  1. Tesla announced that beginning today, the standard version of the Model 3 with a base price of $35,000 is available for order. The base Model 3 has a top speed of 130 mph and a 0-60 time for 5.6 seconds. Additionally, Tesla will be introducing a Model 3 Standard Range Plus with 240 miles of range, top speed of 140mph, 0-60 of 5.3 seconds, and some interior upgrades for $37,000 before incentives. Tesla claims that these upgrades give customers 9% more range for 6% more money. Existing Model 3 drivers will be receiving firmware updates that will increase the range of the Long Range rear-wheel drive Model 3 to 325 miles and the Model 3 Performance top speed to 162 mph. The firmware update for all Model 3 cars will give an approximate 5% power increase. In the same announcement, Tesla revealed that they will be closing most of their retail locations with the exception of a few high traffic outlets and moving to an online-only sales model. Customers buying a Model 3 will now be able to try the car for 7 days or 1,000 miles and return it for free. Tesla claims that this will ease customer concerns about being able to test drive the vehicle before purchase. By moving to an online-only system, Telsa claims that it will be able to reduce prices 6% on average. Tesla is moving to a Same-Day and in some locations Same-Hour service system where Tesla comes to the driver rather than the traditional method of vehicle service. Tesla is also guaranteeing everywhere in every country they sell in.

  3. Polestar, a sub-brand of Volvo, is taking direct aim at the Tesla Model 3 with its just unveiled Polestar 2. Polestar says it will be the first EV to compete directly against the Model 3 in the marketplace. The MSRP of the Polestar 2 is listed at 39,900€ or about $45,395 at today's exchange rate. Polestar will start with a Launch Edition model at 59,900€ ($68,150) will be the lead off model for the first 12 months of production. The Polestar is a dual-motor 5-door fastback with a 78kWh battery that allows for a 310 mile range on the European cycle, or 275 miles when rated by the US EPA. Built on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture, the battery is built into the floor of the chassis to increase structural rigidity and reduces noise. The dual-motor all-wheel drive setup in the Polestar 2 produces 408 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque and launches the car to 62 mph in under 5 seconds. Charging time was not released, but Polestar is partnering with the largest public charging networks to provide a hassle free charging experience. Charging point locations are accessible through a phone app or the in-car electronics. Drivers' phone can also act as a key. Thought into progressive design is shown inside and out. Pixel LED headlights and proximity lighting show a unique welcome sequence. The new Polestar logo is projected onto the panoramic sunroof. The interior is constructed entirely out of vegan materials.   5. Elon Musk revealed in a series of tweets that the Tesla Model Y compact crossover would be revealed at an event in their LA Design Studio on March 14th. Detailed specs, pricing, and even test rides will be available. Musk says that the Model Y will be about 10% larger than a Tesla Model 3 and expects pricing to be about 10% more. The Model Y will share battery sizes with the Model 3 and because of increased size and weight will get slightly less range. Musk indicated that the Model Y will look a lot like a Model 3 and will not have the falcon wing doors found on the Model X. Last week Tesla announced that the base model $35,000 (before destination charges) version of its Model 3 sedan was now available and that it would be closing most of its retail locations to focus mainly on online sales.

Detailed specs, pricing, and even test rides will be available. Musk says that the Model Y will be about 10% larger than a Tesla Model 3 and expects pricing to be about 10% more.   7. The EPA has released the estimated range rating for the 2020 Kia Soul EV and the results look good. With its 64 kWh battery, the Kia Soul EV should be able to travel 243 miles on a single charge. That's down 15 miles from the more aerodynamic Hyundai Kona EV with the same battery and up 4 miles from the slightly larger and heavier Kia Niro EV. It also manages to beat the Bolt EV with its 60 kWh battery and the Nissan Leaf E+ with its 62 kWh battery. Most importantly, it handily beats the 111 mile range the 2019 Kia Soul Electric was capable of. The Soul EV is capable of using DC fast charging to get to 80% charge in as little as an hour. Level 2 charging from empty will take 9 hours, while charging on a standard household plug will take 59 hours from zero. Buyers of the Kia Soul EV will want a Level 2 charger at their house. The Soul EV packs an electric motor rated for 201 HP and 291 lb-ft of torque, a substantial upgrade from the prior model's 109/210 respectively. While we don't have pricing yet, we do know that the Soul EV will be a limited release model, selling mostly to drivers in California.   9. Kia plans to electrify the Geneva Auto Show with a new all-electric concept car. They released a teaser image today ahead of the show on March 5th. The concept is said to be a design to make the heart beat faster. While Kia kept in mind consumer concerns for driving range, they also are focusing on performance and an emotional design. In the teaser image, we see a bold front end design with a sculpted hood and LED headlight surround. Tiny antenna on either side are likely rear facing cameras in place of rear view side mirrors. Strong wheel arches give the vehicle a sporty stance. We'll have more from Kia when the car debuts on March 5th.

