    Hi there! I'll admit writing this feels somewhat awkward as I really don't like talking about myself. Most of the time, I'm churning out news stories and reviews for various places. But this is somewhat important. Next week, I'll be starting a new job with JATO Dynamics as a Specifications Researcher. Basically, I'll be digging into the various information about features, options, and other information on new vehicles. This may seem somewhat odd to be moving from a writing position to doing a bit of research, but it actually uses a lot of the skills and knowledge that I have gathered from being a freelancer. Also, I've been feeling slightly burnt out in terms of the writing. I've noticed that it has been taking me slightly longer to get various pieces out, along with doing anything that is sort of creative and not sounding like a MadLibs. Now for the big question, what does this mean for Cheers & Gears? For now, I'll be taking a bit of a break from writing. I won't be giving up the ghost, but not doing a constant stream of news that I have been able to do since going freelance full time since 2012. I'll still be getting various news pieces, along with reviews and the odd opinion piece up. But I hope this break allows me to recharge and get back on writing somewhat more consistent and creative. I just want to say thanks to you, the members and readers of Cheers & Gears for somehow being able to put up with my writing for quite some time. It has been fun and something I enjoy, even when the thread somehow goes off the rails.

    Dodge is the everyman brand Chrysler is the premium brand like a cross between Buick and Lincoln. Fiat - kill in the US Alfa - Merge with Maserati Maserati - Ultra luxury brand Ram - Trucks Jeep - just be jeep.

    I think the real tragedy is that the Explorer will drive how the Blazer looks.... Get what I mean? It's like Ford took Alpha and turned it into a crossover. With 3 rows. GM...where are you? Oh in Europe, selling bikes. Did you know that Kia started out as a bicycle company?!

