Genesis News: Genesis G90 Spied Already

Hyundai is a company on the move. Hyundai announced they were spinning off Genesis into a dedicated luxury brand just over a week ago. Then a couple of days ago, Genesis showed renderings of the Genesis G90, the brand's first car and the replacement for the Hyundai Equus. The G90 will have it's world debut next month in South Korea, so we'll likely see the car in the States in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

 

With all of that activity, it should be no surprise that a spy photographer already picked up the Genesis G90 undergoing testing. From the pictures of the interior, the G90 has a decidedly S-Class look to it, with a large embedded center screen and rows of horizontal metallic buttons.

 

There is also indications of some powertrain changes coming with a new 3.3 liter turbo V6 in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive formats while the 5.0 liter V8 gets all-wheel drive. The Hyundai 3.3T specs leaked out last winter and indicated around 365hp with 379 lb-ft of torque along a very flat torque curve that runs at peak from 1500 rpm to 4500 rpm. The 5.0 V8 is rumored to get an upgrade in power as well.

It's going to do a lot of things right, at a price that will be irresistible, as long as one can look past heritage or pedigree.

 

Cadillac and Genesis. One is among the oldest, reborn; and another than has just been birthed.

Almost as interesting as noting which brands aren't being discussed.

 

Oh yeah, Lincoln and Acura right now at this current moment in a wheel barrel heading towards the Niagara falls.

 

For Lincoln, if they can basically replicate the Conti Concept at 95% execution level, and price it well south of the CT6 and Genesis G90, then it might just be the miracle they need.

 

If they don't get saved...

I was also thinking Jag, actually. Maserati too. Both outfits are pretty wobbly, they probably wish they had a bit more breathing room after this announcement.

 

Actually, I think Jag is on the same boat as Cadillac. They both have BMW 3 Series beating vehicles. Both have very lightweight flagships.

 

Both are doing aggressive pricing. Both have had strained sales for their cars.

 

Both are catching up in the luxury CUV department.

 

Jaguar probably has the lead in near exotic sports-car image...almost like, well since we're talking about boats, and water... Corvette, while Cadillac has the unsinkable dreadnought of the Escalade, the pride of the fleet I say.

I think the 2nd tier luxury brands need to worry.  Hyundai can offer a pretty temping value proposition in any segment.  When you look at where Elantra and Sonata were 10 years ago to now, they made big gains.

 

With a dedicated luxury brand, with rear drive platforms, a 3.3 liter turbo V6, a big V8, 8-speed transmission, they have the hardware to easily outshine Lincoln or Acura and give Infiniti and Cadillac a run for their money.  Even the Lexus sedans haven't had any significant powertrain improvements since 2007, the RX and ES keep that brand alive.

As far as the Continental goes, if they want it to sell they should price it about $42,000 for the base V6 model, and $49,995 for the fully loaded twin turbo V6.  I think so few people want a Lincoln sedan, that it could be nicer than an MKX and cost $10,000 less and still not sell.
