Land Rover is rumored to be working on a new entry level model believed to be codenamed L860. This new model would draw heavily on the new Defender for design inspiration for both the interior and exterior. It would be placed on a cheaper and more modern version of the platform under the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. Four cylinder engines are expected as well as a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo that would be connected to a mild-hybrid system.

Feature content for the new vehicle would be, as expected, lower than the Defender given its entry level status. As of now, the rumor is that the new model could be named Land Rover 80 and have a starting price around $33,000.

On the opposite end of the pay scale, Land Rover is also looking at a Land Rover Defender Sport model that would appear at least 4 years from now. This version could get an all-electric powertrain and much more luxury. It would be the flagship of the Defender lineup.

The Land Rover Defender leaked out via an Instagram post from the set of a 007 movie, spotted without camouflage and clearly back from some mudding around. The Defender was supposed to debut at the Frankfurt International Auto Show next month.

The previous Defender stopped production in 2016 after a 67 year run. Emissions and safety regulations eventually forced it out of the markets. The new Defender retains a boxy shape, but is now much more modern in appearence. The headlights have a hooded look in place of the previously circular units.

The Defender will initially be offered in a five passenger configuration, but eventually will also get a shorter length model to compete more directly with the Jeep Wrangler. Those wanting a larger version will be happy too as an 8-passenger version is also planned. Power will come from a range of turbo 4-cylinders, turbo 6-cylinder, a plug-in hybrid, and even a 6-cylinder diesel. One thing the Defender will not have is are solid axles, moving instead to a fully independent suspension.

The Defender will likely end up in the US market as a 2021 model sometime in late 2020.

Jaguar Land Rover unveiled a new Inline 6-cylinder engine, initially to be offered exclusively in the Range Rover Sport HST Special Edition. This all-new engine replaces the 335 hp V6 engine currently supplied by Ford in a deal that JLR says they will end in 2020.

The new Ingenium 6-cylinder produces 394 HP and 405 lb-ft of torque. That power will launch the Range Rover Sport from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 second.

Power is helped along by a 48 volt electric supercharger, able to spool to its maximum 65,000 rpm in less than half a second, the technology nearly eliminates turbo lag. There is also a traditional twin-scroll turbo charger for additional boost. The new engine also has continuously variable valve lift to reduce pumping losses.

The power train is set up with a 48 volt mild-hybrid system that provides torque assistance to the engine during start-stop functions and to feed the electric supercharger.

JLR says that the new engine will reduce particulate emissions by 75% and improve CO2 emissions by 12% over the outgoing engine.

Land Rover's ambition of building an ultra-luxury Range Rover to take on the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan and Bentley Bentayga has been canned.

“We have taken the difficult decision to inform our customers that the Range Rover SV Coupé will not proceed into production. Instead, Land Rover is focusing its resources and investment on the next generation of world-class products," Land Rover said in a statement issued yesterday.

Shown at last year's Geneva Motor Show, the SV Coupé was going to be a special model built by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations. Almost all of the panels were unique to the model. The interior was quite plush with seating for up to four and special leather upholstery. A supercharged 5.0L V8 punches out 557 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Land Rover was planning on building 999 models costing a cool $295,995 (includes a $995 destination charge).

A Land Rover spokesperson said the cancellation isn't due to the lack of demand, though the person wouldn't say how many were sold. Top Gear speculates it may come down to JLR's plan to cut 2.5 billion pounds by 2020.

Working on a second-generation Range Rover Evoque seemed like a tough ask for Land Rover. The model would prove to be very popular in part due its sharp lines and compact shape. While it seemed to be at home in urban areas, the Evoque was quite capable off-road.

At an event in London on Thursday night, Land Rover unveiled the next-generation Evoque. It doesn't look dramatically different than the outgoing Evoque with a high beltline and low roof. There are some traits that have migrated from the larger Velar with similar front ends and flush door handles. The interior has seen the most drastic change with a modern design seen in other Range Rover models. Two touchscreens fill the center stack and control most of the vehicle's functions. Land Rover will offer two eco-friendly upholstery options for the Evoque - a eucalyptus-derived textile and a Kvadrat wool blend.

For North America, the 2020 Evoque will offer two variants of the 2.0L turbocharged Ingenium four-cylinder engine. The base engine produces 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. A new mild-hybrid version pairs the 2.0L with an all-new 48-Volt electrical system. This allows for a smoother start-stop system and slightly more power - 296 hp and 296 lb-ft. Both versions of the turbo 2.0L get paired with a nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.

Fitting a new 48-Volt electrical system meant developing a new architecture to have it fit. The 2020 Evoque is the first Land Rover model to use the mixed-metal Premium Transverse Architecture. Aside from providing a space for the batteries, the new architecture also provides a stiffer structure and lighter weight.

We'll learn more details such as price and release date when the 2020 Evoque makes its North American debut at February's Chicago Auto Show.

Building on the original’s instantly-recognisable design, the new Range Rover Evoque is a sophisticated evolution of the distinctive coupé-like silhouette, typified by its distinctive fast roofline and rising waist that identify the Range Rover family.

"When Range Rover Evoque made its debut back in 2010, it transformed the world of compact SUVs and the new model is set to continue that remarkable journey. This characterful vehicle combines refinement and fun to create that all important emotional reaction that will turn heads and make people smile."
GERRY MCGOVERN
LAND ROVER CHIEF DESIGN OFFICER

NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE: HONED TO PERFECTION

The outstanding volume and proportions are amplified by its pronounced shoulders and powerful wheelarches that, alongside 21-inch wheels, combine to create a strong and dynamic attitude.

The introduction of jewel-like elements such as super-slim Matrix LED headlamps provide a more sophisticated front and rear lamp graphic. Flush door handles add to the smooth, sculpted aesthetic, while sweeping directional indicators create a purposeful signature. Optional R-Dynamic details and burnished copper accents add to the unique appeal.

Inside, the finely crafted design integrates uncluttered surfaces and simple lines with carefully curated premium materials to create a luxurious, minimalist, digital cabin. Technical textiles that use recycled plastics are offered as premium alternatives to leather, such as a Kvadrat wool blend and Dinamica® suedecloth, as well as Eucalyptus and Ultrafabrics™ options. The cabin is designed to be a calm and serene space, ensuring comfortable, healthy and happy occupants, with technologies such as the twin touchscreen Touch Pro Duo system, featuring new, faster software, 16-way seat controls and cabin air ionisation that complement the increased interior space.

NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE: RESPONSIBLE LUXURY AT ITS HEART

"Eight years ago we created a new segment and the world followed. Now we have redefined what it means to be a luxury compact SUV. With design and capability at its heart and the latest technology to hand, the new Range Rover Evoque meets your needs like never before and ensures you reach your destination, no matter the conditions."
FINBAR MCFALL
GLOBAL MARKETING DIRECTOR, JAGUAR LAND ROVER

The compact footprint is almost identical at 4.37m, yet built on Land Rover’s new Premium Transverse Architecture, there is more interior space than before. A longer wheelbase yields 20mm extra rear kneeroom and an increase in small item stowage – the larger glove box and centre cubby can now fit tablets, handbags and bottles with ease. The luggage space is 10 per cent larger (591 litres) as well as much wider and easily fits a folded pram or set of golf clubs, with space increasing to 1,383 litres when the flexible 40:20:40 second-row seats are folded.

The new architecture has been developed for electrification, with a 48-volt mild-hybrid available at launch and a plug-in hybrid model offered around 12 months afterwards. The mild hybrid powertrain is a first for Land Rover and works by harvesting energy normally lost during deceleration thanks to the engine-mounted belt-integrated starter generator, storing it in the under-floor battery. At speeds below 17km/h (11mph), the engine will shut off while the driver applies the brakes. When pulling away, the stored energy is redeployed to assist the engine under acceleration and reduce fuel consumption. The result is a refined, quiet and efficient drive in built-up traffic heavy areas, in addition to efficiency savings.

The lowest emitting CO2 derivative is the 143g/km front wheel drive, manual transmission with 150PS Ingenium diesel engine.

The most popular all wheel drive, automatic transmission vehicles, come with a choice of four-cylinder Ingenium petrol and diesel engines. This is where the 48-volt mild-hybrid system is used to reduce CO2 emissions to as lows as 149g/km and fuel economy from 50.4mpg (5.6l/100km) (based on NEDC Equivalent test procedure).

An even more efficient plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and three-cylinder petrol Ingenium engine will also join the range next year.

Every bit a Range Rover, the compact SUV combines all-terrain capability with all-weather assurance. New Evoque features All-Wheel Drive, as well as a second-generation Active Driveline with Driveline Disconnect to enhance efficiency and Adaptive Dynamics to deliver the optimum balance of comfort and agility. Terrain Response 2 – technology first found on full-size Range Rover – automatically detects the surface being driven on a adjusts the set-up accordingly, while Evoque can now wade through water up to 600mm (previously 500mm).

Combining all-terrain capability with on-road composure, the Evoque’s new MacPherson Hydrobush front and Integral Link rear suspension and Adaptive Dynamics technology deliver not only improved refinement and stability in all conditions, but enables the agile handling that makes Evoque ideal for the tight city streets of many countries around the world.

NEW RANGE ROVER EVOQUE: REACH ANY DESTINATION IN COMFORT AND ELEGANCE

The famed Range Rover command driving position has jumped into the digital age, with a segment-first ‘ClearSight rear-view mirror’ that transforms into an HD video screen. If rear visibility is compromised by passengers or bulky items, the driver simply flicks a switch on the underside of the mirror and a camera feed from the top of the car displays what is behind the vehicle in crisp high definition. The screen provides a wider (50-degree) field of vision and superior visibility in low light.

The new Range Rover Evoque is also the first in the world to feature Ground View technology, which effectively makes the bonnet invisible by projecting camera imagery onto the upper touchscreen to show the driver a 180-degree view under the front of the vehicle. This is useful when negotiating difficult parking spaces, navigating high city centre kerbs or tackling rough terrain and is the realisation of the Transparent Bonnet technology previewed by Land Rover in 2014.

There is a reversing camera as standard on all models, alongside a suite of advanced driver assistance systems. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist, which centres the vehicle in the lane based on road markings as well as maintaining a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Active safety features such as Lane Keep Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Driver Condition Monitor are all available to keep occupants safe.

Evoque is the first Land Rover with Smart Settings, which uses artificial intelligence algorithms to learn the driver’s preference and acts as an onboard butler. In addition to seat position, music and climate settings, Evoque can also control steering column preferences to maximise comfort.

It seems every few months we get a rumor coming out of the woodwork about the upcoming Land Rover Defender. That time has arrived once again thanks to Car.

They're reporting that Land Rover is planning a family of Defender models like they have done with the Discovery and Range Rover. We know some of them such as a pickup we brought to light in April. But Car says there is an electric variant and what is known as the Defender Sport in the cards. The report doesn't provide many details on the former, but we know that Land Rover has floated this idea back in 2013 with a Defender EV concept. As for the Defender Sport, Car states the model will be take on an "on-road and lifestyle flavour," something akin to the Range Rover Sport.

Production is expected to begin in 2020 with the two-door soft and hard tops, and the four-door hard top. Other models like the Sport aren't expected to arrive till later on in the decade.

The next-generation Land Rover Defender has had quite the lengthy development with various changes taking place. We have reported that the new Defender will not look like the DC 100 concepts shown earlier this decade. There is another change afoot.

According to Autocar, Land Rover has decided to make the new Defender to debut the Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA). Previously, the Defender was expected to use the Premium Lightweight Architecture (PLA) - what underpins the Discovery and a number of Range Rover models. But MLA will be replacing PLA as it will be lighter and offer more flexibility to be used in more models. Using the Defender makes sense as its being redone from the ground up, and may explain the lengthy delay in development.

One other interesting tidbit is the Defender will be built in Slovakia, not Great Britain like the previous model. Autocar says the Defender will begin production in 2020.