    Cheers and Gears has a policy of no political talk on the boards, but it's impossible to do the traditional review of the year's significant events without mentioning some of the actions of the federal government that so permeate the news and our lives. Those who get their delicate sensibilities easily offended are urged to skip this post and go elsewhere, such as link. That said, here are some of the things that happened in our country: The deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history occurred in Parkland, Florida in February. Teenagers became vocal activists, in stark contrast to timid politicians, and reignited the gun control debate. “America’s Dad” Bill Cosby was sentenced to 3 to 10 years for sexual assault in September. That same month the confirmation hearings for Judge and beer-lover Brett Kavanaugh furthered the national discourse on sexual assault. The mid-term elections in November resulted in 40 House seats turning from red to blue and ending one-party rule that had no checks and balances to the executive branch of government. The occupant of the White House is incapable of speaking the truth but instead speaks what he wants to be the truth. The actions of the self-proclaimed stable genius seem to be designed only to further his political base or to punish his perceived enemies. Advice is not taken from experts in the field but instead by morning talk show hosts and radio personalities. The lack of response to the October brutal killing of U.S. resident and Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi ordered by the Saudi crown prince known as MBS showed that moral authority has been abdicated and replaced by the bottom line and dictator envy. Immigrant children of families fleeing hostile regimes were separated from their parents and placed in chain-link cages in detention centers. The ongoing Robert Mueller investigation into Russia hung over the entire administration and netted more than 30 indictments or guilty pleas. At the end of the year, one third of the federal government was shut down over funding the southern border wall. The Camp Fire in California leveled the town of Paradise in November and killed more than 80 people. It was the worst U.S. wildfire in the last 100 years. California’s Governor Brown proclaimed that massive fires were the new abnormal as wildfires ravaged all parts of the state after years of drought. Brick and mortar retail continued to take a beating. Toys R Us, under the crushing debt of a leveraged buyout, shut down in June.. Sears declared bankruptcy in October and was on the verge of liquidation by year end. Prominent passings included Arizona Senator John McCain, 41st President George H.W. and former First Lady Barbara Bush, actor Burt Reynolds, physicist Stephen Hawking, singer Aretha Franklin, actress and director Penny Marshall, Microsoft’s Paul Allen, evangelist Billy Graham, writer Tom Wolfe, and playwright Neil Simon. In the automotive world, Ford announced in April that it was killing off traditional cars other than the Mustang and a Focus Active model that was later canceled because of tariffs. The range of electric vehicles continued to increase from having denser cells in batteries and more cost-effective battery production, but no breakthrough battery technology, such as solid-state batteries, has yet been introduced. Jaguar introduced the relatively inefficient I-Pace, EV, and many more luxury EVs from the likes of Audi, Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz will be coming to market soon. The Faraday Future EV, which was expected to cost close to $300,000 and be built at a former Pirelli tire factory in Central California, appeared to be dead after a major backer in China who had pledged $2 billion pulled back. However, at the end of the year it was back alive after a settlement was made with that investor. The march towards fully autonomous vehicles continues, with Tesla claiming that the technology is ready for Teslas less than two years old. Waymo introduced driverless ride-hailing in Arizona with modified Chrysler Pacifica Hybrids. In March Waymo had announced purchasing 20,000 Jaguar I-Paces by 2022 for driverless ride-hailing. In November, the Chevy Volt was killed with the federal tax credit becoming halved with GM meeting the milestone of selling 200,000 EVs. The Volt was a groundbreaking vehicle that did not meet sales projections, and the current generation was cramped and not what SUV-buying masses wanted. Unfortunately the rumored crossover successor does not appear it will become a reality. The large Chevrolet Impala, Buick Lacrosse, and Cadillac XTS and CT6 were also killed. The not quite a flagship CT6 was competent and attractive but never caught on with consumers. The groundbreaking Super Cruise will live on in other vehicles though. With these vehicles being canceled, GM is closing five factories in Ohio, Maryland, Michigan, and Canada. In December, Carlos Ghosn, the CEO of Renault and Nissan who saved Nissan, was jailed for financial misconduct on allegations that he was enriching himself through accounting fraud. His family feels that there was scheme to remove Ghosn because of his desire to merge Renault and Nissan, a move that is unpopular with some in Japan. On a personal note, I still have not been spending much time on the boards because life has kept me busy in other directions. My personal transport mode of choice remains my human-powered road bike, and my household still has two fully electric vehicles, though one will soon be departing at end of lease. That car will be sorely missed even though it is considered a compliance car to meet California’s EV mandate. It was one of the best vehicles I have ever owned, and I plan to have a write-up here in a couple of months. And finally, here are some of the automotive highs and lows of the past year in the 17th Annual Edition of Cheers and Jeers: Cheers to Elon Musk, despite his erratic behavior, including smoking pot during a radio interview, insinuating that a rescuer of the flooded Thai caves was a child molester, and claiming that he had the means to take Tesla private, and thus raising the stock price but resulting in a $20 million fine, for Best Save by being able to deliver Tesla Model 3 vehicles as promised and keeping the company solvent. What helped was putting together an assembly line in a tent in the parking lot. Elon Musk also started building a network of tunnels in Los Angeles by his tunneling company known as The Boring Company as a way to avoid surface congestion. Cheers to Ford for Best Revival by bringing back the Ranger after an absence of 8 years. Full-size pickups have gotten too big and expensive, and mid-size trucks hit the sweet spot for many buyers. The Ranger will come only with a turbo 4 when it goes on sale early in the year, which may limit its appeal. It will soon be followed by a reborn Bronco. Cheers to GMC for the Best Innovation, the MultiPro tailgate on the new Sierra. The ingenious bed extender and built-in step is elegant in its operation. Jeers to GM for Worst Eco Move by having worse fuel economy in several variations of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra despite a weight loss of up to 450 pounds in the brand new trucks. Even the first 4-cylinder in a full-size pickup, quite the bold move, has lower MPG than its predecessor V-6.. Cheers to Lincoln for Best Resoluteness by remaining relevant building on the success of the Navigator with the new Aviator, rechristened Nautilus, and suicide-doored version of the slow-selling Continental. Once thought to be relegated to second-tier luxury car status, there is no sign of slowing down. With the Ford Division purging of almost all cars, it is unknown what will happen to the Lincoln MKZ and Continental sedans, but it would not be surprising to see them go. Jeers to Worst Styling Sin for any vehicle with a so-called floating roof with a partially blackened rear pillar. Some of the worst offenders are the 2020 Kia Soul and the GMC Terrain, which has a tiny window between the C and D pillars to prioritize style over functional visibility. Almost as bad are all the oversized front grilles filled with solid black plastic, which demonstrate a lack of styling imagination. The most distinctive parts of vehicles are now often the lighting. Cheers to Hyundai and Kia for making the Best Affordable EVs with more than 250 miles of range. The Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro EV, and Kia Soul EV will sell for around $30,000 after the $7,500 federal tax credit. Jeers to Nissan for the long-range Leaf E-Plus being a No Show at the Los Angeles Auto Show as had been planned. It has been speculated that the vehicle was pulled because of the Carlos Ghosn situation, but Nissan is letting itself be overshadowed by other EVs, and the lack of liquid-cooling for the current Leaf remains a concern for the longevity of the batteries.     I rarely post non-manufacturer "concept" art... but this was just dead sexy. Cadillac could totally pull this off and make a coupe with actual distinction over something like the CLS or 6-series jellybeans.

