Fisker Ocean Can Gain 200 Miles Range in 30 Minutes :Comments

The EV startup Fisker will be officially debuting their Ocean EV on January 4th at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.  Fisker has been teasing images of the Ocean for months.

Fisker has also announced that they will be partnering with Electrify America, the charging network born from the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal.  Electrify America is building out a network of 350 kW rapid chargers to be coming online in 45 states by December 2021.  Fisker says that when using those 350 kW rapid chargers, the Ocean will be able to gain 200 miles of range in at little as 30 minutes. The Electrify America network will automatically recognize the Ocean and be set up for automatic payments. Fisker will also be offering a complimentary charging scheme to go with the vehicle. 

The Ocean is a direct competitor to the forthcoming Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E. Range is expected to be around 300 miles under ideal conditions from its 80 kWh battery. On the roof is a full-size solar panel that is said to be able to add 1,000 miles of range to the vehicle per year. Fisker is said to be working on solid state battery technology that would increase range to 500 miles and allow for charges in minutes. 

Fisker claims the Ocean will be the most sustainable vehicle built with many recycled and vegan materials inside. The Fisker Ocean will be offered primarily through leasing rather than purchasing. Pricing for a lease is expected to start around $379 per month after a deposit of $2,999.  The Ocean is expected to go into production at the end of 2021 with full production commencing in early 2022.

Will be interesting to see if they deliver on all they are promising on this auto.

Will be interesting to see how the spec evolves and changes for charging. CEC is at 350kW of charging where Nissan CHAdeMO V2.0 is at 400kW (400A x 1kV) though on their web site (https://www.chademo.com/activities/protocol-development/) is that CHAdeMO is working with CEC on the new 900kW charging standard that could become the new global XFC or Extreme Fast Charging that would allows solid state batteries to charge in minutes much as some folks have stated Gas is better cause of the minutes it takes to fill a tank.

So everybody on here knows the charger is in the EV, so it dictates what the car can pull as far as kW and Amps that the charger in the EV can handle. So the 350 kW charging station is really just a big switch to bring the power to the EV and the onboard charger then communicates to the charging station how many kW's and amps it needs or can handle.

Another issue with slamming this kind of amperage to the batteries will significantly reduce the life of the battery cell thus reducing the range the EV will have. The original Blink Network DC Fast Chargers were 60kW 200 amps Max and they were pushing close to full capacity to our fleet of Nissan Leafs with the 45kW charger and CHAdeMO plug from the 480v 3 phase 200 amp dedicated service of DCFC charging stations. Nissan Leaf EPA range was 100 mi. per charge but Real World range was closer to 75-80 mi. per charge when new, but after just a few years of pushing that high amperage to the battery packs the range was reduced to 60 mi. or less. Chevy Spark EV for the West Coast and SW area of the U.S. was also in the fleet using either a Level 2 240v Single phase charging station connecting the 7.4 kW charger or the 50 kW DCFC charger using the J1772 Level 2 plug or the SAE Combo plug which seem like the better plug for DCFC that GM, BMW, MB, VW have all used over the larger cumbersome industrial size CHAdeMO plugs that Nissan and Mitsubishi use(d).

So we should keep in mind that these Extreme FC's will significantly reduce the range much quicker. Hopefully these manf's like Fisker have made the battery packs easy to swap out like Tesla has because they will need it. It's a good thing Li-ion batteries that EV's use are fairly "clean" batteries for recycling in that they don't have the harmful acids or other chemicals in them, mainly precious metals copper, magnesium and platinum is some which also makes them more expensive. Li-ion battery manufacturing has improved and prices have come down, but they are still pretty expensive.

      CES 2020 has been a busy place this year with more auto companies showing of prototypes and finally production ready auto's than ever before. We have seen so much including the latest in super dense solid state batteries for the EVs to motorcycles and bikes.
      This year we now get to see the latest competition to Tesla and Rivian in a well funded California / China based EV auto company called NEURON EV. This company has a swiss army knife of a truck/suv auto as well as a Semi truck that they say is going into production in 2020.

      The truck which is seen here in Silver has a sister truck that was running around the streets which is the following Black T-One.

      The cool thing about this modular truck is that is can be more than a truck, a tractor, a van. there are no limits to how one can configure up this beast of an EV.

      The seat options are an interesting take as you can go like how Tesla showed their Semi with a center driving position as a base 3 seat configuration of 3 captain chairs, or a single drivers captain chair and a bench seat behind for 4 people and go from there to cover a wide range of colors, materials, etc. in customizing your auto. 
      While this company is looking at this modular truck and semi for the US, in china they will have many more auto options including their V.E.G.A. or Versatile Electric Grand Automobile.

      The company has great plans and while they have only two models for the US market, China will get many more that includes a medium duty truck, a bus, a MAP or Multipurpose Autonomous Platform focused on shipping yards, a HUB or autonomous transportation auto, in addition to the car, semi and truck.
      NEURON EV has not released any details about their hp / torque other than to say class leading at this time. Two wheel drive and All Wheel Drive will be the choices folks will have and talk of a base 300 mile range battery pack. More details are to come later this year.

      The Volkswagen brand is on track to introduce 34 models globally in 2020.  While some, like the ID.3, will be new to the portfolio, others are variants of familiar faces with many of those being electrified. Much stricter emissions rules come into effect in Europe starting January 1st and will force every company that sells on the continent to rethink their lineups.
      For Volkswagen, that means that most of their internal combustion powered vehicles will gain an available hybrid powertrain. Volkswagen says they will be introducing hybrid versions from the Golf to the Tiguan, to the Touareg. There will also be a number of cars coming that aren't hybrids or EVs. The next generation Golf is coming to Europe in 2020 with GTI, GTD, R, and Wagon variants to follow, though not all will make it to the U.S.. The Atlas will receive a refresh and the Atlas Cross Sport goes into production soon. Over in Europe, VW will be launching the T-Roc Cabriolet, the Arteon Shooting Brake, and Tiguan R.  Plus there will be other announcements coming for the brand.  With that in mind, these 34 vehicles are just for the VW brand and don't count what Audi, SEAT, Skoda, are up to. So there is likely to be even more in the pipeline.
      This whole push is to help get the Volkswagen brand to a 4 percent to 5 percent operating profit for 2020.

      BMW unveiled the Concept iX3 at the Beijing Motor show in April of 2018.  The overall look of the crossover is somewhat conventional, but with the traditional kidney grille being closed off for aerodynamic reasons and special aerodynamic wheels.
      The production iX3 will be rear-wheel drive only and have a peak rating of 286 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. All of that power comes from a single motor. The motor is BMW's fifth-generation eDrive powertrain developed solely in house. BMW says that the technology used in this motor is scalable and thus can be used in different automotive segments. 
      The battery is a 74-kWh pack that is capable of powering the iX3 for 273 miles on the European WLTP cycle (EPA rating will be lower).
      The iX3 will be built in Shenyang, China through a joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive starting in 2020.
      Once the iX3 goes on the market, it will be BMW's first vehicle to be available in gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric drive configurations.

      It's not possible to message you.  At least, it wasn't possible to do that last summer.  So I'll post it here.  I had a crazy layover back in June at PHL ... for about 8 hours ... and wondered how far into NJ you were from Philly.  What I did is get the PHLash day pass and did the self-guided tour of Center City before heading back to the airport.  I stayed too close to the center because of time. I actually wasted time by going into South Philly.  I wanted to venture out onto the Main Line and see Villanova.  That rail line was included on the pass I bought.  I had to manage my time because of the late afternoon flight to the Coast.  Cheers.