  11. The Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S were both shown at the LA Auto Show in November, both claiming a top of the line range of 400 miles. The folks over at Rivian Forums have uncovered a patent filing for an extended battery for the Rivian R1T. The drawing shows a bed mounted battery with connections for coolant and electrical flow. In addition to providing more energy, the R1T would detect when the auxiliary battery was installed and adjust braking, suspension, and steering to compensate for the extra weight. Rivian uses a skateboard style architecture which places the entire powertrain and battery system in a platform below the vehicle and then builds the body on top of it. This allows Rivian to have nearly a free hand in designing the body and interior above the powertrain. Rivian will offer 3 standard battery packs for the R1T: 105-kWh: 402 horsepower, and 413 lb-ft of torque, range of 230+ miles 135-kWh: 754 horsepower, and 826 lb-ft of torque, range of 300+ miles 180-kWh: 700 horsepower, and 826 lb-ft of torque, range of 400+ miles Rivian claims the R1T will get 80 percent charge in just 15 minutes when using a DC fast charger and a full charge in eight hours using a Level 2 charger. Rivian says the R1T will begin at $61,500 after Federal Tax credit - likely putting the base at just under $70,000. Production is expected to begin in late 2020 at a plant in Normal, Illinois. The company recently landed $700M in investment commitments, lead by a significant investment by Amazon.   12. Detroit Auto Maker Rivian landed $700M in investment commitments lead by Amazon. Rumors were swirling earlier this week that Amazon and GM were in talks to provide investment that valued the company between $1B and $2B. GM is not part of this round of investing, but that does not mean GM is out of it just yet. Rivian plans to introduce the R1T pickup (shown above) in 2020 with the R1S SUV following later. Four more vehicles are planned starting in 2025. The vehicles are set to be produced at Rivian's plant in Normal, Ill., a former Mitsubishi facility. Amazon's interest in Rivian includes using Rivian's technology to support its own logistics and delivery services. GM's interest comes from CEO Mary Barra's commitment to a Zero emissions future.   13. Ford isn't shy about making its ambitious plans on electrifying their lineup known to the world. But the automaker had decided to raise the stakes with plans to build an all-electric F-150. “We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series — battery electric and hybrid,” said Jim Farley, Ford president of global markets at the Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference. Car and Driver was able to get a Ford spokesperson to confirm Farley's comment. Farley didn't provide any details or a possible timeline as to when the F-150 EV will debut. Car and Driver is speculating that we could see this model with the next-generation F-150, possibly expected to appear sometime early in the next decade. It could be facing some tough in the form of the Rivian R1T that was revealed at the LA Auto Show in November. It promises a max range of 400 miles and max towing capacity of 11,000. But the automaker had decided to raise the stakes with plans to build an all-electric F-150. “We’re going to be electrifying the F-Series — battery electric and hybrid,” said Jim Farley, Ford president of global markets at the Deutsche Bank Global Automotive Conference. Car and Driver was able to get a Ford spokesperson to confirm Farley's comment. Farley didn't provide any details or a possible timeline as to when the F-150 EV will debut. Car and Driver is speculating that we could see this model with the next-generation F-150, possibly expected to appear sometime early in the next decade. It could be facing some tough in the form of the Rivian R1T that was revealed at the LA Auto Show in November. It promises a max range of 400 miles and max towing capacity of 11,000.   15. Porsche announced this morning that buyers of the forthcoming Taycan will have free charging with Electrify America included for the first three years they own the vehicle. The plan includes 30 minutes of free DC fast charging at any of 484 locations across 42 states. Every Electrify America station will have at least two 350 kW chargers with additional chargers at the 150 kW level. Electrify America has been building a national network of charging stations in metro areas and along major national highways. The average highway distance between chargers will be about 70 miles with no more than 120 miles between charging stations. 17 metro areas will have stations with 5 to 10 chargers each. The Taycan features one of the fastest charging rates using 800 volt technology to add more than 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes through its Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. In addition to the Electrify America network, all of Porsche's 191 dealerships will have DC fast charging stations installed. Of these, around 120 of these will feature the Porsche Turbo Charging, a proprietary 320kW system that also uses the CCS plug. To supplement the national charging network, Porsche will be releasing a Porsche designed at-home charging system with details to follow soon.

Autocar spoke with Polestar COO Jonathan Goodman at this weekend's Goodwood Festival of Speed. "That will represent the lower ‘bookend’ of our showroom range and, for now, it should give us as much access to the volume end of the EV market as we need," said Goodman. But there is talk about bringing back the Beetle as an electric vehicle. Volkswagen's design chief Klaus Bischoff revealed to Autocar that he has already made a sketch of a possible Beetle EV, but it will be some time before the automaker makes a decision whether to move forward with this or not. Some of this comes down Volkswagen wanting to get the bigger-selling electric cars into production first (see I.D. hatchback and I.D. Crozz) before moving onto the 'emotional' models. “Our duty is to get the volume [ID] models under way. These cars have super-complicated technology and if you do too much, it’s an overload. Then we [can] move into more exotic cars and the field of emotion,” said Bischoff. If Volkswagen does give the green light for a Beetle EV, what could it look like? According to Autocar, the model could grow in size and get two extra doors. “The Beetle of today is a very attractive two-door coupé or convertible, but it is limited in the amount of cars that it can sell because it’s a niche. If you look at MEB, the shortest wheelbase [possible] is the ID [hatchback]. If you took that and did the Beetle on it, you have plenty of room so there’s no compromise in functionality any more. So it could be a very attractive car,” explained Bischoff. Aside from the wild design cues, the Niro EV concept featured a 150 kW (201 horsepower) electric motor and 64 kWh battery pack. Range was estimated at 231 miles. Just a couple of days ago, Kia revealed the production version of the Niro EV. Unsurprisingly, the electric version doesn't look significantly different from the hybrid/plug-in hybrid Niros. The only changes are a closed-off, body-colored grille with a door for charging port; faux grilles on the front and rear bumpers, and LED foglights. The Niro EV features Kia's new electric powertrain that includes an electric motor with a 64 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Overall range is estimated at 450 kilometers (about 280 miles) on the World Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP). Expect the EPA estimate to be slightly lower. There will also be 39.2 kWh battery available that is said to offer a range of more than 300 kilometers.
