Chevy Aveo may get competition from Ford

Edmunds

DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford Motor Co. is considering a proposal to sell a Mexican-built small car in the U.S. in model year 2008.

The automaker's dealers are demanding a vehicle priced below the $14,000 Focus, according to Automotive News. Rival Chevrolet imports the Aveo subcompact from Korean affiliate Daewoo, with prices starting at around $10,000.

Ford currently builds a small four-door sedan based on the European Fiesta subcompact at its plant in Cuatitlan, but the vehicle is sold primarily in the Mexican market. It also builds the Fiesta hatchback and a Fiesta-based crossover, the Ecosport, in Camacari, Brazil, for the South American market.

The automaker may shift production of the next-generation Ecosport to Mexico in late 2007 or early 2008, sources tell Inside Line. But Ford has not decided which Fiesta derivative — sedan, hatchback or crossover — would be most appropriate for the United States. Nor has the company finalized pricing strategies.

Those names could never be used in the U.S. All I think about is a little, boxy, 50HP deathtrap.

Fiesta seems to be the most likely from what I've read. It's nothing I would ever buy, but Ford has a huge gap to close below the Focus and this should do the trick. The Fiestas in Europe are supposed to be pretty decent vehicles, so I wonder how the Mexican ones will be.

People really don't know the Fiesta name here. They do, however remember the Festiva.

That's the car that makes everyone look stupid driving it.

Very RX-7/Daewoo Lanosish in the rear, read: dated. If you chisel out the design, though, that would be quite hot.

I don't get this with the Edmunds AND Automotive News journalists-if its going to ber built in Mexico, then it only leads me to think one thing for the passenger car. Of course its going to be the Fiesta! Is it that hard for them to make a logical conclusion? That Puma was a beautiful car, it was killed after 2002 I believe.l The Fiesta comes as a 3-door hatchback coupe and 5-door hatchback sedan, and as a 4-door notchback sedan in South America. Hopefully all three body styles are coming here. Edited by Mule Bakersdozen LS

The Fiesta is a fabulous little car... it's so far ahead the Aveo, I wouldn't even say they're competitors.

It should be the 3- and 5-door, and it should definitely be called Fiesta. The four-door sedan thing is overdone in this country. And there's no afterlife for sedans that small...

Like GM's Chevette, Metro, T1000, (Daewoo) LaMans, and Vega.

A "value" edition of a Focus would cheapen the name, even more. Edited by Chicagoland

LeMans is hardly a 'damaged' name like the others. No one even remembers the Daewoo LeMans except for the dozen people that still drive them.

Stil it's enough it may never be used again. The 60's GTO overshadows the name so much, no one thinks of it as a "LeMans with an option package". Edited by Chicagoland

The old Fiesta that was imported here had a rep as an extremely fun car to drive. The new one is much more attractive than the Aveo, inside and out. It also makes the Honda Fit look dumpy. Come on Ford, bring it here!

The current Fiesta is very nice..I've seen them up close in Europe..the design is similar to the larger Focus. The Focus C-max MPV and Fusion (Fiesta-based MPV) would be nice to see here also.... With gas prices at $2.50-3.00/gallon now in the US, maybe quality small cars will make a comeback....

The Fiesta 3-door looks good. I actually wouldn't mind owning this. There are very few Fords I can say that about (and the Stang isn't one of them). The European Focus is another... I hope Ford offers both here. BTW, Anyone know how much horsepower the ST 2.0 150 CV has? If it's 150... I feel stupid. :P

More attractive than the current Aveo, maybe...compare it with the new concept, just for kicks.

They can't bring that new Aveo here soon enough. It makes the current model look totally outdated and wimpy.

Oh God, let it be a hatchback. A car that small needs all the extra space it can get. Plus, sub-compact sedans just look stupid. So do most compact sedans, now that I think of it.

The Festiva looked like an aborted Yugo. Always hated that Kia turd.