There are some other tidbits concerning other Land Rover and Jaguar models in Autocar's report

The next-generation Range Rover Evoque is said to be debuting later this year at the LA Auto Show, with sales beginning in the new year. It will use a heavily reworked version of its current platform that will be known as Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA). This will allow a new plug-in hybrid model that will use a new three-cylinder Ingenium diesel engine - don't expect to see it here.

Jaguar's large crossover, known as J-Pace will go into production in 2020. It is understood it will use MLA.

Another rumor about the Ingenium straight-six. Reportedly, JLR will use a high-performance version with electric turbochargers to replace their V8 engines.

A new report from Autocar says that Land Rover has filed a trademark application for "Road Rover". It could be that Land Rover is keeping prospective or like-sounding names under their umbrella, not leading to a new model. But in the case of the Road Rover, there might be more to this.

Back in September, we brought to the light the Road Rover project. This model is being aimed at the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and is reportedly being developed alongside the next-generation Jaguar XJ. As the name suggests, the Road Rover will focus primarily on on-road performance but still have some off-road chops. Power is expected to come from a set of electric motors.

Autocar says the model could debut at next year's LA Auto Show.

The flagship luxury SUV class is becoming more crowded with the Audi Q8, Bentley Bentayga, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan entering the fray. Land Rover is feeling the pressure and has big plans for the next-generation Range Rover to fight them off.

Expected to launch in 2021, the fifth-generation Range Rover will move from the D7u platform to the new Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA). It will be lighter than D7u thanks to the extensive use of aluminum. MLA will also allow Land Rover to install fully-electric powertrains into the model, alongside gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants. But don't expect one at launch as Land Rover reportedly has plans for stand-alone electric model that will have more car-like qualities - Road Rover anyone? A Range Rover EV will launch sometime after the launch, primarily for Asian markets like China.

The current engine lineup, primarily sourced from other automakers will be scrapped. V6 engines will be replaced by inline-six engines from Jaguar Land Rover's Ingenium family. Its unclear whether or not there will be replacements for the V8 engines. Certain engines will come paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Don't expect any dramatic changes to the Range Rover's exterior as there are plans to do an evolution of the current shape. The interior will get new technologies such as an updated version of JLR's Touch Pro Duo infotainment system and connected car technology that will allow you to perform various tasks such as locking/unlocking your front door at home. There is also talk of some talk of autonomous driving features making an appearance.

Land Rover is planning an onslaught of new models. The company has already revealed the limited-run Range Rover SV Coupe and is expected to debut the next-generation Defender in the near future, which could include a pickup. There is talk about three new entry-level models joining the lineup.

Autocar reports that plans for these entry-level model came to light in 2014, but have been shelved and revived within the past few years due to concerns about making a profit. The concerns are still there, but Land Rover is reportedly moving forward with the plans as growth is continuing in the segment. Plans still need to be signed off by the top executives, however.

If approved, the first of this trio is expected to arrive in 2021. But it is unclear which model lineup - leisure, luxury, or utility it will appear in.

Leisure: Expected to sit below the Discovery Sport. Could wear the Freelander nameplate which was last used in 2014.

Luxury: Expected to sit under the Evoque. The Range Rover family has been the one where Land Rover introduces the brand into a new segment.

Utility: Entry-level model for the Defender family.

Out of the three, the leisure model has the greatest appeal as it would fill in "an obvious gap" in Land Rover's lineup. The compact Defender has some supporters with Land Rover's executives to be first as the company is wanting to build out a family of Defender variants.

Whether Land Rover decides to go with one or all three, the platform will be a re-engineered version of the D8 platform known as D10. D8 underpins a number of models including the Discovery Sport and Evoque.

Land Rover is expected to finally show off the new Defender sometime this year as part of the brand's 70th anniversary celebration. But there is already talk about adding more variants, one of those being a pickup.

Autocar reports that Land Rover will launch this model in 2020 to go up against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, Toyota HiLux, and others. Unlike most trucks that offer a range of cab styles, the Defender pickup will only be offered as a regular cab. This is due to the Defender's unibody structure as it is easier to adapt a regular cab layout then a crew cab. Engines are expected to be 2.0L gas and diesel engines from Jaguar Land Rover's Ingenium family.

Land Rover is expected to offer a wide range of specifications from a spartan work truck to a very luxurious to take on the X-Class. The model is expected to be sold in Europe, Africa, South America, and the U.S. The last one is interesting as the majority of pickups sold in the U.S. tend to be extended or crew cabs, which could hurt the Defender pickup if it arrives.

Range Rover sits as Land Rover's crown jewel by providing the ability to go anywhere with a number of luxury amenities. But would Land Rover consider adding a model to sit above the Range Rover to take on the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Rolls' upcoming SUV?

"It would strategically be the wrong thing," said Joe Eberhardt, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America.

"That car defines the Land Rover brand and the Range Rover family; it is really the epitome of that line, and to dethrone that would not be the right move."

Eberhardt explained that by adding a new model to sit above the Range Rover would only hurt the equity in the name. He used the example of Mercedes' Maybach debacle from the previous decade.

"That never worked for a whole number of reasons, but one of them was, what does that say about the S class?" Eberhardt said.

"And they have — from my perspective — fixed that now by saying, 'Well, within the S class there's actually the highest execution of it that happens to be called Maybach that doesn't sit on top of the S class; it's an extension of it.' "

Instead, Land Rover will create "bespoke iterations" of the Range Rover that will allow them to compete with the ultra-luxury SUVs.

If you want a Range Rover Evoque Coupe, you might want to snap up a 2017 model as soon as possible. Motor Authority reports that Land Rover will stop selling the Evoque Coupe in the U.S. at the end of this year. The reason given was due to slow sales. Surprisingly, Motor Authority notes that the Evoque Convertible outsells the coupe.

Last month, Land Rover announced some changes to the 2018 Evoque lineup with the big news being an all-new turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder. The new engine produces either 237 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque or 286 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

Land Rover is introducing a number of updates for the 2018 Range Rover Sport including an updated version of the In Control infotainment system and a slight power boost for the SVR variant. But the big news is for a new model that will be joining the lineup next August.

Meet the 2019 Range Rover Sport P400e, the first plug-in hybrid model from Land Rover. The P400e is part of a new nomenclature that will be appearing on Jaguar and Land Rover models in the coming years. The P represents petrol (gas to us Yanks), 400 is the power output, and e represents some sort of electrification. We're not fans of this new system, but it makes much more sense than Audi's two-digit system.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and an electric motor producing a total output of 398 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. A 13.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides 31 miles of electric-only range. No mention of recharging times however. Land Rover quotes performance figures of 6.3 seconds to 60 mph and a top speed of 137 mph.

The P400e features a special calibrated version of Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 off-road system. This version takes advantage of the electric motor's torque from zero rpm to provide better control during low-speed off-road maneuvers.

Details on fuel economy, recharging times, and pricing will be announced closer to the release date.

2019 MODEL YEAR RANGE ROVER SPORT PHEV

The 19MY Range Rover Sport is the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle to be announced by Jaguar Land Rover. Badged P400e, the new model provides sustainable performance by combining a 296hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine with a 114hp (85kW) electric motor. The 398hp total available power output4 – available through the permanent four-wheel drive system – delivers 0-60mph acceleration in 6.3 seconds (0-100km/h in only 6.7 seconds) and a maximum speed of 137mph (220km/h)3. With an impressive 472-lb. ft. of torque available, the new powertrain mixes dynamic and sustainable performance with traditional Land Rover capability, comfort and refinement.

Thanks to its electrified powertrain, the Range Rover Sport P400e offers an all-electric range of up to 31 miles (51km)1. For the first time Land Rover customers can experience zero-emission off-road luxury with uncompromised all-terrain capability.

Drivers can select from two driving modes to best suit their needs:

Parallel Hybrid mode (the default driving mode) – combines gasoline and electric drive. The driver can optimize battery charge or fuel economy by utilizing one of two charge management functions:

SAVE function – prevents the battery charge dropping below a pre-selected level.

Predictive Energy Optimization (PEO) function – entering a destination in the navigation system enables the feature, which utilizes built-in GPS altitude data for the selected route, to intelligently combine the electric motor and gasoline engine to maximize fuel economy.

EV (Electric Vehicle) mode – enables the vehicle to run solely on the electric motor using the energy stored in the battery, the ideal solution for zero emission journeys.

The new PHEV derivative also includes access to the 7kW on-board charger hidden behind the Land Rover badge on the right of the grille.

The Land Rover Terrain Response® 2 technology has a unique calibration to intelligently and precisely distribute torque from the electric motor, which has no creep speed and maximum torque from zero rpm, to all four wheels. This gives greater control during low-speed off-road maneuvers, reaffirming the outstanding breadth of capability of the Range Rover Sport.

"The new Range Rover Sport strikes a compelling balance between dynamic capability, passenger comfort and efficiency,” said Nick Collins, Vehicle Line Director, Jaguar Land Rover. “The introduction of our advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain is a watershed moment in the history of our performance SUV.”

The motor is powered by a 13.1kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery. Land Rover engineers delivered a set-up that maximizes interior space and provides ideal weight distribution. The 2.0-liter Ingenium gasoline engine is longitudinally mounted, with the 85kW electric motor housed in the ZF® automatic eight-speed transmission at the center of the vehicle alongside the 7kW on-board charger. The access point for the cable is at the front of the vehicle, while the prismatic cell lithium-ion battery is mounted at the rear beneath the trunk floor.

Designed and engineered by Jaguar Land Rover in the UK, the new Range Rover Sport will be produced at the company’s Solihull production facility.

Autocar is reporting that Land Rover is developing a new line of vehicles that will be focused more on-road capability and use electric powertrains. The models will still feature some sort of some off-road capability.

Called Road Rover, the first model is being developed in parallel with the next-generation Jaguar XJ. Both models are expected to share the same architecture which will be made out of aluminum and have the capability of either being fitted with internal-combustion engines and electric powertrains. The model could debut as early as 2019 at the LA Auto Show.

Road Rover has some history for Land Rover. Back in 1950's, the name was used for an experimental model that bridged the gap between Rover and Land Rover.

Land Rover will be offering plug-in hybrid variants of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport next spring. This news comes from Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week.

The models will pair JLR's 2.0L four-cylinder Ingenium gas engine with an electric motor. EV range is said to be about 30 miles when the battery is charged - although the range could be based on the European cycle. No power ratings were given for hybrid system. More details on the plug-in hybrid models will be announced next month.

Land Rover has sold a hybrid version of the Range Rover for a few years in Europe, but it uses a diesel engine.

Land Rover is considering building a halo model for their Range Rover lineup to give the Bentley Bentayga some competition.

"Why not? We've realized that the Range Rover has got this big expanse across its price range, so it's not a very big step to get into Bentayga country," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design chief to Automotive News Europe.

McGovern said that a Range Rover competitor to the Bentayga would have the edge as they have been doing the luxury SUV for much longer.

"Bentley doesn't have the pedigree and authenticity in that particular sector. We've got unquestionable pedigree."

McGovern went on to say that he would like to see the Range Rover family expand. Currently, there are four models in the lineup - Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, and the upcoming Velar. The plans for expansion could cause some overlap, but McGovern doesn't see a problem with this.

"I would argue you could have two Range Rovers exactly the same size but if they had two personalities then they would both have equal appeal but to different customers."

Land Rover will be saying good-bye to the current Defender at the end of January due to stricter crash and emission regulations. But they are the first to admit that reinventing an icon such as the Defender won't be easy.

"It is tough. Any replacement for an iconic vehicle is tough because the enthusiasts are certainly very vocal. They have an opinion on how to do it, but it's a huge opportunity at the same time," said Joe Eberhardt, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover North America.

While iconic, the Defender only appealed to a small, hardcore audience. Land Rover needs the next Defender to be a success, even if that means the next model loses some of its hardcore edge,

"A lot of people love the idea of [the previous De-fender], but they never buy one. While I'm a designer, and I love designing, I'm also a businessman. We need to build a critical mass in order to sustain ourselves in the long term and reinvest," said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's design director.

