Ford News: Ford Mustang Mach-E Leaks Out Ahead of LA Auto Show

Recommended Posts

Leaks of privileged information happen.  In this case, Ford pushed these images and pages to their consumer website in a way which was easy for the folks at MachEForum to find.

Here are the basics, the best of each spec, the 2021 Ford Mach-E will have up to 300 miles of driving range, run 0-60 in mid-three second range, and have optional all-wheel drive.  You're going to prioritize those specs though because you won't be able to get them all in the same car.

All models of Mach-E will be able to recharge 47 miles in 10 minute of DC fast charging in a 150-kw charger

The base model is called Select and starts at $43,895. It is powered by a 255 horsepower, 306 lb.-ft of torque motor in the rear.  You can opt for all-wheel drive which increases torque to 429lb.ft. This model gets an EPA estimated range of 230 miles and a 0 to 60 sprint of mid 5-seconds. If you qualify for the full $7,500 federal tax credit, the price can be as low as $36,395. It's equipped with 18-inch wheels

Next up is the Premium trim, starting at $50,600. This comes with 19-inch wheels and again in RWD or AWD configurations. EPA estimated range is 300 miles on the RWD model and 0 to 6- remains mid 5-seconds.

There will be a trim called California Route 1 which is an extended range rear-wheel drive model. It has an EPA range of 300 miles and a mid 6-second range sitting on 18-inch wheels.

Then there is the top of the line GT, starting at $60,500. EPA range is estimated at 235 miles and a mid 3-second range. It comes standard with all-wheel drive.

For early adopters, there is a Mach-E First Edition. It offers three exterior colors, including and exclusive "Grabber Blue Metallic", interior contrast stitching, First Edition scuff plates, brushed aluminum pedals, and red brake calipers. This model seems to be a happy medium on range and performance with a 270 mile EPA estimated range, mid 5-second 0-60, AWD, and 19-inch wheels.

Inside the Mach-E is a large Telsa-like center screen though with a single physical dial at the bottom. A simple dash and slim gauge cluster sit behind a 3-spoke wheel badged with the Mustang logo.

Ford will officially share more information on Sunday night, and the specs listed above are subject to change. We'll keep you updated as more information comes out. In the meantime, scroll down to see all of the information grabbed in the screenshots.

Can not say I'm a big fan of the side profile, windows make me think of the previous gen ~2014 Tucson.  Hopefully looks nicer in person/in better images.

I see some Model X in the greenhouse...but smaller side windows.   I wonder how the door handles work..this still looks very 'concept car' in the pics..

Edit: these pics came up today...strange door handles.  Why do car makers think they have to reinvent door handles just because it's an EV?  Why not normal door handles?

Mach-E or Model Y? Model Y gets my vote, especially with the Y Performance range of 280mi to the Mach-E GT of 235.

Saw this somewhere else...

They should make a bigger version called the Grand Mach-E, but it would mostly sell in Florida.

300 mile estimate is a little weak, IMO.

The Euro estimate is like 370 miles. I figured it would be 340-350 miles.

300 miles, AWD, mid 5 second car, that would be a pretty sweet daily.

The WLTP estimate is always more ambitious than the EPA estimate.  But the Bolt can beat the EPA estimate easily on a nice spring day.

Initial, cropped images looks interesting, but I have a feeling real world shots will make it look bloated. Esp if I can't get the Mustang car out of my mind's eye.
The tax credit possibility remains a 'ghost carrot' that -unless you're a tax idiot- you'd have to intentionally over-withdraw a full fiscal year ahead of your purchase in order to get. Most people won't see anywhere near $7500- might as well forget that 'discount'.

It looks good from the front, the back end looks a bit odd though.  I think the pricing seems pretty strong for this being an SUV and the range and performance offered.  It is similar to Model 3 pricing, but in SUV form, so it could sell well.

I dont understand by what you mean.  Are there obstacles to get the EV tax rebate?  And why do these obstacles exist?

Same price range as the Explorer also.  I assume this is a two row?

It’s not a rebate. It’s a tax credit. In the fiscal year you buy the EV, IF you owe MORE than $7500 on your federal income tax, you can take that reduction against what you owe. Only in the single designated year. If you owe the Gov’t $800, that’s your EV credit; $800. If the Gov’t owes you money back, your EV credit is $0.

And most people do not intentionally set their witholdings up so the Gov’t pockets $7500+ from their biweekly checks. That’s like $290/check.

So when your Model 3’s sticker says $54,321, you are signing loan paperwork to pay $54,321 (down payment, etc, aside).

