  1. Two of our neighbors have bought Avalon Tourings, and if I wanted a big family sedan, that's the one I'd get. A quick check of the Toyota site shows that the Touring model is $29,025 with standard Xenons, fogs, power front seats, leather, side curtain airbags, and reclining rear seats.

Yup, been a GM man all my life. I currently own (3) GM products. Even worked as a mechanic for (2) different GM dealers in the 80's.

My next new car will be a 2007 Toyota Avalon Touring.........

To answer the initial question on this thread, I'm told the new 6 speed trans. is a "definite" for 2007 and possibly an 18 inch wheel.

  2. WOW   .....I was just doing a little poking around that Lexus forum that had the pictures......check out this poll for owners problems with their current ES.  Don't forget to look at the # of voters = 227.  There are 565 problems just from those 227 voters on just the problems listed.....I wonder how many problems would have been listed if there was an "other" catagory??   :

There were minor problems listed on the Monte Carlo forum I used to belong to, and on the current Chrysler LX (300/Magnum/Charger) forum.....but nothing to the extent of the problems listed on that Lexus ES thread.  What pieces of junk.  How can those people on there rag on American car quality, and then completely overlook the pieces of crap that they are driving??

I think you need to consider the perspective there. Those responses are from Lexus owners across all production years, meaning there may be some really old cars lumped into that informal survey. I guess if someone asked me to list all the problems I've had over the last 10 years and 230,300 miles on my 96' Chevy Lumina, then I'd have a long list of problems as well.....

    Light bulbs

    Brakes

    Ball joints

    Tie rod ends

    Water pump

    Alternator

    belt tensioner & pulley

    Intake gasket

    Rear exhaust manifold

    Turn signal switch

    Cruise control servo

    IAC valve

    Throttle position sensor

    Both cup holders

    Fuel pump

    Plus regular maintenance items....

I think it's safe to assume that most of the posters in that forum are younger people with older Leuxs cars, i.e. they'll have more problems to report as the vehicles age.

There are whole forums dedicated to the dreaded Lexus 5 speed transmission problem.... Check out the Edmunds forums for Lexus. It's not the just the ES, the used the same tranny in the Camry and I think the Sienna. That's why all the Lexus enthusiasts are so damned happy to see that new 6 speed show up!

  4. FOG, it seems you had a little too much Kool-Aid.

I wonder, you harass the ES for being a Camry just for sharing a platform, so what do you think about the DTS/Lucerene and the LaCrosse/Impala?

Yes, that's what I'm talking about. There seems to be this double standard that only applies to foreign brands who are experiencing well deserved growth. Where do you think Toyota learned this platform sharing technique!?

So if we can all agree that the luxury makes all have similar characteristics between models, and they're all executing the same strategy, then this really becomes a non-argument...... Doesn't it?

  5. Bluesman.. Don't waste your time.. You're exactly right. The styling theme is excellent and doing Lexus very well.. When people say things like "Cadillac is getting it right" in regards to how their designs are not too close - and then mention the current CTS and STS in the next sentence, you know something's wrong.. Even I have trouble distinguishing the two and I'm the biggest Caddy fan here...

Don't waste your breath - or your energy...

I appreciate that Sal and thanks for backing me up. I rather enjoy making what I believe to be a sensible counter point here. I'm a deeply rooted GM fan but I can't stand by and idly watch the pot call the kettle black..... I don't know how anyone can honestly look at the (4) Lexus sedans and say they all look the same, and then not give equal scrutiny to Cadillac, BMW or Benz models.

I think Cadillac is getting it right but yes, the CTS and STS look very similar to me.

  6. There's a difference between following family themes and making every car look exactly like. Buicks, Mercuries, Cadillacs, and Hondas are examples of manufacturers who get it right. You know the car is a _____, but its not forced down your throat. Mercedes has become McBenz with its lookalike-except-for-size cars. Lexus used to have a decent theme without looking too contrived.

Yea, but even Chevy is starting to do it!! I can't tell a Malibu from a new Impala coming at me from down the road!! They both look alike till you get close enough and can judge size and markings...

I can tell the difference between an IS, GS, LS and ES pretty easily.

  7. This L-finesse theme is starting to become very yawn-inducing.  I mean why the hell is Lexus making it's vehicles look too much a like.  There is a difference between common brand identity and brand repetitiveness.  To make matters worse, Toyotas are now starting to share a lot of similar design elements with the new Lexus vehicles.. Which is the last thing Toyota should be doing right now.

Lexus designers are clearly missing the point.

Just to play devil's advocate....Isn't Cadillac, BMW and Mercedes doing the same? I mean those makes all share a common look and theme, why does Lexus get hammered for it and those brands don't?

If they can capture a look, make it their own and expand upon it, isn't that brand building like we all talk about?? I think they're hitting the nail on the head....

  8. Lexus has the gold standard now in a cushy FWD near-lux vehicle, and this car is going to move the bar up a couple of notches.  The last ES had two problems: bizarre styling (eyelids over the forehead look) and an overly floaty ride, but not terribly different from a DTS.  From the small pics, the car appears attractive, but the same was initially said for the new Camry.

Make that (3) problems - They had a rash of complaints and problems with the 5 speed transmission...

  9. I just don't get it.  Why are they making the new Toyota cars look like new Lexus cars?  Don't they want the brands to look different from eachother?

    [post="43023"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]

Why does GM need (4) mini vans that all look alike!?!? Beats the S*** out of me.....
  10. Hard to admit but the ES interior is top notch for the money... The exterior on the next gen. should be more pleasing to the eye. The ES wins economically compared to the Lacrosse in the arena of price & mpg. Watch out for more H.P. and dispacement for 2007. It'll be tough to ignore this "entry level luxury" offering and it's already well sold in the Lexus line up with the old styling.
  11. Edit:  the picture in the first post is the next-gen ES (as already posted in the "2007 Lexus ES" thread), not the LS.

Actually no, the above shot IS the LS, the ES shot is in it's own thread.

Same angle, different cars, similar looking cardboard.
