  1. 2017 Cruze Hatchback Premier (1.4T/6A) Odo - 8051 mi We just took the Cruze on a 1,000 mile road trip (from Baltimore to Myrtle Beach and back) and this was my first extended, in-depth experience driving and living with the car for a week. I'll break down the review into sections if you want to skip around. Fuel Economy (EPA rated 28 city/37 highway): *Premium gas/mobil 1 oil used. Manual recommends regular gas, dexos approved synthetic oil. On our trip, we achieved 39.3 mpg leaving Baltimore and 41.0 mpg coming back, based on the gauge cluster. My wife reports that it's fairly accurate, if optimistic by an mpg. Hand calculation is pretty much out the window because we have to hit 3 different gas stations with wildly different pump shut-offs and then we burn half a tank around town for the week. Sorry, I'm just not that invested when I know we can trust the gauge cluster. We did not hypermile whatsoever, just used cruise control as much as possible. We passed slow traffic and drove aggressively when the situation called for it. No sitting behind slow traffic or drafting large trucks to fluff the numbers. We drove 7-10 over the speed limit, with most of the journey being 65 and 70 mph zones. - From what I can tell, 75 mph seems to be the 40 mpg cutoff. - 60 to 70 mph is the sweet spot for crushing the EPA highway rating. - The gauge cluster's "Best 50 mile average mpg" indicated we set a new high score of 49 mpg. Engine/Transmission 1.4T DI VVT is rated 153 hp/177 tq C&D test numbers for the premier hatchback auto: 0-60 in 7.7 sec, 1/4 mile in 16 @ 84 mph. In my experience, the direct-injected 1.4T provides more than adequate acceleration and feels peppy. The tires will peel out a bit when floored from a stop, and the engine offers strong torque for low-stress highway merging or passing even with 2 people and probably 150 lbs of luggage. I also drove with 4 adult occupants and acceleration remained adequate around town without revving hard. At full throttle, the engine starts getting out of breath above 5500 rpm. The transmission is more eco-tuned than I'd like, but the logic is a far cry from the mess of GM's first 6-speeds. Downshifting to accelerate takes a bit of prodding, but the downshift is drama free with a progressive surge of turbo torque that follows. After 6 hours on the road, we hit stop and go traffic briefly and under 25 mph the transmission tripped over itself a few times noticeably enough for my wife to point it out. Can't really be replicated on demand. Steering/Handling The electric power system in the Cruze has good heft to it, and the predictable turn-in seems to mask the electric numbness. It's easy to drive, which is a comment I found myself coming back to frequently in my thoughts behind the wheel. It's not sporty, but it nails easy driving and commuting. The tires are all-season performance firestone firehawk GTs in 225/45R17 size. They handle securely, but make a lot of road noise in an otherwise quiet car. Michelins or Continentals will make a world of difference. Brakes One of the weak points of the car is the brake pedal. It sits an inch further forward than the gas pedal, which is very awkward in use. There's also too much play between gentle slowing and heavy braking. It feels like you're pushing through the floor to stop quickly. Mechanically, the car has 4-wheel disk brakes, and they stop the car with authority. Pedal placement and feel is really the problem. Conclusion My wife and I really like the car. I keep coming back to the "easy to drive" sentiment, fun wasn't the goal here and I already have a car for that. It's very happy commuting and eating up highway miles at 40 mpg. I was comfortable in the seats for 8 hours of driving, which is very rare. The acceleration power straddles base versus optional engines of other cars like the Civic and Mazda 3 without sacrifice to maximum fuel economy, which is a good balance that hasn't left us wanting. With a set of good tires and perhaps a tune in the far future, this car will be hanging around well beyond the last payment.
