  1. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 8, 2013 Besides getting a new name in 2014, the JX35 (soon to be QX60) will also be adding a new hybrid model to be shown at the New York Auto Show later this month. The QX60 Hybrid will use a 2.5L supercharged four-cylinder mated to a 15 kW electric motor, which will be rated at a combined 250 horsepower, only 15 horsepower short of the non-hybrid QX60. Like the non-hybrid model, the hybrid will use a CVT. A lithium-ion battery pack sits underneath the third-row seat. Infiniti says the QX60 Hybrid will return an estimated 26 MPG combined; a 24% increase when compared to the normal QX60. Source: Infiniti William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. Press Release is on Page 2 Infiniti Announces New Hybrid Version of 2014 Infiniti QX60 Premium Crossover 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid set for world debut at upcoming New York International Auto Show Features Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid® one-motor / two-clutch system adapted to front-wheel drive/all-wheel drive Inspired design offers anticipated combined fuel economy of 26 miles per gallon, which is expected to be best-in-class for any 7-passenger luxury crossover – without any reduction in passenger or luggage space Offered with all-wheel drive or front-wheel drive, joins Infiniti lineup in summer 2013 with a premium over non-hybrid QX60 of about $3,000 M.S.R.P FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Infiniti Motor Company Ltd. today announced that a new gasoline electric hybrid model will join the 2014 Infiniti QX60 premium crossover lineup in the United States this summer, following its world debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show. With the addition of the new QX60 Hybrid to the Q70 Hybrid (currently available as the M Hybrid) and previously announced Q50 Hybrid, Infiniti will have a trio of advanced Direct Response Hybrids for the 2014 model year. The new Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is projected to realize 26 miles per gallon fuel economy (combined city/highway driving) – a 24 percent increase over non-hybrid QX60 models and is projected to have best 7-passenger fuel efficiency in the segment.* Most significantly, it does so with absolutely no compromise of performance, interior roominess or cargo space compared to non-hybrid QX60 models. The new Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is projected to be priced about $3,000 USD above the non-hybrid models, providing reduced emissions, enhanced fuel economy and extended driving range without a major price premium. Launched in early 2012 as the Infiniti JX35, the Infiniti QX60 has quickly become one of the most popular vehicles in the expanding luxury crossover market. It is also one of Infiniti's best-selling models, second only to the current Infiniti G line, and has grown Infiniti's presence in the premium market by capturing family buyers with its advanced 7-passenger/3-row seating and stunning exterior and interior styling. The new QX60 Hybrid will be powered by a 2.5-liter supercharged engine and 15 kW electric motor connected to an advanced CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Net system horsepower is estimated at 250 horsepower. Based on technology found in the Infiniti M35h Hybrid, the QX60 Hybrid's Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid® system uses a compact Lithium-ion battery and electric motor to provide supplementary power through its one-motor/two-clutch system. The result is a delivery of power equivalent to the 3.5-liter V6 but with 4-cylinder fuel economy. An Intelligent Regenerative Braking system partially recharges the battery during vehicle braking. In addition, with use of the compact Li-ion battery located under the 3rd row seat, the QX60 Hybrid maintains its flat rear floor for easier passenger access to the rear seats and no impact to cargo room. The QX60 Hybrid will also offer a wide range of available advanced technologies, such as Backup Collision Intervention (BCI) and Around View® Monitor. More information about the 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid will be available following its official media unveiling on March 27. The 2013 New York International Auto Show public days run from Friday March 29 through Sunday April 7 at Jacob Javits Center.