The next Defender - expected to arrive in 2018 as a 2019 model year vehicle - will come in five different body styles: two two-door models, long-wheelbase four-door, and pickup variants with two and four doors. The design of the new Defender will not look like the concepts we have seen in past years.

"When this vehicle comes out, people will know it's a Defender, it's a modern Defender," said McGovern. "But it will bear no resemblance to those Defender concepts."

No word on powertrains, but expect a range of gas and diesel engines.

With the ongoing mess that is the Volkswagen Diesel scandal, Jaguar Land Rover isn't changing their strategy of selling diesel vehicles for the U.S. marketplace.

“We are convinced of the benefits of diesels from a fuel economy and from an all-wheel drivability perspective, and that hasn’t changed,” said Joe Eberhardt, Jaguar Land Rover U.S. CEO.

Eberhardt says it's "too soon to tell" if the diesel market will be weighed down by the mess caused by Volkswagen, but is confident in their diesel engines in meeting EPA requirements. The company is planning on introducing diesel engines to the majority of their lineup by the end of 2017.

Land Rover has begun selling the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport with a turbocharged 3.0L diesel V6 in September. Eberhardt said that roughly 16 percent of the total sales of the Range Rover and Sport models in September were equipped with the diesel engine (about 332 models).

JLR Spokesman Stuart Schorr tells Automotive News that the diesel V6 has been certified by the EPA, but admits that it is unclear if the EPA will need to recertify the engine.

Earlier this month, we reported that Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division was embarking on its next project - a hardcore off-road brand named SVX. At the time, SVO Head David Edwards didn't go into further detail aside from announcing the project. But British publication Autocar has gotten some details about what the first SVX vehicle will be.

The report says the first SVX vehicle will be the next-generation Discovery due out sometime next year. The SVX variant will follow a fair bit later and showcase the division's technical as well as mechanical ability on dealing with difficult terrain.

Edwards to comment on specific models that are in development, but did say there was a market for these type of vehicles.

“There is a market for more off-road capability, so of course we’re looking at it. In the US there’s a wide snowbelt, in the Middle East there’s extreme sand and in regions such as Australia and South Africa there is a need to cover very rugged terrain," said Edwards.

“There’s a very interesting market for cars with usable capability,” he said. “The established German luxury competitors are there, but we think there’s an opportunity to offer something different and something more. We’re well planned to develop and exploit opportunities in that marke

Jaguar Land Rover's SVO division has been hard at work on producing high-performance and more luxurious variants of Jaguar and Land Rover models. But coming soon, the division will begin leaving their mark on Land Rover with more hardcore off-road variants.

Car and Driver spoke with the head of SVO, John Edwards about what's next. Edwards talked about a new set of models wearing the SVX badge (Sorry Subaru) that will boast “added capability”. Unfortunately, Edwards didn't go any further aside from saying looking at events like the Camel Trophy and Dakar Rally to see the inspiration for the new direction.

The good news is that we won't be waiting too long for a Land Rover SVX model to be introduced.

Since Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division came online earlier this year, they have been primarily focused on building high-performance models such as the Jaguar Project 7 and Range Rover Sport SVR. But a recent interview with the head of SVO shows the division has some other ideas in the works.

“There are four different types of cars we want to do at SVO. There are on-road performance cars, all-terrain performance cars that we haven’t done so far, luxury derivatives and what we’re calling collector’s editions, like the Project 7," said John Edwards, head of SVO.

“On-road performance is fairly easy; you just think about ‘M’ and ‘AMG’ and think how can we apply the same thinking. All-terrain is slightly different; clearly much more appropriate for Land Rover than Jaguar. Land Rover has that all-terrain capability built into all its products, but we need to give customers the permission to use it.”

The last line of Edwards' response is interesting to say in the least. What does he mean by 'we need to give customers the permission to use it?' Again John Edwards,

“For example, the material for the seats; it’s leather versus a material that’s very durable and very hi-tech. It’s about ground clearance, it’s about wheel and tyre combinations, it’s about underbody protection, because actually the capability of the cars is class-leading anyway in most cases.”

Edwards didn't go as far to mention which models are being considered for this change, but hinted that the Range Rover could be one of the first models.

The last time we saw the Discovery nameplate in the U.S. was sometime in the middle-oughts, before the LR3 and LR4 names took its place. Well Land Rover is bringing back the Discovery nameplate as part of their new family. The first model to bear this name is the replacement for the LR2, the Discovery Sport.

The Discovery Sport's styling is reminiscent to the Range Rover Sport and Evoque with similar front and rear end styling, and the distinctive sloping roofline. Compared to the LR2, the Discovery Sport rides on a wheelbase that is 3.2 inches longer and overall length grows 3.7 inches. Inside, Land Rover classifies the Discovery Sport as a 5+2. Yes, the Discovery Sport can seat up to seven. Judging from one of the shots provided by Land Rover, it either has to be a small child or air that those third-row seats can seat comfortably. Standard equipment includes eight-inch infotainment display with navigation, five-inch TFT instrument cluster, dual-zone climate control, and leather.

A 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine provides 240 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. This is paired up to a nine-speed ZF automatic and Haldex all-wheel-drive system. Other mechanical items of note include Land Rover's Terrain Response System which can set the vehicle up for a number of different conditions, and multilink rear suspension.

Land Rover says the Discovery Sport will arrive at dealers in early 2015, with a base price of $38,920 (includes a $925 destination charge).

(MAHWAH, N.J.) – September 2, 2014 - Land Rover today revealed the new Discovery Sport, a versatile premium compact SUV that is the first member of the new Discovery vehicle family. A dynamic design with a compact footprint provides seven-passenger seating in a "5+2" configuration. The 2015 Discovery Sport will deliver a highly refined combination of performance, safety and efficiency thanks to a body shell of high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum, a 240hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive.

New Land Rover innovations debut in the Discovery Sport, including available Autonomous Emergency Braking2 and a new touchscreen infotainment system3.

"The launch of Discovery Sport is a pivotal moment in the 66-year history of Land Rover," said Phil Popham, Jaguar Land Rover Group Marketing Director. "Not only does it mark the introduction of the first new member of our expanding Discovery family, it also brings the versatility of 5+2 seating to the compact premium SUV market."

Designed and engineered at the Land Rover Development Center in the UK, the Discovery Sport will be produced at the company's award-winning manufacturing facility in Halewood, Liverpool, in the United Kingdom. It goes on sale in early 2015 alongside the existing seven-seat Land Rover LR4 in the US, which is sold as the Discovery in over 170 markets worldwide.

DESIGN

The progressive design of the Discovery Sport sets the tone for a new generation of Land Rover Discovery premium SUVs. A dynamic, emotional design sets the Discovery Sport apart from luxury competitors, yet this new model also offers greater versatility than other premium compact SUVs. Its seven-seat capability and elegantly integrated storage areas make the Discovery Sport an ideal family vehicle. High-quality materials and finishes typical of Land Rover also distinguish the driving experience.

Roomy Interior, Compact Footprint

Some compact SUVs go for visual impact. Others prioritize space usage and versatility. The new Land Rover Discovery Sport combines the two and also offers the brand's renowned all-terrain capability, with the ability to scale a 45-degree incline.

Built on a 107.9-inch (2,741mm) wheelbase for ride smoothness and generous middle-row legroom, the Discovery Sport nevertheless could take a "compacts only" parking space with its 180.7-inch. (4.59 mm) overall length. The vehicle's proportions put the wheels out at the corners, contributing to both a low center of gravity and a "planted" stance.

Aside from the overall shape, details including a clamshell hood and distinctive two-bar grille with hexagonal mesh connect it to its' Land Rover identity. Large outboard air intakes and LED fog lamps in the front bumper convey a strong sense of "sport," while the slim, wraparound headlamps are reminiscent of designs used on Range Rover vehicles. Round daytime-running lights (DRLs) are punctuated at four equal intervals to represent the points of a compass, a nod to the vehicle's considerable capabilities.

Halogen headlamps and DRLs will be standard, and available trim upgrades will include Xenon headlamps and LEDs (light emitting diodes) for the DRLs. The tail lamp design echoes the headlamps' slim, wraparound design, accentuating the dynamic bodylines.

A pronounced step from the rear edge of the hood into the rising beltline, combined with a roofline that tapers subtly downward toward the rear, creates a dramatic profile and sense of motion. The C-pillar rakes dramatically forward toward the gloss-black window surrounds, allowing for an optional contrast roof design.

A new blade-like interpretation of the signature Land Rover fender vents sweeps into a dynamic bodyline that continues to the rear of the vehicle. The robust wheel-arch moldings pay homage to Land Rover heritage.

With the design comes function, too, especially with regard to reducing wind noise. An acoustic laminated windshield, along with the vehicle's aerodynamic details -- such as specially shaped A-pillars and door mirrors – help create a hushed cabin. Aerodynamic detailing at the rear helps to reduce road grime or dirt picked up by the body, especially on unpaved roads or in winter driving. Skid plates are functional and create a design element repeated front and rear.

At the rear of the vehicle, the spoiler features inner extensions that improve aerodynamic efficiency. Advanced LED light-pipe technology used for the center high-mount stoplight (CHMSL) uses creates a slender and elegant ribbon of light.

The Discovery Sport will offer a wide palette of exterior color options: Fuji White, Santorini Black, Corris Grey, Indus Silver, Loire Blue, Scotia Grey, Kaikoura Stone, Firenze Red, and a limited edition color, Yulong White.

An available "Black Pack" trim package emphasizes the vehicle's sporty stance, with gloss-black used for the grille, door mirror caps, front fender vents, and badging. The package also includes a choice of 19- or 20-inch alloy wheels. A contrast roof, available in Santorini Black, extends to the base of the A-pillars.

Five distinctive alloy wheel designs will be available with Silver or Gloss Black finishes.

Premium Interior

The Discovery Sport cabin coddles the driver and passengers in true Land Rover luxury. To create a family-friendly SUV, Land Rover invited a large cross-section of families to the development center and watched as they climbed into a variety of current SUVs and performed tasks, such as accessing third-row seating, syncing electronic devices, installing child seats and placing drink containers in cup holders. The results of the study helped designers shape the cabin design and details.

While prioritizing expanded passenger room in all dimensions, the Land Rover Discovery is still able to provide elevated "stadium seating" for the middle row. Second-row passengers sit two-inches (50mm) higher than front-seat occupants, providing a more open feel. The versatile second row seat, in addition to its 60/40 split seatbacks, includes a recline feature and can slide rearward by up to 6.3- inches. In that position, the seat provides 39.8-inches of legroom. The backs of the front seats are contoured to expand second row knee room. The easily accessed child seat LATCH connectors make it easy to swap child seats between vehicles.

A new multi-link rear suspension reduces rear suspension intrusion beneath the luggage area, and new space-efficient electrical modules and wire routing help to unlock additional cabin room. Those elements proved key in allowing Land Rover to offer seven passenger seating with a 5+2 third row for occasional usage. When the third-row seat is folded, luggage volume equals that of the two-row model. Both the second- and third rows can be folded down using one hand to create a spacious load area. A low luggage compartment floor makes it easy to load and unload large items.

Clean Yet Striking Cabin Design

Designed to accommodate families, the Land Rover Discovery Sport nevertheless caters to the driver. That of course starts with the brand's traditional raised Sports Command Driving Position – not just a raised seat height, but also a design that positions the seat, pillars and dash to maximize forward visibility. In a theme similar to Range Rover models, the front cabin design uses the strong vertical lines of the center console and the slimmer horizontal elements of the instrument panel to create a striking though elegant appearance. A prominent center console groups all controls logically. Soft-touch rotary controls and buttons set into a gloss-black surround create a tactile user-interface and are easy for the driver to find under the glare of direct sunlight.

