  1. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' CEO Sergio Marchionne isn't a fan of electric vehicles, especially the idea of a Ferrari EV. "With Ferrari, it's almost an obscene concept," said Marchionne. A key part of the Ferrari driving experience explained Marchionne was the noise of the V8 or V12 engines. Going with a fully electric powertrain removes something important in the experience. "You'll have to shoot me first," said Marchionne. It is rumored that Ferrari will do more with hybrid technology in their future vehicles as a way of improving fuel economy while retaining the performance the brand is known for. 3. Bentley will be introducing their first hybrid next year with the new Bentayga SUV. But that's not the only alternative powertrain the luxury automaker is looking into. Speaking with Australian outlet Drive, Bentley's board member in charge of engineering, Rolf Frech said they are investigating whether or not to do an electric vehicle. "We are currently in the stage where we are evaluating all the possibilities, but there are so many question marks behind this. I think there will be an answer within the next six months to a year to decide which direction we will go, but of course electric will be a future strategy direction for Bentley," said Frech. One vehicle that could go full electric is the upcoming EXP 10 Speed 6. Frech said the model had a low center of gravity and going with an electric powertrain would offer the instantaneous punch that Bentley wants in a sports car. Frech went on to say the Bentley would have access to Porsche's Mission E platform. "We not only have the ability to use the (Mission E) platform but we can also use a lot of these modules to bring into our car. I think there are big steps coming and what we are doing now is preparing ourselves if these steps make sense then we will go for it," said Frech. In the meantime, Bentley is planning to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain for all of their models in the near future. Source: Drive View full article

  5. German automakers are currently working on competitors to take on Tesla Model S. Case in point is Mercedes-Benz. In an interview with German publication auto motor und sport, Mercedes-Benz's development chief Thomas Weber said they are working on electric vehicle with a range of 400-500 kilometers (228-311 miles) that could be arriving 'soon'. Now this model would use Mercedes' modular platform, which means other models could use this new electric powertrain. This comes at an interesting time for Mercedes-Benz as the relationship between it and Tesla appears to be unraveling. Back in 2009, Mercedes' parent company, Diamler took a 9.1 percent stake in Tesla. The two would work together on some vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric drive. But last year, Tesla removed Diamler from its board. Afterwards, the German company sold off the rest of its shares in the electric car company. 7. Aston Martin is readying their own electric vehicle. Speaking with Automotive News at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Aston CEO Andy Palmer revealed that the British sports car maker will be launching an all-electric version of its four-door Rapide in the next two years. The emphasis on electric cars for Aston Martin is being driven by two key factors; emissions and competition from the Tesla Model S. “If you want to keep making V-12 engines, then you’ve got to do something at the opposite end of the spectrum,” said Palmer. This is important in markets in China where emission standards are becoming stricter for V8 and V12 engines. Also, Aston Martin is going on the offensive. Palmer points to the Tesla Model S and says there is an opportunity for a sexy and powerful electric car to sit above the P90 D, Tesla's most powerful model. “What Tesla clearly shows you is we haven’t hit the ceiling in terms of price. But I think it’s hard, though not impossible, for them as a relatively new brand to keep pushing up and to go into that super premier area,” said Palmer. Palmer did give some details of what he hopes for the electric Rapide: 800 horsepower, all-wheel drive, a range of 200 Miles, and a pricetag around $200,000 to $250,000. 9. Only a couple of days after first reporting about Chevrolet showing off the Bolt concept at the Detroit Auto Show, the automaker has revealed it for all to see. The Bolt is GM's attempt at building an electric car with a 200 Mile range for the price of around $30,000. Styling is a mixture of Spark and the BMW i3 with a large area of glass, and a high beltline. The Bolt's body features barely any front or rear overhang which in turn helps out in interior space. Materials such as aluminum, magnesium, and carbon fiber help keep weight down and improve range. Inside is very spacious with a light color theme which only adds to that feeling. The dashboard has a flowing look and comes with a 10-inch capacitive touchscreen. Unfortunately, GM hasn't released details about the Bolt's electric powertrain or how long it takes for to charge on either 120V or 240V. “The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity. Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. Source: Chevrolet You can sign up to follow all the stories from Detroit here, or follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+. Press Release is on Page 2 Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept Signals Brand’s EV Strategy Affordable, long-range concept builds on brand’s electrification leadership DETROIT – Chevrolet today made a significant statement on its commitment to electrification with the introduction of the Bolt EV concept – a vision for an affordable, long-range all-electric vehicle designed to offer more than 200 miles of range starting around $30,000. “The Bolt EV concept is a game-changing electric vehicle designed for attainability, not exclusivity,” said General Motors CEO Mary Barra. “Chevrolet believes electrification is a pillar of future transportation and needs to be affordable for a wider segment of customers.” Leveraging the electrification prowess established by Volt and Spark EV, the Bolt EV concept is designed to offer long-range performance in all 50 states and many global markets. Drivers will be able to select operating modes designed around preferred driving styles such as daily commuting and spirited weekend cruising, for uncompromising electric driving. The modes adjust accelerator pedal mapping, vehicle ride height and suspension tuning. The Bolt EV concept is also designed to support DC fast charging. “We have made tremendous strides in technologies that make it easier and more affordable for Chevrolet customers to integrate an all-electric vehicle in their daily lives,” said Barra. “The Bolt EV concept demonstrates General Motors’ commitment to electrification and the capabilities of our advanced EV technology.” The Bolt EV concept also pushes the envelope for crossover aesthetics. Its unique proportion, with practically no front or rear overhang, makes the most of interior space and was designed to create a roomy environment for four that feels expansive. Lightweight materials, including aluminum, magnesium, carbon fiber and even woven mesh, complement the design, while driving down the curb weight to help maximize range. Aero-optimizing features such as vented rear fenders also help contribute to range. “Form and function have never meshed so well together,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, GM Global Design. “No compromises were made when it came to aesthetics and the elements that contribute to the Bolt EV concept’s range, resulting in a unique proportion that’s sleek, efficient and obviously a Chevrolet.” The Bolt EV concept’s airy interior ambience is enhanced with bold use of glass all around – as well as a full-length, frosted glass roof with unique, faceted design elements. A high beltline sweeps upward with the D-pillar, culminating in an integrated roof spoiler, for a lean, athletic stance. An advanced nano-composite rear hatch and wraparound rear window give the Bolt EV concept a distinctive appearance and flood the interior with more natural light. High-intensity, efficient light-emitting diode (LED) headlamp and taillamp elements are housed behind jewel-like faceted lenses in which translucent elements illuminate evenly to create the signature lighting effect. Airy, intuitive interior Inside, the Bolt EV concept has a large feel reinforced by generous headroom and legroom dimensions. A flat, flow-through floor adds to the roominess, while a contemporary, light color scheme adds to the feeling of an open, airy cabin and conveys warmth. The cabin’s airy, high-tech environment is reinforced with lightweight, slim-architecture seats mounted on exposed aluminum pedestals that create a floating effect. The minimalist center console “floats,” too, suspended from the front seats. “The Bolt EV concept’s interior is intended as a sanctuary, with materials and technologies that reinforce the airy ambience and help contribute to the vehicle’s overall efficiency,” said Welburn. “It also incorporates technology in a subtler and simpler manner, for a more soothing driving experience – particularly in busy, urban environments.” Chevrolet’s signature dual-cockpit interior layout incorporates easy-to-use technology designed to make the driving experience easier and more enjoyable. It wraps into the door panels and features a frosted and translucent appearance – and a subtle glow at night. The concept’s technological intuitiveness can be accessed via a smartphone with the concept Bolt EV Connect app, which is designed to: Allow a smartphone to perform as the key fob Allow ride-sharing management, including reservations, vehicle location, digital key and even payment processing via the smartphone Incorporate the concept automatic park-and-retrieval technology, which enables the driver to exit the vehicle and tell the Bolt EV concept to park itself – and when errands are completed, the Bolt EV concept can be summoned to return to the owner’s location. A large, color 10-inch-diagonal capacitive-touch screen, with interface features, complements the concept Bolt EV Connect app. It even allows the projection of all the application and other smartphone data onto the screen. 11. Earlier this week, we reported on the rumor that the Opel Ampera was to go away once the next-generation Chevrolet Volt was introduced. Well it seems to be true. Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann tweeted that the Ampera is on its way out. But another electric vehicle will take it place in the future. "After the eventual run-out of the current generation Ampera, we'll introduce a successor product in the electric vehicle segment. Our next electric vehicle will be part of our massive product offensive – with 27 new vehicles in the 2014-2018 time frame. We see eMobility as important part of the mobility of tomorrow and we will continue to drive down costs & deliver affordability," Neumann said on twitter. So what could this new EV be? Autoblog Green speculates it will not be the Chevrolet Spark EV, but something completely different. Stay tuned. Source: Autoblog Green William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 15. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2013 Tesla has apparently gotten under the skin of General Motors' CEO Dan Akerson. As we reported back in July, Akerson created a group to study Tesla and how it could effect the company. Now, Akerson wants to take on Tesla with Cadillac. “If you want to compete head-to-head with Tesla, and we ultimately will, you want to do it with a Cadillac,” Akerson said to The Detroit News. Akerson went on to indicate that he would like to compete with Tesla Model S directly. “But I do think when the (Cadillac) ELR comes out late this year, early next — it’s certainly in the same postal code as Tesla, but now we’re going to move up. It’s not going to be a mass-produced car." Akerson also gave Tesla a bit of a ribbing. “We’ll sell more (Chevrolet) Volts and lose less money on the Volts than they’ll lose on the (Tesla) Model S.” Source: The Detroit News William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears. 17. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 17, 2013 It's no secret that General Motors has been keeping a very close eye on Tesla. Back in July, we reported that CEO Dan Akerson created a group to study Tesla and how it could effect GM. Now it seems GM wants to take Tesla on. According to the Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, General Motors is working on a electric vehicle with a 200 Mile range and a pricetag of $30,000. This information came from GM's vice president of global product programs, Doug Parks. This comes on the heels on Tesla's founder and chief executive Elon Musk announcing a compact electric sedan known internally as Gen 3 due in 2016. This sedan will have a 200 mile range and cost somewhere around $35,000. The big challenge for this new model is the price of the batteries admits Parks. Current battery technology can allow this, but the costs to implement this are too high for the time being. GM hasn't given a possible date of when this magical vehicle will be shown. 21. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 11, 2013 Automakers seem to be having a tough go with electric vehicles. The only way it seems automakers are able to move their stockpile is by drastically cutting the price. We've seen it with the Nissan Leaf which saw it sales jump General Motors hasn't gone down that same route with the Volt, but is offering a number of discounts. Ford looks to be doing the former option with the Focus EV. The Detroit News reports that for the 2014 Focus EV will see a $4,000 price drop. That brings the base down from $39,200 to $35,200. While that should help out the Focus EV, that's still $6,000 more than the base Nissan Leaf. Ford said in a statement the lower price “keeps us competitive in the marketplace.” The price slash is a bit of a surprise since last month, Nancy Gioia, Ford’s director of global electrification said they would not follow in the footsteps of compeitors doing a price cut. “We’re not going to chase down to the lowest price possible — that doesn’t make sense to erode the brand image or the true value of the product,” Gioia said. 25. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 22, 2013 Fiat and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne disclosed during a speech at SAE World Congress in Detroit last week that for every Fiat 500e sold, the company expects to lose around $10,000. “For every 500 electric that we produce even after all the subsidies we will lose about $10,000 bucks a car. Doing that on a large scale would be masochism to the extreme,” Marchionne said. Marchionne disclosed the figure to make a point. He believes that electric vehicles won’t be enough for automakers to meet the new ambitious fuel economy regulations set for 2025 by the U.S. Government. The regulations say automakers have to reach a fleet average of 35.5 MPG by 2016 and then reach an average of 54.5 MPG by 2025. Automakers can earn government credits, which help get an automaker closer to the average, by building hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Marchionne sees this as a problem since the Government is saying hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles are the only solution to this problem. “A number of governments around the world including the U.S. have provided incentives for consumers to purchase plug-in electric vehicles and have provided direct incentives to manufacturers. My fear is that regulators are rushing precipitously into embracing electric vehicles as the only technological solution,” Marchionne said. Instead, Marchionne is urging for “technological neutral” regulation should be encouraged. Source: Detroit Free Press William Maley is a staff writer for Cheers & Gears.
