<p>
	It is no secret that Bentley is working on an electric vehicle. What has been unclear is when said vehicle is expected to launch. Recently, Automotive News Europe had a sit-down with Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark where he revealed that electric cars are seen "as another growth opportunity in a five- to 10-year period." Why the long period?
</p>

<p>
	"The problem is, with the size of our vehicles and the frontal area we push through, current battery-power density limits the size of the car with a credible driving range. The Jaguar I-Pace is the perfect-size car for the battery technology, but it’s too small for us. It’s all driven by power density of the battery, but there’s nothing industrialized in the supply chain before 2023-2024-2025. Only then does it open up the size of the vehicle and the category you can make a credible battery-powered car," said Hallmark.
</p>

<p>
	Hallmark wouldn't say what Bentley's full-electric vehicle would look like, <a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/bentley/next-flying-spur-may-get-hybrid-option-mulsanne-successor-to-possibly-go-full-electric-r5030/" rel="">but past rumors</a> point to the possibility of the Mulsanne replacement of going full EV.
</p>

<p>
	Bentley knows that it needs an EV sooner or later. Hallmark said 40 percent of Bentley customers would consider buying an electric vehicle. Also, a set of possible Bentley customers, "the upper liberals and the post-moderns" are trending towards Porsche and Tesla models.

<p>
	At first glance, you might be wondering why a spy photographer took photos of what appears to be a standard Bentley Continental GT. But then why would this particular Continental GT have two fuel doors, one on each fender? The one on the right is the for fuel. The one on the left is most likely a charging port - leading to many thinking this is a mule for a plug-in hybrid variant of the Continental GT.
</p>

<p>
	What is most likely under the skin is a reworked version of Porsche’s hybrid system which is comprised of a turbocharged V6 and an electric motor. Bentley will be using a variant for the upcoming Bentayga Hybrid, although power figures are being kept quiet.
</p>

<p>
	Considering the undisguised state of this mule, we're thinking Bentley could reveal a production version sometime next year.

<p>
	Bentley tends to build even faster versions of their models which are denoted by the Speed nameplate. The Bentayga SUV is no exception to this.
</p>

<p>
	Bentley design boss Stefan Sielaff confirmed to Autocar this week that the luxury automaker is working on a Bentayga Speed. The model will get “typical” styling changes Bentley makes when creating Speed versions - revised front end, wider fenders, rear diffuser, and wheels. Autocar reports that more power is expected for the W12 engine. The current engine produces 600 horsepower, so 650 to 700 horsepower isn't out of the question.
</p>

<p>
	No time frame was given as to when the Bentayga Speed would appear. We're guessing 2020 at the earliest.

<p>
	<a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/bentley/new-bentley-ceo-admits-they-were-not-ready-for-the-electrification-trend-r5020/" rel="">Last week</a>, we brought you news that Bentley is planning to catch up on the electrification trend that a number of other automakers are ahead on. We now have some possible details as to some of their plans.
</p>

<p>
	The next-generation Flying Spur, due out towards the end of the year could be the second Bentley model to be offered with a hybrid powertrain.
</p>

<p>
	"Obviously Bentayga is our highest volume car so that’s the first one we have to hybridise. The next volume car is probably going to be the saloon car, so if you wanted a second car just for compliance, then that would normally be the next selection," said Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark to Autocar.
</p>

<p>
	Hallmark said "possibly" when asked if said sedan could be the Flying Spur. He said a decision would come in the next six months.
</p>

<p>
	Then there is the successor to the Mulsanne. Autocar has learned that Bentley is debating whether or not they will do "a like-for-like replacement" to the current Mulsanne or something else. One possibility is to make the replacement a pure electric vehicle as a forward-looking flagship model. This could happen if next-generation battery technology arrives before the end of the Mulsanne's production run - expected in the early 2020s.

<p>
	Back in March, Bentley unveiled their first electrified model. The Bentayga Hybrid is a plug-in hybrid that pairs a turbocharged 3.0L V6 with an electric motor to improve efficiency and allow the model to travel up to 31 miles on EV power alone. But Bentley's new CEO Adrian Hallmark admits they need to do more.
</p>

<p>
	“The [Bentayga] hybrid is a great first step but we need to do more than one hybrid. Hence the first thing we’ve changed [since I started] is the electrification of the cycle plan as fast as we can," said Hallmark to Autocar.
</p>

<p>
	He admits that the luxury automaker wasn't prepared for the electrification trend and is working fast to fix this.
</p>

<p>
	“That’s been quite a big change and we’ve shuffled a number of things around to be able to do it. It means that in every name plate will be an electrified option - hybrid or full electric – by 2025. We’ll flesh out specific plans in the next three to six months. Certainly by the end of this year, we’ll be in a much clearer position about what we’ll do.”
</p>

<p>
	Bentley is also planning to launch an electric vehicle within the next five years. Hallmark wouldn't go into detail about what the model would be, but did say we could do anything.”

<p>
	We've known that Bentley is planning to do an electric vehicle, most likely using the platform underpinning the Porsche Mission E. What is still up in the air is what shape that vehicle could be?
</p>

<p>
	“The next step for sure is an electric, unique Bentley that isn’t based on an existing car but a completely fresh and new development, with electric propulsion and obviously different proportions following the function. It gives us a great chance to establish a completely new design language for the company,” said Bentley design director Stefan Sielaff.
</p>

<p>
	“It will happen not so far in the future.”
</p>

<p>
	Auto Express believes the model in question is a four-door coupe, partly due to Sielaff's comments.<br>
	<br>
	“It should be a four or five-seater and it should also have the possibility to carry a little bit of luggage, maybe not for five people. I think we need to make sure that this family member is obviously new, and not imitating another concept we have already in the portfolio. But definitely more than two seats; that’s something I am convinced of,” said Sielaff.
</p>

<p>
	“But nevertheless I think it should be a vehicle that contains a certain coupe-style or sportivity, and also a certain elegance. I don’t think it should be something that is raised high, like an SUV.”
</p>

<p>
	This seems to line up with a <a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/bentley/rumorpile-bentley-to-use-porsche-mission-e-for-a-new-sedan-r4645/" rel="">rumor back in November</a> where it was reported that Bentley was planning a four-door coupe possibly named Barnato.

			Bentley is building out its roster of powertrains for the Bentayga. Already, the SUV is available with the 6.0L W12 and 4.0L turbodiesel V8 (for those outside of the U.S.) Soon, Bentley will be unveiling a plug-in hybrid variant. But before that, Bentley has one more engine to show. Meet the Bentley Bentayga V8.
		</p>

		<p>
			The V8 in question is a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine found under the hoods of the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera Turbos. Power is rated at 542 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and 4WD. Bentley says the Bentayga V8 hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180. That's not too far off from the Bentayga W12 which hits 60 mph in 4 seconds and a top speed of 187 mph. Bentley will be offering the active suspension system complete with a 48-volt electrical system and a set of carbon-ceramic brakes with the largest set of front brakes discs ever fitted to a vehicle - 17 inches.
		</p>

		<p>
			The V8 version looks almost the same as other Bentaygas. But those with keen eyes will notice the figure 8 shape of the exhaust tips, the only clue for telling the difference.
		</p>

		<p>
			Bentley hasn't announced pricing, but the V8 Bentayga will be available at dealers sometime this spring.