A three-spoke, multi-function steering wheel frames an easy-to-read instrument cluster, with twin analog dials set deeply into cylindrical housings to shield them from glare. A 5-inch color TFT display is positioned between the main gauges presents key data such as fuel levels, gear position, coolant temperature and Terrain Response® modes. Paddle shifters allow manual control for the nine-speed automatic transmission.

Upper trim levels feature twin-needle-stitched leather on the upper reaches of the instrument panel and door surfaces, and the center console's vertical spars are available in a genuine metal finish. Configurable mood lighting, controlled via the central 8-inch touch screen, enhances interior ambience.

All Land Rover Discovery models come standard with leather appointed seating, ranging from grained part-leather on SE models up to luxurious Windsor leather on the range-topping HSE Luxury. Five interior color options include Ebony, Cirrus, Ivory, Almond and Tan.

Convenience at Every Turn

Storage and power points, two features that family buyers demand in a premium SUV, are offered in abundance in the new Discovery Sport. Two center console designs are available, depending on the model grade. The standard console provides space for two cups along with a separate roller storage section. Upper trim levels include a sliding armrest and a roller-style cover for the storage bin, featuring removable cup holders. The space can be reconfigured quickly to securely hold a two-liter bottle.

The front and rear door panels offer ample storage space, as well. Third-row passengers have a storage area, and luggage compartment rails are available for the cargo area.

With even the youngest passengers climbing onboard with a smartphone, iPod or other electronic devices, Land Rover has equipped the new Discovery Sport with up to four 12V power points. Three-row models can have as many as six USB charging sockets, allowing multiple electronic devices to be recharged simultaneously.

Cooling Effect

The standard dual-zone electronic climate control system offers a bonus for rear-seat passengers: air vents that are mounted mid-way up the B-pillar for more effective air distribution. In contrast, some vehicles place rear seat vents at the back of the center console, which reduces legroom for the middle passenger. On models with third-row seating, the climate control adds an independent fan speed control. The third-row air vents are positioned mid-way up the C-pillar.

The climate control automatically detects windshield misting and activates the defogger, and an air-quality sensor switches to recirculation mode should high pollution levels be detected. A driver-selectable ECO mode optimizes the air-conditioning system and automatic transmission for maximum fuel efficiency.

Personalization

The Land Rover Discovery Sport will offer a comprehensive range of personalization options, including:

• Black Pack: a gloss-black grille, door mirror caps, front fender vents, hood and tailgate lettering and a choice of 19- or 20-inch alloy wheel designs

• Contrast roof in Santorini Black or Corris Grey that extends to the base of the A-pillars

• A range of seven distinctive alloy wheel designs – including the striking Aero Viper – is available with a selection of Silver or Gloss Black finish, depending on wheel design

• Front and rear undershields, together with tubular stainless-steel side steps with a highly polished finish, underscore the vehicle's all-terrain capability. Noble-silver painted door-mirror caps complement the look

• A full panoramic roof with a dark tint and a special surface treatment for solar protection makes the cabin feel even more spacious. A power-retracting shade offers additional sun shielding

• Available accessory luggage compartment rails create a highly configurable luggage area, and can be specified in conjunction with a Retention Kit featuring a telescopic crossbeam and retractable band to secure loose items

Also available as dealer accessories:

• Headrest-mounted iPad® holders for rear-seat passengers feature quick-release for added security

• A center armrest cooler/warmer box finished in premium leather provides convenient storage for food and drinks and maintains items at a desired temperature

• A full range of rubber mats and liners help to protect carpets and the luggage compartment from mud and wear-and-tear under heavy use

LAND ROVER ENGINEERING

At the core of the all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport is the outstanding capability that's been the hallmark of the company's vehicles for nearly half a century. As it has done with all its models, Land Rover instilled the Discovery Sport with a compelling combination of off-road capability and on-road dynamics. Interior packaging and safety innovations make the new model an ideal family vehicle, while extensive use of intelligent lightweight materials and an efficient powertrain reduce fuel costs and environmental impact.

Lightweight Unibody with Multi-link Rear Suspension

The Land Rover Discovery Sport body shell uses a combination of high-strength steel, ultra high-strength boron steel and lightweight aluminum. Hot-stamped boron steel is used in key parts of the crash safety cell, including the A- and B-pillars, enabling them to have a slim design for excellent visibility.

The hood, front fenders, roof and tailgate are aluminum. Using the lightweight material at the vehicle's extremes, far from the center of gravity, contributes to enhanced agility.

The new platform shares some front end architecture and components with the award-winning Range Rover Evoque, including a magnesium crossbeam for high torsional rigidity and reduced weight.

Front suspension uses steel lower control arms and aluminum suspension knuckles. Hydraulic rebound stops in the suspension struts significantly reduce noise entering the cabin when the suspension rebounds after encountering a pothole or obstacle.

The compact multi-link rear suspension, which uses some aluminum components for reduced weight, offers numerous benefits, including on-road agility, quiet ride, long wheel travel and maximized cabin room. At 13.4 -inches (340mm), wheel articulation is excellent. Because the suspension mounting points make only a minimal intrusion into the luggage area, second-row seating can slide and recline past the mounting points for maximum legroom.

The lower control arm and rear suspension knuckle are produced from thin-walled hollow aluminum castings, an innovative lightweight solution that also increases strength. The rear suspension is mounted on a light and stiff steel subframe, which promotes excellent steering response and interior quietness.

Turbocharged Power and Efficiency

The all-new Land Rover Discovery gets its efficient power from the same turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine as the Range Rover Evoque. A nine-speed automatic transmission and Haldex All-Wheel Drive are both standard, for confident on-road handling and all-terrain capability.

The 2.0-liter gasoline engine features an advanced low-inertia turbocharger, high-pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to deliver exceptional driveability throughout the rev range. Twin balancer shafts ensure high levels of refinement. Smart regenerative charging prioritizes charging the battery while the vehicle is decelerating, reducing the electrical system's demands on the engine.

Producing 240hp at 5,500rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,750 RPM, the all-alloy engine offers excellent performance and flexibility from a light, compact package. Specially treated piston rings and tappets minimize friction for optimal efficiency, and a sheet-metal exhaust manifold helps to warm up the engine quickly to reduce emissions during short drives.

Nine-speed Automatic Transmission

The ZF 9HP48 nine-speed automatic transmission, also featured in the Range Rover Evoque, uses closely spaced gear ratios to provide seamless response and allow for a very low first gear and powerful mid-range acceleration. Second gear, which is approximately equivalent to first gear in transmissions with fewer ratios, is used to start off from a standstill to maximize efficiency and refinement. Drivers can, however, manually select first gear when maximum acceleration is required or for a low ratio in challenging off-road situations.

A rotary gearshift controller rises silently from the center console when the engine is started. Steering wheel paddle shifters offer complete driver control for dynamic driving, precision off-road maneuvers and manual gear selection while towing.

The transmission's quick gear changes are smooth, in keeping with the brand's penchant for refinement. A skip-shift function allows the transmission to downshift directly between non-consecutive gears rather than sequentially cycling through gears in between. Should the driver demand too low a gear, the transmission will remember the request and select the gear once engine speed slows to an appropriate level.

An adaptive-shifting system matches the transmission's responses to the driver's inputs. For example, it selects higher gears more quickly and holds them for longer periods during relaxed driving, and it responds to a more dynamic driving style by holding lower ratios for longer and downshifting more quickly.

Dual Personality: Equally Capable On- and Off-Road

The all-new Discovery Sport delivers on the promise of outstanding on-road refinement, comfort and handling in concert with all-terrain capability that's essential to the brand's DNA. Exhaustive tests on everything from British country roads to the Nürburgring Nordschleife ensured the on-road refinement Land Rover customers expect, while a punishing off-road test regimen prepared the Discovery Sport for off-pavement travel.

With all-wheel-drive traction and long-travel suspension for excellent articulation, the Discovery Sport provides impressive all-terrain performance. The body has been designed to cope with challenging off-road terrain, with 8.3-inches (212mm) of ground clearance and approach, departure and breakover angles of 25, 31 and 21 degrees, respectively. The Discovery Sport can scale gradients of up to 45 degrees. In extreme situations, lower trim on the front bumper can be removed to increase the approach angle.

Off-road driving, or driving in inclement weather, can often involve water along the way. That is why Land Rover positioned the vehicle's air intake high above the wheel arch to prevent water entry into the engine. A rigorous testing procedure ensured watertight sealing for all doors.

Another particularly demanding part of the testing process examined the ability of the vehicle to drive away from a waterlogged condition. During this extreme torture test, the Discovery Sport is parked in standing water, the watertight doors are opened, and the interior is intentionally flooded. After 30 minutes in the water, Land Rover tests the ability for the vehicle to restart and drive.

All-Wheel Drive, Terrain Response® and a Suite of Off-Road Technologies2

The intelligent full-time all-wheel-drive system continuously varies the torque split front-to-rear to deliver outstanding performance and traction on all surfaces. The latest electronically controlled Haldex center coupling can respond to wheel slip and driver demands faster than a purely mechanical coupling.

Land Rover Terrain Response® maximizes the capability of the Discovery Sport in challenging conditions. Controlled through an intuitive interface on the center console, Terrain Response® is designed to precisely tailor the vehicle's steering, throttle response, gearbox, center-coupling and braking and stability systems to the demands of the terrain. Terrain Response® features four settings: General; Grass/Gravel/Snow (for slippery conditions on- and off-road); Mud and Ruts, and Sand2.

Terrain Response® is backed up by a suite of technologies that support off-road and slippery-condition driving. These include:

• Hill Descent Control® (HDC) maintains a set speed while negotiating steep inclines off-road2

• Gradient Release Control® (GRC) progressively releases the brakes when moving away on an incline for maximum control2

• Roll Stability Control (RSC) designed to detect the onset of a rollover and applies the brakes to the outer wheels to bring the vehicle under control2

• Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) corrects oversteer and understeer by reducing engine torque and/or applying brakes to individual wheels2

• Electronic Traction Control (ETC) reduces torque and/or applies a braking force to individual wheels to prevent wheelspin2

• Engine Drag Torque Control (EDC) helps to prevent lock-up under heavy engine braking in slippery conditions by increasing engine torque to the affected wheels2

Agility That Earns the "Sport" Title

A lightweight bodyshell with high torsional rigidity, along with a long wheelbase and a squat, muscular stance, provide an ideal foundation for crisp steering response, supple ride comfort and sporty agility for the new Land Rover Discovery Sport. Long-travel suspension mounts to extremely stiff isolated subframes, with large-diameter gas damper struts at the front and all-new multi-link suspension at the rear. Body roll is well contained, and a high level of suspension compliance ensures the tires' contact patches remain in touch with rough road surfaces.

Electric Power Steering

The electric power-assisted steering system (EPAS) has been tuned for excellent driver feedback on the road, and the steering rack is solidly mounted to the front subframe to enhance precision. Variable-ratio steering uses a slower ratio around the center position for improved precision at speed, and a faster ratio when additional steering lock is applied to increase agility on winding roads. The transition from a slower to faster ratio is linear and seamless; the driver is simply aware of a highly responsive steering system.

The steering is light and responsive with additional power assistance at lower speeds for enhanced maneuverability, but firmer and with less assistance at higher speeds.

EPAS removes the need for engine-driven hydraulic steering assistance, reducing parasitic losses and therefore fuel consumption. As an added benefit, EPAS enables the available Park Assist feature, which helps to identify suitable parallel and perpendicular parking spaces and can automatically steer the vehicle into place2.

Advanced Braking Technology

The Discovery Sport is equipped with vented 12.8-inch (325mm) front and 11.8-inch (300mm) rear disc brakes, providing reassuring stopping power. The front brakes are of a new design, with a stiffer caliper and new-generation pads to enhance braking, improve feel and reduce brake dust.

Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) is designed to automatically increase the amount of brake pressure when the system senses an emergency situation; Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) helps to ensure the ideal braking balance between the front and rear wheels in extreme situations, and Corner Brake Control (CBC) helps to ensure stability during heavy braking in a corner2.

