  1. We are currently on our way to Ann Arbor in the 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI we are reviewing. My first four days with the Passat in swamped and gridlocked Pittsburgh driving netted me 26.9 mpg. While that is lower than the EPA city rating, all non-hybrids get 0 miles per gallon while idling in traffic. Over the next three days, we will be doing almost exclusively highway cruising across Northern Ohio and up into Michigan. You have two chances to win one or two of two $10 fuel gift cards. Your first chance is by guessing my fuel economy on tonight's trip (Pittsburgh to Ann Arbor) without going over. You get a second guess for the fuel economy for my trip from Port Huron Michigan to Pittsburgh PA on Monday evening. Winners will be announced Tuesday, August 14th at 12pm Eastern time. To enter, simply reply in the comments of this thread with your two guesses. For example "Friday= 48.9mpg, Monday = 43.2mpg". Here are the rules: You must be a registered user of CheersandGears.com to enter, guest posts are disqualified. You can sign up easily clicking this link and even use your Facebook or Twitter account to speed things along. No purchase or paid subscription is necessary to win. Entries are taken in the order the server time stamps them. If two people guess the same number, the number with the earliest date/time stamp wins. Volkswagen of America is not in any way affiliated with this contest aside from providing the test vehicle. Entries must be received by 9 am Eastern, August 14th, 2012 Good Luck!

  6. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 2, 2012 According to research firm Baum and Associates, American buyers are taking a liking to diesel vehicles. Through June of this year, 61,214 diesel-powered vehicles have been sold in the U.S., an increase of 27.5%. That number might not sound like a lot, but sales of diesel vehicles are steadily climbing. From April to June, Diesel vehicles saw increases in sales ranging from 14.4% to 28.2%. This news comes in the face of the high price of a gallon of diesel compared to gas. AAA reports that the national average cost of a gallon of diesel is $3.780, compared with $3.521 a gallon for regular gas. "Despite some volatility in the auto market, clean-diesel auto sales have increased in 22 of the past 23 months with double-digit increases in 20 of those months. And diesel auto sales increased by more than 30 percent in 12 of these months," Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, said in a statement. Source: Kicking Tires

  8. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 3, 2012 Back in March, Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös said the automaker is looking into alternative powertrains. Already, electric power has been kicked out due to the range and charging time being unacceptable. Now, it looks like another power option has been kicked to the curb. A source tells Autocar that Rolls-Royce asked their customers what they thought about diesels. The response was a resounding no. “A diesel has a lot of low-end torque. But customers are not going to cop it. It’s the perception of compromise. They wouldn’t entertain the idea. They said absolutely not, don’t bring diesel anywhere near a Rolls-Royce, we won’t buy it,” said the source. Source: Autocar William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 10. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 16, 2012 With the last generation 3-Series and current X5, BMW brought back the diesel engine to their lineup. A 3.0L inline-six producing 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. That could send a 3-Series to 60 MPH in 5.3 seconds and a X5 in 6.9 seconds. However, the concern is not performance, but fuel economy. BMW realizes this and has a pair of new diesel engines on their way to show it. This past Friday, Automobile senior editor Jason Cammisa tweeted out that BMW would introduce a 2.0L, single-turbo, inline-four diesel engine producing 180 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque. There is also a second diesel engine on its way. BMW confirmed a twin-turbo, 3.0L diesel inline-6 coming out the same time as the inline-4. No details on horsepower and torque at the moment. The two engines will come with eight-speed automatic transmission, and use a urea-based selective catalyst reduction (SCR) system to meet the strict U.S. emission standards. BMW isn't saying which models will get the the four and six-cylinder diesel engines. Source: Twitter, Automobile Magazine William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 12. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 25, 2012 Back in January, Chrysler made the announcement that the Jeep Grand Cherokee would be getting a diesel engine in 2013. We thought that would be for the 2013 model year, but it appears that it will be for 2014 Model Year. Now that seems like some bad news, but don't fret. According to Automotive News, Jeep will shorten the 2013 Model Year Grand Cherokee to make way for the 2014 Model Year to come out as soon as January. A source says the diesel engine that will be used in the Grand Cherokee is the same one used in Europe; a 3.0L diesel V6 from VM Motori delivering 241 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Also coming in the 2014 Grand Cherokee will be a ZF eight-speed automatic. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required) William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 14. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 20, 2012 Seeing a pickup truck fill up with diesel is a common occurrence. Seeing a Ram 1500 filling up with diesel is not. A new spy shot gotten by the folks at Automotive.com shows a Ram 1500 getting some diesel into its tank. The truck had been seen testing in the Southern California mountains. As we've reported before, the engine of choice for the Ram 1500 diesel will be a 3.0L VM Motori turbodiesel V6. The same engine will used in the new Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel.