<p>
			<strong>(Crewe, 12 January 2018) </strong>Since its introduction, the Bentley Bentayga has defined a new sector and set the luxury SUV benchmark, offering customers the ultimate Grand Touring experience unrestricted by landscape or conditions. The award-winning Bentley model is now available in its most sporting guise to date – the Bentayga V8.
		</p>

		<p>
			At the heart of the latest Bentayga model is a new-generation 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine which combines immense power with impressive fuel efficiency. The addition of a characteristic V8 burble, stylish twin-quad exhaust pipes and optional carbon-ceramic brakes, reveals more of the luxury SUV’s sporting character.
		</p>

		<p>
			Sitting at the core of the Bentayga range, the new V8 model fuses exquisite luxury with power, usability and extensive sporting ability. Its responsive performance is fully customisable on demand by the driver through Bentley’s Drive Dynamics system, from limousine-like refinement to sporting precision.
		</p>

		<p>
			Inside, customers will recognise Bentley’s unique approach to modern luxury tailoring, with the familiar blend of exquisite handcrafted materials and advanced technologies. New styling features include a wood and hide steering wheel and the introduction of a high-gloss carbon-fibre interior panel finish.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Immense Performance, Impressive Efficiency</strong>
		</p>

		<p>
			At the heart of the new Bentayga V8 sits an all-new 4.0-litre, 32-valve, V8 engine featuring dual twin-scroll turbochargers located inside the ‘V’ of the engine.
		</p>

		<p>
			The dynamic unit develops 542 bhp (550 PS) and 568 lb.ft. (770 Nm) of torque, resulting in a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h) and 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds (100 km/h in 4.5 seconds).
		</p>

		<p>
			The class-leading performance of the Bentayga V8 is complemented by a range of 464 miles (746 km), with CO2 emissions of 260 g/km. This refined efficiency (24.8 mpg / 11.4 l/100 km combined) comes, in part, through the ability of the engine to de-activate four of its eight cylinders in suitable conditions, without compromising the drive. The seamless change happens in just 20 milliseconds, making it imperceptible to customers.
		</p>

		<p>
			The addition of Stop-Start technology, which can activate at ‘near-to-stop’ speeds, also contributes to the emissions figure.
		</p>

		<p>
			This unique blend of power and refinement gives the Bentayga V8 a distinct, unrivalled position in the luxury SUV market.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Striking, Individual Exterior Design</strong>
		</p>

		<p>
			The exterior design of the Bentayga V8 reflects the model’s sporting position within the Bentayga family.
		</p>

		<p>
			The shape is defined by the Bentayga’s unique muscular, sculptural lines, balancing athleticism with an unmistakable presence on the road. From the four round LED headlamps to the large matrix grille, the Bentayga V8 exudes the Bentley design DNA, while the overt powerline, large rear haunches and raised ride height reflect the rugged off-road ability of the luxury SUV.
		</p>

		<p>
			For the first time, optional carbon-ceramic brakes are offered on the Bentayga. The braking system is the largest and most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley, and the largest front brake system available on any production car.
		</p>

		<p>
			The brake discs measure 440 mm in diameter at the front and 370 mm at the rear, and sit inside enormous Bentley-branded calipers, with 10 pistons at the front. Together these provide a maximum braking torque of 6,000 Nm.
		</p>

		<p>
			Also introduced on the Bentayga V8 are sporting red brake calipers for the front and rear standard iron brakes. The calipers are painted in special, high-temperature resistant Tornado red paint, and signal strongly the dynamic intent of this performance-oriented Bentayga V8.
		</p>

		<p>
			In front of these sit a choice of 11 wheel designs, including an all-new 22” five-spoke wheel with black painted and polished finish.
		</p>

		<p>
			A purposeful black and chrome grille at the front is complemented by Bentley ‘twin-quad’ exhaust tailpipes at rear, both of which provide a further subtle reminder of the new engine specification.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Sublime, Handcrafted Luxury Interior</strong>
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga V8 continues the Bentley tradition of intricate detailing and fine, handcrafted precision using authentic materials. Customers can specify hand cross-stitching, which highlights the interior styling lines of the seats and door panels, and there is the choice of the Bentayga’s four-, five-, or seven-seat configuration, for ultimate versatility.
		</p>

		<p>
			Three innovative new interior options are offered in the Bentayga V8: a high-gloss carbon-fibre finish replacing traditional veneer surfaces; a wood and hide steering wheel; and a new rich red leather, Cricket Ball.
		</p>

		<p>
			For the first time in a Bentley, a high-gloss carbon-fibre finish is offered to customers seeking a contemporary, technical feel. Bentley has traditionally offered a matt carbon-fibre surface to replace the veneer on panels including the fascia, centre console and door waistrails, but this is the first time the finish has been offered with a high gloss, which enhances the technical weave.
		</p>

		<p>
			Another first – the wood and hide trimmed steering wheel – can be specified in the Bentayga V8. Uniquely, the new three-spoke, wood and hide trimmed wheel (available in seven different veneer finishes) uses a solid wood base and thus maintains the integrity and authenticity of interior features offered by Bentley.
		</p>

		<p>
			Cricket Ball leather makes its debut in the Bentayga V8. The evocative new colour is inspired by the traditional and instantly appealing deep chestnut hue of a new cricket ball, and fits perfectly into the inspiring range of 15 interior colours and five colour splits offered by Bentley.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Effortless Bentley Performance, Unrestrained by Climate or Terrain</strong>
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga V8 is available with Bentley Dynamic Ride – the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises a 48V system. This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.
		</p>

		<p>
			Bentley’s adaptive and reactive system provides variable torsional resistance, allowing the Bentayga to be both dynamically capable and comfortable for all occupants at all times. The pioneering use of a 48V system results in silent, instantaneous responses to deal with all road surfaces.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga V8 offers class-leading ride comfort, steering feel and handling thanks to the partnership of a highly sophisticated chassis and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In addition to advanced, multi-mode Traction Control (TCS), the Bentayga also features Hill Descent Control.
		</p>

		<p>
			Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) is also featured on the Bentayga. The new system improves feedback to the driver, while providing isolation from steering kick-back both on- and off-road. EPAS also features a variable rack ratio, permitting light and fast steering while manoeuvring at low speeds, as well as a more subdued response for excellent stability at high speeds.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga offers the widest range of on- and off-road drive settings of any vehicle via Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Mode and optional All-Terrain Specification. Up to eight modes (four on- and four off-road) are available, allowing drivers, at the simple turn of a dial, to select the perfect dynamic set-up for any surface or road condition.
		</p>

		<p>
			All-Terrain Specification allows the customer to select the appropriate vehicle settings for a wide range of off-road surfaces, including Snow &amp; Grass, Dirt &amp; Gravel, Mud &amp; Trail and Sand Dunes. Meanwhile, the Driver Information Panel displays information on pitch, roll, wheel articulation, steering angle, compass bearing and altitude.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga V8 comes with multi-mode air suspension. The driver has four different modes to choose from: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low. High 2, for example, can be manually selected when tackling more severe off-road surfaces. Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.
		</p>

		<p>
			Hill Descent Control automatically regulates the vehicle’s speed on steep declines, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering and obstacles ahead. It can be pre-set at speeds between two and 30 km/h (going in either direction) and works on gradients greater than five per cent.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Innovative Features and Advanced Technologies</strong>
		</p>

		<p>
			A suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and infotainment features designed to enhance safety, comfort and convenience make the Bentayga V8 an innovative, advanced and connected luxury SUV.
		</p>

		<p>
			Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) including Stop &amp; Go, Predictive ACC and Traffic Assist enables the driver to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front. Predictive ACC uses the navigation data, sensors and cameras to predict upcoming corners, city boundaries and speed-limit changes and can then modify the vehicle speed accordingly, improving both comfort and fuel economy.
		</p>