An available Autonomous Emergency Braking system can help avoid collisions or mitigate their consequences. The system uses stereo cameras mounted next to the rear-view mirror designed to detect objects that could pose the risk of a collision, such as slowing traffic. Operational between speeds of 3-50 mph (5-80km/h), the system helps to avoid collisions below 32 mph (50km/h), and reduces the severity of an impact at speeds below 50 mph (80km/h). If the system deems a collision likely, it will alert the driver with a visual and audible warning. If the driver takes no action and a collision is judged unavoidable, a driver warning is triggered while the system applies full braking pressure to bring the vehicle to a stop2.

Driver-assistance systems

• Optional Park Assist identifies suitable parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, allowing the driver to operate the accelerator, brake and transmission while the vehicle autonomously steers on both entry to and – in the case of parallel parking spaces – exit from the space. Parking sensors offer additional assistance2

• Optional Lane Departure Warning is designed to gently vibrate the steering wheel to warn a driver who may be unintentionally drifting out of a lane2

• Optional Traffic Sign Recognition is designed to monitor road signs and displays a reminder of the speed limit or overtaking regulations on the navigation screen2

• Standard Trailer Stability Assist detects trailer instability and brakes individual wheels to help the driver correct a potentially hazardous situation2

• Standard Tow Assist and Tow Hitch Assist use a camera system to help the driver hitch a trailer and predict its path while reversing2

• Standard automatic headlamps and rain-sensitive wipers activate autonomously according to conditions

Airbags

The Land Rover Discovery brings the brand's best active and passive safety ideas together. The comprehensive occupant safety package includes driver and passenger front airbags, knee airbags, side curtain airbags and thorax airbags4.

Exhaustive Testing

Land Rover tested 200 Discovery Sport prototypes over a combined total of 6,800 weeks to ensure exceptional levels of reliability, off-road capability and on-road dynamics. A testing regime that spanned the globe encompassed extremes of altitude, temperature and terrain. Thousands of hours have been invested in tackling the challenging Big Red sand dunes in Dubai, driving through deep snow and over icy lakes in Sweden, and traversing the deep mud and clay and steep inclines of the Land Rover Eastnor Castle off-road facility in the UK. Other test locations included the US, Spain, Morocco, Germany, and Austria.

Advanced Infotainment and Connectivity3

An all-new infotainment system for the Discovery Sport integrates voice-controlled satellite-navigation, WiFi hotspot connectivity and an all-terrain mode.
The next Land Rover Defender will be coming out in the next few years and it will not look like the DC100 Concept shown a few years back. According to Autocar, the DC100's was considered to be too bland to wear the Defender nameplate. Gerry McGovern, the design director said the new model will look completely different from the concept and has been 'frozen'.

The next Defender will reportedly use the platform from the Range Rover, albeit with changes to make it stronger.

Those in the market for a performance-oriented luxury SUV have a new option. Land Rover has revealed the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR, which is one of the first production models from Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO).

The SVR differs from the standard Sport model with more aggressive front and rear fascias, quad exhausts, SVR badging, and twenty-one inch alloy wheels. Inside are new sport seats, with the front getting sixteen-way adjustments; and aluminum trim. Carbon fiber trim is optional.

Under the SVR's hood is a 5.0L supercharged V8 that has been massaged to get 550 horsepower 502 pound-feet of torque. A revised engine computer and eight-speed ZF automatic transmission finish off the powertrain. 0-60 MPH is clocked in at 4.5 seconds (half a second quicker than the Range Rover Sport Supercharged) and hits a limited top speed of 162 MPH.

Under the skin, SVO modified the Range Rover Sport SVR's suspension; and recalibrated the active rear locking differential and torque vectoring system. The SVO team hasn't forgotten that SVR is still a Land Rover, so the model still features a two-speed transfer case, a maximum ride height of 9.3-inches from the air suspension, and Land Rover's Terrain Response System.

Pricing for the 2015 Range Rover Sport SVR will begin at $110,475. No release date has given at this time.

Producing a lap time of 8 minutes 14 seconds on Germany's legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife racetrack, the Range Rover Sport SVR unleashes the full potential of the lightweight and robust all-aluminum architecture, while retaining refinement, luxury and off-road capability.

Speaking ahead of its global premiere, John Edwards, Managing Director of Land Rover Special Operations, said: "The Range Rover Sport SVR is a natural progression beyond the core vehicle's outstanding on- and off-road capabilities and leading-edge design. It's exhilarating performance will satisfy a particularly demanding customer set."

"A thorough range of revisions specially developed by Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations combine to make this premium derivative even more distinctive both inside and out, as well as taking its dynamic capabilities to the next level without impacting on comfort, refinement or all-terrain versatility. The Range Rover Sport SVR is truly the world's most capable performance SUV."

The Range Rover Sport SVR – designed, engineered and built in Britain – amplifies the engineering integrity, robustness and attention to detail that are Land Rover hallmarks. The Range Rover Sport was introduced in 2005, with over 500,000 vehicles built to date. The Range Rover Sport SVR builds on the success of the Range Rover Sport. Its all-aluminum unibody reduces weight by 39 percent compared with its predecessor and provides a strong, stiff and lightweight structure on which to create the Range Rover Sport SVR. The Range Rover Sport SVR was created by the Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations team and will be built alongside existing models and sold through the Land Rover retailer network.

Section 1 - THE MOST POWERFUL LAND ROVER VEHICLE EVER

The heart of the Range Rover Sport SVR is an evolution of the JLR all-aluminum 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine. With cast-iron cylinder liners and cross-bolted main bearing caps, this engine features a combination of strength, performance and refinement.

To increase performance, engineers at Special Vehicle Operations have tuned the Bosch management system and increased maximum supercharger boost pressure resulting in power and torque increases of 40hp and 41lb-ft respectively. Producing 550hp and 502lb-ft of torque, the SVR boasts a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top track speed of 162 mph.

The Range Rover Sport SVR design enhancements include larger air intakes in the front bumper to increase airflow to two intercoolers that reduce the temperature of pressurized air from the supercharger before it enters the engine.

In Dynamic mode, sport driving characteristics are intensified thanks to sharper throttle response and more incisive gearshift logic. In addition, the fuel supply is controlled on deceleration, creating a characterful crackle through the exhaust.

The engine's advanced and highly efficient design characteristics include: low internal friction; high-pressure direct injection with a centrally mounted, multi-hole, spray-guided injection system; dual independent variable camshaft timing (VCT); and an advanced intelligent Stop/Start system that stops the engine instead of idling and instantly restarts it when the driver is read to proceed.

Section 2 - DYNAMICALLY FOCUSED DRIVELINE

The smooth and responsive eight-speed ZF® 8HP70 automatic transmission has been retuned for the available performance. With a sure-footed four-wheel-drive system, the transmission receives additional torque in its lower gears to achieve a thrilling 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds1.

Equipped with eight close ratios, shift times have been reduced by up to 50 percent through the implementation of rapid and precise fuel cut-offs during upshifts. This leads to shorter, more visceral and audibly crisper shifts while utilizing engine inertia for a sense of acceleration through the shift. It also creates a more immediate connection to the vehicle, and ensures the engine is constantly within its power band.

The transmission's adaptive shift strategy monitors acceleration and brake inputs, lateral cornering forces, kickdown requests and even the severity of gradients, before choosing one of 25 pre-determined programs to seamlessly adapt to driver behavior and road conditions. Sportier driving triggers more aggressive gearshifts and defers upshifts.

To improve dynamic stability, the throttle is automatically blipped during high-speed downshifts, smoothing the transition between ratios. This function also allows the transmission to perform a series of rapid downshifts under hard braking with maximum refinement and control. Corner Recognition maintains one gear through a turn to improve stability while also ensuring a keen response once the bend straightens and the driver can accelerate. Similarly, the transmission recognizes a series of overtaking maneuvers and maintains a lower gear to ensure instant acceleration.

Despite this performance focus, there is no impact on refinement: the ZF eight-speed transmission's torque converter operates for smooth take off in first gear, but is bypassed by a locking clutch from second gear. This creates a direct link between the transmission and the driven wheels.

The transmission is controlled via either steering wheel-mounted paddle shift controls, or the gear lever. Drivers can default to full automatic mode, make occasional manual interventions, or push the gear lever to the left to gain manual control. In manual mode, gear shifts are made via the paddle shift controls, or by pushing the gear lever forwards for downshifts and pulling back for upshifts, echoing the shift logic of racing cars. In Dynamic mode, the shift strategy will not upshift at redline and will only downshift to prevent engine speeds below idle speed.

The Range Rover Sport SVR has been engineered to deliver an incredible breadth of capability. The SVR is fitted with permanent four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case, with a low-range option for demanding terrain, and a 50/50 percent torque split front-to-rear.

Optimum traction is maintained with the aid of an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch in the center differential, which distributes torque between the front and rear axles – up to 100 percent can be channeled to either axle in extreme conditions. Sophisticated electronic traction-control systems further contribute to capability.

The transfer case offers selectable low- and high-range, using a two-speed fully synchronized shift on the move' system which allows the driver to change between the two at up to 37 mph for exceptional flexibility. High-range provides a direct drive ratio of 1:1, while the low-range ratio is 2.93:1, providing an extremely low crawl speed. This allows for an overall crawl ratio of 45.542:1.

To optimize traction and stability, the Dynamic Active Rear Locking Differential has been recalibrated. The differential now locks earlier and to an increased extent, satisfying performance-minded drivers and ensuring torque is transferred to the rear wheel with most traction, increasing agility2.

Torque Vectoring is also uniquely recalibrated. It uses the car's brake system to create the effect of a torque-vectoring differential, constantly balancing the distribution of engine torque between the four wheels during cornering, for improved grip and steering, and reduced understeer2.

The system monitors the vehicle 100 times per second via the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) module. As the car accelerates through a corner, the system uses yaw sensors to detect the beginning of understeer. Imperceptible levels of braking are then used to correct the vehicle attitude, while engine torque is transferred to the outside wheels, which have more grip, thus maintaining traction and steering control.

Section 3 - LEADING-EDGE DESIGN

The exterior design and luxurious interior of Land Rover's premium sports SUV have been enhanced for the Range Rover Sport SVR with a range of dynamic improvements.

Designed exclusively by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO), the Range Rover Sport SVR makes a strong visual statement. These include a front bumper with muscular trapezoidal air intakes, dark Range Rover script on the clamshell hood, which also features revised vents, and a new grille in a dark finish that contrasts with the headlights' LED signature lighting. At the side of the vehicle, an all-new fender incorporates a distinctively designed vent, while unique side moldings add muscularity. At the rear, prominent Range Rover Sport SVR badging and a pronounced high-level spoiler with a centrally mounted brake light signal the vehicle's sporting intent. The unique rear bumper features a gloss black diffuser, which incorporates unique quad exhaust pipes, instantly differentiating this high-performance derivative.

The larger air intakes in the front bumper create additional airflow for the charge air coolers that channel air to the powerful 550hp supercharged engine.

The new rear spoiler reduces lift, and has been carefully balanced with the new front bumper. Beneath the front bumper a new NVH comb is fitted, which reduces wind noise and improves aerodynamic efficiency. It also reduces front-end lift to help the front tires retain high levels of grip during enthusiastic driving. The deeper front bumper's more aggressive lower section can also be removed for extreme off-roading.

Additional brake cooling has also been introduced for the six-piston Brembo brake set-up, ensuring optimal stopping power.

A choice of seven color palettes are available, including the striking Estoril Blue, exclusive to the Range Rover Sport SVR. A Santorini Black contrast roof is available as standard equipment and combines with body-color side moldings to emphasize the muscular stance of the SVR. Exterior trim detailed in Black and headlights with black casings round-off the design enhancements, creating a visually imposing road presence.