  2. Chevy Cruze Hatch vs Buick Encore

My wife's Cobalt Sport is at 140,000 miles and it's starting to nickle and dime her. It's been efficient (29 mpg average mostly highway) with a bulletproof powertrain (2.4L/4A), but it's loud, it's ugly inside, and it's run its course. Besides, it's not fitting of a young woman with a doctorate in pharmacy making good money. Her requirements for her next car were: -small/maneuverable -more efficient with longer range between fill-ups -peppy acceleration (Cobalt had a reasonable 173 hp) -good for highway commuting -decent tech features like good stereo, heated seats, remote start -reasonably nice inside and out -light color interior (tired of burning her ass on cheap black leather seats) She already liked the looks of the new Cruze, but she initially was only considering sedans. Thinking pragmatically, since I already drive a sedan, I suggested she consider a different body style for versatility sake. Memories of dowdy hatchbacks from growing up in the 90s and soccer mom CUVs made her recoil in fear, but I sent her pics of the Cruze hatch when it was unveiled and she made an instant 180 on her preconception. Given her highway commute, I sent her pics of the new Encore and said she had to give it a try. I knew the Buick's quiet tuning and interior would be really appealing in person. She wasn't in love with the tall styling, but admitted it was good looking for a crossover, and the compact size was nice. The Contenders: Chevy Cruze Hatchback Premier Buick Encore Essence Trim
  3. G. David Felt - Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.cheersandgears.com Tesla Officially in Trouble, Business Insider Says! To quote Business Insider final comments on Tesla and the Chevy Bolt: "Clearly, Tesla would be in less trouble if the Chevy Bolt were a bad car. But it isn't. Teslas have always blown me away. The Bolt blew me away for different reasons. I just hope Tesla is prepared to take this into account." Matthew is a Business Insider senior correspondent who covers transportation and as a fan of Tesla was excited to check out a Chevy BOLT as comparison to the Tesla. On a recent trip to california he took time to visit the closet Chevrolet Dealer to his hotel and this is what he found. He states that to borrow Barkley's line, "Tesla is in trouble." You have one of the world's biggest auto companies that is known for killing the electric auto stepping off the sidelines and actually committing considerable resources to building a long range EV where it can afford to lose money on it long term till the market changes. Tesla has 400,000 plus pre-orders, but is burning through cash by the billions and while the launch of the Tesla 3 is near and Tesla still has Sexy much like Apple to an iPhone. Tesla does not have the depth of customer auto experience to pull from and as the author points out, Tesla balance sheet is precarious as it is based on raising funds on a growth story. The author goes onto say that no one will cross shop a Tesla S or X with the Chevy BOLT. They will due to limited options cross shop the Tesla 3 to the Bolt. To pull some interesting statements from the story, the author had the following to say: "I found it more fun to drive than both the Tesla Model S and the Model X, but not the original Roadster, a much smaller vehicle." "The Bolt is plenty fast for most people." "GM isn't going to overwhelm Tesla with Bolt sales. I actually think the Model 3 will greatly outsell the Bolt once Tesla's car arrives. However, it's also possible that if the Model 3 is delayed or is slow to ramp up, Chevy will be preparing a mid-cycle refresh of the Bolt before Model 3 sales start to achieve some major momentum. In other words, GM will always be ahead, and the company — barring another massive financial meltdown — will never stop putting the Bolt up against the Model 3." BI covered the BOLT in follow stories with the next one being more of an official review that starts off with covering the auto with the following statement: "A platform, not business as usual!" From ride-hailing to ride-sharing, self driving Chevy has delivered an auto for the future that gives GM options on how they build and