		<p>
			In urban environments, there are a number of driver aids available on the Bentayga V8. These systems – such as Traffic Sign Recognition, which detects a wide variety of traffic signs and displays information to the driver; Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, which uses radar technology to detect crossing traffic when reversing out of a parking space; and Top View, a system which uses four cameras to display an overall picture of the vehicle’s surroundings – combine to enhance everyday usability.
		</p>

		<p>
			Park Assist is also available – a system that detects suitable parking spaces (both parallel and perpendicular) before autonomous steering takes over to support parking manoeuvres.
		</p>

		<p>
			Other innovative systems available include Night Vision, which uses infra-red technology to identify potential obstacles ahead, and a Head-Up Display, which reduces driver distraction and increases safety.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga’s 8” touch screen infotainment system boasts class-leading navigation technology, a 60GB hard drive, and a choice of up to 30 languages. Rear seat passengers benefit from the introduction of the Bentley Entertainment Tablet – a removable 10.2” Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for effortless, high-speed on-board connectivity.
		</p>

		<p>
			Customers can choose between three different sound systems for the Bentayga V8: Bentley Standard Audio, Bentley Signature Audio and Naim for Bentley Premium Audio. The latter is the most powerful system in the segment, with 1,950 watts, a network of 18 speakers and super-tweeters for unrivalled recreation of the highest audio frequencies.

<p>
	Bentley has been talking about building a plug-in hybrid variant of their Bentayga SUV for quite some time and soon they'll be revealing it to the world.
</p>

<p>
	According to Automotive News Europe, Bentley will be debuting the plug-in hybrid variant at the Geneva Motor Show in March. It is thought that Bentley would use the same powertrain found in the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid - a 2.9L twin-turbo V6 paired with 136 horsepower electric motor to produce a combined output of 462 horsepower. When fully charged, the E-Hybrid can travel up 30 miles on electric power alone. We're expecting the Bentayga to have a shorter range.
</p>

<p>
	The Plug-In Hybrid version of the Bentayga will go on sale in the second-half of 2018, giving Bentley three different engine options for the U.S. - a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 and 6.0L twin-turbo W12. Europe also gets the option of a V8 diesel.

	Bentley appears to have electric vehicles on the brain. <a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/bentley/bentley-decides-to-do-ev-over-smaller-suv-r4525/" rel="">Back in September</a>, we reported that the luxury automaker decided to go forward on an electric coupe over a small SUV. It seems there are plans for another electric vehicle.
</p>

<p>
	According to a report from Automobile Magazine, Bentley will be working on its own version of the Porsche Mission E codenamed J1. The new model will use the Mission E architecture which is said to have three different power outputs - 402, 536, and 670 horsepower. But there is talk of Porsche working on a monster version producing 936 horsepower and coming with larger batteries. Expect a four-door coupe design and possibly wearing the name of Barnato.
</p>

<p>
	There is a wrinkle to this as Audi is said to be working on its own take on the J1 possibly named e-tron GT.

<p>
	For the past year or so, Bentley executives have faced a tough decision; do they do a smaller SUV or a sports car?
</p>

<p>
	Speaking with Autocar, Bentley boss Wolfgang Durheimer said they had made the choice to do the sports car, albeit one with an electric powertrain.
</p>

<p>
	“What I can say is that a small SUV is no longer on the scheme. We’re favouring a car with a full electric powertrain,” said Durheimer.
</p>

<p>
	“We intend to be the leader in electrification in the luxury segment. We see that it fits into the Bentley scheme – low rev torque with seamless acceleration.”
</p>

<p>
	Bentley previewed this idea earlier this year with the EXP12 Speed 6e concept that featured two electric motors and ability to use inductive charging. The production model is expected to be slightly larger and use the platform that will underpin the upcoming Porsche Mission E.

<p>
	Bentley has been planning to launch a plug-in hybrid variant of the Bentayga for 2018 and we have finally gotten our first look at via some new spy photos.
</p>

<p>
	The mule caught in Spain may look like your standard Bentayga, but it features fuel doors on both rear fenders. The standard Bentayga has its fuel door on the right side, meaning the left side is likely for the recharging port. The spy photographer who caught the Bentayga also ran the plates through the United Kingdom's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) where it was uncovered that the model was using a hybrid system with a 2995cc engine. It seems possible this mule was using a variation of the hybrid powertrain used in the Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid which also uses a 2995cc engine - a 3.0L V6. The Cayenne e-hybrid can travel up to 14 Miles on electric power alone. Whether or not this will appear in the production version remains to be seen.
</p>

<p>
	Bentley is expected to show the Bentayga Plug-In Hybrid at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

<p>
	It is no secret that Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has his eye on adding a few more Bentayga variants.<a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/bentley/bentley-plans-on-growing-the-bentayga-lineup-r3958/" rel=""> As we reported back in December</a>, Bentley is considering a coupe-styled variant, long-wheelbase model, and even a high-performance version. If approved, these models could arrive in 2019 - the time when Bentley is planning to do a facelift for Bentayga.
</p>

<p>
	But why is Durheimer so interested in adding more variants? Speaking with Autocar, he explained the reason was to stay one step ahead of competitors.
</p>

<p>
	“Derivatives are important to us because you have to be the newest kid in town for customers,” said Durheimer.
</p>

<p>
	“We will see a large number of competitors [in this segment] in the future. They are all working on their luxury SUVs. The customers that are buying in this market are keen to have the latest design out there.”
</p>

<p>
	The competitors include Rolls-Royce's upcoming Cullinan, Lamborghini Urus, and Audi Q8.
</p>

<p>
	It should be noted that a decision on adding more variants to the Bentayga lineup has still not been made.

<p>
	Bentley has been hinting for awhile about adding a second SUV to its lineup, something smaller than the current Bentayga. This new SUV could go all-electric according to a report from Automotive News.
</p>

<p>
	"I can assure you that Bentley -- on the long term view -- will not stay with one model only in the SUV lineup. We have clear indications that a smaller Bentayga as a Bentley SUV would find great acceptance," said Wolfgang Duerheimer, Bentley CEO.
</p>

<p>
	But there is the concern that the smaller SUV could eat into the sales of the Bentayga. Hence the idea of making it an EV.
</p>

<p>
	"If you are looking for such a car [small SUV] then we are looking to that in combination with the possibilities to go full electric. It only makes sense if you get really new customers into the brand," said Rolf Frech, Bentley's board member for engineering.
</p>

<p>
	Frech said that if this idea was to go forward, it would likely come in 2020 or beyond when Bentley reaches stage two of their electrification plans. Part one is the introduction of the Bentayga PHEV this year, followed by the Flying Spur and Mulsanne.

<p>
	It is no secret that Bentley is working on a plug-in hybrid variant of the Bentayga SUV due out next year. But Bentley CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer revealed that all of their models would have the option of a plug-in hybrid in the coming years. Speaking at the Automotive News World Conference, Duerheimer said this powertrain provides the best of two worlds - allowing owners to drive their vehicles on electric power only in cities where gas engines might be restricted and traveling for long distances without having to recharge the battery.
</p>

<p>
	“To cover long distances and to make it from one city to another -- and you travel long distances in the U.S. -- I think the combustion engine will follow us for a long time,” Duerheimer said.
</p>

<p>
	Following the Bentayga, the next-generation Continental GT will be the next model to get a plug-in hybrid option.

