1989 Pontiac Grand Prix SE: Regular Car Reviews

Pontiac always seemed to blow it with their most pimped out trim model for any model, like this one.  Or the SSEi or most trimmed out Bonneville, for example.

The prior year, when released in 1988, this was Motor Trend's Car of the Year.

It looked fine as a coupe.  It drove very nimbly compared to its predecessor.  The top of the dashboard - except for the IP pod - coming down from the windshield befit a sporty car.  The sedan was a miss, in my opinion.  They got sedan right during the next two generations of GP.  The front end of this first W-body was unmistakably Pontiac.

They also had some screwy engines in this car.  The 2.8 V6 was dismal and soon gone, and the 3.1 V6 became the mainstay.  They even put in the 3.4 V6 and a high performance 4 cylinder in this generation.  The only one of these that was "bread and butter" normal and in it for the long haul was the 3.1.