Inside, Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations has differentiated the SVR with distinctive leather sports seats. These comfortable seats offer additional lateral support during spirited driving. Full 16-way electric adjustment is offered and the vehicle's Sports Command Driving Position and generous rear legroom are unaffected.

The sporting theme continues with the rear seats, which have been redesigned to echo the performance-oriented front seats. The result is an eye-catching four-seat aesthetic, with space for an occasional fifth passenger. The new rear seats recline for maximum comfort and offer full 60/40 folding capability and up to 62.2 cubic feet (1761 liters) of load space.

The seats are finished in luxurious Oxford leather with ribbed, quilted centers, Ebony Black top stitching, eye-catching reflective piping, and all feature the Range Rover Sport SVR logo. Four striking interior color options are available: Ebony Black; Ebony Black and Cirrus White; Ebony Black and Pimento Red; Ebony Black and Tan.

As standard, the vehicle is supplied with turned aluminum interior trim details, with optional carbon fiber trim for the door panels, center console, dashboard and steering-wheel bezel available.

"The Range Rover Sport SVR is the ultimate in premium performance," said Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, Gerry McGovern. "Crafted by Land Rover's 'Special Vehicle Operations', its performance-focused design revisions clearly differentiate the most powerful Land Rover vehicle ever produced from existing derivatives with its ground-hugging, assertive stance and additional road presence. This striking evolution retains the trademark DNA for which the Range Rover Sport is so widely acclaimed."

Section 4 – EXHILARATING SOUND TRACK

Differentiated by quad exhaust pipes, the Range Rover Sport SVR is equipped with a two-stage active exhaust featuring electronically controlled valves that optimize sound quality, performance and aesthetics. The new exhaust features larger diameter underfloor pipes – up from 2.2-inches (55mm) in the Supercharged V8 to 2.4-inches (60mm) – for enhanced flow characteristics.

A new exhaust soundtrack audibly distinguishes the Range Rover Sport SVR, with a purposeful modulation at lighter throttle openings and a higher-frequency staccato at peak performance. The electronically controlled active exhaust valves largely eliminate exhaust flow noise, creating pure engine sound through to peak engine speeds. At lower engine speeds, the electronically controlled valves close off two tailpipes. As engine speed and load increases – typically around 3000rpm – the valves open, allowing greater flow through all four exhaust pipes. A symposer enriches sound quality filtering desirable induction noise into the cabin.

Together with modified engine tuning that cuts the air charge far more quickly when the driver lifts off the throttle, the new exhaust also creates a pronounced crackle during deceleration. If desired, the driver can also select a quiet mode at any engine speed. The new active exhaust system has also been designed to maintain the outstanding off-road performance of the Range Rover Sport SVR should owners decide to use its 33.5-inch (850mm) wading capability.

Section 5 – HANDLING THAT EXCITES

The Range Rover Sport has been praised for its high levels of comfort and extremely agile handling. The SVR takes that capability to the next level courtesy of extensive development on British country roads, German autobahns and the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Enhanced suspension and steering

The Range Rover Sport SVR chassis has been tuned for enhanced agility. Constructed mainly from lightweight aluminum components, the suspension is fully independent and double-isolated, with wide-spaced double wishbones at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear. A cross-linked, four-corner air suspension and Adaptive Dynamics with continuously variable magnetorheological dampers is featured in the SVR. Adaptive Dynamics active damping monitors vehicle movements at least 500 times a second, adjusting the damping force almost instantaneously in response to changing road-surface conditions and driver inputs.

The air springs feature a modified piston profile for sportier handling and composure, while the Adaptive Dynamics damper settings have been tuned for increased agility. Rear suspension subframe bushings, upgraded by 20 percent, ensure a connected response to driver inputs.

While offering a level of performance normally associated with performance cars, the vehicle's high levels of comfort and off-road capability have not been sacrificed: the ride quality retains its compliance and the ride height is unaltered, with an adjustable range from 2 inches (50mm) in access mode up to 9.3-inches (235mm) for off-roading. Wheel travel also remains identical, with 10.2-inches of movement at the front and 10.7-inches (272mm) at the rear. Wading depth continues to be 33.5-inches (850mm). Six Terrain Response® 2 settings continue to be available: General, Dynamic, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl. Alternatively, the "Auto" setting intelligently selects the most appropriate mode.

The revised Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) system featuring variable-ratio, speed-sensitive assistance, with added weighting for a more immediate and connected feel at speed. Unlike hydraulically assisted power-steering systems, EPAS does not rely on an engine-driven pump, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

All vehicles will be equipped with Range Rover Sport SVR-specific 21-inch alloys and all-season 275/45 R21 tires.

Active-Roll Control tuned for flatter, faster corneringWorking in conjunction with air springs and Active Dynamics continuously variable dampers, the two-channel Active-Roll Control (ARC) enhances high-performance capability. Replacing traditional anti-roll bars, ARC employs actuators powered by a hydraulic pump to keep body roll in check, adapting to body accelerations up to 1000 times a second. Compared with earlier iterations with a single actuator, ARC uses two actuators to respond independently to lateral roll at each axle, providing greater precision. When the system senses vehicle roll, ARC applies an opposing torque, keeping the body level and composed. ARC allows the Range Rover Sport SVR to corner flatter and faster. Dynamic mode further reduces body roll for maximum handling capability.

While ARC is tuned to behave uniquely for the Range Rover Sport SVR during performance driving, it uses the same software map as other Range Rover Sport models when off-road use is detected by on-board sensors. This maintains excellent off-road capability.

Section 6 – DEVELOPED AT THE NÜRBURGRING

With 13 miles (20.8km) of challenging twists and turns, high-speed straights, daunting crests and compressions, the Nordschleife is the ultimate test for any performance car. The SVR was subject to exhaustive testing, with prototype vehicles completing nearly 1000 laps around the legendary circuit. During testing and development, the SVR recorded a Nordschleife lap time of just 8 minutes 14 seconds. The SVR made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK, powering up the 1.16-mile course to great fanfare from the motorsports community.

After sixty-seven years in production, and more than two million models being produced, the Land Rover Defender will cease to be.

According to Automobile Manufacturing News, Land Rover has made the decision to end production of the Defender in December 2015. The decision is due to the current model not being able to meet the new emission standards that are being introduced all-over.

"A replacement vehicle will join the Land Rover range, but the Defender in its current format is coming to an end," said a Land Rover spokesman.

What that will be and when the replacement will debut are up in the air at the moment.

A new report from Edmunds says that Land Rover will bring over diesel-hybrid powertrain for its Range Rover and Range Rover Sport to the U.S. within the next couple of years.

Previous reports said that Land Rover would only sell the the diesel-hybrid Range Rover in Europe due to the strict emissions regulations in the U.S. and the demand for diesels being on the low end.

However, Land Rover has changed its stance due to Europe's upcoming Euro 6 emissions standards that will take effect in September 2014. The Euro 6 emissions standards will bring Europe more in line with the U.S.' standards, which will allow manufacturers to bring vehicles over to the U.S. without that many changes.

Diesels have been also gaining in popularity here in the U.S. Recent figures show diesel car and SUV sales in the U.S. grew 24 percent from 2010-2012.

That's not everything. Edmunds says turbodiesel V6 and V8 engines are being readied for the U.S.

Counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights are engineered into this 90 degree V6 to maximize smoothness and refinement.

Land Rover's Intelligent Stop/Start system helps enhance fuel efficiency in stop and go driving by reducing engine idling under certain conditions which saves fuel and cuts emissions.

Spray-guided direct injection (SGDI) delivers precise quantities of fuel directly into the combustion chambers at pressures of up to 150bar (2175PSI). The fuel is injected in a matter of milliseconds several times during each combustion cycle, creating a more homogenous air-fuel mixture for cleaner and more efficient combustion. A high compression ratio of 10.5:1 further improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The latest-generation Roots-type twin vortex supercharger is mounted in the 'V' of the engine and the charge air utilizes an air/liquid intercooler. A new Bosch engine management system controls all engine functions.

When coupled to a high-strength yet lightweight all-aluminum structure this new powertrain further builds on the efficiency gains of the new Range Rover.

Land Rover is embarking on a plan to expand its lineup to 16 models by 2020 to cut a big slice out of the booming SUV market. Autocar spoke with Land Rover’s design director Gerry McGovern who explained the company would separate the range into three categories: luxury, leisure and utility.

The 'luxury' lineup will be made up of the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Evoque. There also happens to be six models currently on the planning table that include a Evoque XL and convertible, and a three-door baby Range Rover.

Next is the 'leisure' lineup which will be made up the Freelander (LR2 in the states) and LR4. There will be a new LR2 that will be similar in size to the Evoque and come in a five- and seven-seat versions. The next LR4 could switch to an aluminium platform, and compete with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML.

Finally we get to the utility category which will be made up of the next-generation Defender lineup. The next-gen Defender will have design cues from the DC100 concept and come in a five and seven seat versions, along with a pickup.

Land Rover is having great success with the new Range Rover Evoque and is considering whether to do a subcompact SUV.

"Certainly, I think we can go smaller. In a world focusing on sustainability you could argue that smaller and lighter is the way to go," Land Rover's design director Gerry McGovern.

Land Rover isn't the only brand considering this. Audi is reportedly working on a Q1 SUV and Mercedes-Benz is working on one based on the new A-Class.

When Land Rover announced the new Range Rover earlier in the month, they announced one the powertrains would be a diesel-electric model. The diesel-electric powertrain will combine a 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 model that’s mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission with an electric motor. The hybrid can hit 60 MPH in 7 seconds, get 45 MPG (on the European cycle, U.S. number will be less), and can ford water that is three feet deep.

If this is your dream SUV and live in the U.S., I have some bad news. According to Automobile Magazine, Land Rover will not sell the diesel-hybrid Range Rover in the U.S. The reasoning is that the turbo-diesel V6 would need major modifications to meet emissions.

For now, the U.S. will have the choice between a naturally aspirated V8 and supercharged V8. Both engines will come with an eight-speed automatic.

Those who are still dreaming about a diesel-electric hybrid Range Rover can hold out some hope. Within the next year and a half, the European emission standards will closely resemble the U.S. standards.

Mahwah, N.J., August 23, 2012 – Land Rover has given the 2013 LR2 a complete revision, to deliver even higher levels of comfort, convenience and driving enjoyment. New colors, new exterior design features, upgraded interior equipment levels, and a new more powerful and more efficient engine.

NEW POWERTRAIN

A new lightweight turbocharged, direct injected 2-liter four-cylinder engine now powers the 2013 LR2. This engine delivers 240 hp at 5500 rpm and 250 ft-lbs of torque at 3200 rpm, providing a broader power band strong low-speed response. This represents an increase of 10 hp and 16 lb-ft respectively over the outgoing 3.2- liter naturally aspirated inline six.

Not only does this lightweight engine produce more horsepower and torque than the outgoing six cylinder, it is also more economical. The all-aluminum 2.0-liter turbocharged engine is also 88 lbs lighter than the 3.2-liter naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine it replaces.

This new engine first appeared in the 2012 Range Rover Evoque and features advanced technologies such as high pressure direct fuel injection and variable valve timing. A high efficiency turbocharger delivers rapid response, and a fabricated steel exhaust manifold promotes quicker catalytic converter light-off. Piston rings and tappets have been coated to reduce friction and twin balance shafts ensure smooth operation.

All LR2’s are equipped with Land Rover’s Intelligent Power System Management (IPSM) which features Smart Regenerative Charging. This feature ensures that where possible, the alternator only charges the battery when the vehicle is decelerating, recovering kinetic energy from deceleration, rather than consuming energy during engine operation. IPSM is part of Land Rover’s e_TERRAIN TECHNOLOGIES program which aims to continually improve efficiency in every Land Rover.