<p>
	The Bentley Bentayga maybe one of most controversial models ever launched by the brand, but it has exceeded sales expectations. Because of this, Bentley is considering expanding Bentayga lineup.
</p>

<p>
	Autocar reports that there are three models up for consideration. First up is a coupe-styled version that could launch in 2019 if given the green-light by Volkswagen.
</p>

<p>
	“I’m confident that it will happen and our team is working on the case for this car, but it is not yet approved for production. We are the first in the luxury SUV space and at the moment unopposed, but there are lots of rivals coming to the sector. The question we need to answer is if there is space for all these different bodystyles,” said Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer.
</p>

<p>
	Next is a long-wheelbase Bentayga that is already under development. This model will be primarily be aimed at markets such as China and the Middle East.
</p>

<p>
	“In the Middle East and China it is almost exclusively what we sell. Those markets have shown what is possible and it makes business sense; the engineering is not rocket science, but it is expensive because when you change components like the side panels and roof you add a lot of cost,” said Dürheimer.
</p>

<p>
	The last model is a high-performance Bentayga that could use a retuned version of the W12 engine. Possible competitors include the Range Rover SVR.
</p>

<p>
	The Bentayga lineup currently consists of a 6.0L W12 and a diesel V8. A Plug-in hybrid will arrive in 2018.

<p>
			They said it would never happen. But for the first time in their history, Bentley will be offering a diesel in one of their vehicles. This week, the British luxury automaker announced the Bentayga will come with the option of a diesel engine in 2017. The engine in question is a 4.0L triple-charged V8 that produces 429 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. If you're wondering why this engine sounds somewhat familiar, this is the same engine found in the <a href="https://www.cheersandgears.com/articles/news/audi/revealed33-audi-sq7-tdi-r3397/" rel="">Audi SQ7 TDI</a>. Bentley claims the Bentayga Diesel is the fastest diesel SUV in the world as it can hit 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and continue to a top speed of 168 mph. Even with this performance, the Bentayga Diesel can return a combined fuel economy figure of 35.8 mpg on the European cycle (allowing it to have a range of 621 miles).
		</p>

		<p>
			Aside from the new engine, the Bentayga Diesel has some small differences to separate itself from the regular Bentayga. There is a blacked-out grille, discreet 'V8 Diesel' badges on the front doors, and new tailpipes.
		</p>

		<p>
			Sales of the Bentayga Diesel will begin early next year in Europe and expand to other markets in due time. Bentley isn't planning to sell Bentayga Diesel in the U.S. - a smart move considering the dark cloud brought by the Volkswagen diesel emission mess. Nor will you see this model debuting at the Paris Motor Show next month. <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-volkswagen-exhibition-idUSKCN11P16A" rel="external nofollow">Bentley and Lamborghini announced this week</a> they would not be appearing at the show. This is part of an effort at Volkswagen to help curb costs because of the diesel emission mess.

			</li>
		</ul>
<p>
			<strong>(Crewe, 21 September 2016) </strong>Bentley Motors today announces full details of the first diesel model in the iconic British brand’s history – the Bentayga Diesel.
		</p>

		<p>
			At the heart of the world's fastest and most powerful luxury diesel SUV is an all-new, technologically advanced, triple-charged, 4.0-litre, 32-valve V8 engine. Developing 435 PS (429 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb. ft.) of torque, the Bentayga Diesel hits a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph) and can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds).
		</p>

		<p>
			Bentley’s Crewe-based engineers have developed a V8 powertrain to deliver an authentic Bentley driving experience. Peak torque is available from very early in the rev range (just 1,000 rpm), which makes progress in the Bentayga Diesel truly effortless.
		</p>

		<p>
			New clean technology gives the Bentayga Diesel the lowest CO2 emissions of any Bentley, as well as a range of over 1,000 km (621 miles) – allowing owners to, for example, drive from London to Verbier, Bordeaux or the Scottish Highlands on a single tank.
		</p>

		<p>
			Inside, the Bentayga Diesel retains the innovative features, advanced technologies and handcrafted luxury for which the Bentley Bentayga is renowned.
		</p>

		<p>
			Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors, said: “The Bentayga Diesel represents a moment of immense significance in Bentley’s history, by giving the world its fastest luxury diesel SUV. Immense power, grand touring capabilities and superb refinement – this is a true Bentley. Only Bentley could produce a car so powerful, yet so refined.”
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Clean, Powerful Performance – V8 Engine Offers Sublime Capability</strong><br>
			The Bentayga Diesel retains the dynamic performance of the Bentayga W12, while introducing clean technologies and enhanced range.
		</p>

		<p>
			The next-generation 4.0-litre V8 engine, mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, develops a class-leading 435 PS (429 bhp) and 900 Nm (664 lb. ft.) of torque. Variable-geometry, sequential twin-scroll turbochargers are powered by the exhaust gases, while a third electric supercharger – powered by Bentley’s innovative 48V system – spools up within 30 microseconds to eliminate turbo lag. The effect is effortless, seamless power delivery across the entire engine-speed range – the quintessential Bentley driving experience.
		</p>

		<p>
			This enables the Bentayga Diesel to deliver a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds) and a top speed of 270 km/h (168 mph).
		</p>

		<p>
			An immense amount of torque is available from very low speeds, with peak torque achieved from just 1,000 rpm, for both seamless on-road performance and exemplary off-roading ability. The immediate flow of power complements the traditional, class-leading refinement and performance customers have come to expect.
		</p>

		<p>
			The new model has also been made with a number of specific developments to provide peerless refinement. For example, the bespoke exhaust system has been acoustically engineered to be as quiet and refined as possible.
		</p>

		<p>
			The addition of Selective Catalytic Reduction contributes to lower nitrous oxides. Combined with Bentley’s stop-start system; class-leading CO2 emissions of 210 g/km; and an impressive range of over 1,000 km between fuel stops, this technology puts the Bentayga Diesel at the forefront of advanced engine efficiency.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Contemporary, Luxurious British Design</strong><br>
			The Bentayga Diesel demonstrates the same authentic and modern British luxury design as its W12-powered stablemate, while also benefitting from a number of unique styling additions.
		</p>

		<p>
			A V8 Diesel badge is embedded on the lower front door edge, complemented by a new Bentley ‘twin-quad’ exhaust tailpipe design, which provide a further subtle reminder of the new engine specification.
		</p>

		<p>
			Further distinctive external styling cues include a bold, black matrix grille with chrome surround and central bar, which serves as a signature for the powertrain that lies behind. A new optional Mulliner Driving Specification 21” wheel – available in a silver or grey painted finish (the latter with machined accents to the spoke and rim) – can be specified, with a 20” ten-spoke alloy wheel offered as standard.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga’s cockpit sets new standards for both luxury and precision, with meticulous tolerances between the exquisite veneered woods and metal elements.
		</p>

		<p>
			The hand-selected veneers – including a new Liquid Amber finish introduced with Bentayga Diesel – form pure and elegant surfaces throughout the cabin. Each of the 15 pieces are shaped by Bentley’s artisans and finished with trademark Bentley attention to detail.
		</p>

		<p>
			As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga Diesel can be handed over to the highly skilled craftspeople at Mulliner, Bentley’s bespoke coachbuilding department, who will respond to individual customer requirements.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga is available with an exquisite integrated Mulliner Hamper Set, complete with refrigerator, bespoke fine Linley china cutlery, crockery and crystal glass, and storage area for dry goods. For comfort in the great outdoors, sections of the hamper can be removed and used as seats.
		</p>