  3. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com February 19, 2013 Infiniti's IPL lineup was designed to compete along the same lines of other high-performance divisions from other automakers. However the two models that have come out wearing the IPL have been lukewarm to say in the least. That appears to be changing. Infiniti is looking to their new corporate partner Red Bull Racing to help out on the development on future models. The two will collaborate on the upcoming Q50 IPL. While the new model might not offer the performance of lets say the BMW M3, but it should offer more performance and sportier handling when compared to the normal model. 5. By Drew Dowdell January 24th, 2013 Yesterday we reported that the Infiniti Q60 coupe would not go on sale until the 2016 model year. It turns out we were half right. That Q60 coupe arriving in 2016 is going to be first coupe to be based on the new Q50 sedan revealed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit earlier this month. However, in order to speed up the process of renaming the entire model lineup, Infiniti is performing what is likely to be the least costly mid-cycle refresh ever; the current G37 coupe will be renamed Q60 for the next model year and then soldier on into 2015 before being replaced. Infiniti wants to complete the renaming process that all of the current Infiniti models will go through by this summer. Infiniti vigorously defends their renaming scheme, but what do you think? Is it wise to through out all brand equity, especially that of your most well known models, in the quest for uniformity? Album: 2014 Infiniti Q50 Live 12 images 0 comments View full article

  7. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 23, 2013 Infiniti's new naming nomenclature has the G sedan turning into the Q50 and the G Coupe/Convertible into the Q60. While we've seen the production version of the new Q50, we didn't know when we'll see the Q60. In a interview with CarAdvice.com.au, Infiniti's global boss, Johan de Nysschen said a production version of the Q60 will arrive in 2015/2016. “I think the coupe is an important part of the platform. Most certainly we are working right now on a coupe derivative of the car [Q50] … known at the Q60." So why the long wait for the coupe? “But, you know, there are a lot of priorities for us. I really want to look at expansion of the entire portfolio. So we probably need to prioritize a little bit the volume segments. So the coupe we can probably expect two and a half to three years down the road,” de Nysschen said. de Nysschen also hinted at a high performance version of the Q50/Q60, saying "someday in the future we will be able to offer more high performance versions [of Q50] than we have today... the dynamic capabilities of this platform are very significant. It can handle far higher power than the engines we are using at launch." Source: CarAdvice.com.au William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 9. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 13, 2013 We're just a day away from the Detroit Auto Show starting and the leaks have been pouring out. Four automakers: Honda, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen have had their showings prematurely revealed within the past week. We'll start with Honda and their Urban SUV Concept. The concept is based on the Fit and has a sporty and dynamic SUV profile. Next is the Infinti Q50 (Yes, the successor to the G Sedan) which was leaked by Infiniti Canada on their site before being taken down. Luckily someone saved an image of the site and shared it. The Q50 has a similar design to the current M (or should I say Q70) with a large front grille, upswept headlights, and a hood featuring flowing ridges and peaks. Mercedes-Benz has plans to reveal the new CLA at Detroit. That didn't stopped someone from leaking a shot of the production CLA earlier this week. The picture shows the production model is much like the concept shown last year. Finally there is Volkswagen who will be showing a concept seven-seat crossover alongside the Passat Performance concept. The leaked picture shows the crossover having a mix of Volkswagen Toureg and Audi Q7 in the design. We'll have information and pictures when these vehicles are officially shown at Detroit (or Geneva in the CLA's case) this week. 11. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 19, 2012 When Infiniti announced on Monday night that they would be changing their nomenclature to Q and QX, the outpouring of rage and sarcastic comments were overwhelming. Today Johan de Nysschen, Infiniti's president sent an open letter to the press and its fans explaining its decision. de Nysschen explained that Infiniti will be going on a product offensive in the next few years and and found itself in the situation of finding alphanumeric combinations that weren't already taken by another automaker. de Nysschen also said that the current nomenclature is causing confusion in new markets that Infiniti is entering. "Our new customers are unfamiliar with the brand and struggle to understand our range hierarchy. Is a JX above or below an FX? Where does an EX fit? What is the relationship between G and Infiniti M? Research confirms the majority of newcomers to our brand consider the naming to be somewhat arbitrary and confusing." said de Nysschen. There's one part of the letter that has everyone in the automotive media buzzing and dreaming. de Nysschen references a "new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it (M56 which uses a V8), using a potent charged induction V6". Interesting if a bit random example to use. But for de Nysschen to reference horsepower and a 'potent charged induction V6' has caused everyone to go into a tizzy about a M or I should say Q70 sedan with a GT-R powertain. We'll wait and see if that comes to fruition, along with seeing if Infiniti's name change is a good idea. William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. He can be reached at william.maley@cheersandgears.comor you can follow him on twitter at @realmudmonster. Press Release is on Page 2 A Message from Johan de Nysschen to Infiniti Owners and Fans Dear Infiniti fans: We love you dearly. And we know you love the brand. Which means it’s only natural that you may feel surprised by the announcement that we plan to change our nomenclature philosophy. No one likes change. It was a tough decision. We like our current model names as much as you do. But we had no choice but to change. Let me explain. 