Alternative Fuels & Propulsion RANDOM

Of course they're going to need the IC portion to charge the battery or use as a generator. It's just great they if they have a 36 gallon tank, it'll last a hell of a lot longer than any generator AND be silent from inside your home, unlike any other generator.

Haha, while ignoring the elephant in the room... CALIFORNIA... the biggest whiny brat in the union.

So, you're not wrong, but just wanted to zoom in a bit for more detail.... Storms do happen, no grid is ever 100%.  I lose power shockingly often for being only ~10 miles from a downtown metro ar

The hilariously inept Newsom has provided plenty of material with this one.  The meme-makers are really making hay!    Chevy's new California-Compliant transportation alternative!

Very cool read, Loved the part where neighbors Generator required a 5 gallon refill every 8hrs and the Ford Hybrid pickup used a quarter tank in 72hrs. roughly using about 2 gallons every 12 hrs. Very efficient and glad some could afford the Hybrid pickup and use it.

Even better. Was merely countering the "$60K" comment earlier.

Oh good grief. I wasn’t being literal and it should have been obvious. I was just throwing a number out there. Besides, in the context of what I was talking about, it doesn’t make a difference. Still $50K plus for a truck with a generator which most folks can’t afford given the situation I was speaking of in Texas.

You can sticker a 4x4 3.5L hybrid starting at $51K.

Believe me, I have thought about it.

But I still love the idea of a Chevy Trail Boss.

Breaking News, with the support of the state auto dealer's Virgina is the next state to adopt the CARB standards from California with a focus to become all EV but with a catch. Virgina says they will not mandate at this time a set date of banning ICE auto sales, but will continue to work with the Auto industry and dealers till a time is reached that warrants banning ICE auto sales.

Tesla has played an on again off again game with the Tesla Y CUV RWD Standard range model that had less than a 250 mile range. As of the end of last week, it seems that Tesla has decided to kill it off quietly and that kills their cheapest CUV at $41,990 and now makes the long range model Y RWD their cheapest at $48,990 a $7,000 increase.

Interesting is that the Standard range RWD CUV Tesla Y was a head on competitor to the VW ID.4 that is coming to market this year. Now they are no longer a competitor.

Robb Report ~ Porsche is reporting its synthetic "eFuel" could make IC engines as clean as BEVs; that it is showing early promise to burn so clean -being a much less complex chemistry- that it could reduce the 'well-to-wheel' carbon footprint of a vehicle burning to to on parity with a BEV.

Aston Martin reported last spring that it, too, is working on a synthetic fuel as a valid alternative to expensive electric powertrains.

In 2020, only 3.2 million BE's were sold globally in a market that is 65.5 million - a take rate of merely 4.8%.

It is an interesting read if you read what Porsche put out about eFuel.

Porsche researches synthetic fuels

A bit of a different take when you read the news media take on it.

How Porsche's new e-fuel plant could pave the way for guilt-free classic-car motoring - Roadshow (cnet.com)

Porsche is still moving forward with plans to have half their auto's they sell be EV by 2025.

Seems Porsche sees eFuel as a way for ICE to last much longer but cleaner. One issue is that Porsche admits that for commercial fleets that need to reduce CO2, eFuel will not help in reducing it here. This is about having a sustainable fuel for existing ICE auto's.

Synthetic Oil, Synthetic eFuel, ways to extend ICE, but not really reduce cost of maintenance or simplification of power train.

Simplicity of powertrain is a non-issue with consumers, if one can draw a parallel to electronics and safety features- consumer crave MORE, not less. Multi-turbos, coil on plug ignition, cam within cam... THAT’s what gets consumers ‘excited’!

Maintenance is a... ghost herring. 😉

gm hit a mile stone with their Ultium project. The final beam was put in place for the 2.8 million sq ft Lordstown Ohio battery production site. This being a joint venture between gm and LG of Korea has some pretty cool statistics so far.

  • The Topping out was done from start to finish in 10 months.
  • 500,000 man hours have been spent so far on this building which is slated for a 2022 completion.
  • Building Frame Work is done using all USA made steel.
  • Plant is equal to 30 football fields in size.
  • Plant annual capacity of battery production initially will be 30 gigawatts with room to expand.
    • Tesla Gigafactory just boosted production to 39 gigawatts with a maximum of 150 gigawatts production in the current building as a comparison to GM.
  • GM is on a robust hiring process to get all 1,100 workers hired and on board for training in Northeast Ohio.
  • Cost of the Facility is $2.3 billion split between the two companies.

>>"Chinese scientists have used nanoplates that generate power from temperature changes to create synthetic methanol, which could be a clean way of removing CO2 from the atmosphere, as well as generating e-fuels.

The paper, published in Nature Communications, describes a process of using the ambient temperature change over the course of a day to generate electricity, used to combine carbon dioxide from the air with water in order to make methanol.
Methanol (the poisonous form of ethanol or "common booze") can be turned into petrol whether it's made out of moonshine or cracked out of the air on a molecular level. The latter method is more environmentally friendly, as it both doesn't require crops and ultimately removes CO2 from the atmosphere, something we crucially need to do."<<

Thanks for posting, as you pointed out, it does have a European flare and I think it will appeal to those wanting more of a European auto vibe than traditional American.

How well it will sell, only time will tell, but I do think it will do a decent sales especially when you compare the fit n finish to Tesla.

Benefits of electric over Diesel, seems it will improve knee quality of commercial drivers as regenerative breaking will reduce how often a person has to apply the breaks. Also, reduced medical issues due to breathing in the diesel exhaust fumes which are proven toxic.

Charged EVs | Another benefit of electric trucks: they’re easier on drivers’ knees - Charged EVs

Insights on Electric Trucks for Retailers and Trucking Companies | Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (c2es.org)

The link above allows you to download and read the large report, but the key take away were posted as such:

Key Takeaways

  • The upfront costs for electric trucks remain a primary barrier to investment in electric trucks. However, financial incentives can reduce these upfront capital costs and models indicate that the total cost of ownership for an average electric truck can be lower than a diesel or natural gas equivalent with adequate incentives. In California, for example, several programs support EVs including the low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) and the Hybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) program.
    • One resource for finding incentives is the Alternative Fuels Data Center: https:// afdc.energy.gov/laws.
    • Several retail and trucking companies interviewed suggested that operators of California fleets should strongly consider electrifying at least a portion of their fleets to take advantage of the financial incentives available.
    • Electric heavy-duty vehicles have many tangible benefits, including several inherent health advantages. These include a much quieter ride than diesel trucks, making EVs less impactful on a driver’s hearing, and no tailpipe emissions.
  • As retail companies electrify their fleets, increased collaboration between a company’s energy team and fleet management team will be required to maximize organization-wide efficiencies such as procurement and energy management. Without collaboration, costs could be much higher.
  • Vehicle maintenance is still a concern. Companies need technicians who are trained for electric trucks and savvy on new electronic software systems. One retail company highlighted how they were using EV manufacturers to provide maintenance and support but suggested there was also a need build out a third-party EV maintenance network nationwide.
  • Communication between electric truck users and EV manufacturers is an important part of the process. One retail company who had conversations with EV manufacturers noted they were very receptive to feedback on usability and ergonomic design from companies who piloted EVs. This is a key aspect of the electric truck development process and can help with technology improvements and potentially accelerate the speed of deployment as manufacturers better understand what potential users want.

While not likely to come to the US unless it is a rebadge by VW, a new hot EV little Hatchback is going into production for Europe.