expand their EV lineup. BI took delivery of their white Premier BOLT just before the blizzard that hit NY. Clearly a compact-crossover-hatchback look, design is what the magazine employees felt it was and is. Surprising the BI reviewers was the amount of cargo the auto can hold and how well it handled 4 people and grocery getting. BI states that GM has told them the next addition to the BOLT lineup will be a larger auto that can accommodate 5 or more people. An exceptionally well executed minimalist design that comes with an interior that feels more premium in comparison to auto's this size in the past from GM that felt clearly parts bin cheap. The review goes on to talk about how setting the front seat for a 6'4" tall driver and getting in the back with room ahead of the knees for the same size person is a nice welcome addition to such a compact auto. Heated steering wheel was welcomed by all. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto kept everyone happily connected to their phone while driving. The final statement to quote from the review is as follows: "We were impressed with the Bolt, as a car, as an electric car, and as a mobility concept. In many ways, it is GM's post-bankruptcy masterpiece, a real feather in the cap of CEO Mary Barra and her executive team, who took what the company had achieved with its ill-fated EV-1 back in the 1990s and turned it up to 11. I also flat-out loved driving it. I blasted in and out of New York City twice, rocketed around the streets of Gotham, darting through traffic, and cruised along the highways of New Jersey. I also enjoyed just driving it around the quiet streets of the suburb where I live. The steering is quick and responsive, and the handling is sharp enough to provide the confidence you need when surfing that sweet EV torque. The single-pedal mode is also very cool — I dug not using the brakes at all for extended excursions in my town. After a bit of practice, you get into a kind of Zen state with it. Not a single person asked me about the car, and that can be chalked up to the ho-hum design. But I didn't care. I was lovin' it. Plain and simple, the Bolt is fun." Here is where we have overlap between story #2 and Story #3 which covers the 7 Killer Features: Dual Screens- 10.2" touch screen infotainment center & an 8" drivers console display which are totally customizable. Auto's wireless charging console. BOLT App allowing you to be connected to your auto at all times. Five cameras: front, rear, side mirrors and their 360 camera. 9hr full charge time from a 240 volt charger. 25 miles per hour, faster with Level 3 DC charging. Lane Keep assist feature. Modern Seat design allowing for maximum space inside. Over all these writeups show that GM has delivered a superior auto to the Prius, Leaf, 500e, etc. The future will be bright for the BOLT as GM move the platform forward. 5. G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com 2017 Chevy BOLT's Production Ramping UP Reuters is reporting that GM has decided to ramp up BOLT production at the Orion assembly plant. Currently every fifth car on the assembly line is a Bolt. The Orion plant is capable of building 90,000 auto's a year with a single workers shift. GM has stated a goal of 30,000 BOLTs which does take into account the European model that is also being built here and shipped over seas. Currently the other auto's being built are the gas powered Chevrolet Sonic sedan and hatchback. With sales falling off on the Sonic, this gives room to continue to increase all year long the production of the BOLTs if the public demands them. Reuters does state that GM has confirmed that there car sharing operation, Lyft will be getting many of the BOLTs first at the same time they declined to stated how many pre-orders have been received. Yet GM has increased production implying that demand is much greater than estimated. GM's flexible production line continues to show how easy it has become to build an auto with a gas powered drive train and then on the next auto bolt in the battery pack. They say they could if needed offer some overtime and build on Saturday before they end up moving to a second shift. Growth in America's rust belt.