    I would love it if GM had a conquest rate of 66% on ANY of their vehicles; ideally all GM vehicles would have such a high conquest percentage. Lincoln seems to be doing some really good things with the new Navigator.

    Interesting you say that. We saw a Telluride at the mall last night and I was pointing it out, saying it was on our shopping list. And my partner said, "But it's a Kia, I didn't think we liked those". I said, "We do now". I got an eye roll.

    While the first quarter Mustang sales were down, Ford still was able to sell almost 17k of these sport coupes. MB sold only slightly over 15k GLC crossovers. When the product is good, it sells.

    Chrysler is in the sale volume tent as Acura & infiniti and it's 25% higher than volvo. No way that's 'miserable' volume unless those other premium brands are also. Are they? I agree with DD; we read certain people claim Lincoln was "a dead brand" but all it took was product to revive it. Chrysler has far greater potential than fiat or alfa romeo has, it just needs the right product.

    EVs are coming like it or not. It will take some time until they are really common, but I see more and more electric vehicles on the road in US and Europe and more and more manufacturers starting to work on EVs extensively. As soon as more EV will be available on the market and as soon as prices will come down to a more affordable level the market will explode. The new generation of young people that used to plug in and charge their smartphones, tablets and laptops will embrace it quickly and without hesitation. They feel more familiar with charging their gadgets than dealing with smelly gas, oil and grease. The new generation is more eco conscious as well which makes electrics more attractive to them. EVs require less maintenance as well which a lot of people will love.

    For $52k or so I would take following vehicles over the Blazer (that only few that come to my mind) Jeep Grand Cherokke, Trailhawk with optional HEMI engine 360hp, - $45k Ford Edge ST, 335hp, performance brake package and other options - $48k Acura MDX Sport Hybrid, 321hp - $53k Audi SQ5, 349hp - $52k

    Worst post ever....ever....by you folks from Jersey....obviously Both Ford and GM need a nitro-methane fueled quad turbo V twin for the Aviator and XT5...and this thing needs eight Turbos on a three cylinder variant of that same design. Would win over the Harley guys and the Drag racing guys both...as well as suburban shoppers in the heartland. Because somewhere in the black forest with elves and Elvis an Benz engineer is designing a similar power-plant. And we know if people don't ape the Alpha dog in the room...the wreath and crest, the Blue oval and the Ram all three will be gone in three to five years. Just sayin...

    The PowerWagon is a true off-road adventure vehicle. I've been in the passenger seat while the RAM rep was driving it full force taking leaps off hills with all 4 wheels off the ground. The power wagon has a remote detachable anti-roll bar, giant shocks, giant ground clearance, and a hugely strong steel frame that is used in the same trucks capable of towing 35 thousand pounds. No, the Rivian is not in the same class. It's barely in the F-150's same class. I look at it as a Honda Ridgeline EV.