		<p>
			A bespoke mechanical Mulliner Tourbillon by Breitling clock can also be specified. The most complex of watch mechanisms, the Mulliner Tourbillon is automatically wound periodically by a dedicated high-precision winding mechanism within the car. This masterpiece is machined in solid gold (customers can select from either rose or white gold), with a choice of either a mother-of-pearl or black ebony face and decorated with eight diamond indexes.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Effortless Bentley Performance, Unrestrained by Climate or Terrain</strong><br>
			The development programme for the Bentayga has been the most exhaustive in the Bentley brand’s history, ranging across five continents. From the dirt and gravel of South Africa and the dunes of Dubai, to the muddy fields of Cheshire, and from -30°C in the frozen North Cape to searing 50°C desert heat, the Bentayga’s ability to perform on any surface and even in the most extreme conditions has been proven.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga Diesel can be specified with Bentley Dynamic Ride – the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises an unrivalled 48V system. Inherent in larger vehicles with a higher centre of gravity, this system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling.
		</p>

		<p>
			Bentley’s adaptive and reactive system provides variable torsional resistance, allowing the Bentayga to be both dynamically capable and comfortable for all occupants at all times. The pioneering use of a 48V system – which on Bentayga Diesel utilises a new lithium-ion battery system to offer even greater reserves of power – results in silent, instantaneous responses to deal with all road surfaces.
		</p>

		<p>
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga Diesel offers class-leading ride comfort, steering feel and handling thanks to the partnership of a highly sophisticated chassis and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). In addition to advanced, multi-mode Traction Control (TCS), the Bentayga also features Hill Descent Control.
		</p>

		<p>
			Hill Descent Control automatically regulates the vehicle’s speed on steep declines, allowing the driver to concentrate fully on steering and obstacles ahead. It can be pre-set at speeds between two and 30 km/h (going in either direction) and works on gradients greater than five per cent.
		</p>

		<p>
			As with all Bentleys, the Bentayga Diesel comes with multi-mode air suspension. The driver has four different modes to choose from: High 2, High 1, Normal and Low. High 2, for example, can be manually selected when tackling more severe off-road surfaces. Customers can also lower the rear suspension via a switch in the boot, to ease loading and trailer hitching.
		</p>

		<p>
			<strong>Innovative Features and Advanced Technologies</strong><br>
			A suite of state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and infotainment features designed to enhance safety, comfort and convenience make the Bentayga Diesel an innovative, advanced and connected luxury SUV.
		</p>

		<p>
			It offers the widest range of on- and off-road drive settings of any vehicle via Bentley’s Drive Dynamics Mode and optional Responsive Off-Road Settings. Up to eight modes are available, allowing drivers, at the simple turn of a dial, to select the perfect dynamic set-up for any surface or road condition. This versatility is complemented by Bentley Dynamic Ride (electrically activated 48V active roll control) and Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS).
		</p>

		<p>
			Responsive Off-Road Settings allows the customer to select the appropriate vehicle settings for a wide range of off-road surfaces, while the Driver Information Panel displays information on pitch, roll, wheel articulation, steering angle, compass bearing and altitude.
		</p>

		<p>

			In urban environments, there are a number of driver aids available on the Bentayga Diesel.
		</p>

		<p>
			Park Assist is also available – a system that detects suitable parking spaces (both parallel and perpendicular) before autonomous steering takes over to support parking manoeuvres, even in narrow and tricky spaces.
		</p>

		<p>
			Other innovative systems available include Electronic Night Vision, which uses infra-red technology to identify potential obstacles ahead, and a Head-Up Display, which reduces driver distraction and increases safety.
		</p>

		<p>
			The Bentayga’s eight-inch touch screen infotainment system boasts class-leading navigation technology, a 60GB hard drive, and a choice of up to 30 languages.
		</p>

		<p>
			Rear seat passengers benefit from the introduction of the Bentley Entertainment Tablet – a removable 10.2” Android device with 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth for effortless, high-speed on-board connectivity.
		</p>

		<p>
			Customers can choose between three different sound systems for the Bentayga Diesel: Bentley Standard Audio, Bentley Signature Audio and Naim for Bentley Premium Audio. The latter is the most powerful system in the segment, with 1,950 watts, a network of 18 speakers and super-tweeters for unrivalled recreation of the highest audio frequencies.
		</p>

		<p>
			Customer deliveries will begin in Europe early next year, with entry into Russia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan planned across the rest of 2017.

<p><img src="https://cdn.cheersandgears.com/monthly_2016_08/5732c9f397ee71593eb597778cfc1d6e.jpg.4c556f722eb631aed67a2b520b3cc31b.jpg" /></p>

<p>Bentley is considering whether or not they should offer an electric powertrain for their flagship sedan, the Mulsanne. Hans Holzgartner, product and marketing manager for the Mulsanne told Autocar part of the reason for this comes down to Chinese lawmakers possibly passing legislation banning all vehicles except EVs in certain cities.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“At the moment, the indication is that full electric will be the only way that you’ll get into some of the cities in China. I wouldn’t say we’re discounting [hybrid engines] completely, but it looks like if you don’t have a full electric drive, even some of the hybrid drives just won’t get into some cities in China,” said Holzgartner.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Similar legislation is being considered in other European countries, causing Bentley to put the idea of electric powertrains as a possible high priority item.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>But why the Mulsanne? Why not one of their small and 'lighter' models? Holzgartner explained that adding an electric powertrain into the Mulsanne would improve some of the key traits such providing a quiet ride.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“With a Mulsanne-sized car, it’s all about torque anyway,” he added. “The delivery characteristics of electric drive — loads of bottom-end torque, almost silent delivery, very smooth — they all fit," said Holzhartner.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“Our challenge is to make something that’s as interesting to drive as a current Bentley, because while a Mulsanne will be driven in almost silent mode even with a petrol engine, if you’ve got a Mulsanne Speed you’ll want to let rip every so often. That’s going to be the challenge: creating something that can be fun as well.”</p>

<p>Very few engines have a long history of powering various vehicles - the small-block Chevrolet V8 and the Buick 3.5L V8 that would be used in a number of British vehicles. Another one can be found under the hood of the Bentley Mulsanne, the 6.75L (6 and 3/4 in Bentley parlance) twin-turbo V8 can trace its roots back to 1959. But the final curtain call for this engine is coming.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer told Car and Driver that the V8 has found its “final home” in the Mulsanne. The next-generation Bentley flagship would switch to a 12-Cylinder (most likely a W12 one). Keep in mind this isn't likely going to happen until the next decade as the Mulsanne recently underwent a refresh.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>This isn't the first time the V8 - known as the L-Series - has been shown the door. Back when BMW owned Bentley in the mid-nineties, the automaker dropped the L-Series V8 and replaced it with one of their own with the new Arnage. Volkswagen would snap Bentley up in 1998 and would bring back the L-Series for the Arnage in the Red Label. The BMW V8 would stick around in the Arnage Green Label. However due to poor sales of the Green Label, Bentley dropped it - engine and all.</p>

<p>Bentley will be introducing their first hybrid next year with the new Bentayga SUV. But that's not the only alternative powertrain the luxury automaker is looking into. Speaking with Australian outlet Drive, Bentley's board member in charge of engineering, Rolf Frech said they are investigating whether or not to do an electric vehicle.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>"We are currently in the stage where we are evaluating all the possibilities, but there are so many question marks behind this. I think there will be an answer within the next six months to a year to decide which direction we will go, but of course electric will be a future strategy direction for Bentley," said Frech.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>One vehicle that could go full electric is the upcoming EXP 10 Speed 6. Frech said the model had a low center of gravity and going with an electric powertrain would offer the instantaneous punch that Bentley wants in a sports car. Frech went on to say the Bentley would have access to Porsche's Mission E platform.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>"We not only have the ability to use the (Mission E) platform but we can also use a lot of these modules to bring into our car. I think there are big steps coming and what we are doing now is preparing ourselves if these steps make sense then we will go for it," said Frech.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>In the meantime, Bentley is planning to offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain for all of their models in the near future.</p>