  6. G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com 2017 Chevy BOLT's First Allocation hitting California Yesterday at hybridcars.com they reported and confirmed a posting at the GM-Volt.com forum by Keyes Chevrolet general manager who stated he has a confirmed 78 initial Bolts being delivered in December. 7. 2017 Chevy BOLT Update

    G. David FeltAlternative Fuels & Propulsion writerwww.CheersandGears.com 2017 Chevy BOLT Update Car & Driver did a ride along on a near production BOLT with Bolt’s chief engineer, Josh Tavel . It was interesting to read that while Tavel stated the BOLT does zero to 60 in 7 seconds, that that drove it said the feel in the butt is that it is faster than that. They also stated that hit feels even faster the the BMW i3. Picture are here of a early run on the assembly line of a Chevy BOLT. These car pictures are our best view of what the production run BOLT will look like and it is looking very nice indeed. Some of the other interesting notes is that Josh is an SCCA Spec Racer. As such he had been very focused on making sure the BOLT is dialed in for the best of both worlds, daily driver and performance junkie. The story had the following to say as they got to take the BOLT out and about in the Detroit area. At 3600lbs, this compact CUV is what the public wanted when GM did their research, not some slick slice through the air Jelly bean car like Tesla, but a CUV. So this pretty much puts to rest the whole airflow thing, as they did their best while giving the public what it has asked for, a roomy, high seat position CUV. Also with 200HP and 266lbs of Torque, the story states that you have a clear choice, put the transmission in D and drive it like any other auto or slip it into L and Drive it normal but enjoy just like the Tesla S a return on regenerative power. What this means is you can get some of the battery recharged driving in the regen mode. Interesting is that Josh says if you drive the full 200+ miles you can get about 40 miles added back into the battery, so then you have a 200+ range plus 40 miles more when driving in L mode using regenerative mode. To quote the Story in regards to steering as many here have always talked about the numb feel in various auto's; " The electrically assisted rack-and-pinion steering is slack-free on-center, quick to respond, and nicely weighted. Walking that fine line between comfort for civilian drivers and engaging dynamics for enthusiasts is no easy feat, but Tavel deserves credit for balancing the two conflicting mentalities." There is plenty more to be said about the auto, an example is that using a DC quick charge, gives you 90 miles of range in 30 min. It is worth clicking the link above to read the story. Over all this has made me even more excited about the BOLT and what it can do for the public. Especially that after a 50+ mile drive in the BOLT, they say that having plenty of space for passengers, personal stuff and a highly congenial attitude makes the BOLT a Joy. I do like the BOLT in White as the 19 Pictures show with a decent interior. If you want to read just how much the BOLT beats the BMW i3, then read this story. Chevy BOLT stacks against the BMW i3 Considering this is written by the folks at BMWBlog, they feel the BOLT was designed to give customers the range of a Tesla but focused on the i3 as it's clear CUV competitor. They also feel that the BOLT is faster than the stated 7 seconds for 0 to 60. They make some other statements and still claim that the i3 is an excellent package for the money. Not sure how they see that as the i3 is 80 miles range compared to the 200+ of the BOLT. Plus looking at the pictures, the BOLT is a superior interior I believe, but then this was written by a BMW fan.
  8. G. David Felt Staff Writer Alternative Energy - www.CheersandGears.com Q4 Shipments of Chevy Bolt to begin According to the Detroit News, North America President Alan Batey production is moving forward and shipments are being setup for deliveries to dealers nationwide beginning Q4 2016. Well ahead of when Tesla will have out their Tesla 3 sedan supposedly. Produced at the company’s Orion Assembly Plant in Orion Township GM is very positive on the Bolt selling well even at a time of low fuel prices and an appetite for EVs being considered lukewarm by the press. GM states that Volt sales are up 74.5% for the First half of the year with 9,800 models sold to date. The average selling price is up $1,700 over the same period a year ago and the cars are turning over on the lots much faster than before. Research is expecting a 60% growth to 200,000 EV's sold this year in 2016. GM is very positive on the Bolt as no other auto maker has created and sold this kind of CUV before. Full Story