1. We are embarking on a massive product offensive, and these new cars need names. There are no suitable combinations of Alphanumeric naming options remaining that are not already trademarked by another automaker. In order to expand our line up with the fascinating new models we are developing, we must create a more flexible nomenclature philosophy. 2. Our new advanced technology engines under development will be smaller, lighter, more fuel efficient yet more powerful. And we will introduce some exhilarating performance machines in the future. I’m sure you will agree, it would be a bit odd to have a powerful, luxurious and refined V8 powered Infiniti M56, then position a new high-tech 550+ horsepower performance flagship for the Infiniti M range above it, using a potent charged induction V6, but then call it Infiniti M30, which we would be obliged to do, following our current naming logic. 3. Infiniti is becoming a global brand now. We are already active in almost 50 countries, the majority only very recently. Our new customers are unfamiliar with the brand and struggle to understand our range hierarchy. Is a JX above or below an FX? Where does an EX fit? What is the relationship between G and Infiniti M? Research confirms the majority of newcomers to our brand consider the naming to be somewhat arbitrary and confusing. 4. Infiniti owns the naming assets of Q plus double digit, and QX plus double digit. And it is a permanent part of our heritage. So the solution is pretty straightforward – use Q for cars, QX for crossovers, and double digits in increments of ten, to denote hierarchy, linked to the price point of the model, not size and not engine displacement. And no, we wont call all-wheel drive models Q50X or QX50X. The fact that a model may feature four-wheel drive will be indicated by specific badging describing this feature on the car and is not part of the model name. The really exciting implication of all this is that it prepares the way for the introduction of several fascinating new models above and below the current line up, and a wider range of powertrains including some truly stunning performance cars in our future. So there is only good news for all Infiniti fans around the globe. We are working very hard to bring you great products, a great brand and a compelling ownership experience. And we are really confident you will love the new Q50. It’s simply that good. Warmest regards, Johan de Nysschen President Infiniti Motor Company Limited

For 2012, sales increased 14 percent to 15,310 units, its best year since the full-size luxury SUV was introduced into the Infiniti line in 2004. The all-new Infiniti JX saw sales of 2,708 in December, its best month since it went on sale in March. For 2012, the 7-passenger luxury crossover had sales of 21,674, making it the second best selling vehicle in the Infiniti line. 14. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 17, 2012 From the Redundancy Department: Infiniti announced tonight that starting with the 2014 model year they would introduce a new nomenclature strategy that would have their passenger vehicles wearing the Q prefix and crossovers and SUVs wearing the QX prefix. The first vehicle that will wear the Q prefix will be the replacement for the G Sedan, named the Q50, to be shown at Detroit. Why is Infiniti going forth with Q, a prefix that hasn't been used since the departure of the Q45 in 2006. The answer is simplicity. According to Infiniti, going with the Q and QX prefixes is simpler than the current alphabet soup (G, M, EX, FX, JX, and QX). Umm how? Let me demonstrate the new naming convention against the old one. G Sedan = Q50 Sedan G Coupe/Convertible = Q60 Coupe/Convertible M Sedan/Hybrid = Q70 Sedan/Hybrid EX Crossover = QX50 Crossover JX Crossover = QX60 Crossover FX Crossover = QX70 Crossover QX SUV = QX80 SUV Qonfused? (Sorry.) But how will Infiniti show what engine it has? The Q50-37? The Q50 V6? More random letters? Hopefully Infiniti can make this clearer in the near future. The first model to carry Infiniti's new Q badge will be the Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013. The premium automotive brand will see its model range simply prefixed either by Q – for sedans, coupes and convertibles, or QX, for crossover and SUV models. Each model will be further identified by a double digit representing hierarchy within the range. This strategic change reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness as it embarks on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of the Infiniti portfolio. Commenting on the revised naming philosophy, Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited, said: "Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45 – Infiniti's first iconic flagship product in 1989." Infiniti's new nomenclature strategy will be implemented in logical stages within the existing product range, as 2014 model year variants are introduced. The brand's future plans include a range of next-generation Infiniti models that will carry Q and QX badging from the outset. View full article