<p>So what is up next for Bentley after the Bentayga SUV? That's a question that the luxury automaker is finding itself asking itself at the moment. Speaking with Top Gear, Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer says there are two projects on the table up for consideration.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The first one is doing a variant of the Bentayga which will become more coupe-like (think BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe) and feature a number of performance enhancements.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>The second option is to do a production version of the EXP 10 Speed 6 concept shown at the Geneva Motor Show this year.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“The customer response to EXP 10 Speed 6 was phenomenal, and we want to build on this and make it a reality,” said Durheimer.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Making this option more intriguing is the availability of an all-electric powertrain delivering around 400 to 500 horsepower. There will also a be a gas engine and possibly a hybrid powertrain to go with it.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Now both of these models might appear in Bentley's lineup, but the decision will have one of these models appear much faster than the other.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“It’s about return on investment. When does the money come back in?” said Durheimer.<br><br><strong>Source</strong>: <a href="http://www.topgear.com/car-news/british/will-next-bentley-be-500bhp-two-seat-electric-sports-car" rel="external nofollow">Top Gear</a></p>

<p>2019 will mark 100 years of Bentley and the automaker is considering doing something special for the occasion.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>“Our centenary would be a good time to create a new limited series car,” said Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>There are a number of ideas being considered, including a hypercar. </p>
<p> </p>
<p>“That project will be investigated intensively in Crewe within the next month. The question is, do we build the standard car you would expect in that segment? Or do we go with lots of carbon fibre and lightweight components? Now that would be a car we could take to the big guns,” said Dürheimer.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Now Bentley has floated the idea of a supercar before. Back in 1999, the company revealed the Hunaudières Concept which packed an 8L W16 engine capable of hitting 350 KPH (about 217 MPH).</p>
<p> </p>

<p>Bentley has lineup expansion on the mind. Auto Express reports that the British luxury car maker is considering adding a smaller model towards the end of the decade. This comes from comments made by Kevin Rose, Bentley's Sales and Marketing boss.</p>
<p>"We’ve said that we’re looking at an SUV, then we’ll replace the Continental and Flying Spur. Then a small car could be something we’d do," said Rose. “A small car would enable us to have something up against Aston Martin and Maserati.”</p>
<p>Rose went onto say, “Price is an important part of exclusivity, so it’s hard to see us coming down to anything under £100,000.”</p>
<p>So what could this entry level model could be? A previous rumorpile report from September says it could be a <a href="http://www.cheersandgears.com/_/bentley-news/rumorpile-bentley-considers-a-four-door-coupe-r1811" rel="">four-door coupe</a> that will use the upcoming MSB platform from Porsche and feature V6 and diesel engines.</p>

<p>Car Magazine is reporting that Bentley is planning a four-door coupe arriving in 2018. The four-door coupe will take on the likes of the BMW M6 Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG. Sitting beneath the Continental GT, the four-door coupe will take the place of Bentley's entry-level model.</p>
<p>The new model will use Porsche's upcoming MSB platform that will make its debut in the next-generation Panamara. Bentley chose the MSB platform since it could work for the next-generation of the Mulsanne, Continental, and the four-door coupe. MSB also offers significant weight savings. For example, the next-generation Continental GT could lose close to 992 pounds.</p>
<p>The four-door coupe will likely utilize V6 and diesel engines, and have a pricetag around €125,000 to €150,000 ($168,650 to $202,380).</p>

<p>UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who was present together with Dr Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen Group for the announcement at Bentley headquarters in Crewe, said: "This £800 million investment and a thousand new jobs from Bentley is fantastic news for both Crewe and for the UK as a whole. It is another important milestone in strengthening our economy.</p>
<p>"One sector that we know is sprinting ahead in the global race is our booming automotive industry. One vehicle rolls off a production line somewhere in the UK every 20 seconds and we have just launched the Government's Automotive Industrial Strategy to help continue this success for years to come.</p>
<p>"I am delighted that Bentley will be building their new vehicle here, not only creating a thousand jobs, but safeguarding many more, as well as increasing training opportunities for highly skilled apprentices."</p>

<p>Bentley's Chairman and Chief Executive, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, added: "This is excellent news for Bentley and for the UK. Bentley is increasingly successful and this new fourth model line will leverage the success of the global SUV market. The support of everyone involved with the Company has been fundamental to this decision, which will ensure sustainable growth for the company."</p>
<p>The SUV will be a thoroughbred Bentley true to the brand hallmarks of luxury, performance, quality and craftsmanship. The styling will set it apart from any other SUV on the road and will be true to the Bentley design DNA. It will be the most luxurious and most powerful SUV in the market. <p>Bentley looks to be to joining the four-door coupe market sometime in the future.</p>
<p>"I definitely wouldn't say no to the idea. With the new Flying Spur, we have a model that supports the Mulsanne, and a coupe with four-doors could sit below that," said Bentley CEO Wolfgang Schreiber to Auto Express.</p>
<p>But don't expect this new vehicle to arrive anytime soon. Schreiber says getting the SUV is still the top priority. </p>
<p>"It's not any time soon, that's for sure, but maybe in the longer term. At the moment our focus is very much on an SUV, because we know the market is there."</p>
<p>If Bentley goes ahead with the four-door sedan, this could help bolster the brand's ambitious goal of selling 15,000 vehicles by 2018.</p>

<p>The fate of Bentley's SUV reportedly has been decided. German business newspaper Handelsblatt reports that Volkswagen board has given go ahead on building a SUV.</p>
<p>When asked by Automotive News Europe for a comment, a spokeswoman from Bentley said,</p>
<p>''We are still waiting for the official green light from Volkswagen. She added that a decision in favor of production looks ''very positive.''</p>
<p>Internally known as 'Falcon', the no-name Bentley SUV is a key part of Bentley's plan to expand its sales volumes. Coming within three years, the SUV will V8 and possibly W12 and hybrid power. The SUV will also not look anything like the EXP 9 F concept shown at last year's Geneva Motor Show. Bentley's new chief designer, Luc Donckerwolke has binned the EXP 9 F design and is reportedly going towards an SUV with a sportier and more contemporary look.</p>

<p>Future Bentley models will be using a new platform that is currently being worked on by Porsche to underpin the next Panamera.</p>
<p>The platform, known as MSB, will use a mix of both steel and aluminium, be able to accept either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and use the next-generation V12 engines. The platform should improve weight-distribution over current Bentleys.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.cheersandgears.com/_/articles/bentley-news/bentley-to-solider-on-with-the-w12-engine-r412" rel="">Since February</a> of this year, Bentley has said they're looking into the <a href="http://www.cheersandgears.com/_/articles/bentley-news/bentley-reveals-some-powertrain-details-on-the-r621" rel="">plug-in hybrid powertrain</a> for their upcoming SUV. But the SUV isn't the only vehicle that Bentley is considering for a hybrid.</p>
<p>Car and Driver learned from former Bentley CEO, Wolfgang Dürheimer that future Bentley models, including the SUV, will be available with a plug-in hybrid option.</p>
<p>Also being worked on for future Bentley model are diesel engines. Dürheimer reveals that prototype vehicles with diesel engines are up and running. Dürheimer didn't reveal any details, but Car and Driver speculates that Bentley will use Audi’s next-generation V8 diesel engine producing more than 400 HP.</p>
<p>There is some bad news with Bentley's powertrains. The venerable 6.75L (or 6 3/4) twin-turbo V8 used in the Mulsanne will be retired. </p>
<p>“I believe the 6.75-liter V-8 can retire,” said Dürheimer.</p>
<p>The reason? Bentley is setting itself to be VW's center for 12-cylinder engines. Having your flagship model using a V8 is a no-no. However, the change won't be happening until the next generation Mulsanne is released, and no one knows when that will be happening.</p>