    Quite frankly I’ve seen some bonehead moves in the auto industry over the last 35 years.. but this one might just take the cake. I’m not gonna speak on crazy comebacks that didn’t get enough attention and they crashed and burned like the Oldsmobile debacle.. and how GM was gonna rename the company Aurora.. put out class leading cars like the Aurora, Intrigue and Alero.. then killed the division. We won’t talk about the super cool Trofeo Toronada.. or the bend to tree-huggers with killing Hummer instead of simply merging it with GMC. Naaaah.. I’m not gonna bring up the fact that they killed the unanimously voted best sports sedan Chevy SS.. but instead of saying “hey We have this great new platform for mid and fullsize vehicle in Alpha and Omega.. we could merge the almost as great Impala with this vehicle.. give it AWD options and engines from 4-8 cyclinders and absolutely STAB the market.” Hell they could have even went the opposite way and simply given the Impala all the options of the XTS from start, and detuned the engine for argument sake. I won’t even whisper about the fact that they had all of us luxury shoppers wishing and waiting for a full size RWD/AWD Cadillac that absolutely made us proud.. gave us one.. then turned around and gave it a super V8 engine as we had begged them for.. and hen they killed it!!! OH Wait.. That’s exactly what I’m gonna talk about. This morning I took my 2016 CTS-V to the dealership for a simple Recall procedure. No parts were exchanged, just a reprogram I’m told. The recall was for the steering module. All in all I dropped it off at 9am and they called me at 12p to let me know that it was complete. Of course I wasn’t able, nor willing to go back there to pick up my beautiful Rose. I had meeting all day, not to mention they loaned me a pristine, well equipped Black Raven 2018 CT6 Premium Luxury with Super-Cruise and a 3.6L V6. The Drive: I have driven the CT6 before, but not once had I ever driven a 3.6L for anything other than a quick test drive. The engine I’m most familiar with is the 3.0lTT, which was not on the menu today. I do have to say that if I were in charge of Cadillac’s engine choices, the 3.6L would not be in any of their cars. I say this for superficial reasons only. As a way of differentiation... I believe that Cadillac should only have forced induction offering. What that means is that in a CT6, a car coming in with a 122.4 inch Wheelbase, 204 inches long and curb weight varying from 3700-4400lbs, a 3.0LTTV6 (404HP) would be the base, and the upcoming two iterations of the 4.2L TTV8 would be its mid (500HP) and top (550HP) engine choices. All that being said.. the 3.6L actually moves this vehicle around quite well with a mere 335HP. I mean really well. That’s coming from a guy who dropped off a 650HP mid-sizer before hopping in this humongous automobile. And speaking of which. Driving the CT6 even with just 335HP, and all that length, I never felt as though I were driving a big car. Take a drive in an LS460, S-Class, 7series, or fat ass Audi A8.. U actually feel like U are driving a big car. No the case with the CT6. I almost felt like I was still maneuvering my CTS, a car that is almost 8 inches shorter. Super-Cruise: Wow. Check out my video. This is something else. I will say that GM lawyers were definitely consulted on this, but even with their certain input, the tech really works.

    honestly, RWD platform, 400hp v6, nice styling inside and out, this is an unexpected big win for Lincoln and Ford. And it will fund the next cop car/SUV chassis. My op of Ford is down the last few years but they did good with this one. May make the Cadillac XT67 look like crap possibly if it is lacking 400hp or a good dynamic chassis or LAVISH interior.