The engine is paired with an Aisin AWF21 six-speed automatic transmission engineered with advanced neutral logic control to reduce internal drag when the vehicle is stationary. The transmission also features a remote breather, routed above LR2's water wading depth (19.7 inch / 500 mm of water). Revised clutches and low viscosity oil also improve efficiency while adaptive shifting is available in both normal and sport modes. In sport mode, the auto transmission is programmed to hold low gears longer and to shift down more readily, to assist acceleration. CommandShift® allows manual sequential gear shifts. This transmission is coupled to a full-time four-wheel drive system features a Haldex rear axle differential.

UPGRADED INTERIOR AND ELECTRONICS

Interior equipment levels dramatically increase with a host of new features including three new colors. Every trim level of the LR2 comes with grained leather covered electric seats as standard. Standard dual sunroofs increase the bright and airy feel of LR2’s cabin and the front section opens and slides back over the second-row glass roof panel.

The first thing you notice when entering the LR2’s contemporary looking cabin is a brand new center console with a 7-inch color touch-screen. Through this screen you can control an enhanced audio system from Meridian® and the optional satellite navigation system. The original Terrain Response® dial has been replaced by buttons for 2013. A shutter style door reveals additional storage space in the console.

A new instrument cluster with a 5-inch screen displaying primary vehicle-related information, such as temperature and fuel levels, gear positions and Terrain Response® mode, now sits between the dials across the LR2 model range, complemented with steering wheel toggle switches to operate the clearest of drop down menus and vehicle set-up details. The HSE is equipped with a rear view camera with hitch assist.

Cabin space and safety are improved with the introduction of an intelligent electric parking brake which adjusts brake force according to the slope the vehicle is parked on. The system even takes into account whether the brakes are hot or cold. If hot, the system ‘wakes up’ periodically to ensure clamping force is not lost as the brakes cool down. Despite being operated by a single switch, the electric parking brake may still be used as an emergency brake, automatically selecting the most stable braking method by employing skid prevention techniques. An additional safety feature prevents the brake from being released unless the drivers’ seat is occupied.

More convenience comes in the form of Passive Start which replaces the key docking system, meaning that as long as the key is somewhere inside the car, the engine starts at the touch of a button.

Another new feature for LR2 is rear view camera capability. The view from the back of the vehicle is displayed on the Infotainment screen with dynamic lines representing the boundaries of the vehicle and your predicted path as you reverse. The system also incorporates ‘Hitch Assist,’ a graphic superimposed on the camera showing the position of the tow ball.

A new ‘Say What You See’ voice activation system will prompt the driver visually with the commands he or she needs to speak in order to control functions in the audio, optional satellite navigation, and phone systems. The prompts are displayed in an easy-to-follow ‘step by step’ format on the screen.

The navigation system is improved, now a faster hard drive-based system, which comes with such features as ECO Route planning, Dynamic Zoom, Visual Lane guidance, POI (Point of Interest) management and repeat TMC traffic guidance. You can also manage waypoints and store locations as well as POI locations by name.

Two Meridian® audio systems are now available on the LR2. The first Meridian® system is equipped with a new 7-inch color touch-screen, 380 Watts of power delivered via an 11-speaker system that delivers exceptional stereo sound. Alternatively, customers can opt for the 825 Watt surround sound 17-speaker system with Trifield technology which provides a natural, enveloping, concert-like experience for all occupants. Each Meridian® system is equipped with subwoofers for a deep, bass sound and an Audyssey MultEQ audio tuning system. Both audio systems are also equipped with AM/FM and HD and Satellite radio tuners, while music players support CD, DVD, Virtual CD, iPod® and USB. There is also a 3.5mm auxiliary input jack for music players and Bluetooth® audio streaming to any supporting devices including headphones. The virtual CD system is hard drive based and can store the equivalent of up to 10 Audio CDs at full digital quality, and songs are identifiable using Gracenote®. HD Radio and Sirius XM Satellite Radio are also available.

The HSE LUX includes the 825 Watt Meridian® surround sound audio system, Windsor leather seats and premium carpet mats, while the cold climate package includes heated front seats, heated steering wheel and windscreen with heated washer jets for those chilly mornings.

DRIVING DYNAMICS

Land Rover's engineers’ objectives for the driving dynamics of LR2 were to combine on-road behavior that is agile and refined, with legendary Land Rover off-road ability. Their approach started with the design of the suspension system, and was supplemented by leading edge technologies such as an intelligent permanent all-wheel drive system, Land Rover’s patented Terrain Response® system, and sophisticated traction and stability control systems.

A key contributor to achieving excellent on-road performance is a fully independent suspension system with four corner coil-sprung struts. Front and rear anti-roll bars provide high levels of body roll control. The responsive rack-and-pinion steering is direct and fluid, with just 2.6 turns lock-to-lock. Rigidly mounted to the front sub-frame to improve lateral stiffness, the steering column is adjustable for reach and rake. Off-road it is, simply put, a Land Rover. Its capability starts with 8.26 inch (210 mm) minimum of ground clearance that can overcome rocky, sandy, rutted or muddy terrain. This also helps LR2 to wade through water up to 19.7 inch (500 mm) deep. The LR2 is rated to tow a 3500 lb (1585 kg) braked trailer.

An 18-inch alloy wheel and tire combination is fitted and specifically tuned to the LR2. The wheels are low-pressure die-cast aluminum, and are fitted with all-terrain tires.

HALDEX FOUR WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM[iii]

An intelligent full-time all-wheel drive system is fundamental to delivering Land Rover's legendary on and off-road capabilities. The intelligent permanent all-wheel drive system has been developed in conjunction with Haldex, whose acclaimed center-coupling technology continuously alters the front-rear torque split, through a hydraulically operated multi-plate wet clutch. The system can pre-engage at rest to reduce wheel-spin from standing starts, engages quickly when traction loss is detected and disengaged quickly to optimize the response of the stability control systems.

Its front-rear torque split adapts continuously to suit ever changing conditions. Only a small amount of torque is fed to the rear wheels under normal conditions, such as on a straight paved road, but in low traction or off-road situations, almost all the engine torque can instantaneously be delivered to the rear wheels, if required. This is an ideal arrangement that offers maximum grip in difficult conditions, yet minimizes rear drive – and therefore rotational losses, thus maintaining maximum fuel economy – when not required. The LR2’s Haldex unit is designed to allow up to 1106 lb.-ft. of torque transmission. Full torque transmission can be achieved in just 150 milliseconds. In effect, the new Haldex coupling gives the proactive engagement benefits of all-wheel drive and the efficiency and fuel economy of an on-demand system.

The resultant system proactively engages all-wheel drive rapidly. A high-pressure pre-charge pump pressurizes the hydraulics in the center coupling as soon as the engine is started, allowing for all-wheel drive from rest. It also reduces the time taken to achieve full torque once wheel-slip has been detected – engaging within 15 degrees of wheel-slip rotation.

TERRAIN RESPONSE® and OFF-ROAD DRIVING SYSTEMS

The Terrain Response® system is one of the core Land Rover technologies that gives the LR2 its outstanding range of capabilities. It adapts the responses of the vehicle's engine, gearbox, center coupling and chassis systems to match the demands of the terrain. It optimizes drivability and comfort, as well as maximizing traction.

Terrain Reponses® is a fully integrated system which manages:

Engine Management

Transmission Control

Electronic Traction Control and Anti-lock Brakes: these slip and braking control systems are all adjusted and tuned by Terrain Response to offer optimum grip, braking power and safety on the chosen terrain

Dynamic Stability Control (DSC): is designed to stop torque to a wheel after loss of traction, but in some off-road situations torque feed is still desirable, even when traction is being lost. Terrain Response® automatically adjusts the DSC so that appropriate torque is maintained

Center Coupling

Terrain Response® works continuously, however special programs can be selected by the driver for challenging terrain conditions such as grass, gravel, snow, mud, ruts, and sand. On the LR2, there are four Terrain Response® settings which the driver can choose via a rotary control:

General Driving: provides a broad span of ability suitable for most on-road driving and easier off-road conditions

Grass/Gravel/Snow: for slippery conditions, on-road or off-road

Mud and Ruts

Sand

The Terrain Response® also changes the setting of the electronic center coupling, to optimize all-wheel drive in tough conditions. When Terrain Response® special programs are engaged, different transmission shift mappings are applicable, depending on the mode chosen. The Transmission Control Module also manages torque converter lock-up, which has different requirements depending on the selected Terrain Response® mode.

Hill Descent Control (HDC): This system automatically restricts speed downhill, using the anti-lock brake system, and improves driver control on slippery descents. HDC is automatically engaged on appropriate Terrain Response® programs. Downhill speed rates vary according to which surface is selected.

The LR2 has large vented disc brakes, front and rear, providing substantial stopping power. The large

12.5 in. (316 mm) front discs are ‘reverse vented,’ so they draw cool air into the disc over the central bell, which is then vented out from the rim of the disc. This approach improves thermal stability under severe braking. Rear brake discs are also substantial – 12-inch (302 mm) in diameter, and include a new Electric Parking Brake. In addition to the latest-generation four-channel anti-lock brakes, the modulator also controls Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), which balances the distribution of braking force between front and rear, Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), which boosts pedal pressure when full braking is required, and Corner Brake Control (CBC), which enhances rear-end stability when braking in corners. It also helps to control the Hill Descent Control, Electronic Traction Control and Dynamic Stability Control systems.

The electronic modulator at the heart of the stability control systems on LR2 constantly monitors and, if necessary, adjusts both braking and engine traction to assist in maintaining control of each wheel. As well as reducing brake pressure, as in a conventional anti-lock (ABS) braking system, the modulator is designed to help generate positive hydraulic pressure to increase braking force in an emergency.

Roll Stability Control is a sophisticated roll-over prevention technology from Land Rover. Gyroscopic sensing allows this system – linked to the electronic modulator – to compare the rate of change of body roll angle with the steered course. If necessary, incremental brake force is applied to specific wheels to reduce the chances ofa roll.

Another innovation on LR2 is Land Rover’s patented Gradient Release Control system. Linked to the Hill Descent Control, it ensures that when releasing the brakes on extremely steep hills, brake-line pressure is released progressively when the driver’s foot is removed from the pedal, helping the driver maintain control.

DESIGN

As always with a Land Rover, functionality is a fundamental driver of design. The narrow front A-posts help achieve excellent all-round visibility. The hood castellations help the driver place the vehicle more accurately on the road or off the beaten track. The wheel stance and wide track help deliver agile handling and sure footed grip. The short front and rear overhangs and high underbody are essential for its’ off-road performance by maximizing approach and departure angles. The body-side protection guards against stone chips and helps keep the sills clean.

Exteriors are offered with a selection of new body colors, as well as more new lighting, both front and rear, utilizing the latest in LED technology and sporting more contemporary design details for an integrated appearance.

The three new colors that have been added to the LR2 range for 2013 are Aintree Green, Havana and Mauritius Blue. Exteriors gain a number of new integrated design features resulting in a coordinated and premium appearance. With the latest in Xenon and LED technology, the front and rear lamps have been revamped giving the LR2 a new look, set off with a new signature design graphic in the front running lights.

The grille and fog lamp bezels now sport a bright finish and there are paint detailing changes to the front grille surround, insert bars and fender vent to harmonize the different elements. Externally, the LR2 HSE grill insert bars, fender vent and rear finisher strip have a light gloss silver finish whilst the grille surround is finished in gloss black. There are 18-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels as standard and two 19-inch wheel options.

BODY STRUCTURE

The LR2 uses unibody construction. Ultra-high-strength steel is used extensively in the LR2’s door beams and for various strengthening reinforcements. DP600 dual-phase steel – which requires special pressing because of its strength – is used for the A-posts, lower sills, cantrails, front side members and dash to help provide a weight-efficient passenger cell.

Many of the bolt-on components fitted during final assembly also help improve structural integrity. A fully integrated front-end structure not only carries the cooling pack and front bumpers, but also substantially boosts the overall body stiffness. Even the hood-locking platform has been designed to help boost structural integrity, ensuring good load transfer from one front crash rail to the other.