<p>Its not often we get spy shots of a new or refreshed Bentley, but today is different. Bentley appears to be working on the next on the Continental Flying Spur and some spy photos caught it during some testing.</p>
<p>If you can look past the Mercedes-Benz S-Class veil that Bentley has put on this mule, you can make out a new set of headlights sitting between a new upright grille. Also, the door handles on this mule sit lower than the current Flying Spur. Expect new profile lines and a reworked rear-end with new taillights to appear.</p>
<p>Under the hood, expect some tweaks and changes to the 6.0L twin-turbo W12. Also, the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 introduced into the Continental GT and GTC could make its way into the Flying Spur.</p>

<p>Bentley brought along its polarizing EXP 9 F SUV concept to the Beijing Motor Show this week. Before you ask the answer is no, the EXP 9 F is still the same as we last saw it at Geneva. However, the automaker has revealed the powertrains that will be in the EXP 9 F.</p>
<p>The engines being talked about are 4.0L twin-turbo V8 producing 500 HP and a twin-turbo W12 producing somewhere in the range of 600 HP. Both engines would likely mate to Bentley’s eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. The third powertrain is a plug-in hybrid that would be based around a V6 engine. Bentley predicts an electric range of at least 19 Miles and a 0 to 62-mph time under five seconds for the plug-in variant.</p>
<p>Bentley is currently saying that these powertrains are under consideration, but we wouldn't be surprised if they all are approved.</p>

</ul>
<p></p>
<p><strong>(Beijing, 23 April 2012)</strong> Bentley is offering a vision of the future with a dramatic new Sport Utility Vehicle concept, EXP 9 F, at the 2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. The Company’s designers and engineers have created a compelling new take on the Grand Touring Bentley – a vehicle that feels equally at home at an opera gala performance, on the sand dunes and the overtaking lane of the autobahn.</p>
<p>Unmistakably a Bentley – yet a Bentley like none before it – the EXP 9 F could herald a third Bentley model-line alongside the bespoke Mulsanne and the high performance Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur.</p>
<p>Today a global luxury brand with a network of 160 dealers from Shanghai to Beverly Hills, Bentley has an increasingly diverse customer base spanning every continent. For many customers, a dramatically styled, Bentley all-wheel drive SUV which combines a spacious, versatile cabin and commanding driving position, with Bentley’s hallmark power, performance, advanced technology and hand crafted luxury, would be a natural choice both on and off-road.</p>
<p>The new pinnacle-luxury Bentley would offer exhilarating performance, setting new benchmarks for the SUV sector. The EXP 9 F concept on display in Beijing is based around the Bentley 6.0 litre, twin-turbocharged W12 petrol engine, developing 600bhp and 800 Nm of torque coupled with an 8-speed close-ratio transmission.</p>
<p>A range of other powertrain options are also under consideration. This includes Bentley’s recently launched 500bhp, 4.0 litre petrol V8 as well as a groundbreaking powertrain for the luxury SUV segment – a V6 plug-in hybrid. With a potential 30km range in full electric mode and CO2 emissions of 130g/km, the V6 hybrid would still be capable of a 0 to 100km/h sprint time of less than 5 seconds.</p>
<p><em>“We are very excited by the potential of a high performance, ultra-luxury Bentley SUV. Since we first showed EXP 9 F at Geneva, the response has been overwhelming. Everyone seems to agree that an SUV is a natural fit for Bentley. An exciting range of drivetrain options including a hybrid V6 are under active consideration but one thing is for sure, any Bentley SUV would offer the thunderous performance for which the marque is renowned.”</em> Wolfgang Dürheimer, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors.</p>
<p><strong>BOLD, DYNAMIC, SPORTY DESIGN </strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Key Bentley styling cues re-interpreted for EXP 9 F with innovative detailing<br>
</li>
<li>Sculptured flowing surfaces emphasise power, muscularity and robustness<br>
</li>
</ul>
<p></p>
<p>From a designer’s perspective, EXP 9 F was a dream project, the chance to create a completely new type of Bentley. From the very beginning, the design team had a clear vision for the new Bentley SUV, as Dirk van Braeckel, Director of Design, explains:</p>
<p><em>“EXP 9 F had to represent the absolute pinnacle of the sport utility sector, setting a new benchmark for this type of vehicle. The style had to reflect Bentley’s sporting character despite its radically different package and purpose together with sculptured, flowing surfaces in keeping with the Bentley tradition.”</em></p>
<p>A new class of Bentley allowed the styling team to adopt a more progressive design approach. The exterior is a bold, dynamic statement, combining clean, muscular surfaces with signature character lines, while retaining the qualities of luxury and power – a pure Bentley.</p>
<p>Key Bentley cues such as the matrix grille, round lamps and the strong power-line and haunch along each flank are reinterpreted for EXP 9 F. The ‘hewn from solid’ design language and innovative detailing, emphasise the robust character of this high-luxury SUV.</p>
<p>The designers were inspired not only by the more functional nature of EXP 9 F but by the ‘visible engineering’ of the famous Blower Bentleys. For example, the day-time running lamp apertures also act as the charge cooler air intakes for the twin-turbo W12 engine, each with a dramatic, mesh-covered turbine fan design and ‘rifled’ inner surface finish.</p>
<p>The turbine theme continues with the stunning 23-inch alloy wheels, the design of which complements the sculptured coachwork. The multiple spokes are reminiscent of the shape of turbine fan blades while the centrally mounted wheel nut is a visual reference both to Bentley’s Le Mans racers of the 1920s with centre-lock spinner and to the single nut found on the modern-day Speed 8’s high-tech racing alloys.</p>
<p>At the rear, the swooping lines of the tailgate avoid utilitarian overtones in favour of a distinctly sporting profile, while the ultra-wide, two-part split tailgate offers a high level of versatility when grand touring. The bold design language of EXP 9 F is complemented by twin exhaust tailpipes with ‘rifled’ inner surfaces, their elliptical shapes echoing those of the rear light clusters.</p>
<p>The rear lights are inspired by the forms and details of fighter jet engines, uniquely designed so that they glow from within, spreading their light outwards.</p>
<p><strong>INTERIOR – A FUSION OF INNOVATION, LUXURY AND UTILITY</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Light, airy, contemporary cabin design with exquisite British ‘sporting’ luxury craft detailing<br>
</li>
<li>Contemporary use of touchscreen and tailored interface technologies<br>
</li>
<li>Fresh interpretation of traditional handcrafted materials with highly durable surfaces<br>
</li>
<li>High degree of practicality including versatile rear cabin layout and full-width, two-piece tailgate<br>
</li>
</ul>
<p></p>
<p>Bentley is renowned for its fusion of extremes – technology and craftsmanship, luxury and performance – and the interior of EXP 9 F expresses the resolution of apparent opposites in its use of materials, techniques and technology, as Dirk van Braeckel explains:</p>
<p><em>“The challenge for the interior design team was to create a cabin which provides a blend of luxury and utility. The result is a light and airy environment with a commanding view of the road and a versatile layout which showcases Bentley’s craft and design language in an innovative and contemporary way.” </em></p>
<p>Traditional handcrafted elements such as wood, leather and polished metals such as aluminium, bronze and gunmetal are used to create a sense of British luxury, yet the way they are used sets a fresh and contemporary interior ambience. Soft-touch leather contrasts with highly durable surfaces with the concept car design experimenting with the use of saddle leather for the seat backs, top roll and loadspace – while analogue bezels and dials are paired with TFT ‘virtual’ instrumentation.</p>
<p>Even the luxurious silk wool floormats are reversible – with one side finished in durable, ribbed saddle leather for use when the driver and passengers are dressed for the great outdoors.</p>
<p>The upright dashboard design features a full-width, one-piece wood veneer with a subtly negative surface and instruments with a configurable display. The fluid waist rail design shows pinnacle craftsmanship with chequered, lacquered and oiled finishes. Veneers are sculpted to reveal their solid wood construction. The highly distinctive, carved checkering design on the steering wheel rim, inspired by a shot-gun’s stock, also offers additional grip.</p>
<p>Traditional Bentley ‘bulls eye’ vents have a ‘rifled’ gunmetal inner surface for a more contemporary and functional appearance. The centre console is a blend of functionality and supreme ergonomics with dynamic, architectural layers which help to create a central spine to the cabin. The frame of the console is also a structural component with integrated, sculpted grab handles. The high-gloss black touch-screen surround seamlessly blends into a lacquered veneered surface, emulating the decorative surfaces of a Stratocaster guitar.</p>
<p>The flowing roof design with a panoramic glass panel is inspired by the roll cages of rally cars, expressing both strength and lightness. The innovative, four-zone electro-chromatic ‘sunroof’ allows individual passengers to select their preferred level of light screening</p>
<p>Rear seat passengers can chose between business mode, with generous legroom complete with fold-down keyboard and full internet connectivity via an iPad or tablet or a more reclined position with powered footrest, drinks table and an infotainment screen for movies. A removable Touch Pad located on the centre console manages the rear cabin climate control system and entertainment functions. When the rear seats are not in use, they can be powered forward to create a larger loadspace for sports equipment or luggage.</p>
<p>The EXP 9 F seating is 4+1, with a rear armrest sitting between the two electrically operated ‘Captain’s chairs’. Seats feature a diamond-quilted ‘shoulder line’ in soft-touch leather, echoing the traditional appearance of a British field sport jacket. A sliding drawer between the seats reveals a cooled compartment for champagne and glasses.</p>
<p>Micro leather piping accentuates the lines of the dashboard, centre console and seats and is colour-matched to the coachwork.</p>
<p>At the rear, the lower section of the two-piece tailgate may be used as a viewing bench or picnic table with the upper section providing a canopy to provide protection against the elements. Bespoke picnic hampers are stowed neatly to either side of the load space when not in use, but are located on rails for easy access. An awning extends over the tailgate to protect those seated there; two umbrellas fit into stowage compartments in the rear luggage area for when the rain clouds sweep in. These compartments are heated for rapid drying of wet umbrellas. </p>
<p><strong>COMMANDING DRIVING POSITION AND CONTROL ARCHITECTURE</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>Inspired blend of traditional analogue and TFT touchscreen technology<br>
</li>
<li>Bespoke interface engineering – tailored to the individual with driver-selectable instrumentation modes<br>
</li>
</ul>
<p></p>
<p>As befits a Bentley, the EXP 9 F design concept features a near-infinite choice of driver information and entertainment options. However the design and electrical engineering teams sought to avoid creating a cluttered or confusing driver and passenger environment, presenting only the information that each user needs, when they need it.</p>
<p>As a result, EXP 9 F places key driver information such as 3D navigation in a central TFT panel directly in the driver’s line of sight, where it is flanked by two analogue reverse-read dials. Meanwhile, controls that are shared between driver and front seat passenger, such as cabin temperature, air vents and entertainment, are presented in the central touchscreen and console. The TFT screen deploys from the full-width metal trim to provide a fully integrated extension to the glass surface of the centre console.</p>
<p>Three different driving modes – Comfort, Sport and Off-Road – are selectable according to the road environment and type of journey. Thus the driver information TFT panel would be able to switch between satellite navigation on the motorway to a ‘sump cam’ when negotiating a bumpy track. For sand-dune driving, the speedometer is automatically replaced by a compass while, for high altitude driving, the rev counter is replaced by an altimeter.</p>
<p><strong>EVALUATION, REFINEMENT AND FUTURE PLANNING</strong></p>
<p>When the first generation Continental GT was unveiled in 2003 it represented the renaissance of Bentley as a global luxury icon, subsequent launches such as Mulsanne, Continental Flying Spur saloon and the new Continental GT have seen the Bentley brand growing from strength to strength.</p>
<p>EXP 9 F represents the chance to take Bentley values of design, craftsmanship and engineering excellence into what would be – literally – new terrain for the brand. Bentley’s experience with the all-wheel drive Continental range makes the concept of a Bentley SUV a natural progression for the company.</p>
<p>Customer and public reaction will be analysed following the unveiling of EXP 9 F at Geneva 2012, with the aim of refining the concept further. Above all, Bentley will be listening carefully to the reaction of customers and potential customers throughout the world, prior to making any definitive commitment to production.</p>
<p><em>“A Bentley Grand Tourer doesn’t necessarily have to be a coupé, a convertible or a saloon – it could equally well be an SUV. What’s important is that it should be true to Bentley’s brand values and in line with the desires and needs of our customers.”</em> – Alasdair Stewart, Member of the Board, Sales and Marketing.</p>