    I have looked at the video and studied these two cars. These are my thoughts only... GM clearly has not fixed Cadillac. There is a huge problem. I thought about the changes in the lineup. All they did was drop XTS and replace it with XT6 crossover because this is what sells. XT6 just like XTS appeals to the same segment of buyers. They replaced CTS and ATS. They said that was not happening. They did. They go by different names( CT4 and CT5). They have three sedans instead of four. XTS was too close to CT6 and put the squeeze on CTS. At least XTS had a bigger trunk unlike the small trunk on CT6. They still have not fixed the fundamental problems of the CTS and ATS. I checked out the dimensions on the CT4. It is as big as a downsized 1986 Buick Riviera. They at least got the c pillar right on CT4. They still clearly have not let this Euro aspiration thing go. They need to stop being ashamed who they they are, and use the heritage and history to rebuild Cadillac. GM has the strong heritage and does not use it to rebuild the entire company. It is like John Mc Elroy from Autoline said: GM is shrinking its foot print globally for the next down turn. They want to act like a smaller company, but they do not realize they are still a large company. They are smaller globally: No presence in Europe, and have left countries they were not selling. That is a good move, but you have got to invest in your brands. GM is scared to take chances and it shows. They cannot depend on China. They need a: Ed Welburn, a Harley Earl, or a Bill Mitchell, a Wayne Cherry, or Chuck Jordan to lead design. I at first thought with the guy that was working for Cadillac whose first name starts with a U who left recently was changing it, that maybe it was a good idea. I do not think so now. It does not say luxury or stand out any longer. It is no different than a Chevrolet emblem. You could put Chevrolet emblems on these two cars and they could pass for Chevrolets. That Cadillac emblem/ crest is missing something. Even the one from the 1950's said "luxury" They need to bring the wreath back or the V or make them emblem more detailed. Right now it does not say luxury. It says "cheap or mass market" It is sad when a company favors Chevrolet for everything and it shows. Too many brands have suffered because of Chevrolet. People thought oh, kill brands and it will solve the problem. It has not and GM still is doing the same thing and making the same mistakes. This is getting old. They did not give Oldsmobile this much time to turn around. That was unfair. GM should engineer top down and not bottom up. What is good enough for Chevrolet is not good enough for the rest of GM. They should invest and change how they think. The people who post here know what Cadillac is. GM does not know. Cadillac is majestic. It is stately. It is luxury. It stands apart. It has features you should not find on Chevrolet. It has styling to stay you have arrived. CT6 is a good start, but it is not complete. That c pillar on that car does not say Cadillac. It says Toyota, Audi or other six window design c- pillar cars. You look at CT5, you do not immediately think Cadillac. You think Saturn or Chevrolet. It should not be that way. Cadillac needs to lay off all that black trim. Again.. it says cheap. They have taken the Escala concept styling and put it on the CT4( small) the CT5( medium) and the CT6( large). That philosophy does not work. That is what BMW does. BMW is in trouble right now too. If Pontiac was here and they said these two cars were Pontiac, no one would have an issue because that is what they would expect from Pontiac. If they said they were Holden, no one would have an issue. When you look at Cadillac, you should want to own it or drive it. It should be nice to look at. The only vehicle that has stayed true to Cadillac's mission is Escalade. They need to look at that vehicle and build on that. They need to learn who they are again. They need to start using real names. The letter and number thing is not working. Just stop. I am just expressing how I feel. I do not work at GM, but it is clear to the outside what needs to happen to fix Cadillac. I want GM and Cadillac to be great again. What will it take? What must happen?

    Well, I finally found what I’ve been looking for, in my price range. This past Saturday I picked up a 2016 Lincoln MKC. 37,460 miles, $21,000, 2.3T engine with AWD. Upgraded real leather seats in dark brown and cream that I absolutely love. It had auto-high beams that I was skeptical about how well they flip off then back on and they’re surprisingly fantastic. As soon as any headlights show up in front of my they flip off, be it just over a hill or a mile ahead of me. Neat. Classic Ford, I already have to hit up my local dealership because the exterior thermostat is reading waaaay off(like -35F) therefor also throwing off the temp thst throws out the HVAC. It’s still under warranty and if it wasn’t I’d be dealing with the dealership I bought it from, well I’m doing that anyway incase it becomes lemon-worthy. I want them to know about it right away. They also legally had to instal the front plate bracket.. they said they were going to do it and I asked them not to but because IL is a front plate state they weren’t allowed to let it leave without the bracket on. I’m going to see if they drilled the bumper or if it was mounted through the grille this weekend to see if I can take it off.

    Funny when MT and C&D criticizes Cadillac or GM vehicle or losses a comparison, than "they don't know $h!", "companies paid them". But as soon as GM vehicle wins a comparison, than suddenly they become legit. The logic of fanboys moves in mysterious ways ...