LR2 uses 100 percent double-sided zinc-coated steel panels as part of the sophisticated anti-corrosion and paint treatment. Vulnerable areas of the car, including the sills and lower doors, are coated in a tough thermoplastic cladding. A double bulkhead in the engine bay improves powertrain isolation and provides a clean area for components such as the ABS modulator, brake servo and wiper system. The cooling pack is protected by a strong thermoplastic undertray, while a structural steel undertray protects the engine. Bumpers are made from high-pressure injection-molded reinforced polypropylene.

SAFETY

The LR2’s long list of primary safety features – including its responsive handling, large four-wheel disc brakes and permanent all-wheel drive system – helps the driver avoid hazards. Another key to safety is maintaining excellent visibility under all conditions. The high ‘command view’ seating position provides visibility over traffic and a clear view of the road. The generous areas of glass on LR2 offer excellent

all-around views. Large door mirrors offer a wide field of view. An electrically heated front windshield and heated washer jets are available to maintain visibility in low temperature conditions. Rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights, both of which work via infra-red sensor technology, are standard on all models.

Secondary safety starts with the strong unibody and its passenger cell. Front and rear crumple zones are designed to help absorb as much energy as possible during an impact. Side-impact protection is further assisted by the ultra-high-strength steel door beams, the strong and deep door sills and the raised seat position. All LR2 models feature seven airbags as standard equipment. The driver and passenger front airbags are designed to help provide head and chest protection and the front seat side airbags protect against side impacts. Full-length curtain airbags in the roof side structure are designed to help reduce the potential of head injury and roll-over ejection for front and rear occupants. An inflatable knee bolster helps protect the driver against leg injury from the steering column. The front safety belts feature pre-tensioners. Pedestrian safety is also a high priority, with 2.76-3.54 inch (70mm-90mm) of clearance between the upper hood and under-hood mechanicals in the critical zones. The excellent energy absorbing qualities of the hood further assist pedestrian protection.

August 14, 2012

Earlier this morning, two pictures of what was allegedly the new 2013 Range Rover leaked on the web. Well, those two pictures were the real deal as Land Rover has released the details of the next Range Rover.

The forth-generation Range Rover looks a lot like the outgoing model, especially in profile. There is also a lot of design influence from the Evoque in the new Range Rover; the sloped front end and roofline, and streamlined door handles.

Inside, the Range Rover is a study on the art of minimalism. A few physical knobs, many controls as possible recessed into the surface, and a large screen make up much the front. Range Rover has also increased rear legroom by 4.7 inches.

The big news of course is what the new Range Rover rides on. Underneath the body is an all-aluminum unibody structure with aluminum chassis structures. The move to aluminum helps drop almost 700 lbs of the new Range Rover.

Land Rover has also fitted a a re-engineered adaptive air suspension, which is claimed to inspire more driver confidence.

For the time being, Land Rover is being quiet on powertrains for the Range Rover. Its expected the natural-aspirated and supercharged V8s will carryover, and a supercharged V6 and diesel are under consideration.

The new Range Rover arrives at your local Land Rover Dealer in December.

Mahwah, New Jersey, USA, August 15, 2012 – The new 2013 Land Rover Range Rover has been engineered from the ground up to be the most capable, most refined Range Rover ever. Lighter, stronger, and with new levels of refinement, the next Range Rover reinforces its position among the finest luxury vehicles.

As the fourth generation of the Range Rover line, this all-new model was developed from the ground up, capturing the innovative spirit and iconic design of the original model which changed the world of motoring when it was launched over 40 years ago.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s development centers in the United Kingdom, the next Range Rover will be produced at a new manufacturing facility at Solihull, United Kingdom which employs the latest low-energy aluminum body construction technologies.

The all-aluminum unibody structure is 39 percent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model. This enables a total vehicle weight savings of up to 926lbs, depending on market and specifications. The US specification vehicle with the naturally-aspirated 5-liter V8 will be approximately 700lbs lighter than the outgoing equivalent. This new aluminum platform delivers significant enhancements in performance and agility, along with an improvement in fuel economy and reduction in CO2 emissions.

In addition to the strong and rigid aluminum body, an all-new aluminum front and rear chassis architecture has been developed and paired with a with completely re-engineered four-corner air suspension. The luxurious ride has been retained, while the vehicle’s handling and agility have been sharpened. The new suspension architecture delivers flatter, more confident cornering abilities, with a natural and intuitive steering feel.

John Edwards, Land Rover Global Brand Director, said: “The new Range Rover preserves the essential, unique character of the vehicle – that special blend of luxury, performance and unmatched all-terrain capability. However, its clean sheet design and revolutionary lightweight construction have enabled us to transform the experience for luxury vehicle customers, with a step change in comfort, refinement and handling.”

Within the cabin, the all-new Range Rover provides occupants with a sensation of serene isolation, meeting the highest standards for Range Rover refinement. Measures like the rigorously optimized body structure and acoustic lamination of the windshield and side door glass have significantly reduced noise levels, while the new suspension architecture has enabled engineers to achieve heightened levels of ride comfort, refinement, and control.

With over 4.7 inches more legroom than the outgoing model, the rear occupants benefit from vastly increased space and comfort. The option of a two place rear seating package provides for the ultimate in personalized rear-seat luxury.

To deliver the characteristic effortless performance expected by customers, the Range Rover will continue to offer a choice of V8 engines in the North American market, enhanced by new eight-speed ZF automatic transmissions.

Each new Land Rover model is extensively tested for durability and reliability. The new Range Rover has been subjected to Land Rover’s punishing on-and off-road test and development regime. A fleet of development vehicles covered millions of miles over 18 months, with arduous tests in more than 20 countries through extremes of climate and road surfaces.

The all-new Land Rover Range Rover has a clean and elegant shape which is inspired by a fresh new interpretation of classic Range Rover design cues. While instantly recognizable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a step forward with a bold evolution of the model’s iconic design language.

The sumptuous interior incorporates distinctive Range Rover design cues, but executed with a very contemporary treatment. Clean, elegant surfaces are flawlessly presented using the finest leathers and veneers.

“Designing the next generation Range Rover, following over forty years of success, came with a huge responsibility to protect the DNA of such an icon,” said Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer. “Our design team worked incredibly hard to capture the elegant proportions and pure surfaces which have been a feature of the best Range Rover designs.”

The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies. Exclusive sound systems by renowned British audio specialists Meridian™ are standard. A thoughtfully designed split power folding upper and lower tailgate setup offers ease of access and versatility. Advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies are abundant. Amongst the innovations featured in the new Range Rover is the next-generation of Land Rover’s Terrain Response® system, which analyses the current driving conditions and road surfaces through on-board sensors, and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle settings program for the terrain.

The all-new Range Rover will be available in over 160 markets worldwide, with North American customer deliveries scheduled to start in December 2012.

These driver assistance features supplement safe driving habits. The performance of described vehicle technologies are influenced by a multitude of intervening factors and driving conditions and cannot defy the laws of physics. These features are not a substitute for the exercise of due care and sound judgment. Please consult your owner’s manual or your local authorized retailer for more details.
Land Rover hasn't exactly managed to keep its new Range

Rover under wraps; spy shots with the new car wearing light camo or being caught in the factory.

Now, two images that are allegedly official photos of the new Range Rover have leaked on to the web. The two pictures match up with spy shots of the Range Rover that have been caught over the past few months.

As we been reporting for the past few months, expect the next Range Rover to drop a lot of weight from the current model thanks to a new aluminum frame and lightweight components used throughout the body. Expect a range of V8s and a hybrid model. Also, there is talk of a 3.0L Supercharged Six making its way.

Automobile Magazine has gotten their hands on some information on what Land Rover could be planning for the Range Rover Lineup.

Starting with the Range Rover itself, we know that Land Rover will be showing the next generation model sometime this year, most likely at the Paris Motor Show. But the report says that Land Rover is working a long-wheelbase version of the new Range Rover to appear a year after.

The new long-wheelbase Range Rover will be six inches longer than a standard Range Rover and come with more luxuries. The long-wheelbase model will also come with four seats, instead of five.

The next vehicle in the Range Rover family is the Range Rover Sport. Expected to come out in late 2013, the new Sport will be wider, lower, more aerodynamic, and aggressive than current model. The new Sport will also gain a third-row seat.

Finally, there is the Evoque. Automobile Magazine says Land Rover is deciding whether to do a long-wheelbase, seven seat Evoque. The hold-up lies with the next-generation Freelander (a.k.a. Land Rover LR2 in the U.S.), as it will have a seven-seat model as well. Land Rover sees the two models overlapping, despite the two having different agendas and price points.

Land Rover is coming close to finishing up the next generation Range Rover as these new spy shots show.

The big surprise, besides the modern art camouflage, is how much camo there is on this particular mule, giving us a clear look of what changes have been done. The overall boxy shape of the current model is still present. The difference will be in the details, with changes like a slightly more upswept beltline, an angled front end, and a sharply raked front and rear window.

The big news for the next generation Range Rover will be in the weight. Land Rover has shed somewhere between 800 to 1,000 lbs thanks to a new aluminum chassis and extensive use of lightweight materials.

Engines are likely to include the naturally-aspirated and supercharged variants of the 5.0L V8 and possibly a hybrid.

The next-generation Land Rover Defender has some pretty big shoes to fill, according to Autocar. Besides the fact it has to meet or exceed the renowned off-road capabilities of the current model, Land Rover is targeting the sales figures of the insuperable Toyota Hilux pickup which moved 549,000 units globally last year. According to Land Rover’s global brand director John Edwards who spoke to Autocar recently, when the new Defender arrives in 2015, it could very be the brand’s best selling model.

In comparison, the current Defender only managed to move 20,000 units and that pales in comparison to the Hilux’s 500,000-plus figures. Land Rover isn’t expecting to see those sales numbers over night, though, and Edwards says the company is instead looking at the new model as a “20-year plan with global potential.” Edwards also adds that he would like to see Land Rover become “a global maker, not a UK maker selling globally” which probably signals that the Defender would be built in locations outside of England to achieve those targeted numbers.

Besides taking aim at the Hilux’s sales numbers, Land Rover is also taking steps to ensure the new Defender will be affordable to buy, cheap to maintain, and durable just like the old one. “We’re talking to sub-Saharan African buyers about cost of ownership and ease of maintenance,” Edwards said. “That it’s functional, durable and affordable are central to our thoughts. The engineers and designers are really getting engaged.”

Although Land Rover hasn’t confirmed anything, some claim the Defender will be returning to the United States after a 15 year absence when the model was discontinued in 1997 because it didn’t meet federal safety requirements. After all, Land Rover did roll out the DC100 concept said to preview the new Defender at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show and, when it did, John Edwards kept talking about the new model having to appeal to everyone, including Californian surfer dudes. If Land Rover is serious about bringing a low-cost, no-frills, tough off-roader here, I say bring it on.

It’s hard to believe the current Range Rover has been on sale since 2003. The car has been getting minor changes during its almost ten year life. However, Land Rover is busy prepping the next generation Range Rover and new spy shots show how much work is going into it.

The next Range Rover looks to keep the shape of the current one, albeit a bit longer and a lower roofline.

The big news for the next Range Rover lies in its platform. The new Range will ride on a all-new aluminium monocoque platform, first seen on the Jaguar XJ. The move will help drop the weight of the new Range Rover by about 881 lbs.

Powertrains are unknown at the moment, but expect the naturally-aspirated and supercharged V8s in the current model to carry over and hybrid option to follow.

Land Rover is looking at expanding the Evoque lineup with a longer Evoque. The model will sit between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

The vehicle will be based on a stretched version of Land Rover’s LR-MS architecture that underpins the current Evoque, with six inches being added between the axles and the rest going to the rear end. The vehicle will also use lightweight materials to meet stricter requirements for fuel economy.

Design will be a copy of the Evoque with minor changes to give it a visual and functional character of its own.

Power will come from a new range of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel powertrains JLR is developing. A hybrid will also be available.