Chevrolet Press Release on Page 2 CHICAGO – Building on its early success and the rapid growth of the segment, Chevrolet today introduced the 2017 Trax – a more expressive take on one of America’s best-selling small SUVs. Contemporary design elements, including an all-new front-end appearance, and a new premium interior compose the visual updates, while new available active safety features and a new infotainment system – with available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility – expand its range of customer-focused technologies. “In the fastest-growing segment, Chevrolet Trax’s momentum is sure to continue with great design enhancements, premium details, and the latest technologies,” said Steve Majoros, director of marketing, Chevrolet Cars and Crossovers. “Features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and four new active safety features offer customers more than most competitors – and at an entry-level price.” With sales of 63,303 in 2015 – its first full year on the market – the Trax quickly climbed to the second-best-selling small SUV in America. It is also ranked in the top three globally, achieving more than 400,000 sales in 73 markets since its launch in late 2012. China and the United States are its top markets. In the United States, more than half of Trax’s customers with a trade-in turned in something other than a Chevrolet. Trax also attracts nearly 60 percent female customers – the highest percentage in the brand’s entire lineup. “With the Colorado and Trax, Chevrolet and our dealers are able to offer brand-new entries in fast-growing segments, which helps bring new customers to Chevrolet,” said Majoros. “And with other new vehicles such as the Cruze Hatchback and Bolt EV, we will continue to attract new customers to the Chevrolet franchise and continue to grow market share, as we did in 2015.” The 2017 Trax goes on sale this fall, offered in LS, LT and new Premier trims. Contemporary design The Trax’s fresh, contemporary appearance reflects the modern face of Chevrolet around the globe. A new grille and headlamps echo the styling elements seen in new Chevrolet models such as the Malibu, Cruze and Volt. “It’s a more sculptural, sophisticated design,” said Steve Kim, Chevrolet Trax designer. “There’s also a sporty streak in the new styling that speaks to the Trax’s agile, fun-to-drive personality.” The front fascia is all-new and incorporates Chevrolet’s new proportioned dual port grille. New, sleek headlamps flow around the corners and into the front fenders. Trax LS models feature new halogen reflector headlamps and uplevel LT and new Premier models have halogen projector headlamps with LED signature lighting. Chrome also accents the outboard fog lamp bezels. At the rear is a new fascia and dual taillamps, with the Premier model featuring LED signature lighting. The Premier is also offered with new 18-inch aluminum wheels. Premium interior A modified instrument panel is the foundation for the 2017 Trax’s premium interior enhancements. It interprets Chevrolet's signature dual-cockpit design more expressively, with an upper dashboard hood that flows uninterrupted across the panel to enhance the perception of spaciousness. The redesigned center instrument panel features greater visibility of a new 7-inch-diagonal MyLink color touch screen and Galvano chrome trim on the instrument panel and console contribute to the Trax’s premium ambiance. Premier models are offered with contrasting-color instrument panel trim that matches their leatherette seating trim. “Customers will really notice the elevation in the Trax’s interior design and attention to detail,” said Kim. “It’s an environment that transcends segment boundaries, offering rich, premium appointments and seamless integration of the technologies they rely on most.” Also new for 2017 is the instrument cluster, which features a new gauge display with prominent analog speedometer and tachometer readouts along with digital displays from the standard driver information center. Enhanced connectivity The 2017 Trax offers a new 7-inch diagonal infotainment system designed to support the latest connectivity technologies, including available Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and available 4G LTE with Wi-Fi hotspot. With the 4G LTE connection, Trax allows passengers to connect up to seven personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, to high-speed wireless Internet. Keyless Open and Start also add to the Trax’s roster of available new technologies. New active safety features New active safety features are designed to help alert drivers to potential crash situations. They are available depending on the model and include: Side Blind Zone Alert Rear Cross Traffic Alert Forward Collision Alert Lane Departure Warning Additional crash-avoidance technologies include a standard rearview camera. Trax also features 10 standard air bags. Turbocharged performance Returning for 2017 is the Trax’s Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated at an SAE-certified 138 horsepower (102 kW) and 148 lb-ft of torque (200 Nm) between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm.