    My kid has been working on this for about a year. 1998 Chevy 1500. He worked for a few years cutting grass and doing odd jobs to get the money for a truck and all it would need. So far he has put a new engine in it all on his own (me observing and advising when needed) He is now replacing all brake lines and brakes. Once that is done itll be road ready. His plan is to then save for some body panels for new paint and some interior work As far as finance goes his mom and I could pay for it all, but he is willing to put the work in to getting his own and wants to know how to fix stuff. So it's a win win

    Limited is the perfect combination, and the best lease in the lineup. Everything is standard, and now for 2019, the further updated flush 8.4" UConnect and Blind Spot are as well. Mom wanted nothing to do with in car Nav after the mess of a MyLink radio in the Traverse (and Terrain before it) so the 7.0" with CarPlay has been perfect for her. Better gas mileage than any car she's had...and rips through the 8 speed, flawlessly. This is a package, 8 years in, that never seems to age vs. the competition.

    Hello everyone. Don’t mind me. Just felt like I should step in here and point out that the owner of an FCA product (that has had, according to NHTSA, six recalls including one that could cause the vehicle to stall out) is making fun of another automaker for quality issues.

    Went to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum at the Cleveland History Center today...they have a nice eclectic collection, incl. a group of brass era cars, some of which are brands that were built in Cleveland like Peerless, Jordan, Chandler, Baker. A little bit of everything, incl. airplanes, a Goodyear Blimp gondola, a couple small boats, etc. They had a Hemi Satellite and a '65 GTO: Some 40s-50s cars:59 Chevy, Cadillac Fleetwood 60 Special, 57 T-Bird & Mercedes 300SL Some pre-war cars:Airflow, '39 Lincoln-Zephyr, Auburn and a Cadillac A couple stainless steel Ford one-offs:36 Ford & '66 Continental Some concept cars:AMX, Dodge Avenger, and Jeep Compass An 80s-90s exhibit... And a couple early Baker electrics and an EV-1.

    I guess since reg gave an update, I should as well. I still love this thing. I don't get the hate for minivans. I now understand why my Dad was so infatuated with them when I was younger. They are just an all around great vehicle. It essentially does everything an SUV/CUV can do but it does it better with the exception of towing. Both of my kids love it and think it is the best vehicle ever. I'd blame that on the entertainment system but we don't let them use it unless we are going to be in the car for more than 30 minutes and even on short trips they would rather take the van than my CTS. That's no knock on the CTS. More of a testament to the van. It now has close to 12,000 miles on it. No issues to speak of. One oil change and other than that, no trips to the dealer. It gets pretty good gas mileage for such a big vehicle. See the attached pic. Note that this is not typical but it can do this in the correct conditions. Having calculated other tanks, I'd say you can knock 1 MPG off what the VIC is showing but still impressive none the less.

    The LC is probably way more reliable and cheaper to maintain in the long run... Probably just means production started in 2007 for the 2008 model year...

    I had a random thought when I saw a Yukon Denali pass me on the opposite side of the street today... I was stunned to realize how phoquing huge that Yukon grill is. Then I started laughing hysterically all by myself thinking about it.

    Heavy key chains break Chevy Cobalts. It is such a wonderful car aside from that though, after decades of wonderful examples of GM FWD cars that would make anyone a fan.

    There is a guy over at GMAuthority who says Cadillac just lost him as a customer because they are going to stop making a big Cadillac. He owns a 2010.. I said 2010.. a 9 year old Cadillac and he says this.. THIS IS HOW IDIOTIC PEOPLE ARE. I responded with: My name over there is MiatsoCi No offense.. but GM/Cadillac built 2 large sedans for U.. for the last 3(2016-2019 CT6) and 6(2013-2019 XTS) years. Both have won gobs of praise. One is literally a superior version of your DTS, while one is a direct competitor to the S550 (3.0LPlatinum CT6) and U still haven’t bought.. maybe.. they just tired of waiting. BTW.. there are still new XTSs and CT6s on the showroom floor til the end of 2019… a year that hasn’t even happened yet. My name is Cmicasa the GreatXvX.. and I approve this message LOL