<p>When Wolfgang Durheimer became the CEO of Bentley last February, he set out to expand the range from the current pair of vehicle platforms; the Mulsanne and the Continental/Flying Spur. One of those vehicles was the EXP 9 F concept shown at Geneva.</p>
<p>But there were a few more vehicles in the running Durheimer told Motor Trend, but wouldn’t go into detail except for one. The one happens to be a smaller sports car. Durheimer says the designers at Bentley were keen to do it. However, the decision was made to do the SUV.</p>
<p>“In the end the SUV was a better idea. It sits above all its competition,” Durheimer said. “The sports car would have had the Porsche 911 Turbo as opposition.”</p>
<p>Durherimer knows how tough the 911 Turbo is, he was the head of Porsche’s R&amp;D before becoming Bentley’s CEO.</p>
<p>However, Durherimer hasn’t ruled out the sports car for the time being. He says the model of the sports car sits outside the office of company design director Dirk van Braeckel.</p>

<p>Even though Bentley has introduced a new 4.0L twin-turbo V8 engine, that will not stop development of W12 engine.</p>
<p>Ralf Frech, Bentley’s technical director told What Car? the W12 will be getting further improvements.</p>
<p>“The W12 can have the same improvements as the new V8,” said Frech.</p>
<p>Frech added the engine could see a rise from its current 567 HP to 600. The bump in power would be joined by an increase in fuel economy. Under consideration is a eight-speed automatic.</p>
<p>Frech also revealed the company was looking towards hybrids.</p>
<p>“We are looking at the possibility of a hybrid, particularly a plug-in hybrid, but we are waiting for the next generation of technologies because none of the current solutions work,” he said.</p>

<p>Seeing it's best sales since the 2008 global financial crisis, Bentley is hoping to continue it with the introduction of new models during the next few years. Bentley CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer told reporters today the company is deciding whether to build an SUV.</p>
<p>Rumor has it the proposed Bentley SUV will use a W12 engine, priced around $140,000, and come out sometime in 2014.</p>
<p>Duerheimer said the decision will come sometime in the first quarter.</p>
<p>But that's not all. Duerheimer also revealed the company is considering an extended wheelbase version of the Mulsanne and expanding the Continental lineup.</p>
<p>"I can well imagine a new two-seater coupe, a racing version and a car with a new roof system," said Duerheimer.</p>
