. Issues with suppliers and minor issues also played a role. Multimatic did say that everything is on schedule for the full run of 250 vehicles for 2018.

At the current pace, this would only mean Ford would produce 888 Its, 112 units short from their original goal. The Ford spokesman said they are sticking with their goal of 1,000 vehicles. This likely means Ford will extend production one more year to meet it.

To be expected, Ford has not built as many hand built auto's as GM with the Corvette has. I fully expect them to catch up this year though.

Apples and oranges..the Corvette isn't hand built is it?  Much higher volume...this a very expensive, low volume novelty.  

As an aside, I really liked the '05-06 Ford GT.  This car I find very unappealing in person...the styling does nothing for me.

Yes the low end corvettes are much more robotic built, but my understanding and maybe someone else can chime in is that the top end units are still from the power train to assembly mostly hand built. You get the signed powertrain plates in the top end models and there is allot of pride in the assembly. I would think the GT is not much different.

What Corvette is anywhere near as hand-built as the GT?

As I stated not everything is 100% hand built not even on the GT. Corvette does have more robotic assembly especially on the low end, but the high end units, especially the supercharged powertrains are still hand built and 100% of the hand built power trains are done at bowling green.

Hand built vs Not Hand built

Just for the record, I don't care how either car is put together. I just find it stupid to say both are hand built. Yes, the engines are put together by hand at Corvette and that's it(LT4..or LT5?).

I think hand built is the wrong wording to use to describe the way vehicle are made, as some is just tools scaled in size, hand turned tq wrench vs a handheld but powered eletric wrench for fasteners and bolts.

 

Rather it’s whether there’s a mechanized production line or you have cell - manufacturing with defined stages of production. 

 

But really, the Ford GT is the only recent supercar I know outside of the Late Dodge Viper that is largely built by hand but doesn’t get the white glove treatment like you see @ Mclaren or Ferrari.

 

Instead it’s built like every car is a prototype. And that’s because Ford does not need a permanent site for car assembly , and they went with multimatic - they do make race cars I think but just never this scale and size of production run. It’s like the more boutique and rare you actually go, the more crude the production looks

 

The Ford GT production reminds me of how Pagani builds its car. Except that glorious titanium everywhere tho. And the Ford GT is kinda meant to be a bruiser and be functional with beauty emerging from the sum of its parts - while the Zonda and Huyara have intricate details in every part.

And functionally, do you need Titainum everything for every switch or dial?

Course not, which is why Ford GT has Ford Fiesta level parts bin for every switch/dial/toggle not on the steering wheel.

      Rumor has it that Ford is working on a V8 powered version of their Ranger Raptor currently sold in overseas markets. Only available in other parts of the world, the current Ranger Raptor is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder diesel that produces 210 horsepower and 369 lb.-ft of torque, but a report in Wheels magazine says that Ford Australia is working with an external engineering company to swap the 2.0 diesel for a 5.0-liter V8 from the Mustang GT.  The odd thing about this is that the Ranger Raptor 5.0 would be still built with the 2.0-liter diesel under the hood and then later converted to V8 gasoline power.
      Expect power to be about the same as it makes in the Australian spec Mustang GT, a healthy 455 horsepower and 410 lb.-ft of torque. 
      If it all comes together, the Ranger Raptor 5.0 is expected to go on sale in Australia next year, sold by Ford dealers and backed by the full 5-year warranty. For now, the Ranger Raptor remains forbidden fruit to the U.S. no matter what engine is under the hood.
