GM News: Could Hummer Be Coming Back?

Recommended Posts

As part of General Motors' tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers, there is a planned $3 billion investment into the Detroit-Hamtramck plant to make electric trucks, SUVs, and vans. The program, called BT1 is part of a larger $7.7 billion investment in GM's plants over the next four years.

The BT1 program includes an electric truck for GMC and an electric SUV for Cadillac for the 2023 model year. But before that happens, in 2021 a low volume BT1 pickup will start production under a different brand while a performance truck follows in 2022, and then an electric SUV in 2023.  Rumor has it that these low volume BT1 vehicles could be sold under the Hummer brand, not used since 2010, but that decision has not been finalized.

If GM did bring the Hummer brand back as an EV brand, it would have instant name brand recognition and a leg up on rival startup Rivian who has a truck due out in 2020. GM would not need to spend as much money to market the brand.

The vehicles on the new BT1 platform would use a "skateboard" architecture that bundles the batteries and electric motor together. The architecture is highly flexible allowing GM to build vehicles in front, rear, or all-wheel drive configurations.

This is exciting, while as a Separate brand to me does not make sense compared to a Hummer package on the GMC brand.

Glad to read this experiment won't be attached to a bread and butter brand.  "Hummer" does fit as an EV nom de plume.

Hummer as an EV brand is a nice rebrand for a brand that trolled and angered environmentalists for almost 15 years.

Will GM be smart enough to make Electra the car/CUV EV brand?!

The HUMVEE(E)? :scratchchin:

I know the H2 wasn't the H1 or HUMVEE, but would still be funny to see the eco-terrorists internally combust and burst into flames like all the Hummer H2's they've burned up :explode:

Interesting. As long as they don't stick that sluggish Inline 5 in it.... Man, was our H3 slow. I ended up giving it to my wife.

That was a good engine in the Colorado and Canyon... but the H3 was too much for it.

It was smooth enough. Audi did a much better job with their I5, at least with acceleration....

Won't work as a brand, too niche and too much of a bad reputation.  I think a single "Hummer" model sold as a GMC Hummer that is their version of the Wrangler with a turbo 4 and a turbo 4 hybrid option could work.

It makes more sense than a 4-cylinder being badged 45 while a 6-cylinder is badged 43.

      NEURON EV

CES 2020 has been a busy place this year with more auto companies showing of prototypes and finally production ready auto's than ever before. We have seen so much including the latest in super dense solid state batteries for the EVs to motorcycles and bikes.
This year we now get to see the latest competition to Tesla and Rivian in a well funded California / China based EV auto company called NEURON EV. This company has a swiss army knife of a truck/suv auto as well as a Semi truck that they say is going into production in 2020.

The truck which is seen here in Silver has a sister truck that was running around the streets which is the following Black T-One.

All the details you could ever want can be found here on this truck: https://www.neuronev.co/new-products/t-one-p-gyrwr
The cool thing about this modular truck is that is can be more than a truck, a tractor, a van. there are no limits to how one can configure up this beast of an EV.

The seat options are an interesting take as you can go like how Tesla showed their Semi with a center driving position as a base 3 seat configuration of 3 captain chairs, or a single drivers captain chair and a bench seat behind for 4 people and go from there to cover a wide range of colors, materials, etc. in customizing your auto.
While this company is looking at this modular truck and semi for the US, in china they will have many more auto options including their V.E.G.A. or Versatile Electric Grand Automobile.

The company has great plans and while they have only two models for the US market, China will get many more that includes a medium duty truck, a bus, a MAP or Multipurpose Autonomous Platform focused on shipping yards, a HUB or autonomous transportation auto, in addition to the car, semi and truck.
NEURON EV has not released any details about their hp / torque other than to say class leading at this time. Two wheel drive and All Wheel Drive will be the choices folks will have and talk of a base 300 mile range battery pack. More details are to come later this year.
First Press release of 2020 can be found here:

General Motors will be bringing back the Hummer name to sell a new electric truck as part of the GMC lineup.
The Wall Street Journal first broke the news yesterday with GM moving forward on plans to bring Hummer back that was first reported back in June. The report also said that the company would tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James. GM declined to comment.
The decision is likely due to the planned $3 billion investment for the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that we reported back in October. The investment is to gear up the plant to build an electric pickup for GMC and an electric Cadillac SUV by 2023. But in 2021, the plant will produce a "low volume BT1 pickup" under a different brand. At the time we speculated that it may be Hummer. This seems to lineup with the reporting done by the Wall Street Journal which says the truck will be similar in design to the Jeep Renegade.
Bloomberg adds that there are plans for a large SUV for Hummer if the truck proves successful according to sources. The sources also say that the company is considering selling the new Hummer truck in existing dealers under the name of “Hummer by GMC.”