  13. With one week to go before the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the pictures will really start rolling out now. Today we got a much clearer look at the 2016 Chevrolet Volt due to be fully revealed next week. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, the 2016 Volt peeked its nose through the curtain to give us a better look at it's face. The upcoming Volt will have powertrain improvements rumored to give the EV a 12% gain in electric only range, some of that will come from a more interactive regeneration mode that is currently available on the Cadillac ELR. The regeneration mode is controlled through paddles on the steering wheel. Recently Mark Reuss Vice President of GM Global Platform Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain and Andrew Farah, Volt Chief Engineer took the 2016 Volt out for a spin to discuss the Volt regeneration mode feature. The 2016 Chevrolet Volt officially debuts on Monday, January 12th at 7:35am at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. 16. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Reviewing other green sites, I came across this story by Green Car Reporters about their experience with a Chevy Volt and Tesla in the same household. http://www.greencarreports.com/news/1094260_life-with-chevy-volt-3-years-35000-miles-later-its-over To quote the story: "After three years of ownership, I've concluded that the Volt is a splendid vehicle. It's the only electric car I recommend to virtually everyone who asks." The writers story about never wanting to own an American auto and trying to buy a Nissan Leaf and ending up with a Volt is good reading. His first year of ownership ends with his Volt giving 200MPG in driving. He goes on to say when his Tesla arrived, his 16 year old daughter got the VOLT and the only time he used it was for Long Road trips, which the Tesla was useless for. Yet with using the VOLT for long distance trips, his Life Time Fuel Economy had fallen to only a Paltry 106MPG. To Quote the Write up again, the reporter listed the following "Five Best Things About The Volt" 1) No Range Anxiety 2) Peppy Acceleration 3) Peppy deceleration 4) Snoothness 5) Efficiency 6) Cargo room Course he apologizes but could not leave out the 6th. His reasoning in the write up are all very valid. He does have his pet peeves with the car but they are minor by his Bottom Line closing. Quote: "The Volt is great car--smooth, efficient, nice riding, versatile, and in my case, virtually trouble-free. It's in a class by itself: a full-performance electric car without range anxiety or compromised performance. I heartily recommend it to anyone--and I mean anyone, not just early adapters willing to make the usual e-car compromises--contemplating a compact hatchback or sedan. If the second-generation Volt, due out next year, can put three people in the back seat, hit 50 miles electric range, and 50 mpg in gas mode, its long-term future as the Electric Car For Everybody will be assured." I found reading this reporters write up on his 3yr experience with the VOLT validates my own limited experience with the car in that GM started off right with what they have done and in the next generation we should see even brighter and better things.

  18. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com Volt, the best selling Hybrid? Chevy Volt, Vauxhall Ampera, Opel Ampera, Holden Volt: four names yet one car sold worldwide. EV.com claims the GM quadruplet to be the best selling hybrid vehicles in the world (follow the link for more details). Based on GM’s data, an average Volt owner drives 900 miles between filling up the gas tank. This compares to many Prius web sites as well as Toyota’s data that shows the Toyota Prius owners driving an average of 450 miles between filling up the gas tank. The Volt has an MSRP of $34,185, after the federal tax credit ($7500) you end up with a selling price of $26,685 plus tax and license. This could be lower if your state offers additional incentives. The Volt has garnered the following Awards: 2014: J.D. Power: Highest Ranked Vehicle Appeal Among Compact Cars, Three Years in a Row 2014: Sierra Club’s: Leader in Strategic Vision’s 2013 Total Quality Award 2012 European Car of the Year 2011 North American Car of the Year 2011 World Green Car 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2009 Green Car Vision Award I was unable to find exact sales numbers for each model nor was I able to find a worldwide figure for the Prius. The Prius has been considered the best selling Hybrid by many web sites and magazines. How subjective is this I believe is based on who does the reporting and without firm worldwide numbers from the auto companies it will continue to be subjective. US News own review of the 22 best Hybrid cars Rankings (follow link for more details) show just how off they are compared to their readers who ranked the same cars. So is the Volt the world’s bestselling Hybrid? Would it be better if the generator ran off CNG or Diesel? What are your thoughts?