  19. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 4, 2012 Hybrid vehicles usually fall into two completely different categories. The first category is filled with vehicles whose main purpose to use a hybrid powertrain is to eek out every drop of gas, which typically means they lack the fun to drive factor. The second category is the opposite; vehicles which use their hybrid powertrain, using a smaller engine, to produce the power and fuel economy of a larger engine. There are a few automakers who have figured out how to balance these polar opposites with a hybrid powetrain. The latest automaker who thinks it has got the balance correct is Infiniti with the hybrid version of the M sedan. But did Infiniti get it right? Next: The Outside Exterior The M Hybrid follows the same design doctrine of other M models. The front end of features a long hood that curves downward from the middle and rise back up before sitting next to the front fenders. A large, rectangular chrome grille and a set of projector headlights don the fascia. Around the side, the front and rear wheel wells are pushed out to cover the standard eighteen-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The roof line slopes down to the trunk where in turn it gradually rises back up to the lip of the trunk lid. The short rear end has a curved trunk lid, a chrome bar hiding the trunk release and rearview camera, and a set of polished exhausts. The overall look of the M Hybrid is very daring and elegant to my eyes. I would put it in the same category as the Jaguar XF and Lexus GS as being my favorite mid-size luxury sedan designs. Next: The Inside Interior The M Hybrid’s interior is an exercise in the details. That’s very evident when you look inside and notice how the metal trim flows along with the leather and wood trim in the dash and door panels. Also, the M Hybrid doesn’t skimp out on the stitched leather, using a good amount on the seats, door panels, and dash. The wood used in this M Hybrid was the optional Japanese White Ash wood trim which has a silver powder finish to make it really stand out. All of these little details make the M Hybrid feel very special. For the front seat passengers, the M Hybrid comes equipped with supportive, powered leather seats. Back seat passengers sit on a very comfortable leather bench seat. Legroom is very good throughout the M Hybrid, while headroom is somewhat tight for backseat passengers due to the sloped roof. Trunk space is also on the tight side, measuring 11.3 cu.ft , due to the large lithium-ion battery pack. Our Infiniti M Hybrid came equipped with two massive option packages. The $3,800 premium package adds a eight-inch touchscreen, hard-drive based Navigation system, 9.3 GB music jukebox, XM NavTraffic and weather, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, Bluetooth audio streaming, climate-controlled front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The other option package on our test vehicle was the $3,350 Deluxe Touring Package which adds the Japanese White Ash wood trim, semi-aniline leather-appointed seats, suede-like headliner, forest air system, power rear sunshade, and a 5.1-channel, 16-speaker Bose sound system. Both packages are very much worth it as they add some needed features for the class and add on to the specialness of the M Hybrid’s interior. Next: Power! Powertrain The heart of the M Hybrid is Infiniti’s Direct Response Hybrid system. The system is made up of a 3.5L all-aluminum V6 producing 302 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque, a 50kW electric motor producing 67 HP and 199 lb-ft of torque, and a lithium-ion battery pack. Total output of the Hybrid system is 360 HP. How the M Hybrid delivers its power depends on the circumstances and how much the battery is charged. Leaving a stop with the battery fully or half charged, the M Hybrid will enter EV mode. Using only the electric motor, the M Hybrid able to sustain speeds in urban areas for a good distance. When the battery gets depleted, the 3.5L V6 seamlessly kicks on. If you need to merge onto a freeway or make a pass, the V6 and electric work together to provide more than enough power to get you through. The seven-speed automatic transmission does a very good job of making sure it is in the right gear as the situation demands. Also, the shifts are very quick and smooth. The M Hybrid also has Infiniti’s Drive Mode which allows the driver to change the throttle response, engine and transmission behavior via a knob in the car. Four settings are available: Snow, Eco, Standard, and Sport. Snow: Softens throttle response even more to reduce wheel spin in snowy conditions Eco: Softens the throttle response to help improve efficiency Standard: Sets throttle response and shifts points to provide a balance between responsiveness and fuel efficiency Sport: Increases throttle response and holds gears longer when driving aggressively Fuel economy for the M Hybrid is rated at 27 City/31 Highway/29 Combined. Our average for the week was 27 MPG, mostly on suburban and rural roads. Next: The Drive Ride & Drive The M Hybrid’s suspension is the same one used on the standard M37 and M56. Double wishbones are used up front and a multi-link setup in the rear, with stabilizer bars at both ends. The only difference between the regular M and the Hybrid is a set double-piston shock absorbers that have been tuned for the M Hybrid. The ride is soft and comfortable, no matter the road surface. Road, wind, and engine noise are kept to a minimum, making the M Hybrid a perfect long drive companion. But what if you want to have a little bit fun? The M Hybrid is a very willing partner. The suspension is very surefooted on curvy roads. Steering is very good, providing good feel and response. One surprise is the M Hybrid’s brakes. Most hybrids exhibit the mushy pedal syndrome, which doesn’t inspire much confidence and could cause you to have a longer braking distance. The M Hybrid differs from this by having a brake pedal that doesn’t feel as mushy, which gives you more confidence and shorter stopping distances. Despite the extra weight and soft suspension tuning, the M Hybrid can be very fun. Visibility for the M Hybrid is good for the front and side. Rear visibility is a little bit tricky due to the smallish rear window. Infiniti has included a rear-view camera as standard equipment, making it a bit easier. Next: The Verdict Verdict So has Infiniti figured out the balance of performance and economy with the M Hybrid? In a word, yes. Infiniti’s Direct Response Hybrid system delivers the same performance as a V8 and delivers some impressive fuel economy numbers. Add in a well-appointed interior and a distinct exterior shape, and the M Hybrid stands on its own. Aside from some rear headroom and trunk space concerns, the M Hybrid is one of the best arguments that choosing a hybrid doesn't mean you have to choose more power or better fuel economy; you can have both in perfect harmony.