This is why I feel Tesla and any others are being grotesquely / borderline criminally misleading by saying that $54,321 Model 3 is $46,821.

’Ghost carrot’.

Ah....

You see. I was calling it a rebate, because I really thought it was a rebate...

Tax credit.  And whatever you owe the government. THAT is your "rebate" come tax time. If you owe the government $800, and you bought an EV during that fiscal year, you dont pay the Feds a dime BECAUSE you bought an EV?  THAT is how it works, right?

Each person's credit is different and not applicable right away either. Very misleading indeed.

Thank-you.

Sounds like the reveal is going to be at 6pm PST tonight...odd, I guess during Sunday Night Football?  I won't be back home until at least 11 EST so I'll miss it live...oh well.

Many have heard of AI and they think Terminator. Yet AI in the computer industry has allowed us to build computers and accessories faster due to the ability of AI to sift through data faster than humans can. This brings us to how AI is helping the Auto industry transition to EV's and how battery tech will change much faster than in the last two decades.

IBM has announced their recent battery project is developing prototypes of new faster charging batteries that are free of Nickel and Cobalt thanks to AI. It has allowed them to quickly evaluate a set of 20,000 potential compounds for use in the Battery electrolytes. This would normally take 5 years via traditional human research and yet was accomplished in nine days using AI.
GM Ultium batteries and Panasonic batteries have reduced testing from three years to about six months. This is going from a large number of time consuming charging and discharging cycles to using AI to cover what would be done manually in three years to six months.

Gbatteries has used AI to build faster and more reliable DC fast chargers. InoBat from Slovakian has stated that AI is helping them to boost battery density by 20% with the batteries being sold in 2023.
VW has stated AI is helping them lay out a new roadmap of lite weight materials for auto's including their own batteries that are in development.
Dyson has claimed that AI is how they have brought Solid State batteries to market now.
AI is going to help usher in the next generation of not only Auto's but phones, computers, etc.  AI will touch just about every aspect of life for people.

According to Electrek web site, VW will open up their reservation system in September. Online reservations for the ID.4 EV will only require a $100 deposit. VW production of the ID.4 for European and Chinese markets has started and is on size to compete with the Tesla Y small CUV. The auto is expected to have about 250 miles of range in base form and start at $40,000. 300 miles plus for the top trim version. Production for the North American Market will start in early 2022 at Chattanooga Factory upon the construction completion of the assembly line and battery production plant. The auto has a .28 drag coefficient.

Thanks to a Chinese web site not being secure, actual production models have been caught before the official introduction. A muscular clean CUV EV is seen here and close to the Concept.

Lots of interesting stuff happening as GM by divisions starts to release more info on their EV programs.
First is a interesting video on their Ultium batteries. This clearly shows how versatile they can build the battery packs.

They have released a video of a side profile of the new Chevrolet Bolt morphing into the Bolt EUV. I was able to download the video and as such, way more visual detail than on the posted web sites below are showing.

Have to say the upcoming update to the Chevrolet Bolt and the EUV is nice looking and should sell even better than the old Bolt. Truly a much more CUV look.

A new brand will join under the Hyundai umbrella come next year. Dubbed Ioniq, this brand will focus on electric vehicles and launch their first model come 2021.
That first model will be a midsize crossover called the Ioniq 5. Based on the 45 Concept first shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show last year, the 5 follows a different beat in terms of design from other Hyundai models with sharp lines and corners, narrow grille, and a interior that is very minimalist. Spy shots from earlier in the year showed that Hyundai is planning to make this into a production model, likely using an electric powertrain.

Next up is the 6 which again will base its design on another Hyundai concept. That concept is the Prophecy which appears to be a mashup of the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan. This model will appear in 2022. Rounding out the family is the Ioniq 7, a large SUV that will debut in 2024.
All of the vehicles will utilize the upcoming Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which promises "fast charging capability and plentiful driving range." Expect to see this platform used on other vehicles part of the Hyundai umbrella (Kia and Genesis).
But what will this mean for the current Hyundai Ioniq (hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric)? According to the automaker, these models will keep the Ioniq name but have the addition of the powertrain type to it.