  23. Chevy showed off their newest addition to the commercial fleet aimed at small business owners to tradesmen in need of a compact service / delivery vehicle. The Chevy City Express is designed to compete with the Ford Transit Connect, Nissan NV200 and Chryslers new ProMaster City van. It is not surprising that GM has decided to join in one of the hottest fastest growing segments. GM last made a minivan back in 2008 and ending production just before the 2009 bankruptcy. They have continued to build an old outdated commercial van for this segment, yet instead of starting from scratch, GM choose to turn to Nissan who they have contracted with to build this small Cargo Van that Chevy will sell in North American markets. Based on the NV200, the Chevy City Express will go on sale fall of 2014 with production at the Nissan plant in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Nissan currently sells the NV200 as a commercial van including as the Taxi of Tomorrow in New York City. With having a van that won the International Van of the Year award with the lowest cost of ownership, GM is hoping to boost demand and take a percentage of this fast growing market. Ford in a move to grab even more market share before GM and Chrysler can come to market and before Nissan makes a noticeable dent also just updated for this year the Transit Connect. Unknown is the power plants that GM plans to deliver in this van. For sure it will be a small 4 cylinder power plant, but will they have Diesel and what about AWD?

Press release on Page 2 For Release: Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, 3 a.m. EST GM Strengthens its European Brand Strategy · Opel/Vauxhall to compete as GM’s mainstream brands across Europe · Chevrolet to focus on iconic products in Europe · Cadillac to expand in Europe DETROIT – General Motors today announced plans to accelerate its progress in Europe by bolstering its brands in the mainstream and premium segments. Beginning in 2016, GM will compete in Europe’s volume markets under its respected Opel and Vauxhall brands. The company’s Chevrolet brand will no longer have a mainstream presence in Western and Eastern Europe, largely due to a challenging business model and the difficult economic situation in Europe. Chevrolet, the fourth-largest global automotive brand, will instead tailor its presence to offering select iconic vehicles – such as the Corvette – in Western and Eastern Europe, and will continue to have a broad presence in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States. This will improve the Opel and Vauxhall brands and reduce the market complexity associated with having Opel and Chevrolet in Western and Eastern Europe. In Russia and the CIS, the brands are clearly defined and distinguished and, as a result, are more competitive within their respective segments. Cadillac, which is finalizing plans for expanding in the European market, will enhance and expand its distribution network over the next three years as it prepares for numerous product introductions. “Europe is a key region for GM that will benefit from a stronger Opel and Vauxhall and further emphasis on Cadillac,” said GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “For Chevrolet, it will allow us to focus our investments where the opportunity for growth is greatest.” “This is a win for all four brands. It’s especially positive for car buyers throughout Europe, who will be able to purchase vehicles from well-defined, vibrant GM brands,” Akerson said. Chevrolet will work closely with its dealer network in Western and Eastern Europe to define future steps while ensuring it can honor obligations to existing customers in the coming years. “Our customers can rest assured that we will continue to provide warranty, parts and services for their Chevrolet vehicles, and for vehicles purchased between now and the end of 2015,” said Thomas Sedran, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe. “We want to thank our customers and dealers for their loyalty to the Chevrolet brand here in Europe.” The majority of the Chevrolet portfolio sold in Western and Eastern Europe is produced in South Korea. As a result, GM will increase its focus on driving profitability, managing costs and maximizing sales opportunities in its Korean operations as the company looks for new ways to improve business results in the fast-changing and highly competitive global business environment. “We will continue to become more competitive in Korea,” said GM Korea President and CEO Sergio Rocha. “In doing so, we will position ourselves for long-term competitiveness and sustainability in the best interests of our employees, customers and stakeholders, while remaining a significant contributor to GM’s global business.” With the decision that Chevrolet will no longer have a mainstream presence in Western and Eastern Europe, GM expects to record net special charges of $700 million to $1 billion primarily in the fourth quarter of 2013 and continuing through the first half of 2014. The special charges include asset impairments, dealer restructuring, sales incentives and severance-related costs, and will pave the way for continued improvement in GM’s European operations through the further strengthening of the Opel and Vauxhall brands. Approximately $300 million of the net special charges will be non-cash expenses. In addition, GM expects to incur restructuring costs related to these actions that will not be treated as special charges, but will impact GM International Operations earnings in 2014.
