Here's how the Chevy Cavalier was the king of badge engineering

Recommended Posts

I have to disagree with this assessment, the J-Body was a Knight at best.

To find the King of badge engineering you have to start with K.... K-Car to be exact.

Can anyone think of a platform that carried more body variants?  (Sedan, 2-Door sedan, sports coupe, mid-lux sedan, lux sedan, convertible, wagon, mini-van, mini-truck)

The only thing I can think of that would come close would be the VW MQB.

If you consider global platforms, the GM T-body was quite diverse in body styles and badges.   3dr hatch, 5dr hatch, coupe, 2dr sedan, 4dr sedan, 3dr wagon, pickup, sedan delivery/panel van.   In the US it was limited to Chevy Chevette, Pontiac 1000, Buick Opel, and Isuzu I-Mark, but worldwide T-cars were also sold as an Opel, Vauxhall, Bedford, GMC,  Holden, Saehan, Daewoo, Grumett, Aymesa, and as an Isuzu and Chevrolet in many markets...

Interesting! I didn't know they made trucks and vans out of that.

Here's the GMC Chevette from South America---2dr sedan, Grumett pickup from Uraguay,  and from the UK, the Bedford Chevanne and Vauxhall Chevette.  The Vauxhall Chevette definitely resembles the US Chevette, same greenhouse but with smaller bumpers and Euro lights.

The J body was also available in Vauxhall, Opel and Holden variations---with some body styles not seen in the US like a 5dr hatchback.   Can see the similarity to the US J-body in the 4dr's roofline.   These are Opel Asconas.