Hyundai Motor Announces IONIQ Brand Dedicated to EVs, Opening New Chapter for Customer-Centric EV Experiences
Hyundai’s dedicated EV brand IONIQ embodies company’s smart mobility vision Company aims to offer connected lifestyle experience to customers with IONIQ brand models Hyundai will introduce three innovative IONIQ EV models over the next four years, starting early 2021 with IONIQ 5, a midsize EV CUV based on the concept ‘45’ IONIQ EV models will be built on the E-GMP platform IONIQ brand embodies Hyundai’s commitment to provide connected lifestyle solutions Hyundai celebrated the brand launch by turning the London Eye into a giant letter ‘Q’ with electric lights SEOUL, August 9, 2020 – Hyundai Motor Company today announced the launch of its new IONIQ brand dedicated to battery electric vehicles, opening a new chapter as a leader in the era of electrified mobility. Under the IONIQ brand, Hyundai will offer customer centric EV experiences centered on connected lifestyle solutions in line with Hyundai’s vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’.
Under the IONIQ brand, Hyundai Motor will leverage its industry-leading manufacturing know-how in EVs to introduce three new dedicated models over the next four years with more innovative models to follow. The creation of IONIQ brand is in response to fast-growing market demand and accelerates Hyundai’s plan to lead the global EV market.
To fulfill IONIQ’s brand mission, Hyundai will combine its current EV capabilities – such as ultra-fast charging, spacious interior, and battery-supplied power – with future innovations that combine design, technologies and services to integrate in-car and out-of-car experiences for a seamless journey.
“The IONIQ brand will change the paradigm of EV customer experience,” said Wonhong Cho, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer at Hyundai Motor Company. “With a new emphasis on connected living, we will offer electrified experiences integral to an eco-friendly lifestyle.”
      Rebirth of IONIQ
Hyundai first introduced the term IONIQ, which fuses “ion” and “unique”, when it announced Project IONIQ, a long-term research and development project focused on eco-friendly mobility. Based on the project, Hyundai in 2016 introduced a vehicle named IONIQ, the world’s first and only model to offer a choice of three electrified powertrain options – hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid and battery electric – within a single body type. Now, IONIQ represents Hyundai’s growing commitment to sustainability and innovation and will be instrumental in achieving the company’s clean mobility goals.
IONIQ brand was conceived to fuse life changing mobility with environmental performance and has so far been instrumental in delivering progress electrified. IONIQ will continue to create a new balance in clean mobility synchronizing eco-products within an eco-system of lifestyle solutions bringing connected living to a new generation.
      IONIQ 5 / IONIQ 6 / IONIQ 7
Hyundai will be launching a range of numerically named EVs under the new brand, with the even numbers used for sedans and the odd numbers for SUVs.
The first model under the IONIQ brand will be the IONIQ 5 midsize CUV that will launch in early 2021. IONIQ 5 is based on the concept EV ‘45’, which Hyundai unveiled at the International Motor Show (IAA) 2019 in Frankfurt as a homage to its very first concept car. IONIQ 5’s designers took inspiration from the past and integrated it with cutting-edge parametric pixels, a unique design element that Hyundai designers will continue to incorporate into future IONIQ models.
In 2022, Hyundai will introduce IONIQ 6 sedan, which is based on the company’s latest concept EV ‘Prophecy’, unveiled in March; followed by IONIQ 7, a large SUV in early 2024. Prophecy’s iconic exterior design is characterized by its aerodynamic silhouette of perfect proportions.
Likewise, IONIQ vehicles’ designs will have a common theme of ‘Timeless Value’. The vehicles will be inspired by past models, but they will be a bridge to the future.
      E-GMP platform
IONIQ brand models will sit on an Electric Global Modular Platform, known as E-GMP, that will enable fast charging capability and plentiful driving range.
The EV-dedicated platform will allow Hyundai to reimagine the vehicle interior as “smart living space” with highly adjustable seats, wireless connectivity and unique features such as a glove box designed as drawers. The platform paradigm shift will extend into the user interfaces that will be simple, intuitive and ergonomically designed to help occupants feel at ease.
      Strategy 2025
Hyundai Motor Group recently announced that the group aims to sell 1 million units of battery electric vehicles and take 10 percent share to become a leader in the global EV field by 2025.
Under Strategy 2025, Hyundai Motor Company itself aims to become the world's third-largest automaker of eco-friendly vehicles by 2025, with 560,000 BEV sales in addition to FCEV sales.
The launch of the IONIQ brand dedicated to EV models reinforces the company’s commitment to clean mobility and reflects its ongoing transformation as a Smart Mobility Solution Provider with zero-emissions solutions.

Happy birthday, Landis!  Hope it was a good one.  Again, it would have been my dad's birthday ... and Napoleon Bonaparte's.  (Both of them were height challenged.)
I'd be going to Mario's on that beachfront boulevard in Galveston to pig out at their Italian buffet.

So I did a thing. I have wanted one of these for years. I managed to find a 2013 Avalanche with just 12,800 miles on the odometer. It’s very well loaded and practically perfect in every way. Very very happy with it!
